I've got a question for you what's scarier then ghosts vampires or hundreds of
kids coming to your front door on Halloween night? You guessed it.
Uninsured motorists driving in Louisiana. Did you know that 15% of the drivers in
Louisiana do not have insurance and 40% of the drivers in Louisiana have
only the most basic coverage. So why should that scare you? Because if you're
an accident with one of these drivers you can be stuck having to pay your own
medical expenses and unable to recover any lost wages from this accident. So
what can you do? In Louisiana we have what we call uninsured motorist
coverage if you're involved in an accident and the person that caused the
accident either has no insurance or they don't have sufficient insurance.
That's when your UM coverage will take into effect.
So let me give you an example of that. Let's say Thibodeaux hits you and you
have pretty significant damages from the accident. And Thibodeaux he's too busy
doing his thing crawfishing and LSU football, Saints game. He's not worried
about insurance so he didn't even bother to get insurance. You have significant
damages. Let's say for instance your case is worth about $100,000 and Thibodeaux he
doesn't have anything. He's got a pirogue but he hasn't have anything else so he
doesn't really have any assets and in your situation unfortunately you don't
have UM coverage. Well in that scenario your hosed. You can't collect anything
from Thibodeaux for your losses and you don't have UM coverage through your own policy
to recoup your losses. Let me give you another example I'm going to use
Boudreaux. Boudreaux hits you and Boudreaux
he's got minimum limits and you've got significant injuries again from this
accident but in this scenario you do have UM coverage let's say you have a
hundred thousand UM coverage and let's say that your damages are let's say a
hundred thousand dollars when you consider your past wages, your pain and
suffering, and your medical expenses. Boudreaux's policy is going to pay you your
full $15,000. Well that leaves you with eighty five thousand dollars that hasn't
been paid well that's where your UM policy which you have a hundred thousand
in coverage will come in and pay you eighty five thousand dollars to make
you whole again. So they're going to pay you for your pain and suffering,
which we call general damages they're going to pay you for your medical expenses
your lost wages all that would come out of that portion of your policy you're
UM portion again that's a scenario where Boudreaux he simply didn't
have enough insurance coverage he was under-insured. Now you know I've heard
this many times is that you know why do I need UM coverage?
I've got health insurance it's going to pay me for my medical expenses. That's true
but what it doesn't do it doesn't pay you for your pain and suffering damages
it doesn't pay you for your lost wages so if you're out of work from a serious
accident and let's say you're out of work for six months
health insurance is not going to pay you any of your lost wages. Now of course
they're going to pay you for your medical expenses but they're not going to pay your lost wages
and they're certainly not paying you for your pain and suffering during that six
month period of time. That's all going to be recovered out of your UM portion of
your policy. That's if you have it and that's why you need to have it again
because you know 15% of our drivers in Louisiana don't have insurance at all
and 40% don't have enough coverage so that's why you want to have UM coverage

go wrong doesn't mean it has to.
