Upcycling fashion the Swiss way - Duration: 3:23.

This is a dress made from an old trenchcoat.

Here you can still see the original collar of the trenchcoat.

The new collar was made from the sleeve.

And the whole garment was sewn by hand?

Exactly. Yes.

"Re-made in Switzerland" or "turning old into new" -

This is how Rafael Kouto makes fashion in Zurich Schwamendingen.

He uses only recycling materials,

with clothing from TexAid, bicycle inner tubes or plastic bottles.

The half-Togolese African artist was inspired

to recycle the waste materials.

It's always surprising to see

the finished garments.

That's what's exciting about working with old clothes:

At the start you can't really imagine it

but in the end you create something of high quality,

that people want to wear.

Even with his first collection he got off to

a great start at Mode Suisse in February 2018.

Before that he studied in Basel and Amsterdam,

doing internships with international fashion labels such as

Alexander McQueen and Maison Margiela.

The founder of the Mode Suisse fashion platform, Yannick Aellen, keeps a close eye

on the fashion scene and its trends.

He is certain: Rafael Kouto has his finger on the pulse.

Rafael Kouto has a very individual dialogue

with all his upcycling couture stories.

He is addressing these important issues.

He upcycles old pieces and really transforms them.

That's where his uniqueness lies.

As he has a strong background in fashion,

he also does it in a very interesting way.

In the fast-paced fashion industry, more and more

and ever cheaper clothing is coming on to the market.

People are slowly rethinking their ways

and even the big fashion houses are using old stock

and bringing vintage collections into stores.

That's a good thing.

There's a ridiculous amount of fashion, fast fashion being consumed.

It's important

to raise awareness of these issues

all over the world.

It would be incredibly arrogant of the fashion industry

to simply go on just producing.

At the Textilwerk studio in Winterthur, Rafael Kouto passes on his knowledge

in an upcycling course - his way of raising awareness.

I've brought along a few books by African artists

who work with upcycling.

I have a few examples here.

With his help, the participants can

breathe new life into mass-produced garments.

So that people can see how the clothes are produced,

and recognize the value of the garments.

Rafael Kouto represents a new generation of fashion designers,

for whom consumption and sustainability are not mutually exclusive.
