welcome once again to another Sunday live English and a very cold and chilly
England it really does feel as if winter has arrived so here we go again
I thought I would start today's livestream by showing you two very
interesting words the words are evocative and provocative evocative and
provocative evocative means to bring to mind a distant memory normally through
an action or maybe a word or something that you have seen something is
evocative it brings back a pest memory or feeling and then we have provocative
provocative means to create a reaction quite often a negative one to be
provocative is to look for attention you normally want to create a reaction from
people by the thing you do perhaps you say something or do something that
creates a reaction you do something that is provocative the big question today of
course will I be evocative or provocative or perhaps even both after
all it's a Sunday afternoon it's just after two o'clock here in the UK and
this is live English
live from Much Wenlock in England on a Sunday afternoon this is live English
yes we are back baby
did-did-did dude it is Sunday it's a fun day it's time to improve your English
with another livestream across the World Wide Web
on YouTube we are all here together again I hope you are feeling super duper
hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today are you okay
I hope so are you happy happy and cool I really really hope so here we go once
again it's another livestream and I hope you are feeling super duper I really do
what a busy week it's been here preparing all sorts of things because of
course next week we see the arrival of December December arrived next week and
of course we only have another four maybe five weeks until the end of 2018
and of course during December we also have my favorite time of year Christmas
I love Christmas it gives me a very good excuse to behave like a big kid so I
have my Christmas lights on the outside of the house although they they haven't
been turned on yet so next weekend I will be turning on my Christmas lights
which are now outside the house I hope you are well today we have so much so
much to do today so many things to show you and of course there is a slight clue
here on the screen right now do you like my my little fashion outfit
do you like my clothes today I look very super and cool I think because that is
what we are talking about today we will be talking all about
fashion words to do with clothing fashion image lots and lots of different
words we can use to describe that particular thing and of course fashion
is not just about clothing fashion is also related to behavior things that
people like generally you might say that here on YouTube sometimes people are
fashionable or unfashionable so maybe during a certain period of time perhaps
people watch one particular YouTube personality and maybe after a while they
get bored with that person and then they move on to someone else
am i talking about a particular person I don't know maybe I am who knows it is a
very cold day as I mentioned at the start of today's livestream shall we
have a look outside it is so cold today very cold and there is the view that is
a live view looking outside the window of my studio and you can see that
everything today is looking very very dull and dare I say it quite misty and
murky very murky very misty and also very cold autumn is now starting to make
way for winter let's have a little of you let's look over there oh isn't that
nice so you can see some of the trees have lost their leaves whilst others
have kept theirs and you can see all of the green trees now those trees will not
lose their leaves they are called evergreens so if a tree is just
described as an evergreen it means that it will never lose its leaves even
during the winter months so there it is looking outside and I know what you're
thinking where is mr. Steve well mr. Steve at the moment is also outside he's
very busy outside doing some gardening chores but a little bit later on he will
be here talking about today's big subject which is fashion and when you
think of fashion you always think of clothes the type of music maybe that
people listen to but quite often we think of the way a person dresses the
way they look later on we are going to take a look at some very interesting
types of fashion that were around in the 1970s it is a period of time that myself
and also mr. Steve are both very familiar with because we grew up during
the 1970s and the 1980s we were youngsters can you believe it we were
young people at that period of time I know it seems such a long time ago now
talking of things that are fashionable we have some very fashionable people on
the live chat at the moment shall we have a look at the live chat okay then
oh hello there matrix hello matrix matrix 2018 says hi and can
I say congratulations to you because you are first on the live chat
yeah congratulations matrix also in second place today we have blue thunder

is actually a little video clip that was filmed by blue thunder

and my real name is sky I'm from Vietnam and I'm now 13 just oh this is my garden
and you can you can hear that he is my real sound I made this video to show my
voice to mr. Duncan mr. Steve and some of my friend I T asked Julie G and Petro

son don't annoy everyone okay goodbye goodbye blue thunder oh did you enjoy

Pedro chasing you down the road maybe Belarusian and Pedro will be chasing you
at the same time Beatriz is here also mah Avaya or other hello to you also we

Brazil also we have SK limited hello to you as well I believe you have been here
before on the live chat also we have maroon maroon creeper hello to you thank
you very much for joining me also we have TS and o we have ring sack
hello rung sack I haven't seen you for a long time so it's very nice to see you
all here also Yamina hello you heat Yamina thank you
for joining us on the live chat lots of people today joining us live isn't that
lovely oh I've broken it look did you see that
I've broken it I've broken the live chat I do that every week I'm very sorry
about that okay I fixed it now I pressed the wrong
button I think so lots of things to come your way can I first clear up some
unfinished business some unfinished business from last
week we had the mystery idiom and I forgot to give you the answer
once again I always forget so here is the answer to last week's mystery idiom
for those who have been waiting for the past week to find out what it is the
mystery idiom is hold the fort hold the fort the meaning of hold the fort is
take responsibility for a situation while another person is temporarily
absent you take charge for a short time you hold the fort so there it is
the answer to the mystery idiom from last week and I forgot to tell you what
it was so there I hope that has answered your question for those who are
wondering what it was so here we go we are live today lots of things to talk
about yesterday we went for a lovely meal can you guess what we had yesterday
I will give you a clue it is something that is lovely to eat during the winter
months a lovely meal that really does fill you up yesterday we went into town
and we had stew and dumplings and there it is there is the actual meal that we
had yesterday stew and dumplings absolutely delicious so you can see
there is stew there is meat there are potatoes and there is mr. Steve eating
and he looks very hungry look how he is putting the food into his mouth so fast
the problem with mr. Steve sometimes is he's very greedy I think so sometimes
Steve can be very greedy and there is my meal you can see there are lots of
mashed potatoes cabbage and also carrots and wait a minute
mr. Steve mr. Steve put my dumpling gown how dare you did you see that mr. Steve
tried to steal my dumpling he's very naughty so there it is a lovely winter
meal the sort of meal that you really want to eat on a cold winter's day once
again mr. Steve is pushing the food into his mouth go on mr. Steve go on put the
dumpling into your mouth no that's very rude but a horrible thing to do Steve so
there is Steve and myself yesterday having a lovely meal in town and we had
stew and dumplings have you ever tried stewing dumplings they are absolutely
lovely so there it is the meal we had yesterday
talking of food I'm feeling a little bit hungry today because I've had no
breakfast I was so busy preparing today's livestream I haven't had
anything to eat can you believe it we're going to take a look at some words now
some words that are very special and the reason why they are special is because
they sound like the thing they describe so something that sounds like the thing
it describes is called imitative imitative a word that sounds like the
thing it describes I will give you an example now here's an interesting word
and this word describes the sound that it names sizzle sizzle it's a great word
that sizzle the word sizzle describes the sound of something
sizzling maybe you are cooking something maybe you are frying something the sound
of something frying is sizzle so sizzle is an imitative word it imitates the
sound that it names another word here is an interesting one - like this one I
love this word very much plop plop plop if something plops it is that normally
describing the sound of something dropping into water so if you drop a
stone into a lake the sound you hear will be plop plop so the sound and the
word actually sound the same plop plop it can also be used as a slang word to
mean going for a poopoo so you can say that you need to go for a plop plop so
that word imitates the sound that it names another one now very similar to
sizzle fizz fizz so fizz is kind of like sizzle it is a very similar sound maybe
you have a fizzy drink so when you pour the drink it will make a fizzing sound
please fees and two more of course we all know this one bang-bang so the word
bang describes the sound made by an explosion or something that drops
heavily bang bang you might bang on the door you might hear a loud bang
something goes bang a gun goes bang fireworks go bang so there it is another
word that's it sounds like the sound that it describes one more show you have
one more ok then Bing pop pop this is also a word that describes and also
sounds like the noise it is naming pop so if something goes pop it means it's a
sudden noise not as loud as a bang but still it is a sound that can make you
jump out of your skin pop pop it can also be used to describe
things that are popular so we can say pop to mean a sound like I don't know if
you are opening a champagne bottle the sound is pop pop and also it can be
used to describe something that is fashionable or popular talking of which
we are talking all about fashion today would you like to see a little bit from
one of my lessons all about fashion and this particular lesson was made many
years ago and you might notice that I look very
very young in this lesson hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are
you today are you okay I hope so are you happy I hope so in today's
lesson we will take a look at the ins and outs of a very big subject that
affects many of us the world of fashion the word fashion relates to any item or
behavior that is considered the most popular or relevant during a certain
time or with a particular group of people or something that generally
appeals to the majority in each group it can be used as a verb when creating
something into a certain shape or form it can also be used is a mess noun to
describe the marketing of clothes and cosmetics fashion is more than a word it
shapes our everyday way of living not to mention our behavior - when we
look back in time it seems as if every decade had its very own unique set of
styles and trends in the 1940s women mostly wore long skirts and men dressed
in suits and ties during this time there was no great following of fashion among
teenagers mainly due to a very different attitude towards the used at that time
the rule back then was that teenagers should be seen and not heard
although all that changed in a big way during the late
1950s with the birth of Rakhi roll music and the resulting fandom among the young
who listen to it the 1960s and 70s saw similar changes and as the decades
passed new trends and styles followed these days it seems as if everything
revolves around trends and fashion some people say that we have become too
obsessed with what to wear which mobile phone to carry and how to look what do
you think it would be fair to say that we all follow fashion in some way these
days it seems more important than ever to be in touch with what is popular and
in vogue although if a person becomes too obsessed with fashionable items and
their appearance then we may begin to dislike them and describe them as vain
shallow self-centered a victim of fashion
and we have more of that type of thing coming later on
yes it is Sunday it's a fun day it's time to improve your English live on
YouTube I hope you enjoyed that that particular lesson was made many many
years ago I think it was 2009 I made that so 9 years ago can you
believe it oh my goodness and I look so young then
but then some people say that I still look very very young isn't that nice
coming up to half past half past two in the UK and we are live across YouTube
for those that are wondering where mr. Steve is well can I just say that Steve
is still recovering from a very bad case of autumn madness
Oh mr. Steve you are so funny so Steve will be here in a few moments time but
we are talking about fashion today lots of things to do with fashion maybe
something that is fashionable fashionable if something is fashionable
it means it's something that a lot of people enjoy doing or they like to
follow it or copy it or maybe listen to it so there are many different ways of
using the word fashion and fashionable would you like to have a look at one of
my full English lessons we'll be taking a look at that in a moment
and of course the live chat is open as well for those who want to get involved
but first of all did you go to a Black Friday sale last Friday it was Black
Friday the day when all of the shops opened their doors and they they put on
lots of discounts and lots of sales to entice people into their shops would you
like to have a look at one particular Black Friday sale take a look at this
now this is something that makes me feel a little bit sad
look at that did you see that so that those people there were all trying to
get into the shop at the same time they were crushing against the front of the
shop in fact there were so many people pushing and shoving that the glass on
the front of the actual shop smashed it's shattered so there were so many
people trying to get in to the actual store so they could find their Black
Friday bargains so did you go to a Black Friday sale last week or did you not
bother personally myself I didn't I didn't do it I didn't go to any Black
Friday sales I didn't buy anything from anywhere on Friday so on Friday I didn't
buy a single thing but what about you did you go to the Black Friday sales did
you have a look did you find something that was useful did you get a bargain
there is nothing more exciting than getting a bargain but of course the
bargain has to be a good one so quite often if you go to a supermarket or a
store you might think that you are getting a really good bargain but maybe
that bargain isn't as good as you think it is so what about you have you been to
any Black Friday sales let's have a look at one of my full English lessons then
after this mr. Steve will be here the big question is what will mr. Steve be
wearing
it is possible to take very serious and deep topics and represent them with
metaphors to speak metaphorically is to represent something with an easily
identifiable sentence or phrase we can also use visual metaphors it is possible
to express the meaning of something visually here is a good example of a
metaphor and an idiom the trials and burdens that we have in Jordan life can
be summed up with this visual metaphor
as we go through life we often end up carrying or dragging lots of baggage in
this sense the baggage consists of all the bad things that have happened to us
the traumatic events the hardships the failures relationships that have left us
scarred the hurtful things that people have said to us those terrible moments
we would much rather forget we often refer to these things as emotional
baggage the further through life you walk then
the more baggage you have to take with you of course not all of us have to
carry so much baggage
dealing with each problem as it occurs can prevent you from having so much
emotional baggage to carry with you we tend to avoid having relationships with
people who have lots of baggage having said that it is impossible to go through
life without acquiring some emotional baggage perhaps it is more about how you
deal with it in the first place then what you end up having to carry
with you this particular visual metaphor is one that many of us can identify with
here's a funny word can you see it it looks like the word fishing but spelt
differently what the heck is that all about well I will tell you this word is
indeed pronounced as fishing but as you can see it is spelt with a pH at the
beginning this particular fishing means to attempt to obtain someone's personal
details such as their address or bank details by pretending to represent a
large well-known company this is normally done in the form of an email
for example you might receive an email from someone saying that they are from a
big bank they tell you that your account has been changed so you must send them
your personal details such as your credit card details or password so the
account can be reset of course the person writing is not from the bank they
are just trying to get your personal details they are fishing they are trying
to get your personal information from you through deception the person doing
the deceiving is called a Fisher so the next time you receive an email from
someone saying that they are from your bank or a large company or the orphan of
a millionaire be very careful as there is a chance that someone is fishing for
your personal details and your money
I love idioms don't you there are many expressions around that
relate to our own existence there can be no doubt that life has its
ups and downs there are sunny days and dark days happy times and sad times we
must take the rough with the smooth there will always be unexpected things
that come along to try and throw us off the path to happiness but we must take
it on the chin we have to grin and bear it
we must put on a brave face good fortune can be described as an upturn when
things start to get better we can say that there is light on the horizon a
glimmer of hope means that there is light at the end of the tunnel things
are getting better as I said many years ago in one of my earlier lessons without
sadness we would never really know what it is like to be truly happy
and of course you can find all of my lovely lessons on my youtube channel on
my playlists
do-do-do-do-do it is a Sunday it's a fun day it's time to improve your English
live on YouTube 20 minutes away from 3 o'clock here in the UK I don't know what
time it is where you are because I'm not there well here he is
I must say I am very very impressed by the way Steve looks you look absolutely
incredible here he is it's mr. Steve
hello mr. Duncan hello there oh yes I just come down from the estate you know
one of the horses was lame yet have it put down shot you know you can't tell
you can't let them carry on like that yes my thousand acre estate I've come
all the way down from there just to be in this share with you mr. Duncan today
later on I'm going to do some clay pigeon shooting and then we're off to
the pub to have a nice good meal what you'd say to that mr. Duncan you know
you know we were eating a meal yesterday do you want to see Steve eating a meal
this is what Steve does when he eats so so this is the the food we had yesterday
I showed this earlier and this is Steve and myself having a lovely meal
yesterday a lovely winter meal stew and dumplings and watched the way in which
Steve eats his food look at this he really pushes all of that food into his
mouth watch it here it goes one two three oh so there is Steve
eating and we had a lovely meal yesterday look stew and dumpling I
didn't know you were filming me at that point wasn't that delicious secretly
filming me as always and look what happens in a moment Steve tries to steal
my dumpling watch this look no no Steve no that is my dumpling no put it back I
should think so that's terrible I can't believe I can't believe that I can't
believe Steve tried to steal my dumpling well they did look very nice mr. Duncan
so I thought you know I'll have a go while you're filming you're distracted
I'll try and get two dumplings instead of just one
yes you look amazing thank you very much yes yes this out down from the thousand
acre estate look at this and what would you call this style sort of a country
gent yes Country Gentlemen a country gent they were sort of where these sort
of hats this is my father's hat by the way
you look like a gamekeeper or maybe a squire a squire exactly and I'm the I'm
the the Squires son so the squire a squire you don't really
hear that word anymore do you Swire an owner of lend so maybe they
have a large house and they own lots of land they are described as a squire
they've got an estate yes and a state of vast acreage of land where they've got
all sorts of businesses taking place we've got horses sheep in another field
they've probably got clay pigeon shooting going on somewhere else a bit
of fishing in the lake all sorts of things going on on these estates yes
very close I'll go to the county show whether but whether be displaying all
the all the various horses and cattle that they've got on their estate
probably grow wine with a certain particular name can you grow wine yes
grapes do they grow grapes so that do the bottles grow on the tree then you
can just pull them straight at the tree in the bottles of course I'm not quite
accurate see this is probably quite accurate this jacket the Hat the tie
plane reserved but the shirt they wouldn't normally run a white shirt
they'd wear a sort of a cheque sort of a light check shirt with a sort of a
flannelette sort of heavy heavy material I love all of these new words you keep
using so I think Steve so if I were to describe Steve's appearance I would say
that this is very traditional and mine my appearance is very modern so which
one do you prefer out there modern which one do you prefer so this is something
that looks very sort of trendy very stylish yes for about 1970 what are you
talking about as I did joking mr. Duncan well ribbing
the ribbing Joe these clothes came from China this is from China this this
clothing isn't that great and a I've got my lovely jumper and my my Robert trendy
looking what just snakeskin mr. Duncan it is not snakeskin it is plastic Oh
polythene it is it is fake well I would rather wear plastic than an animal so I
don't want to wear fur or leather so this actually isn't made from a dead
animal it's actually just plastic but it does look rather nice whenever we go to
Lake Verne we hotel I always wear this because I'm guaranteed to get everyone
everyone's looking at me for all the wrong reasons they stare at my my shiny
snakeskin jacket and they go wow look at that guy
what a guy they go oh dear he's not fitting in here wearing a strange jacket
that does not fit in with our ultra conservative way of thinking and
dressing as hotel I just like the atashi breeze through there without even a
comment I like the attention he does he's an attention seeker would you like
to have a look at the live chat no because I'm just wondering what people
are making of our appearance today because we look very different from how
we normally look you look amazing yeah I would never associate with somebody
dressed like that in my high status you should have a shot a country gent you
should have a shotgun over your shoulder yes and you should be shooting grouse or
shooting grouse or pheasant pheasants I'm off to do a bit of fox hunting later
as well no you can't do that though you bring that fox hunting here as damn anti
fox hunting people people is that what the hold is those doubt anti anti fox
hunting people they're all over the estate we have to have them arrested
regularly here is the live check yes let's have a look you know I like the
live chat oh it is knock yourself out so tommix birthday
today happy birthday to Tomic Oh happy birthday to Tom atomic he's watching us
on his birthday Tomic it's your birthday yes today
it's your birthday hip-hip-hooray let's have some applause for tommix birthday
can we sing happy birthday with that copyright they'll have the applause
first and how many candles Tomic are on your cake yes how many how many candles
this year yes many how many candles is it more than 21 I think Steve is asking
how old you are yes exactly so that's nice Tomic has a
birthday so congratulations to you lots of people by the way on the live
chat today let's go let's go to the real time so let's have a look so that was
the start of today's livestream and here it is now oh my goodness lots of people
are joining us someone has said someone said mr. Duncan we noticed that you
always sit in the same place when you have your meal that's true that's true
we do we always we always like to have the same table when we go for our our
little meal while being local celebrities you see we have to reserve
the table yeah I can't just walk in and just sit anywhere yes we have to be on
show in our table that we have the same one every week where people could see is
them then you know we're opening champagne all that sort of thing signing
autograph people are coming up and saying are you
mr. Duncan from YouTube and I say I say yes yes I am so I I write my autograph
and they go and they're happy so we always do that every week we have a
little corner a little secluded corner where we sit and we have the same table
in fact the other week the other week I wanted some extra mashed potatoes do you
remember what happened you got them yes well I got them yes but
but the lady who was serving us says don't worry I'll go and tell them who
you are exactly and everybody looked round yes everyone looked round they
thought they thought I was some celebrity was joking but they said you
know it was a joke that worked the way she said it yes I don't think she did
mean it as a joke it was real she was really impressive
she said swelling yes okay then to calm down again okay you got it you got to
learn this Judy discipline it's a very it's a no studio
discipline where I'm concerned mr. Duncan you should know that I've noticed
that and serve the viewers as they're clicking away talking of birthdays it is
my less time to watch you live before reaching 30 so Jimmy Jimmy is about to
reach the age of 30 so when is your birthday
Jimmy please let us know must be this week mr. Steve did you enjoy the video
of blue thunder blue thunder was on the roof of his house well I haven't seen it
yet mr. Duncan just told me before I came on with him that he's shown the
video of you blue thunder but I wasn't here to watch it so I we will watch the
show later and I will see the video you can watch it again if you want okay
watching now here it is here is the video that blue thunder sent everybody
sees me rotunda and my real name is sky I'm from Vietnam and I'm now 13 just oh
this is my garden and you can you can he is my real sound I made this video to
show my voice to mr. Duncan mr. Steve and some of my friend I T asked Julie G
and Petro and bi Lucia so thank you for listening to my sound and I hope that my
son don't annoy everyone okay goodbye thank you very much once again to blue
thunder thanks for that so there we go so a few weeks ago a few weeks ago we
were going to play it but then we didn't so today I thought I would play it just
for bluth and that's roughly what I tell you what's impressed me they're great
you must be growing lots of vegetables on the roof hmm and you've got that
water heater because you must have lots of hot Sun there so that's heating your
water I'd love so that that's quite
eco-friendly yes heating the water I thought I'd find
that fascinating I like I like hot countries always have those on their
roofs we don't have them here because it never gets hot enough to heat our water
well the solar panel darling the solar like solar panels I think so but I think
that think they'd sort of heats the waters it's going through the pipes yes
that's pretty good yes so well done well done that that's
very ecologically friendly it is anyway we're not talking about that today we're
talking about so it more important than that we are talking all about fashion
fashion fashion fashion fashion you mean fashion fashion fashion fashion
fashion fashion fashion what a great effect mr. Duncan it's like an echo
we'll see what it's like later will we how oh yeah somebody said that sue Kat
said that I look like somebody from the persuaders really yes oh okay
referencing another 70s TV show showing your age suit cat
that we're all the same sort of age I can't believe that you know that show
that persuaders sue cat knows all these old shows good you must be a similar age
to ourselves the persuaders was a TV show that was on in the seventies in
fact I think it's the late 60s it probably was and it starred Roger Moore
Roger Moore who of course is more famous for playing James Bond and also can you
guess can you name the other person oh now I do know yes Roger Moore Roger
Moore and another famous actor who died he was a famous actor and he was in one
of the most famous films in fact a lot of people believe it's one of the the
best films ever made give me a clue some like it hot is the
name of the film and he was also in that you see with a Doris Day with Marilyn
Monroe and Monroe even that says Marilyn Monroe I'm like it hot and Jack Lemmon
so they were in some like it hot I know his name and later later he lost his
hair but he would wear this terrible wig all the time did he write yes okay who
is this I can't remember his name give me a clue give me his first name well if
it gave you his first name you'd know who it was
not sure what it was quite unusual at the time for them to be in a program
together the other the other actor Tony Curtis yes I I knew it
yes Tony Curtis you didn't know it if you know if you move if you knew who it
was though why didn't you tell me yes Tony Curtis he was very famous at the
time yes Tony Curtis was that was one of those matinee idols
yes matinee idol when he was very young he was very fashionable lots of people
like to see his movies are we are talking all about fashion today things
to do with fashion of course when we think of fashion we think of advertising
we think of clothes we think of shapes and things that people like to look at
maybe things people like to listen to and there is mr. Steve sneeze I was I
was wondering where Steve's sneeze was today it's my weekly show sneeze it's
become a bit of a tradition there soon as I stand here I want to sneeze every
week maybe you're allergic to me it's probably that plastic thing you've got
on it maybe it's might aftershave it's probably these old clothes because this
this is my father's hat it's probably full of dust this hat that Steve is
wearing belonged to your your your late father it did indeed and he used to wear
it was used to wear these sorts of hats because they were very popular when he
was growing up everybody wore a hat like this kid fur would you know not it did
well it's sort of like a cap yes it's a cap yes so normally people that work on
the land or maybe the own land farmers so farmers will often wear these types
of hats but of course over the years they've become very fashionable quite
fashionable my eyes are watering we actually saw were you actually spoke to
a farmer did we have the night do you remember well there's lots of farmers
really where we spoke to an actual farmer farmer and because we were
looking at his cows and a map to feed them and he was chatting away and he had
a hat on just like this but typical farmer he must I don't think he ever
takes it off because it was so dirty it had this massive grease patch all around
the front where he must have just she's done all the time never washed it
it was absolutely filthy wasn't it it was but then he he works on the leg
working other than sweating toiling on the land who's working hard unlike us
I'm not criticizing we're just an observation it sounded like you were
good to sign this hat for about 30 years and probably never tasted of even
written probably goes to bed in it but yes my father had a whole selection of
these and I kept them after he died and who would have thought that I'd be
wearing it today live in front of literally millions of people it's
incredible you look amazing though you look amazing today I must say I'm very
impressed so I didn't know what Steve was going to wear to be honest I had no
idea what he was going to wear so back to the live chat because we haven't said
hello to many people together have we no so let's have a look at the live chat
once again Oh lots of I think we have a lot of new people here today tastic I
think if it's your first time if it's your first time we will give you a
little round of applause so we have lots of people a lot of people sing happy
birthday to Tomic isn't that lovely isn't that nice telling us how old he is
yet so yes I like that thank you tsukete for mentioning the TV show called the
persuaders incredible now we're not hunting any animals don't
worry we were just joking oh no no we don't we don't hunt animals quite off
quite often the animals will hunt us they will chase us around the fields
quite often bulls yes mr. Steve looks like Sherlock Holmes yes
yes if only you had his pipe I could have the pipe yes and it but probably
not a white shirt more of a sort of a duller thick woollen shirt with it with
a light check on it yeah that's not the contrarian sway I think Steve is
obsessed with chick shirts also you're wearing the wrong hat have I of course
Sherlock Holmes traditionally he would wear a
deerstalker that's right a type of hat called a deer stalk evoking the good old
time says volunteer it's not nice yes yes sort of nineteen
thirties forties fifties well-to-do men would wear this sort of an outfit I'd
probably have boots on that come up to the knees maybe even what do they call
those trousers where they're sort of tied at the ankles they call them
breeches reaches or knickerbockers knickerbockers that have those on
because that had just come off my horse yes probably but obviously not anymore
I I would like to think that I'm of sort of posh stock yes
royalty okay actually do you remember when we went out once somebody we went
out to a museum once a living museum the Black Country Museum in the Black
Country Inn near Dudley in the Midlands and it's a museum where of the the
old-time sort of what the Black Country the Industrial Revolution all that sort
of thing and you go there and there are people dressed up in old clothes yes in
costume in costumes and we went in to look at one and somebody thought I was
Prince Edward I said oh it's Prince Edward yes do you remember that you do I
don't remember that at all well I do I've always remembered it because people
think I look like royalty you see mr. Duncan and I'm often mistaken for a
member of the royal family yes you do have many similarities my eyes are close
together and theirs are as well I think that's what gives it away and the hair
loss the hair loss of course yeah can you believe that Prince Harry Prince
Harry is now losing his hair so Prince William has lost his hair and now Prince
Harry apparently is starting to lose his hair as well so I thought I'd throw that
in isn't that important I don't know why yes of course it's important please
you're secretly pleased because you want them to lose their hair like you have
yet you want them all to go bald and ugly and well and and all it's important
because Prince William is the heir to the throne sothey no heir to the throne
yes he's we could describe him as the ball
old to the Fred thrown it's not easy to say that I think no air to the threat
that's better yes that was my joke by the way I've got
lots of words today mr. Duncan associated with fashion and clothes
really yes just I just I could've I could've done twice as many there were
so many I've got a whole pile of them down here so I can't wait to talk to you
Old English style that's right yes mr. Steve has old English style and mr.
Steve looks very elegant so it would appear that people like liked you more
than me so they like the traditional appearance of mr. Steve rather than my
my rather modern appearance so they like yours so maybe the next time we go out
into town maybe you could dress like that oh well I'd see what response we
get they will think that you are the local landowner maybe I get free meals I
think so so that's the live chat we are going to take a quick look at some
fashion that was around many years ago so as I mentioned earlier mr. Steve and
myself we both grew up in the 1970s 1980s and we remember that period of
time very vividly fondly but do you remember the types of fashion that were
around especially during the 1970s I do now between you and me now this is just
my own opinion but I think that fashion nowadays is very dull and everything
there's there's no color there's no style everything is very dull there
seems to be no imagination when it comes to modern fashion but if you go back to
the 1970s well let's take a look at the 1970s take a look at this Steve
there's the 1970s look at all of those amazing clothes laid trousers flares so
trousers that are very wide you also had Punk so people would dress in
they would put pieces of metal through their noses and they would have bright
red or maybe bright orange hair and of course that particular style of hair you
can see on the screen now is called a Mohican and then you have the suave suit
isn't that isn't it I met I love that suit by the way that that looks like the
type of suit that they would wear in the stylistics yes a pop group that's right
called the stylistics very sort of trendy back in the 70s he used to be
very distinct fashions in the seventies and in the eighties as well in the
eighties it was great big wide shoulder pads and high-waisted trousers yes we're
talking about the 7 to 17 well of the remark what I'm what I'm saying is I was
agreeing with you that now there isn't really you couldn't pinpoint any
particular fashion no it's just a bit of everything yes everything is fashion now
whereas in the seventies it was very specific
yes but what what is new fashion now is very dull and dismal there's no colour
if you go into a shop now to buy clothing it's all the same colour gray
gray and black and there's nothing is nothing there's nothing to wear although
having said that I'm wearing gray and black grays and blacks it's the same
with cars have you noticed particularly German cars that people buy houses
particularly houses and Mercedes they're always there always some shade of silver
somewhere between silver and black and there's about 20 shades in between they
often joke about how does color color if you look up that the colors of Audi cars
there's probably one red one a white one one blue one and then about 20 shades of
somewhere between silver and black yes so that is the fashion so that's the
other thing I remember about the seventies so when you think about things
like cars cars were all sorts of different colors you had red cars yellow
cars orange cars yes green cars you never see green cars actually green is
coming back Oh Ike I mean is coming back it used to be seen as very unlucky
but now if you if you buy a car that isn't some shade of gray people think
that you're not sophisticated see that color particularly in a car has become a
sign of sophistication oh I'm better than you Oh fancy buying a a red car Oh
No you've got to have a shade of gray in a car to be sophisticated okay black
with and people always have black seats now
I mean all that there's nothing worse in a car than black leather seats they're
hot they're dull and but people think if you have a you know like a tan leather
or or a beige leather in a car they think you're old-fashioned yeah I have
no idea what you're talking about I want a cars already I don't know how we got
onto the subject of cars I'm talking about clothings from the so let's have
another look at this well there's another fashion you see because black
men in the 70s always had an afro hairstyle
oh yes the big the big hair the big hair where is now you never see that
virtually all black people now cut their hair very short with us but the mend
anyway but once again but once again that's changing because I've noticed
that big hair among black people is is actually coming back it so you well yes
I've just said that that's why I just said oh I'm just I just said that
sentence you see that's why I said it all I'm saying is it you know especially
young young black kids that they're having that afro again so the big the
big hair is coming back right okay I'm just jealous because I haven't got much
hair anymore here's another one let's have a look at
this picture now oh my goodness Steve Steve oh yes I think this is pretty
pretty good evidence of just how bad the style could be and men always had
mustaches in the 70s didn't they that was quite common well they have them now
but yes but I'm saying not so much now in the 70s a moustache was very common
yes mustaches and especially beards are very popular now but you can see I think
the fashion in the 70s was everything that was worn a
the waist was tight and everything below the waist was very loose yes and baggy
so I think that would probably be the best way of describing 70s fashion so
everything was tight above the waist and then below the waist everything was very
loose you can see the trousers there they are very loose trousers my mother
bought me a pair of flared trousers flared jeans and they were incredibly
annoying which is presumably why they haven't really come back into fashion
because when you've got all that material around your ankle it's very
noisy when you're walking it flaps around and if it gets wet it's
horrendous so the so the trousers would come down and then they would go out
they would tape out they would and they were really wide I used to have a pair
of Flair's many years before we met and they were so wide they were really white
they must have been about 20 inches at the bottom and they would just flap in
the wind it's truing so we'll have a look at
flares in a moment but first of all here's another one is something you
might recognize Steve a poncho a poncho and things that were knitted so things
that were knitted using wool so you can see there is a jumper on the right and
on the left you can see something called a poncho and of course Poncho's are a
type of clothing that mr. Steve is very familiar with
you know what I think Steve would make a brilliant model
it's a Sunday it's a fun day it's time to improve your English if you are
improving your English maybe you are having difficulty reading or maybe
listening or maybe speaking I hope these lessons and these live streams will help
you here we go mr. Steve you have some words to give us soon I thought you
meant now but you can put them on the table that's okay I was ready to go then
have a quick look at the live chat show without what you're moving up to we will
have another look at the live chat because I'm always interested to see
what's happening on the live chat to be honest so there we go
so what do you think Steve look at that lots of lovely comments the rain poncho
video yes we just did that very quickly didn't we off the cuff that's it ah
there we go off the cuff I've got it I've got a phrase off the cuff to show
later okay what what to do with what to do with words connected with clothing
clothes yes the cuff that's what we're talking about today words to do with
clothes clothing things that you wear and apparently there are quite a lot of
them there are more than you would think there are many words to do with clothing
yes ooh cat cars from the 70s yes I love cars from the 70s as well because they
just had there was such a variety of shapes cars now of I think they're much
more bore that they've got the styling of a car now have you noticed and you've
often commented on this that they're just the most bizarre styling that
someone in modern cars some of them are quite ugly just these bizarre angles and
and there's one particular car now what's it called I don't know it's a
Nissan like it's like an S it's like a sort of a small SUV okay and it's it's
got to be the the Nissan Juke that's it oh that's right hey but don't some
people call it the Nissan joke well that's what I called it in word once on
and because it was the most bizarre looking car I mean it certainly stands
out I'm not gonna criticize it because probably somebody's got one burlock how
burl up on the live chat says my parents had a Citroen 2cv in the 1970s well they
were very popular cars for people who were sort of anti-establishment
eco-warriors very cheap form of reliable form of transport but if you drove a 2cv
in England then you people would think you were a bit of a sort of eco warrior
yes that sort of person you were you sort of war you probably a bit of a you
wanted to get about but you didn't want the excess of a big car polluting the
planet so you would drive a 2cv because that was showing that you were sort of
more of a caring person more environmentally aware friend
some people would said that it looked like a pram that was turned upside down
or a snail yes I think they're bringing them back I think they're going to yes I
thought they stopped making them because they were dangerous well they were there
but they were actually yet they were actually produced obviously by Citroen I
think back in the 1940s or something like that so that they were they got
this an amazing ability to just go through fields they've got this amazing
articulation of the wheels so that they could go over lumps and bumps in the
fields in France where where were the moderators by the way because we've got
somebody spamming and the moderators aren't even getting rid of them so right
there's a there's somebody spamming there can you see on the screen there
they are spamming are they so yes well yes yes that's because I just said so
they're spamming that's it you see you see there it is you see this spam that's
what spam looks like Steve sexy Zaher Zaher Yarra yes I think it's a lady who
wants to look at her naked body right okay but we're not going to no
interested love sorry so yeah you are definitely barking up
the wrong tree definitely I live in oh sorry about that
sue cat says I live in córdoba córdoba córdoba in
Argentina probably roll the are very mr. Duncan Oh dog but that's it the spam has
gone now Oh as gastic I think I think my
moderators have fallen asleep sue cats retracted a message what was she saying
was it rude where Oh what did you say sue cat yes exactly
what did you say I want to know now Thank You Pedro Thank You Federico for
doing that quick off the mark sue cats got a got a metal gray cut car
never mind okay what am I gonna get these some of
these words as mr. doe I wasn't sure where that was going then Trabant yes a
Trabant oh go back up mr. Duncan oh here we go
stop Carrodus Trabant isn't that I think that's a Russian car isn't it a Trabant
I don't think it's a Russian car please correct me you are the car person not me
I think it's a famous sort of Russian car I think Oh No yes no no it's a sort
I think it's it a three-wheeled car it's just sort of quite a basic car is it
you're the car expert maybe it's not Russian okay then
but where's Cara desk from but yes I do remember the trip and it looks like a
sort of a blob sure it had three wheels yes okay then a Trabant so where was the
Trabant made I don't know I can't remember no not you I'm not I'm not
broadcasting my live stream to you I'm broadcasting to the world there I'm
asking the world to let us know oh I can't believe I'm still having to
describe and explain these things anyway Trabant was produced in Germany Oh
Germany so you were kind of near I wasn't here by about a thousand and a
half miles VW Beetle wasn't that it wasn't the Hitler car yes well it's true
yes the the VW Beetle was actually designed by Adolf Hitler that's amazing
that's incredible but then you have to also be careful Steve because his
favorite car was the Mercedes true he Hitler
his Mercedes they are nice cars he have to be careful he was right about that
okay Steve said that not me yeah we won't say that we were cut off
all I can say is Hitler was wrong about everything
apart from Mercedes which were a good cars major that's probably the only car
that was being made in Germany at the time
East Germany that's right East Germany okay that's good that's right
yes you say you say that as if you knew all along I think it was it was a
strange-looking car I'm sure it was three wheels I might be wrong
okay then behind the Iron Curtain exactly
okay anything else Nicolai we live your lessons teachers more than you can
imagine oh thank you muhammad al hem re oh
that's very kind of you I've been watching your lessons for three years
thank you very much as lovely so yes the the Trabant I do
i-i've heard of it yes but i-i've never seen I couldn't imagine what it looked
like or what it looks like I don't know I don't Aska says are you far away from
Lancaster yes we are yes we are a very long way from Lancaster and I would say
three or four hours drive at least yes a long way couple hundred miles probably
yes no it's about 200 miles away today so we are we are over towards Wales if
you know where Wales is in the UK you will know where we are we are not far
away from Wales pedro's asking if Julie's going to send us a video oh okay
nice Julie G Pedro's pret Pedro is asking will you send a video in the next
class oh okay then sue Kat says I retracted my message it
was bad writing oh I see that's okay then though you were swearing at us
don't worry about that so we have to say córdoba córdoba accent
the the the first syllable oh but but quois like cone so its co-kura Cordoba
no I think she's saying you you accent it like in cone oh I see yeah I think so
yes córdoba córdoba dope could alert all
where we want to hear it we want to hear it said if you want to hear Supercat
saying it I'm sure all of the things we've done so far have sounded nothing
like the way it's supposed to be pronounced the Trabant was made of
cardboard was it probably very fashionable would these were fashionable
cars rather 2cv it was a fashionable car the beetle was a fashionable car I don't
remember the Trabant yes I don't think it was really sold in this country oh I
think you just said it was fashionable well well it was it was talked about a
lot sort of a car that old people with alternative views would buy alternative
you yeah not mainstream people do you do you mean hippies yes I think so but
certainly the 2cv hippies brought 2cv I got the feeling you were avoiding that
word well I had a friend in cotton in college okay and she was a bit of a
hippie so I mean I was as well we didn't follow traditional ways of thinking so
she had a beetle Volkswagen Beetle nearly poisoned her to death actually
because there bizarrely enough the heating in in Volkswagen Beetles used to
runt used to come off the exhaust pipe can you believe it sounds sensible if
you've got a hole in your exhaust pipe yeah car filled with exhaust fumes they
stopped that at some boring find that let's let's slow down a bit because
we're running out of time yes I'm just about to say something
vadym says what is your accent mr. Duncan it's English I'm English we're in
England it whereabouts well probably England English it's English they know
it's English I don't mean well it's staff Audion isn't it well yes yes but
it's yesterday yes but it's it's just English that's what I'm think they want
to know if it's British or American you're saying that's what I think that
people would know whether they know you'll be surprised you will be
surprised I still get lots of messages from people
saying mr. Duncan are you American or British
so yes it's never assume anything and they never assume anything when it comes
to teaching so we have oh I see wouldn't it be great
to create an online community on whatsapp well lots of people have done
that in the past but they they normally disappear after time so lots of people
are enthusiastic at first and then slowly they fade away that's it run sack
thank you yes British accent so very well thank
you Javed now Steve just mentioned that he
likes alternative things I'm going to show you something now which is pretty
disturbing disturbing just to show you how alternative Steve is could you tell
us something about this photograph Steve and that photograph that even a little
okay that's not me that's not me mr. Duncan that's not me at all here is a
photograph of mr. Steve dressed as a lady I was asked to do it it was a party
we were going to a party and I was it was a party where the men were supposed
to dress up as women and I did it under great protest
it was incredibly it was incredible actually was very enjoyable mr. Duncan
don't I look absolutely beautiful oh I look beautiful mr. Duncan so there there
is this is actually mr. Steve way back in the early 1990s dressed as a woman
now we did promise this a couple of weeks ago we did say a couple of weeks
ago that we were going to show mr. Steve as a lady so there is mr. Steve as a
woman and I must admit you do look quite you look really convincing oh it's such
beauty so there is Steve let's just see how close we can get before the camera
breaks oh dear God I still can't believe that's you you know we went to this
party didn't we yes you keep saying that and I actually drove there like that
Steve drove his car and we got stopped by the police dressed like that so I
have a only we might be losing lots of viewers
now yes lots of people are clicking away you
wanna have a look at another one here's another one this is one of Steve looking
very smart so we just saw Steve there Steve that honestly I'm not joking that
is actually mr. Steven yeah jokey I lucky I haven't got barely changed into
then mr. Duncan so you can see that there is a slight let's just do a
comparison there so we have Steve dressed very smartly and also as a woman
how old was I in that picture I must admit I think I was digital in my mid to
late twenties when I've got that dinner jacket on there yes it was actually not
long after I think it's after we met you know I think you could picture that was
not long after we met he was going to one of your conferences and you were
wearing your dinner jacket so there so that is Steve I think I got some hair
left that is Steve in 1989 behind me so they had yes all those years ago
yes there you go which you prefer me in the dress or me in the dinner jacket so
we were talking about fashion and and there you saw two very different types
of fashion you saw mr. Steve dressed in his lovely dinner jacket and also mr.
Steve dressed as a lady I'm very versatile you know so I've heard
oh I just like wearing different clothes it just makes you feel so different you
know when I would you know I did it once at work so work we had a work it
certainly makes you feel different when you're dressed as a lady I think I've
mentioned this before we had a work this is a Work Conference and they decided
every cunt we have a conference every year and they would want some theme so
this year we had to dress up in Spanish style I think we've shown pictures of
that Spanish style but one year they said all the men dress as women and all
the women dress as men and so I went dressed as a woman and can you believe
it or nobody has bothered all the other men
were too scared to do it I was the only one and people people actually even
though you're a man they know you're a man
you but you've got a dress on they treat you like you're a woman it's quite
strange very interest so we're people asking you out on dates
yes voters are you being chatted up I was married I think I got married the
next day to somebody that doesn't surprise me one bit so I I think the
live chat will probably be in meltdown maybe not so let's have a look well
let's look at the live chat and then you've got some words to show us a lot
of makeup yes how correct it's a cross dress yes mr. Steve was doing a bit of
cross dressing is that yes that is the correct phrase and I yes that's it and
can I just say that Steve only did it that time at one time oh you did it
twice I've done it twice mr. Steve has only done it twice so there Oh someone's
buying an electric car Olga says that was the best moment of today's live
stream how was it what did you say Steve just go up a bit
or down a bit and on the other way the other way had it up down which is which
back you know yeah stop you don't know the difference between up and down
someone's buying a Tesla next year Oh COO and on he's buying a Tesla well yes
oscy so electric car the old Tesla that's the way it's going Oh Martha says
beautiful thank you yes I still can't quite believe that I showed that picture
maybe next week we could have an embarrassing picture of me I'll never
live it down I'll never live it down if you say to
somebody if you say to somebody I'll never live it down it means you you're
so embarrassed you'll never get over it you know what you you reminded me of
there you reminded me of Dustin Hoffman when he was in that famous move in
Tootsie Tootsie yes or of course mrs. Doubtfire so it's not unusual for people
to dress as women or it's not unusual for men to dress as women Queen of the
desert says burlock who I see I feel like I'm
going to sneeze bless you mr. Duncan bless you we had a
sneeze eat so I had one sneeze and Steve had one sneeze if these old clothes are
covered in dust I think it is I think it's it's your father's dandruff I've
got we know we won't have much time left look at all these yeah okay here we go
then Lois all these I've got today mr. Steve has some great great words and
expressions I wanted to show the Flair's let's have a look quickly at the Flair's
so there they are look they're the Flair's mm-hmm for those who are just
like that flared trousers and if you got wet if you were out in the rain they
were horrendous and of course who can forget platform shoes I never had those
no Kenny now those look like women's shoes but they are actually men's shoes
those they're actually for men right and those those styles that style of shoe
was very popular in the 1970s I don't remember anybody wearing those are out
on the street I used to have a pair of platform shoes did you yes someone
actually gave me a pair and I wore them and they they had this this little piece
of gold it wasn't real gold but they had them on the the very fronts of the shoes
they had this little piece of gold and I loved them and there were platform shoes
very high and I was only about I couldn't have been more than about 10 or
11 and I was wearing these platform shoes I think that that explains a lot
and for your ankles bad for everything not to mention not to mention your what
what not to mention the way people look at you I'm not surprised a lot of these
fashions like those sort of people would anyway than if they were in London a lot
of fashion because people like in the 90 people who grow up in the 1960s
everybody assumed that everybody in the sixties like the Beatles and they were
all they were all sleeping with everybody but in fact it was well the
sixth swinging sixties okay we're not talking about the sixties we're talking
about the seven I never I'm you let me explain my song you keep going
completely off the subject I'm not what at the point I'm trying to
make if you listen mr. Duncan okay is that often fashion is something that is
just centered around London and nobody else
elsewhere around Britain takes much notice of it no that's the point I was
trying to make okay they rudely interrupted but that but that was more
common in us in the 60s I think but in the 70s lots of people we were getting
quite quite groovy with their fashion including me do you want to see
something a picture taken of me now so we had an embarrassing photograph we had
an embarrassing photograph of Steve so here here now just to make things equal
here is a very embarrassing photograph of me Oh mr. Duncan in fact there are
two photographs so that's me that's you how old were you there you're like a
girl I was about eighteen eighteen eighteen when that was taken so that's
me way back in the early 1980s and I was
dressing up as my favorite pop star called Adam Ant so there you go so that
so we've we've had mr. Steve's embarrassing photograph and there you
can see my embarrassing photograph when I dressed up as my favorite pop star so
let's get right with that now let's get these words going right okay then we
might not have time for all of them but we will try our best later than mr.
Duncan right the first one suited and booted okay suited and booted what does
that mean that means that you're dressing up in your finest clothes
because you're all formally dressed you're wearing your best clothes because
you go into an important event or an important function or it means to get
ready for something that big and important to dress up in your best
clothes everyone was suited and booted for the big gala event so if you go into
a wedding a conference suited and booted it just means you're dressed in your
smartness and clothes a bit like I am today
you could say I'm suited and booted yes so mr. Steve looks small
he looks like he will go out and impress many people he is suited booted and
unmuted booted so someone might say that too they might say or you might say oh
I've got to get ready to go to the party I'm gonna get suited and booted later it
just means you're gonna get really dressed up here's another one a similar
phrase get all dolled up get all dolled up that's usually applied to women women
get all dolled up usually men don't usually get dolled up well sometimes
they do sometimes they do like I did in that picture is mr. Steve at least twice
in his life has got dolled up with makeup it just means it just means to
dress up in fashionable clothes and put all your makeup on yeah a bit like a
doll to look like a doll in other words it's very attractive and beautiful so
you could say women like to get all dolled up on a Friday night and go out
clubbing if I'm not mistaken it comes from the the nineteen I want to say
1920s 1930s when the the dolly birds you would get dolly bird yes
doh or maybe later than that so the phrase dolly would often refer to a very
gorgeous woman and maybe a woman that had taken a lot of time to make herself
look beautiful exactly it's it's probably not no it's
it's sort of a negative sort of sort of negative II sort of because it sort of
implies that we're in a getting dressed up to be to make themselves attractive
you know and want to pick up a man it's sort of used in that way isn't it oh
just get all dolled up just to get just to get all spruced up makeup on show off
your assets yes when you're going yeah but it's normally relating to women
maybe making themselves look attractive another wife another one quickly all the
rage all the rage mr. Duncan what's up what's up this button do clothes because
something if something is all the rage it means it's very popular
it's in fashion okay in fashion it's popular it's the height of fashion but
it's employed also implies that it won't last my parents love the Beatles they
were all the rage in the sixties flared trousers I used to have flared trousers
they were all the rage in the 70s I'm having this wonderful image of your
mother screaming at the Beatles well that's what I mean she didn't you never
did oh okay it comes from all the rage it comes from
the word rabies meaning madness going a bit mad rage because when people got
rabies they they go a bit mad so that all the rage is something that
everyone's very excited about it so yes flared trousers in the seventies
were all the rage beards men wearing beards in the in the UK now men wearing
beards is all the rage yes would you like everyone would you would you like a
beard now Steve yes I would let's put some beards on because apparently the
most the most fashionable way to look now is to have a beard so let's put some
beards on ha on our faces shall we okay let's see we can do it to do have you
ever grown a beard mr. Duncan I have had a beard in the past so there is my beard
isn't that lovely oh that's my beard and here is mr. Steve's beard so now we have
beards does just stay still Steve I'm moving you don't you don't move okay all
right stay very still so there we go so that's what we look like if we had
beards very sophisticated if I grow a beard there would be gray mr. Duncan
that's the that's the sad thing it's very difficult to keep it central why is
my why is my sideburn going up as face bizarre because you may keep moving
there we go would you like it bigger so there we get
are you enjoying this so I have a beard I think I look quite good with a beard
now mr. Miller I I quite like that yeah look at that
if you stand a bit further back Steve because you're going forward you make
yourself Lord you can't do this I can't believe I keep having to explain these
things so there it's very difficult so can I just say I think I look quite sexy
with a beard oh yeah as well that's quite good that's
that's not too bad there we go I've got it now I've got it now mr. Duncan that's
it great what do you think should I grow a beard yes I think you should grow a
beard it'll climb I drew one once a rose in my twenties and I've got lots of
action I can tell you lots of action a lots of action and what unfortunately is
from sheep so they're back to the words they haven't got long mr. Duncan I've
got lady to the oh we're running out of time so bye-bye to the beards another
one Steve okay write some things that right has been has been good someone who
was once very popular but they're not anymore but they're still around oh that
might be me so somebody who was very popular once and it could be doesn't
have to be a pop star or an actor somebody who's got old and they're a bit
of a joke and you can describe them as a has-been they were something one at one
time but they're not anymore but for some reason they're still around
and annoying everybody mr. Duncan is a bit of a has-been but it can be somebody
at work somebody who was very successful at work but some other they've hung on
and they're not doing much anymore and you just describe them as a bit of a
has-been so it's not a very nice phrase actually never want to be described as a
has-been maybe something that's unfashionable something that yes yes so
it's fallen from fashion it's no longer fashionable another one do you wash your
dirty linen in public wash your dirty linen in public okay obviously if you
were to wash your underpants and dirty clothes for everybody to see that would
that would be a bit distasteful and not very not very nice so what that phrase
means is that you you talk about all your personal problems affairs
all sorts of things that you normally would want to keep to yourself and
within the family you talk about them all in public and of course this it's a
bit of an old-fashioned phrase because these days people particularly
celebrities like to talk about all their problems out in public so celebrities
are always washing their dirty linen in public telling everybody about what's
going on in their private life because they do it because it it gets them more
popular hmm and of course the most famous celebrity that did this was I
think it was Princess Diana yes who because normally you would use a phrase
like my my parents taught me to never to wash my dirty linen in public and always
keep everything within the family and of course Diana Princess Diana famously
went on television and told everybody about that that her husband was having
an affair with another woman and wrote a book about it and that was the ultimate
probably example of washing a dirty linen in public there was a famous
interview with Martin Bashir many years ago where she talked about everything so
if you wash your dirty linen in public you reveal secrets so yes sometimes a
person can wash somebody else's dirty linen as well they can reveal secrets
about another person it's normally seen you it's totally seen as a bit
distasteful yeah because it's going to embarrass somebody so that's why should
you dirty linen in public good we do a bit of that really don't we on this
livestream thing often that's all we do that's all we do we're often talking
about our private lives it's reaching it we talk about our stinky feet we talk
about what we eat we talk about our poops and our pee pees and we talk about
what else we talk about it's very private and personal we can talk about
our affairs next week yes our numerous affairs over the years I don't think we
have enough time we are doing anyone's interested wolf in sheep's clothing a
wolf in sheep's clothing ah that's someone who appears
to be nice but underneath they're actually not very nice at all so they
seem to be like a sheep or gentle and kind but in fact they'll they'll bite
your head off given the chance don't trust bill at work he's a wolf in
sheep's clothing and will stab you in the back yes
she says nice things to your face and then talks behind your back she's a wolf
in sheep's clothing someone once described me as a wolf in
sheep's clothing did they many years ago because when I
was young you might not believe this Steve but I was quite attractive when I
was young not anymore he's seen the picture and I would turn many heads I
used to turn lots of heads when I was young it's true
and someone once described me as a wolf in sheep's clothing they said you appear
all lovely on the outside but really you're quite devious underneath and I
couldn't believe it I thought how insulting is that terrible might have a
point though yeah so somebody that seems to be nice on the outside but in fact is
ruthless and nasty on the it sometimes people pretend down they're all nice to
your face but then in fact they're talking behind your back and they're not
being very nice at all here's another one dress to the nines or dress to the
teeth dress to the nines it just means that you're literally dressed all the
way up as in your best smartest clothes you're dressed to the nines
all right good you're dressed to the nines are you after a wedding you
sometimes say it like that to somebody don't you yeah so you say to somebody
who's very smartly dressed and you don't expect them to be oh you're dressed to
the nines where are you off to a wedding and you sir might say no I'm just after
I'm just this is how I always dress yeah jester they're not I don't know where
that comes from dress to the teeth you can explain because that means you're
dressed all the way up to here hmm in posh clothes I think it just
describes the fact that you're wearing lots and lots of clothing to look very
impressive all the guests were dressed to the nines it's a bit like suited and
booted but suited and booted is a more modern
phrase okay I hand me down hand me down Oh hand me down if if if you wear
hand-me-downs it means you're wearing clothes from other people of worn
usually your older brothers or sisters and they grow out of them and your
parents give them to you a hand-me-down something that is normally from somebody
else in your family and they've grown out of it and they give it to you did
you ever wear hand-me-downs mr. Dan all the time my family a lot of people think
I grew up in a wealthy family but I didn't are my family was pretty poor to
be honest and I didn't have always have new clothes quite often we would have
clothes that were given to us by other people or we were buy second-hand
clothes soaked clothes that were owned by someone else but a hand-me-down is
usually within the family that's it so a hand-me-down is something brother so
maybe a hat or a scarf or maybe a pair of trousers so yes but but yes quite
well I didn't wear me handed down I didn't wear my sister's clothes it looks
like it from that picture we just saw earlier with cap in hand or with with a
hat in hand if you do something if you do something with cap in hand it means
that you do it apologetically or meekly you've done something wrong and you have
to admit it and you go cap in hand to somebody he went home to apologize to
his wife with cap in hand means you've made oh you made it you've made a big
mistake so it's best to good best to go to your boss cap in hand and admit what
you've done so if you go cap in hand you literally just because if you take your
cap off it's a sign of sort of you you're sort of giving in a sign of sort
of it's actually a sign of humility yes a sign of humility when you take your
hat off a sign of humility go into a church you take your hat off or funeral
a funeral meekly people if you keep your hat on it's you you're sort of you've
got a bit of strength if you take your hat off then that's a sort of not a sign
of weakness but a sign yes of humility yes you're being a bitch
elation humble humble man so you going to admit yes I'm sorry I was wrong you
take your hat off hmm so it's a bit of an old-fashioned phrase another one you
could use is to go back with your tail between your legs what's that got to do
with fashion mister don't get nothing nothing it's nothing but it's similar
meaning it is it is yes right next one take your hat off take your hat a lot of
these a hat related if you take your hat off to somebody you you accept publicly
that someone has done better than you in something I take my hat off to you mr.
Duncan you've put on a wonderful show today oh thank you so you might not
think that they could do that you might be talking you might think somebody
can't do something but then they do it and you say quite humbly I take my hat
off to you you've done very well you've beaten me in the sales towers I didn't
think you could I take my hat off to you admit that somebody has done something
better than you you are showing how impressed you are by something yes and
you're humbly admitting that to them to roll up one sleeves if you roll up your
sleeves if you say you get means you're getting ready to do something tough or
difficult task obviously if you wait doesn't usually mean something if you
were going to do some digging in the garden he would roll your sleeves up so
they wouldn't get dirty but we don't we use this phrase really - in other ways
so Sally rolled up her sleeves and began working on her lesson plans so it just
means that you're getting down to a difficult or a task something that needs
doing we're going to have to roll our sleeves up mr. Duncan if we are going to
get this show ready for two o'clock on a Sunday yes means we've really got to get
down to the work little timely we've got to get going we've got to do it we've
got to start now we've got a roll our sleeves up and start working just as if
you were going to do something Manuel know you would you would roll your
sleeves up alright just it just means you're gonna get down
heavy work put your thinking cap on well we've got a cap on a thinking cap
it means when you want to somebody says to you you say I want to do something
and you don't know what to do somebody might say well you'll have to go and put
your thinking cap on it just means you'll have to go away and think about
what you want to do it's a strange expression I don't know
where it comes from put on your thinking cap it means think about something and
come up with a plan there are actually a lot of words to do with hats and cap
there are there are it's quite amazing so you might say oh I don't know what I
might say to you no you might say to me I don't know next Sunday I haven't got a
clue but what we're going to do what's the theme for next Sunday's a live
lesson I might say well you'll have to go and put your thinking cap on mister
didn't I need to consider because I don't think think about something I need
to put my thinking cap it's almost like you've got it you've got a cap and that
all the ideas are in here you've got to put it on and think about what you're
going to do wear your heart on your sleeve sleeve you see that's clothing
wear your heart on your sleeve that's somebody who who just displays all their
emotions publicly it's like they don't keep any feelings in you know exactly
what they think all the time bill wears his heart on his sleeve
bill bill weighs his heart on his sleeve you always know just what he's thinking
so it it might be somebody who tells you exactly what he thinks of you or he's
very emotional oh I'm in love with Sally you know it doesn't doesn't hold
anything in I always tells you know we'll always know exactly what they're
feeling they usually emotional people a lot of people say this about you they
would say Steve he wears his heart on his sleeve yes you know they do so if we
just met have you got an ace up your sleeve mr. Duncan an ace up your sleeve
that means you've got some secret little plan secret little plan that you can use
in difficult situations like almost like a secret weapon
and ace up your sleeve so if you were doing some difficult negotiations with a
company and you weren't getting anywhere and then you've got this secret little
you've just kept it's like keeping something in your back pocket you keep
keeping something back but you're only going to use it if it's absolutely
necessary in the negotiations the rival company played their ace card and
offered extra incentive yes so maybe the race card or had an ace up
listen that's it so to have an ace up your sleeve
means also it can mean that you are may be cheating slightly as well well in
cards a purse can hide the most valuable card and then suddenly produce it it
just made it while it refers to card games to the ACE is it is is probably
the one that you could always win if you've got the ace card so it just means
that you've got a secret little plan there hmm if all else fails you know
you've always got something you can pull out out of the bag that's another way
it's something to are you gonna pull something out of the bag you got an ace
up your sleeve you've got some little plan hidden away that could help you in
the negotiations with a company and of course you can have just something up
your sleeve something that you haven't revealed yet off the cuff off the cuff
well that's a cuff cuff is the is that is that part of a shirt and in in in
days gone by people were making speeches and they wanted to make last-minute
changes or thought or something at the last minute they would write it on their
sleeve or on their cuff and that would help them remember something in a speech
so if you do something off the cuff it means you do something spontaneous
unguarded unprepared and unprepared comment or speech say something without
thinking about it so often an off-the-cuff remark can get
you into trouble hmm because you hadn't planned to say it it
just comes out now I'm always coming out with off-the-cuff remarks to wonder live
Steve has a habit of saying things off-the-cuff things having to trouble
things that are spontaneous so so if you say something spontaneously you say it
off-the-cuff without any preparation you can just make an off-the-cuff speech but
don't get yourself into trouble but usually an off-the-cuff remark is
something where you go I mean Donald Trump for example is always is known for
his off-the-cuff remarks and tweets where he just whatever he planned to say
he doesn't say it and he says something and it usually upsets other people
although in his case he probably is planning the off-the-cuff remarks there
we go he has a habit of making sarcastic
off-the-cuff remarks which often upset people
tighten one's belt if you tighten your belt it means that you've got you've got
to cut down on your spending you're a bit short of money
you've got to tighten your belt we're going to have to tighten our belts this
Christmas as I'm not going to get any bonus this year I'm going to have to
tighten my belt until I've got this loan paid off in the car so you're a bit
short of money you've got to cut down on what you normally do cut down on your
spending you have to Kaizen your belt you have to control how much money you
spend so you need to tighten your belt if you loosen your belt it means you
you've got a bit more freedom to spend a bit more spending money a similar one
get along on a shoestring ah good one that's a long a thank you mr. Duncan get
along on a shoestring that means you you you've got to get by with very little
money a small amount of money so small that you could only buy a shoestring
with it hmm your laces in your shoes so the implication is you you really
haven't got much money at all we've got to get along on a shoestring so you've
got very little money at I think it might have science to do with
the fact that people who had little money would just tie what they had with
a shoestring and then carry it could be could be by the way talking of
shoestrings here it our little studio in Much
Wenlock we do try our best to keep all of this going week after week but of
course we do also rely on your donations as well so can I say a big thank you to
those who have made donations on the patreon site and of course through
PayPal as well you can make donations also through PayPal in fact a lot of
people prefer to do that Steve be curse it's safer and more secure so if you
would like to make a donation you are more than welcome to do so and you can
catch us here every Sunday at 2 p.m. UK time we will we will be here every week
and of course into 2019 there is the address now going across and you can
make a donation to that address thank you very much for all of your help by
the way and you've said to me as well it's sometimes better to make a donation
through PayPal yes because then you get all of it yes yes ok then ok fine
hint hint nudge notes no I'm feeling I'm feeling thirsty
all of a sudden yeah do you have some old words I do yes and they will have a
look at the live chat hit below the belt hit below the belt
this phrase probably comes from a boxing rule boxers in a ring the rule is you
never hit a man below the belt or a woman for that matter because if you do
you're hitting them in their private parts and that's very uncomfortable and
seen as very unfair so in boxing you never hit anyone below the belt but in
this the way we're using it here it means you're not it's an unfair tactic
to attack someone unjustly or unfairly and it's something against the rules
you're doing something against the rules as if you were punching somebody in the
private bath you might make a cruel comment about Maggie cruel comment about
how could you say that how could you say that about me why did you have to hit me
below the belt that's it yes so yes you might be having an argument with
somebody and then they suddenly they suddenly come out with something that
really makes you feel bad oh well don't you remember when you when
you when you slept with such and such as wife Oh such yeah that's a strange name
for a person such and such John got the job over bill by telling the boss about
Jon's drinking habit alright so he sneakily went off and he said to me well
you know I don't think you should give the job to citizens and then bill finds
out about it says all thanks for hitting me below that that that would be hitting
below the belt doing something that's a bit unfair yes actually it's funny that
on the live chat we have Farrah who says I think it means insulting or
doing something inappropriate about someone yes so if you hit someone below
the belt that's a great expression yes that's right something unfair that the
live chat is it you can do it but that you know you're resorting to bad tact
okay we've got three minutes wait there I'm just showing the live
chat rest for a moment I know you get very excited so Pedro Belmont has made a
brilliant suggestion oh let's make videos about our streets
so maybe the area in which you live or around about the area so maybe not your
house so you don't have to identify your house or your address but maybe you
could show around the area where you live in perhaps we could show some of
those videos next week exactly a good idea so if you want to send a video
Thank You Pedro for that that's a great great suggestion and you can send it to
my email address the details are below this video like email address yes Gabi
cap in hand it's humble it means you're humble
humble you're admitting to something you're doing something in a humble way
and Rosa spontaneous yes is off the cuff it's something spontaneous but usually
quite often it said it might get you into trouble because you haven't really
had a chance to think about it beforehand unplanned so yes I think
that's a good idea so maybe go outside do a very short video just show maybe
what what goes on in your street or what goes on around the area where you live
so yes do that so Pedro Julie Belarusian maybe Rosa
Rin sac send something in why not and show us that the location show us your
surroundings since ook at the blue garden yes su Katz
garden is amazing anymore mr. dink we will do I think we will squeeze two more
okay where is that the trousers or where's the panel a person who wears the
trousers trousers or wears the pants now pants trousers are what we say in the UK
pants they usually call that pants trousers pants in the u.s. so we just
mean we just mean trousers or pants so the same thing what hang on what
continuous so it means who is the real boss in a household and it's in a
domestic situation and it's usually referring to the wife being the real
boss in the household so a wife who orders her husband about and even though
he's the one that goes out to work and earns the money can often be described
as the person wearing the trousers so if you see somebody whose wife is maybe you
can tell who's really in charge as that relationship so it orders her husband
about you can see who wears the trousers in that house who is the boss who means
yes who get to who does everything everything done that she wants usually
refers to a woman in a relationship where you would normally expect the man
to be in charge maybe not these days but yes make so much but the person who
wears the trousers the one that's in charge who's really in charge yes but it
doesn't necessarily mean a woman because there are two of our neighbors and they
always say that that in our situation that I wear the trousers isn't that
strange so I'm in charge people think I'm the dominant person in the
relationship isn't that strange it's not true
it isn't he's the boss he he wears the trousers
well sometimes sometimes he wears he wears a dress yes yeah that off that
phrase is usually used talking about people you can see who wears the
trousers in that house yes the one who's really in charge okay one more very
quickly right what should we do here we go this is something that we rarely do
burn a hole in your pocket if you burn a hole in your pocket that means that you
spend a lot of money hmm you probably more than you should do you
spend more money quickly without really thinking about it yes so literally so
you could say Martha as soon as she gets paid she
spends all her money and burns a hole in her pocket so you know as I understand
it I always thought it was the other way around
so if if the money burns a hole in your pocket it means you can't wait yeah to
go out and spend it means that as well so you have the money but you can't wait
to spend it it's like the money is burning a hole in your pocket you want
to get out of your pocket and into a cash till yes and and you're gonna spend
it all on something so maybe you can go out and enjoy the Black Friday sales we
all know people who who as soon as they get paid go off and spend all their
money because it's bits burning that the wages are burning a hole in their pocket
I think that's it we'll leave it there because we're already two minutes we're
two minutes over though that's it okay we have
B we have to be firm after all I'm wearing the trousers I wear the trousers
on the livestream that's correct that's true yes I'm wearing the boring charge
with the livestream yes okay then so a quick look at the live chat and then we
are going I'm just so somebody just said at the
buggy it's at why Martha I just have just the word that came to came to mind
I just use words people's names and I don't mean anyone on the live chat
normally normally it relates to our neighbors we've got a we've got a
neighbor called mouth we've got a neighbor neighbor called Martha and also
a neighbor who lives nearby called Bill so that's the reason why Steve often
uses those names it's nothing to do with the live chat trust me
have a lovely birthday party Tomic if you're having one so don't forget if you
want to send a video of your local area around about the place you live don't
don't give us your address don't show your house but show the area show the
locations show the surroundings feel free yes and that's it I think we
are completely out of time can you believe it Steve but not out of pocket
I'm trying to get another word in we're out of time but not out of pocket out of
pocket that means money that is owed to you you're out of pocket you all you you
all your friends go out are you going to have a mall Amir out together and you
pay for it up front and they've robbed they've all to give give you a bit of a
bit of the bill and somebody doesn't and you're out of pocket by 10 pounds
because somebody hasn't given it means you're owed some money yeah so it means
you make a loss means you make a loss out-of-pocket expenses so you have to go
and buy your own petrol for work you have to claim the expenses back and in
your out of pocket to get paid back line your own pockets do cam getting them all
aligned around pocket you do realise when it when you gamble like that that
the YouTube subtitles later will not understand anything you're saying line
your own pockets earn money from shady deals and a politician lined his own
pockets with bribes I've got them all in mr. Duncan so you are you are putting
the money into your pocket you're putting lime in your pocket you
are lining your pocket bribes yes okay that's great we're going right thank you steve
Thank You mr. Duncan see you all next
