Thanks To Trump, Number Of People Fleeing The US For Canada Has Skyrocketed - Duration: 3:34.

And we've all heard the trope that if the opposition party wins the presidential election,

I'm moving to Canada.

You know, Democrats set it in the 2004 election with George W. Bush, Republican Senate with

Obama in '08 Democrats said it again with 2016 with Trump.

Everybody wants to move to Canada.

Well, none of that really ever materializes.

Nobody.

I mean there's probably a few people, but even these hardcore party loyalists so mad,

the other side, one, they don't actually end up moving to Canada.

Nonetheless, Canada has seen a massive spike.

It's actually hit historic highs in the number of people leaving the United States to seek

asylum in Canada.

But these aren't disaffected party loyalists.

They're immigrants, naturalized citizens here in the United States.

Some of them even born here, but there are so terrified of the Trump administration and

their anti-immigrant policies and rhetoric that they are trying to seek asylum in Canada.

Last year, the number hit 2,550 US citizens trying to flee our country to seek asylum

in Canada.

And again, these are immigrants.

These are people who are afraid that Donald Trump is going to deport them, even though

they're actually citizens here in the United States.

Many of them born here, but some of them brought their non-citizen parents over so they're

terrified for their family.

So this isn't just about partisan, like I'm pissed you one.

I'm leaving the country.

These are people who have legitimate fears about their own future, about their lives,

about their families having to leave our country because of who the president is and the things

he has said he wants to do.

This has hit a disgusting level here in the United States.

Again, in my lifetime, I have not seen the level of vitriol coming out of the office,

of the presidency towards immigrants ever, ever.

I know it's been worse in the past.

We have done horrible things to US citizens to immigrants, to people of color, the people

of different religions, but in my lifetime I've never seen it like this.

I wasn't alive for some of the worst stuff, but this is bad.

The fact that we have people who fear for their lives in the United States just because

of the color of their skin or their last name or their culture that they brought over, they

fear for their lives so badly that they have to leave this country because of the president

of the United States that tells us we're on the wrong path.

We're on the wrong path.

As a country.

The Republican Party is on the wrong path as a party, but they show no signs of wanting

to correct it.

If anything, they want to double down.

Donald Trump wants that border wall.

He wants more people locked in these detention facilities and that's why they're building

new ones, bigger ones, better ones, more tense, more cages, more people locked up, and that's

why people who wants thought the United States was this beacon of hope, this great country,

this shining city upon a hill.

They're leaving it because now they're seeing it for what it really is a white nationalistic

country that has complete disdain for immigrants.

It shouldn't be this way.

It wouldn't be this way if Donald Trump was not an office, but he is, and so this is the

new reality in which we have to live until we can finally get this disgusting human being

out of the White House.

The U.S. Is Tear Gassing Toddlers At The Border - Duration: 4:49.

Over the weekend, agents for the US Customs and border patrol began shooting canisters

of tear gas from the United States border into Mexico, targeting women, children, toddlers,

infants, and everyone else in those areas.

A lot of the right wing responses that we have seen from this is that it's not the women

and children.

Those are very few in that massive crowd.

Most of this is angry men coming to the United States because they hate President Trump and

they hate the United States.

So they're coming here according to right wingers on, uh, social media.

Um, first of all, no truth to that whatsoever.

You can see the pictures for yourself.

We've all seen them.

They've been going around social media.

They've been shown on the corporate media.

We see children screaming

after getting tear gassed by US Customs and border patrol agents.

There's no denying what's happening.

The evidence is there.

The pictures are there.

We know what the United States is doing and it's borderline a war crime to be using these

chemical agents against a civilian population.

I mean hell, even if we were at war, it would be illegal to use these under the Geneva protocols,

but that hasn't stopped our border agents from shooting these things at women and children.

I mean, you know, you think of the picture, the little girl, they're screaming, she doesn't

even have shoes on.

She doesn't even have pants on.

The mom is wearing what is obviously one of the child's shirts because they don't even

have enough clothing and we're tear gassing them.

In my lifetime, 35 years, I've never seen anything like this from the United States

on our own soil.

I know we've committed some horrible atrocities overseas.

I've seen the photographs from Abu Ghraib and all the torture that went on there, but

I never thought I'd be in a situation where I would see it come home, but it has.

We have in my lifetime, and I know things have been worse in this country, but we've

hit a rock bottom.

We have not been this low as a country since I was born.

We haven't been this low as a country since segregation or slavery, but that's where we're

at right now.

We are gassing children.

Trump has closed the border illegally.

By the way.

He does not have the authority to do that and we're committing war crimes were committing

crimes against humanity.

These are the kinds of things that if somebody else was doing this in another country, we

wouldn't hesitate to go invade them.

I mean, it wasn't.

One of the big things with Saddam Hussein was that he was using chemical weapons against

his own people and here we are using chemical weapons because that is what tear gas is classified

as.

We're using chemical weapons against children who are legally seeking asylum.

They have not done anything illegal.

Now, according to some of the border patrol agents, they were throwing a quote project

tiles.

So you think that a, a child, you know, even a teenager thrown a couple rocks are a few

sticks.

I mean, that's a reason to gas them and burned their lungs and burn their eyes and mouths

and noses and everything else because you got hit when you're in full riot gear with

a small rock.

This is insanity.

This is a police state and this is the lowest that I've ever seen this country hit in my

lifetime and honest to God.

I don't know if there's any coming back from this, the way the right wingers are defending.

This tells me that this is not going to stop.

Somebody needs to be held accountable for this and not the just the people on the ground

shooting these canisters.

Yes, they should be tried for war crimes and they absolutely could be under the Geneva

protocols.

Again, we signed into that and they're still doing it.

Any soldier that participates in that, even if they're just following orders, is guilty,

but so are all of the ones at the top who made the decisions.

There needs to be investigations, there needs to be prison sentences, and we need to show

the rest of the world that we're not as gross and dirty and deplorable as we're coming across

in these recent media reports.

Fr. James Martin: Why is the U.S. tear-gassing migrants? - Duration: 3:11.

- Yesterday the US Customs and Border Protection Agency

fired tear gas at migrants trying to seek asylum

in the United States at the border crossing at Tijuana.

How did our country reach the point

where we are tear gassing mothers and children?

One reason is because of the widespread myths

about these brothers and sisters of ours.

Myth one, they are illegals.

First of all, no one is an illegal person

and seeking asylum is recognized as a universal human right.

Current international agreements about asylum

stem from a desire not to repeat the fate of Jews

during the Second World War

who were denied entrance to many countries.

And one requirement for asylum

is to be physically present in the United States

which is exactly what these people

from Central America are trying to do.

In fact, it's illegal to dismiss asylum seekers

without hearing their cases.

In other words, they are trying to follow

both international and US law.

Myth two, we can't afford them.

Many people believe that the US and many European countries

shelter a huge amount of refugees.

That is false.

The majority of the world's refugees

live in poor or middle-income nations.

Eight out of 10 of the world's refugees

are sheltered by developing countries.

In 2016 for example,

Turkey, Pakistan, and Lebanon

hosted the highest number of refugees,

a combined total of 5.4 million refugees.

Of the 15 million refugees worldwide,

86% reside in developing countries.

By contrast, the United States,

one of the wealthiest countries in the world,

is allowing in only 30,000 next year.

We can afford to welcome these refugees.

Myth three, they are mainly criminals.

Claims that these migrants are criminals,

that this exodus harbors terrorists

from the Middle East are unfounded.

Are there a few criminals somehow mixed in?

No more than with any other group in the past

and that would include the immigrants

that came to this country in the last 200 years.

Italians, Irish, Germans, and on and on.

People fleeing Honduras for example

who are mainly women and children

face some of the worse violence, inequality,

and corruption in the world.

Criminal gangs, rape, and persecution all on top of poverty.

There's a reason that they're risking everything

to come here.

They are fleeing crime, not bringing it.

So before you dismiss these people as illegals,

as too expensive or as criminals,

please know the facts.

And even if you want to dismiss these facts,

remember what Jesus said about welcoming the stranger.

He didn't say welcome them when they had the right papers.

He didn't say welcome them when you could afford it.

He didn't say welcome them when there is zero risk to you.

Jesus said welcome them.

Hundreds of Migrants Rush U.S. Border in Tijuana - Duration: 1:57.

Hundreds of Migrants Rush U.S. Border in Tijuana

MEXICO CITY — A peaceful march by Central American migrants waiting at the southwestern United States border veered out of control on Sunday afternoon, as hundreds of people tried to evade a Mexican police blockade and run toward a giant border crossing into California.

In response, the United States Customs and Border Protection agency shut down the border crossing in both directions.

The march in Tijuana, Mexico, was met by Mexican federal police officers at a bridge that leads to the San Ysidro border crossing, through which millions of people and vehicles pass each year. At that point, some of the migrants tried to go around the police by running across a dry riverbed.

The police, carrying anti-riot shields, then formed a new line and appeared to contain the rush of migrants 100 yards or more from the crossing. They erected metal barriers on the roads and sidewalks leading to the crossing.

A group of migrants then tried to make their way to the train crossing, where they were met by police officers who released tear gas to stop them.

The unrest came as Mexico is trying to deal with thousands of Central American migrants who have arrived in Tijuana in an attempt to either seek asylum or, in some cases, cross the United States border illegally.

The migrants have spent the past 10 days in squalid conditions in a community sports center that has been converted into a makeshift shelter. Many have become increasingly desperate with the realization of the obstacles still before them in reaching the United States.

Tijuana city officials say they have no money to improve conditions at the sports center, where an estimated 5,000 migrants are sheltering.

All border traffic was halted on Sunday at the busy crossing between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency said, as hundreds of Central American migrants massed at the border intending to apply for asylum in the United States.

Traffic in both directions has been suspended at the San Ysidro port of entry, the agency said on Twitter.

U.S. President Donald Trump has raised alarms about the caravan of migrants as it approached the United States, and has deployed military forces to the border to support the Border Patrol.

All of Us Research Program | Asian American Community Spotlight - Duration: 1:00.

The All of Us Research Program is

an ambitious effort to gather health information

from one million or more people across the US.

Researchers will be able to use this information

to uncover new, more precise ways to prevent and treat disease,

and to keep people healthy.

The Asian American community

is the fastest growing demographic group in the US.

There are needs that go along with that population growth:

healthcare is pretty central among them.

The majority of the people do not speak English.

So, having culturally appropriate services

is a must in our community.

We know we have diversity in culture, in language,

but we also have diversity in our healthcare risk.

Immigrants come here for better opportunities for their children.

You invest a little more now,

and then you get the pay offs in the future.

This is an opportunity to be seen.

This is an opportunity to be heard,

and this is an opportunity to contribute to an initiative

that may potentially change lives going forward.
