US suspends $1.66 billion security aid to Pakistan | President Donald Trump's directive in this regard

The United States has suspended $1. 66 billion in security assistance to Pakistan, following President Donald Trump's directive in this regard early this year, the Pentagon has said.

"$1. 66 billion of security assistance to Pakistan is suspended," Col Rob Manning, spokesman of the Department of Defense told reporters in an email response to questions on Tuesday. No further breakdown of the suspended security assistance to Pakistan was provided.

According to David Sedney, who served as Deputy Assistant Secretary Defense for Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia during the previous Obama administration, the blocking of military assistance to Pakistan, which began in January of this year is a strong signal of American frustration.

"But, so far Pakistan has taken no serious steps to address the core US concern - that Pakistan tolerates and often encourages groups which use violence against Pakistan's neighbours," Sedney told PTI.

"Pakistan's leaders have promised cooperation, but beyond words, serious cooperation has not happened, therefore President Trump is frustrated and so are most Americans," he said in response to a question. "This frustration does not ignore the suffering that Pakistani people have undergone.

It just asks Pakistan to recognise that it should act to help stop the suffering of others," said the Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think-tank.

Previously, Sedney was at the Department of State and the National Security Council, as well as Acting President of American University of Afghanistan.

He was a part of the Pentagon when Osama bin Laden was killed in a daring raid by US commandoes in Abbottabad. Over the last few days Trump has said that people in Pakistan knew about the presence of bin Laden.

"On Osama bin Laden, I agree with the views of Carlotta Gall of the New York Times who reported in her book, 'The Wrong Enemy' that a very small group of very senior Pakistani military leaders knew about Osama Bin Laden's presence in Pakistan.

I have not seen any evidence that his presence in Abbottabad was widely known by many in Pakistan," Sydney told PTI in an interview.

"What the US seeks, what President Trump is asking for, is for Pakistan to take the same kind of measures against the Taleban, against Lashkhar-e-Taiba, and against all groups in Pakistan that threaten Pakistan's neighbours," he said.

"But, we still see the Taleban moving weapons, fighters and money through Pakistan.

We still see Taleban commanders taking refuge in Pakistan, keeping their families in Pakistan, holding meetings and conducting training in Pakistan, and shipping explosives from Pakistan into Afghanistan," Sydney alleged.

We see leaders of sanctioned organisations acting freely in Pakistan and speaking publicly in favour of violence, he said. "If Pakistan would take some strong measures against the Taleban, peace would come to Afghanistan quickly," he argued.

S. Korea, U.S. still discussing joint military exercises: S. Korea - Duration: 1:45.

South Korea and the United States are still holding talks... over their plans for next

year joint military exercises.

The two sides even discussed scaling back one of the biggest combined drills, in order

to support diplomacy with Pyeongyang.

Kan Hyeong-woo gets us up to speed with the developments.

Seoul's Defense Ministry said on Thursday that discussions over joint military exercises

between South Korea and the United States... are still underway between the two nations.

At the 50th annual Security Consultative Meeting back in October,... the allies' top military

leaders agreed to announce their official plan for next year's joint military exercise

by December 1.

"Seoul's Defense Ministry and Washington's Defense Department are maintaining close military

cooperation,... to support ongoing diplomatic efforts regarding North Korea's denuclearization.

In consideration of the security situation,... the two allies are reviewing plans for next

year's joint military exercises."

These comments came... after U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis said on Wednesday

local time in Washington... that one of the allies' biggest joint exercises, 'Foal Eagle',

will be reduced in scope... so as not to hinder nuclear talks with North Korea.

Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon, Mattis added... that the joint exercise is being

reorganized to keep it at a level that will not be harmful to diplomacy.

But he declined to comment on any further details on what a scaled-back exercise would

look like.

Foal Eagle is one of the biggest joint exercises between the two allies,... involving hundreds

of thousands of troops from ground, sea and air taking part in live training drills.

2018 was really a great year for Lufthansa Cargo

but also for the market.

We have seen tremendous growth

and a good demand by our customers.

The biggest challenge I see for the next year is

with the strong economy the number of people we need

will increase and it's very difficult to get them.

Not just for us but also for the entire industry.

So that's what we have to watch out for.

But we also have to see how we collaborate at the airports.

We have congestions, we need the trucker

engaging with the airport authorities,

the handling agents and the customs

– to make sure that we don't waste time at the airports.

In the summer we also started and launched

our cooperation with United Cargo.

We have been phasing in and there

have been first experience for our customers.

The positive experience is that they have more direct services,

we have better recoveries and we offer a much broader network.

So there's something to bet watched out for next year.

We are building on a strong cooperation

with the United Cargo team.

There have been a lot of preparations

and I'm most proud of it that we have a strong trust.

A trust we can build on and offer our customer

the best service.

S. Korea working with U.S., UN on sanctions exemptions for joint railway inspections with N. Korea - Duration: 0:45.

sanctions on North Korea... for the joint inspections of railways.

Speaking to the reporters on Thursday,... an unnamed official from Seoul's Unification

Ministry said... the final schedule for the inspections are likely to be determined...

after the conclusion of those talks.

This comes... after Washington is known to have expressed (quote) "strong support" for

the inter-Korean railway project.

The two Koreas agreed to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for connecting and modernizing the

cross-border railways and roads... either later this month or early next month.

In August, South Korea attempted to send a team of experts to the North for a check of

railways there,... but it fell apart after it was rejected by the UN Command.
