Fernando Alonso cracks classic joke during F1 retirement party Alonso celebrated with his fellow drivers and numerous celebrities at the Amber Lounge in Abu Dhabi following the final Grand Prix of the season. The exclusive club charged a minimum entrance fee of €750 (£665) for partygoers who wanted to mingle with the F1 stars. The most premium package would have set you back €20,550 (£18,238).
Those figures would be small change to the top drivers and Alonso appeared in good spirits while closing out his 17th season in style. The two-time World Champion finished 11th in his final outing, which Lewis Hamilton capped off a stunning season with victory in the Middle East. During the afterparty, which featured performances from Craig David and Sigala, Alonso took to the stage to deliver a farewell speech.
However, the microphone briefly malfunctioned and stopped working, to which Alonso quipped: "OK, that's just part of my career." The technical glitch was quickly corrected and Alonso went on to speak for the final time as an F1 driver. The Spaniard is expected to drive in the IndyCar series next year as he hunts the final leg of his Triple Crown - the Indy 500.
"It has been pleasure racing with these champions and I feel privileged," Alonso said after his final race. "Thanks to everyone and to Formula One. "I will always be a fan of this sport." Alonso hinted at a possible return to F1 in 2020. "I think next year I needed a break and I needed to find again motivation and relax a little bit for a very busy year," he added. "In 2020 I'm open for different things. Maybe a full season in Indy car, a full season in Formula One again. "There are a lot of things in the view.".
