La Llorona is from Mexican folklore, it translates to, the weeping woman.
La llorona is a vengeful spirit who cries as she looks for her children whom she killed.
Her cries, if you hear them, are said to bring misfortune and death.
There have been several sightings over the years, but no source for the story has ever
been found.
But what if La llorona wasn't just a story, what if there really was a spirit stalking
riverbanks, looking for children.
What if the curse of la llorona was real.

The story goes like this.
A woman named maria was known around her small village for her beauty, even though she came
from a poor family.
One day, a wealthy man travelled through Maria's village.
He saw maria and immediately stopped in his tracks.
He was so taken aback by her beauty, he asked her to marry him, and she agreed.
Marias family was so happy that she had found a wealthy man, but the noblemans father was
not so thrilled that he had chosen a woman who came from such a poor background.
But the wealthy nobleman didn't listen, he married maria and moved into a new house
in the village that he built.
Soon enough, maria was pregnant, and she gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl.
But she didn't want to baptise her children, and that ended up hurting her later.
The wealthy nobleman was always travelling for work and he had stopped spending time
with his family.
When he was at home, he would only pay attention to his children, and not to his wife maria.
And then one day, he left, and never returned home.
Years went by, until one day when maria was walking by the river with her children.
She saw her husbands carriage, but inside it was a young beautiful woman next to her
husband.
In a fit of anger, maria picked up her children, threw them in the river and drowned them.
As she saw their bodies floating in the river, she realized what she had done.
She jumped in the river with her children and drowned so she could die with them.
When Maria reached the gates of heaven, she was told that she could not enter the afterlife
until she found her children.
As I stated before, her children were not baptised, therefore they can't enter heaven.
Now her spirit is caught between heaven and hell.
She lurks around the river, crying and looking for children to replace her own.
If you hear her crying, you must run in the opposite direction.
If you don't, her cries bring misfortune, or even death.
She has been known to kidnap children who resemble her own.
The curse of la llorona is told to children by their parents in Mexico and Guatemala to
prevent them from staying out too late.
The legend is especially told in regions of Latin America where mountain lions are active.
It is said that the mountain lions mating call sounds very similar to a woman's scream.
The story also told to children who misbehave to deter them from acting poorly.
"if you're bad, lla lorona will get you'.
But even though the legend is intended to keep children safe, that hasn't stopped
people from seeing la llorona over the years.
People who claim to have seen her say that she appears in the evening or at night by
rivers or lakes.
She has long hair as dark as night, she wears a white dress, and she crouches next to creeks
as she sinks her hands into the water.
Her face is said to either have no features, or her features are elongated and look as
if they are melting off her face.
The story was even made into a film, and the cast and crew say that the spirit visited
the set during the filming.
They reported seeing strange supernatural occurrences.
So, if the curse of la llorona was real, you can bet that there would be strict nightly
curfews in place for any town or city that happened to be close to a body of water.
This might have a negative effect on local fisherman who rely on bodies of water for
their businesses.
Towns and cities would have alarm systems in place that would be set off whenever there
were la llorona sightings, or whenever her cries are heard.
Children especially would be at risk, most specificially children who resembled lla loronas.
Its likely that families with young children would stay away from rural areas altogether.
The families that decided to stay, would be shunned by society.
We know that the spirit loves children, and purposefully seeks them out.
This makes life for other townspeople that much more dangerous.
If la llorona was real, there would be an influx in documentary filmmakers and paranormal
investigators flocking to areas where there were sightings.
Seeing as how hearing her cries bring misfortune or even death, this would be extremely dangerous.
Anyone who happened to get the apparition on camera, or even her cries, are at a serious
risk.
And maybe getting lla lorona's cries on camera wouldn't be such a good idea anyway.
Hearing her cries can be deadly, but if they were caught on camera, that could result in
a ring sort of scenario where people who watched documentaries on her would be put at risk
as well.
If lla lorona was real, it would mean that spirits are real, and that would completely
change the world's outlook toward the supernatural.
Its likely we would see a shift where many would flock to religion, and would try to
use prayer as protection.
All children would become baptised, so that they could ascend to heaven.
The media would always have some sort of lla lorona story to cover.
Journalists would also put themselves at risk by visiting areas where she had been seen.
This could result in many deaths among the media community.
After all the deaths and media frenzy, something would have to be done.
But how do you destroy a spirit, or perhaps even put her at rest?
First mediums would be sent to try to determine what lla lorona wanted.
Then priests would be sent to cleanse the affected areas.
But all of these attempts wouldn't work.
La llorona's spirit will never be at rest until she finds her children and brings them
to heaven with her, but she can't because they are not baptised.
The reason why she's caught between heaven and hell is because she's searching for
them.
So the way to finally put her at rest, would be to find the remains of her children, and
baptise them.
Seeing as la llorona drowned them in a river, this would not be easy, but eventually, if
la llorona was real, then her children were real, so there would be remains to find.
Once that happened, a baptism ceremony would be performed, and their spirits would finally
be permitted to get past the gates of heaven.
And then, lla lorona would finally be at peace.
