Auto news on Youtube Nov 21 2018

With all that's going on in today's society, we know you come to Billboard News for

the hard hitting stories shaping the world around us. Today, there is a battle raging

over exactly how we should be saying Blink-182's name.

The controversy all started when 'The Late Late Show's' co-head writer Ian Karmel

started a twitter forum with Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge. "The British call Blink-182

'Blink One Eight Two' and I'm not saying that's WHY they lost the Revolutionary War,

but..." Shots fired! It was only a matter of time before Corden and the rest of Twitter

got wind of this one and weighed in. Corden claims both countries are wrong as the

band should be called Blink One Hundred And Eighty Two. Ed_perch then posted...

"If it's a number it's one hundred and eighty two, if it's figures it's one eight two.

One eighty two just doesn't exist as an entity in the English language, fam."

But then Jared pointed out..."I get that this is a stretch, but when something costs $1.82,

I'd say "one eighty-two", so it's not entirely non existent." Boom! Tell 'em Jared!

Things started getting personal from there as users just started bringing up issues

they have with each other's culture. "The Americans call a game Football where the aim

of the game is to hold the ball in your hands.......right oh," writes Rob.

Stephen then brings up the word aluminum which we typically say "aluminum" and British

say "al-ew-mini-um."

Personally I'm just gonna go with what the band has called themselves and told us their

name was for the past 25 years: Blink "One Eighty Two" but if you want more tweets

head to billboard.com. Until next time - for Billboard News, I'm Kevan Kenney.

The US Will Never Stop Coddling Saudi Arabia, Even As They Murder Journalists And Children - Duration: 7:34.

Saudi Arabia's one of the largest violators of human rights on the planet, but for some

reason, they remain one of our closest allies, even though they have a piggish dictatorship

that kills people on a regular basis for the damnedest things you can imagine.

They are, honestly ... They are truly pigs of the trough to me.

That's how I describe them on a global picture.

They are pigs at the trough, and we won't do anything about it.

This story, there's no surprises here.

The UN comes out and they say, "Look, you shouldn't be killing children.

We shouldn't have the death penalty for 14 year olds.

You shouldn't be able to kill a 15 year old kid because they engaged in witchcraft."

These are some of the things that they have.

This what they execute people for: Sodomy, sorcery, witchcraft.

And the UN comes down and says, "Well, we looked at all this, and you're killing children.

Stop it, okay?"

Have you heard the media ... This came in The Jurist.

This story comes from The Jurist.

This doesn't come from corporate media.

Oh, heck, no.

They wouldn't talk about this, because as we've said too many times, there's too many

defense contractors that like to advertise in corporate media for some reason.

But this, in addition to those things ... The sodomy, sorcery, witchcraft ... That they're

killing children for, they're also getting them to confess to those things by torturing

them.

So these are confessions that aren't even reliable to begin with, and the UN, the best

they can do is come out and say, "Hey, do you think you guys could just maybe not kill

children?"

And this actually came after the journalist Khashoggi was murdered with a bone saw, disappeared.

All they knew was that his fingers were still there, and nothing happened.

Yeah, and they're still our pals.

Yeah.

Okay, now, let's jump to why.

You did a segment ... You've done a couple of segments on why, and I think you really

have it right.

We used to hear the argument, "Well, we have to do this with our Saudi piggish friends

because we have to rely on their oil."

Right?

Well, now that's not really the case.

Now we're producing more oil, even though [inaudible] the environment in the United

States.

We've become an oil exporter, did you know that?

Yeah.

We're actually exporting oil.

So it's not a matter of saying we've got to have these dictator freaks because of their

oil.

It really comes down to weapons, doesn't it?

It does.

All the reports we've seen about Saudi Arabia ... Because let's keep in mind, too, it's

not just children that they convict of witchcraft that they're killing.

They're killing all these children in Yemen, and they're killing them with weapons, bombs,

and missiles that they're buying from the United States.

We have become not just an oil exporter, but the world leader in global arms sales, and

we're selling them to one of the worst countries on the planet.

And Saudi Arabia truly is one of the worst when you look at the records.

We're training their pilots right here in the United States to drive the aircraft that

we build for them, the fighter aircraft.

We're training them right here.

We're telling them all of our secrets right here in the United States.

They go to flight schools just like our American pilots do.

We give them all this information, and it's right in front of us that these people are

the worst kinds of thugs, and now we're keeping this love affair alive not because of oil

but because the arms industry wants to make more money.

And these piggish freaks, the Saudi Arabia family, they're going to buy as much as they

possibly can.

And they've bought enough, they spend enough that it's placated both sides.

It wasn't just George W. Bush with his love affair of them.

Obama tried to protect them from being held liable for supplying the hijackers for 9-11,

and for being a state sponsor of terror.

Trump, right now, is the one protecting them because they're buying so many of our weapons.

It is a Democrat thing, it is a Republican thing, and it's because they all want that

money.

And in the off chance we have to do something in the Middle East, we think we can count

on them as an ally, and we can't even do that.

I don't believe you can count on them as an ally.

No.

I honestly don't believe you can count on them as an ally.

They're going to do whatever serves their purpose.

Listen.

This last mid-term election, you had Democratic candidates and Republican candidates that

were just absolutely beating the bejesus out of Israel.

Okay, now that didn't just happen by mistake.

You have the Saudi Arabians, and we always say, "Well, the Iranians, they're such a threat

to Israel," and we go on and on about how these other countries besides Saudi Arabia

are such a threat to Israel.

But they've done a wonderful job.

Saudi Arabia has done an incredible job with buying the best PR people they can.

I know some of them.

I literally know some of the biggest PR organizations in this country that are working with Saudi

Arabia to try to clear up their trashy mess.

It's every month there's something else that Saudi Arabia has done, and they've been very

successful.

Successful to the point that we're actually seeing it play itself out in politics.

Israel fell under great, great pressure politically this last cycle.

I don't know if you did any stories on that.

I followed it very closely, and it's because Saudi Arabia has more money than ten third

world nations, and they can buy good PR, and that's what's happening in the United States

right now.

Absolutely, and as long as they have that money, as long as they're going to spend that

money over here in the United States, we're going to let them do whatever it is they want

to do, even when it is murdering children in their own country, or murdering children

in Yemen-

Or journalists.

Or journalists, or anyone else they can get their hands on, and we're going to say nothing

because we like the money.

Where is it that we started whitewashing Saudi Arabia?

Where did that begin?

Where did it start?

I know it began with oil, but anybody with any ability of critical thinking can just

read just the surface of what goes on in Saudi Arabia, and you would say, "My God, these

are our best pals?

Really, these are our best pals that we have?"

No, Israel is our best pal, and that's just the truth of the matter.

Israel is our best pal, and now we have these inroads coming in because Israel's treating

the Palestinians wrong.

This is critical mass issue, I think, right now.

Well, I think where it started was they wanted to avoid another oil embargo like in the '70s.

That was an absolute catastrophe, so they said, "Okay, well, let's make nice."

Reagan came in and said, "Well, let's maybe give weapons to some of these folks, too,

to keep them placated, to keep that oil flowing."

We created this monster over there in the Middle East.

Yeah, we did.

We created this.

We did.

And now the monster is the one calling the shots.

Yeah, there's no question that they are calling the shots, and they're calling the shots because

we want our weapons industry to make as much money as they can make, and we're doing it

with these pigs at the trough.

And it's a disgusting story to me.

I wish corporate media would spend more time talking about this.

$200 Million Operation: How Deep State funds Caravan and Chaos in the United States - Duration: 18:15.

Today on Edge of Wonder,

We take you to Disclosure Fest in Washington D.C.,

Where we met with former FBI agent, John DeSouza, aka, the X-man.

He'll share with us how the financial institutes are connected to the cabal,

how the immigrants caravan could very well be a psy-op.

What entities and people may actually be working against the cabal.

And who Q+ really is.

Then after this riveting interview,

Be sure to join Ben and Rob as they share their experiences from the Disclosure Fest,

Including some conversations with some old friends,

And some new ones,

On this episode of Edge of Wonder.

Okay so hey everybody welcome to Edge of Wonder,

we're here with John de Souza at Disclosure Fest,

and we have an opportunity here to ask him a few questions coming off of

Above Majestic which is really exciting,

and John how has the reaction to Above Majestic been since it published.

It's been amazing, it's number one documentary on all streaming services across the board,

number one documentary in the country right now.

And the response has been amazing,

and it has really brought forward to people to a new audience,

a lot of these realities that we discuss all the time,

and it's really opening up a whole new world for a lot of people.

So we're really happy about that.

So one of the biggest questions I have is you're actually in Above Majestic

you talked a lot about finance and the cabal, right.

And I kind of like to hear a little bit more about that.

So the financial institutions are connected to the cabal,

how are they connected to the cabal,

why is this danger

and what what else would you like our audience to know about that.

I want the audience know that whenever they see

like these big anti American activities going on.

Like let's say these mobs that suddenly appear out protesting American institutions or whatever,

or protesting people in general,

unruly, violent mobs,

or you see unruly violent mobs squads of people coming to our border,

all of those activities are financed by your money through the central banks,

because the central banks have all the money,

they are the dynasties that have all the money.

George Soros and all of these dynasties, they have that money,

and they have unlimited funds to finance these mobs that are attacking our borders right now.

Each one of those people, they have to pay them $7,000,

every single person, and that's just the start.

So you're saying basically that people coming over are actually.

it's like a psy-op,

what you're saying right,

like trying to get these people over.

it is, it is like a military invasion pretending to be an organic social activity

where all of these people suddenly decided they don't want to be in their countries,

and now they want to be in America because of economic conditions.

That's all theater, that's all theater.

This is a well financed attack, asymmetrical attack against the United States,

financed by George Soros and all the NGOs that have our money through the central banks,

and this operation, people are estimated conservatively that this whole operation,

this alien invasion against our borders,

had the cost conservatively maybe 200 million dollars,

if you include the buses, they're using luxury buses.

I mean there's these luxury model the buses are like half a million dollars each.

Its enormous costs involved with this,

but it's incredible and people need to know that,

we are all paying for that through the central banks,

that's why the nationalist forces are getting ready to throw off the central banks very soon,

and that's something that's way overdue.

So what would that be like ?

What's working against this system,

the cabal that's been set up for I mean probably now like 150 years.

So talk a little bit more about like the group that's working against this to try to

The groups that are working against this that are…

For instance, the Fed is raising interest rates when there's actually no reason to,

they're doing that as direct attack against Trump and Putin

and all the nationalist forces that are have gotten together

and are working to throw off the cabal,

and so they're doing that in the stock market also,

at a time when that shouldn't be existing,

they're trying to strike back against the nationalist forces,

and of course at the tip of those nationalist forces is Donald Trump.

He is the top guy in that group, but there's many many others,

there's leaders in Austria,

there's leaders in Europe even that are taking over from the globalists.

And these people all working together,

and they are working towards a reset of the central banks to get rid of them,

and that stuff is so complex that we don't even know

what it's going to look like when they do this reset,

but it is coming.

Passover time here

So I have a good question for you actually.

Q+ recently posted about Whitaker thanking sessions for basically all of his work and all of that,

I kind of want you to just drop a little bit about what's going on with that.

Tell us a little bit about it.

There's been a lot of evidence, because of context,

that Q+ is actually Donald J. Trump.

All right,

and you have to just look at the context

and really go deep into it to see what that's all about,

but it really looks like Q+,

which is a separate entity from Q is actually Donald Trump,

and Donald Trump just dropped after sessions resignation and all that,

the theater that he fired Sessions, he did all that.

There was a drop from Q+, it said to Sessions said,

"thank you for your service, we will not forget your sacrifice,"

which is a really weird thing to say to somebody that you just fired supposedly.

And so it really looks like this whole firing of Sessions

and bringing in this provisional Attorney General was all a theater,

and that Sessions has been doing a service somehow by resigning himself,

what do you call that,

recusing himself from the prosecutions at laying low and now being fired in humiliation.

It looks like he's probably going to be brought back later,

maybe as the judge of the military tribunals that are ultimately going to be prosecuting the sons of **** that we all know in the cabal.

I just wrote a post on our blog on edgeofwonder. nyc actually,

just specifically about this, talking about Jeff sessions,

and bringing in Whitaker now.

My understanding Trump wanted the deep state

and the public to like Sessions,

now it's like let's bring in this young guy,

and he has this photo on his Twitter site,

Lifting weights that's like twice my weight,

from my understanding, this is what happened with the protest then,

because it's like you're bringing this younger guy in,

and whose looks like he's just going to go Rambo style,

and then I saw this quote that said this guy hates Hillary more than you do.

It's like wow.

Yeah looks increasingly like this was all an elaborate set up,

and Whitaker is being put in,

specifically because he's not a political appointee,

or even a political figure.

They can't do anything against him.

He's just a temporary appointee and yet the guy is a bulldog.

And it's a possible that he has been brought in to clean house

with the drops of the sealed subpoenas during this entire period,

even connected to the military tribunals,

and that's what it's looks like right now.

Well, actually I think we can end it right now, because John is actually on one of the tables right,

he is get ready to speak in front of everyone,

so we're going to call it here, but we really appreciate your time John,

really love having you around.

Come anytime on the show.

Edge of Wonder is the greatest,

they are the best at what they do, bar none,

Edge of Wonder are the best there is, no one better, thanks so much man.

Guys don't forget to hit like and subscribe,

until next time, we'll see you out on the edge.

That's awesome, thank you.

Disclosure fest was awesome,

we didn't really know what to expect,

but it was really great to see the amount of people that showed up.

And how many people had stories about how they came,

like they just decided the night before to come because they knew they wanted to be there.

The experience of the meditation, the group meditation that everyone did.

I mean it was pretty cold, I was wearing a T shirt meditating because the energy was just…

I felt the energy was just so strong.

There was all kinds of people from the community, like the influencers in the community that all came.

And they were speaking at Disclosure Fest,

and just hearing them speak and learning even more about what's going on with disclosure.

All of that stuff was just pretty awesome.

My highlight actually was really meeting the fans,

but aside from meeting the fans and interacting with everybody,

and just having them come up to us and talk to us.

Just hanging out with like some of the the main people there,

like Laura Eisenhower, Jordan Sather, Corey Goode, we just started talking to them,

and it was just a really amazing experience overall.

There were a couple of highlights for me I think.

One I just found it really interesting interacting with some of the influencers in the community

that I haven't interacted personally with,

like when Corey Goode saw me,

he just came up to me and gave me a big hug,

and it was really nice to see how genuine people were there,

Cuz usually you are on the other side of like a phone call or something

or you're communicating through email,

but this was in person,

you got to talk to them,

you got to joke around with him a little bit,

and also hear personal stories of theirs,

so I think that was definitely one of them.

The other one was,

I was completely blown away at our fans actually.

Last conference we were at was Contact in the Desert right.

we probably had about 7,000 subscribers then,

but now we have like 165,000 something like that,

and I was just shocked to see how many people recognized us,

and how many people were approaching us and they were just really shocked to see us there,

obviously Ben and I aren't really used to that.

So we were like wow,

and that it was pretty amazing yeah.

I think the best thing out of everything that happened was meeting our fans.

Because this is really the first time that we met our fans in person,

so coming here, it was just phenomenal.

We heard a lot of things that day,

and I really enjoyed the panel.

So the panel was when everybody got up there,

and Jordan was asking every single one of the panelists questions,

and everyone kind of got to give their own little 2 cents on what was going on right now,

and hearing where we're all at in the disclosure community,

and what was so interesting about it was that every single one of the speakers right,

there is a thread through each one of them,

even though a lot of them are talking about different things,

what interested me most was that this is how we can understand the truth right,

is when you have multiple people are coming out and telling their story.

But somehow they're all connected in one way or another,

either historically or specific things going on with ETs or disclosure

or the spiritual aspects of these things.

Having them all connect was kind of like validation that this is really something that's going on,

and that more and more people need to wake up and kind of learn more

about the true situation and society actually.

Just hanging out with them was just really really cool,

especially Laura Eisenhower,

it was just an amazing experience like talking to her,

and we're really connecting with these people on a much deeper level.

Just the conversations that we're having,

and the understanding that what's happening with disclosure overall.

A lot of new people are starting to come out and really talking a lot

about what's happening in the disclosure community.

How it's really affecting them,

I think one of the best experiences overall was meeting this little boy named Shawn.

He was 11 year old boy and he just ran up to me and was just like,

oh my gosh,

I've been watching you I've been watching every show of yours,

I'm one of your biggest fans,

and he was this 11 year old boy.

And I was like, do you want a photo with us,

and he's like yeah sure.

So I was like, let me go get Rob.

And Ben comes around the corner from the tent.

He's like Rob Rob come here,

And I'm like ok, what's up.

So I go around the corner, and he's with this little boy,

And the first thing I noticed is that his hand is bright orange.

He had his hands in some Cheetos for like 2 hours.

When I went over there, I just gave him a big handshake,

Got a bunch of Cheetos on my hand and gave him a big hug.

We got to talked to him about all the different stuff that he's been watching,

And we were really shocked to find out that he is just…

It's his favorite TV show.

And Rob was like, do you watch our deep state series?

He's like yeah, I watch everything.

And he doesn't really watch that much other shows,

or if he does, it's not as much as he watches Edge of Wonder,

so it was like really awesome to interact with him and his mom and and his brother.

I've never encountered anything like this before,

it was just so funny, it was great.

And we can't thank our fans enough.

I think our fans... we're here because of our fans.

We have the best fans in the whole world.

I think that with the current state and the truth,

I think next year 2019, we're going to see some really really big things happen.

There's kind of like this cosmic timing that almost happens

where when there's a shift in the overall situation of the world

or of consciousness I should say,

it's almost that some things line up and then people naturally step forward,

whether they're the called to step forward,

whether they have visions that they need to come out,

or just some ideas that they have.

And I think because of this, and more and more people are talking about disclosure,

more and more people in the world are getting into this,

like more media are reporting about UFO,

different phenomenon or whatnot.

people that have been really really hard core and following the media recently

I've seen them react to some of this new information coming out.

people are actually not able to kind of call everything superstition anymore.

And I think that overall globally there's this mass consciousness awakening

where people are starting to think about these things.

Maybe they thought about it here and there,

but now it seems to be more prominent in their thinking.

It's like what is really happening,

is there really a disclosure,

does all these things exist,

and I think more and more people are searching for the truth,

and as people are searching for the truth,

there's like a natural thing where more and more channels, people,

just more and more things are talking about all these different events happening,

and I think that we're seeing this global phenomenon,

where the disclosure is going to be from the people.

I mean you're not just talking about 1,000 people, you're talking about millions of people

who are actually waking up to the truth they have no choice

because it's all getting out there now right.

So this is a gradual thing that's happening,

and then more and more and more people are going to be looking for this kind of truth

and that is why I feel like the Edge of Wonder is so important

so that there is a place that people can come where they can learn about all of this stuff

and have the actual truth

or at least, at the very least ask questions about what that truth is.

It's going to put pressure on governments, on different organizations and all kinds of things

that they'll be forced to start releasing things about disclosure

and I think we're gonna start seeing that happen next year especially.

You know what we've been hearing in history books,

what we've been reading all of our lives,

a lot of these things are just such a small part of the truth,

or the actual events that took place.

Because if we're just robotically listening to what the mainstream media is telling us,

we're not actually doing our jobs,

we really need to take some time and learn more of this.

And that is why Disclosure Fest and the disclosure community is so important

because it's our responsibility to tell those people these things,

And hope that even one person waking up is such a huge deal.

It was just an amazing experience and I can't wait to go to the next event for sure.

Is war between China and the US inevitable? | Graham Allison - Duration: 18:44.

So, let me thank you for the opportunity to talk about

the biggest international story of your professional lifetime,

which is also the most important international challenge

the world will face for as far as the eye can see.

The story, of course, is the rise of China.

Never before have so many people risen so far so fast,

on so many different dimensions.

The challenge is the impact of China's rise --

the discombobulation this will cause the Unites States

and the international order,

of which the US has been the principal architect and guardian.

The past 100 years have been what historians now call an "American Century."

Americans have become accustomed to their place

at the top of every pecking order.

So the very idea of another country

that could be as big and strong as the US -- or bigger --

strikes many Americans as an assault on who they are.

For perspective on what we're now seeing in this rivalry,

it's useful to locate it on the larger map of history.

The past 500 years have seen 16 cases

in which a rising power threatened to displace a ruling power.

Twelve of those ended in war.

So just in November, we'll all pause to mark the 100th anniversary

of the final day of a war that became so encompassing,

that it required historians to create an entirely new category: world war.

So, on the 11th hour of the 11th day

of the 11th month in 1918,

the guns of World War I fell silent,

but 20 million individuals lay dead.

I know that this is a sophisticated audience,

so you know about the rise of China.

I'm going to focus, therefore, on the impact of China's rise,

on the US, on the international order

and on the prospects for war and peace.

But having taught at Harvard over many years,

I've learned that from time to time, it's useful to take a short pause,

just to make sure we're all on the same page.

The way I do this is, I call a time-out,

I give students a pop quiz -- ungraded, of course.

So, let's try this. Time-out, pop quiz.

Question:

forty years ago, 1978, China sets out on its march to the market.

At that point, what percentage of China's one billion citizens

were struggling to survive on less than two dollars a day?

Take a guess -- 25 percent?

Fifty?

Seventy-five?

Ninety.

What do you think?

Ninety.

Nine out of every 10 on less than two dollars a day.

Twenty eighteen, 40 years later.

What about the numbers?

What's your bet?

Take a look.

Fewer than one in 100 today.

And China's president has promised that within the next three years,

those last tens of millions will have been raised up

above that threshold.

So it's a miracle, actually, in our lifetime.

Hard to believe.

But brute facts are even harder to ignore.

A nation that didn't even appear on any of the international league tables

has soared,

to rival -- and in some areas, surpass -- the United States.

Thus, the challenge that will shape our world:

a seemingly unstoppable rising China

accelerating towards an apparently immovable ruling US,

on course for what could be the grandest collision in history.

To help us get our minds around this challenge,

I'm going to introduce you to a great thinker,

I'm going to present a big idea,

and I'm going to pose a most consequential question.

The great thinker is Thucydides.

Now, I know his name is a mouthful,

and some people have trouble pronouncing it.

So, let's do it, one, two, three, together:

Thucydides.

One more time: Thucydides.

So who was Thucydides?

He was the father and founder of history.

He wrote the first-ever history book.

It's titled "The History of the Peloponnesian War,"

about the war in Greece, 2500 years ago.

So if nothing else today, you can tweet your friends,

"I met a great thinker.

And I can even pronounce his name: Thucydides."

So, about this war that destroyed classical Greece,

Thucydides wrote famously:

"It was the rise of Athens and the fear that this instilled in Sparta

that made the war inevitable."

So the rise of one

and the reaction of the other

create a toxic cocktail of pride,

arrogance, paranoia,

that drug them both to war.

Which brings me to the big idea:

Thucydides's Trap.

"Thucydides's Trap" is a term I coined several years ago,

to make vivid Thucydides's insight.

Thucydides's Trap is the dangerous dynamic that occurs

when a rising power threatens to displace a ruling power,

like Athens --

or Germany 100 years ago, or China today --

and their impact on Sparta,

or Great Britain 100 years ago, or the US today.

As Henry Kissinger has said,

once you get this idea, this concept of Thucydides's Trap in your head,

it will provide a lens

for helping you look through the news and noise of the day

to understand what's actually going on.

So, to the most consequential question about our world today:

Are we going to follow in the footsteps of history?

Or can we, through a combination of imagination and common sense

and courage

find a way to manage this rivalry

without a war nobody wants,

and everybody knows would be catastrophic?

Give me five minutes to unpack this,

and later this afternoon, when the next news story pops up for you

about China doing this, or the US reacting like that,

you will be able to have a better understanding of what's going on

and even to explain it to your friends.

So as we saw with this flipping the pyramid of poverty,

China has actually soared.

It's meteoric.

Former Czech president, Vaclav Havel, I think, put it best.

He said, "All this has happened so fast, we haven't yet had time to be astonished."

(Laughter)

To remind myself how astonished I should be,

I occasionally look out the window in my office in Cambridge

at this bridge, which goes across the Charles River,

between the Kennedy School and Harvard Business School.

In 2012, the State of Massachusetts said they were going to renovate this bridge,

and it would take two years.

In 2014, they said it wasn't finished.

In 2015, they said it would take one more year.

In 2016, they said it's not finished,

we're not going to tell you when it's going to be finished.

Finally, last year, it was finished -- three times over budget.

Now, compare this to a similar bridge that I drove across last month in Beijing.

It's called the Sanyuan Bridge.

In 2015, the Chinese decided they wanted to renovate that bridge.

It actually has twice as many lanes of traffic.

How long did it take for them to complete the project?

Twenty fifteen, what do you bet?

Take a guess -- OK, three --

Take a look.

(Laughter)

The answer is 43 hours.

(Audience: Wow!)

(Laughter)

Graham Allison: Now, of course, that couldn't happen in New York.

(Laughter)

Behind this speed in execution is a purpose-driven leader

and a government that works.

The most ambitious and most competent leader

on the international stage today is Chinese President Xi Jinping.

And he's made no secret about what he wants.

As he said when he became president six years ago,

his goal is to make China great again --

(Laughter)

a banner he raised long before Donald Trump picked up a version of this.

To that end, Xi Jinping has announced specific targets for specific dates:

2025, 2035, 2049.

By 2025, China means to be the dominant power

in the major market in 10 leading technologies,

including driverless cars, robots,

artificial intelligence, quantum computing.

By 2035, China means to be the innovation leader

across all the advanced technologies.

And by 2049, which is the 100th anniversary

of the founding of the People's Republic,

China means to be unambiguously number one,

including, [says] Xi Jinping, an army that he calls "Fight and Win."

So these are audacious goals, but as you can see,

China is already well on its way

to these objectives.

And we should remember how fast our world is changing.

Thirty years ago,

the World Wide Web had not yet even been invented.

Who will feel the impact of this rise of China most directly?

Obviously, the current number one.

As China gets bigger and stronger and richer,

technologically more advanced,

it will inevitably bump up against American positions and prerogatives.

Now, for red-blooded Americans --

and especially for red-necked Americans like me; I'm from North Carolina --

there's something wrong with this picture.

The USA means number one, that's who we are.

But again, to repeat: brute facts are hard to ignore.

Four years ago, Senator John McCain asked me to testify about this

to his Senate Armed Services Committee.

And I made for them a chart that you can see,

that said, compare the US and China

to kids on opposite ends of a seesaw on a playground,

each represented by the size of their economy.

As late as 2004, China was just half our size.

By 2014, its GDP was equal to ours.

And on the current trajectory, by 2024, it will be half again larger.

The consequences of this tectonic change will be felt everywhere.

For example, in the current trade conflict,

China is already the number one trading partner

of all the major Asian countries.

Which brings us back to our Greek historian.

Harvard's "Thucydides's Trap Case File" has reviewed the last 500 years of history

and found 16 cases in which a rising power

threatened to displace a ruling power.

Twelve of these ended in war.

And the tragedy of this is that in very few of these

did either of the protagonists want a war;

few of these wars were initiated by either the rising power

or the ruling power.

So how does this work?

What happens is, a third party's provocation

forces one or the other to react,

and that sets in motion a spiral,

which drags the two somewhere they don't want to go.

If that seems crazy, it is.

But it's life.

Remember World War I.

The provocation in that case

was the assassination of a second-level figure,

Archduke Franz Ferdinand,

which then led the Austro-Hungarian emperor

to issue an ultimatum to Serbia,

they dragged in the various allies,

within two months, all of Europe was at war.

So imagine if Thucydides were watching planet Earth today.

What would he say?

Could he find a more appropriate leading man for the ruling power

than Donald J Trump?

(Laughter)

Or a more apt lead for the rising power than Xi Jinping?

And he would scratch his head

and certainly say he couldn't think of more colorful provocateur

than North Korea's Kim Jong-un.

Each seems determined to play his assigned part

and is right on script.

So finally, we conclude again with the most consequential question,

the question that will have the gravest consequences

for the rest of our lives:

Are Americans and Chinese going to let the forces of history drive us to a war

that would be catastrophic for both?

Or can we summon the imagination and courage

to find a way to survive together,

to share the leadership in the 21st century,

or, as Xi Jinping [said], to create a new form of great power relations?

That's the issue I've been pursuing passionately

for the last two years.

I've had the opportunity to talk and, indeed, to listen

to leaders of all the relevant governments --

Beijing, Washington, Seoul, Tokyo --

and to thought leaders across the spectrum of both the arts and business.

I wish I had more to report.

The good news is that leaders are increasingly aware

of this Thucydidean dynamic

and the dangers that it poses.

The bad news is that nobody has a feasible plan

for escaping history as usual.

So it's clear to me that we need some ideas

outside the box of conventional state graph --

indeed, from another page or another space --

which is what brings me to TED today

and which brings me to a request.

This audience includes many of the most creative minds on the planet,

who get up in the morning and think

not only about how to manage the world we have,

but how to create worlds that should be.

So I'm hopeful that as this sinks in and as you reflect on it,

some of you are going to have some bold ideas, actually some wild ideas,

that when we find, will make a difference in this space.

And just to remind you if you do,

this won't be the first time.

Let me remind you of what happened right after World War II.

A remarkable group of Americans and Europeans and others,

not just from government, but from the world of culture and business,

engaged in a collective surge of imagination.

And what they imagined and what they created

was a new international order,

the order that's allowed you and me to live our lives, all of our lives,

without great power war

and with more prosperity than was ever seen before on the planet.

So, a remarkable story.

Interestingly, every pillar of this project that produced these results,

when first proposed,

was rejected by the foreign policy establishment

as naive or unrealistic.

My favorite is the Marshall Plan.

After World War II, Americans felt exhausted.

They had demobilized 10 million troops,

they were focused on an urgent domestic agenda.

But as people began to appreciate how devastated Europe was

and how aggressive Soviet communism was,

Americans eventually decided to tax themselves

a percent and a half of GDP every year for four years

and send that money to Europe to help reconstruct these countries,

including Germany and Italy,

whose troops had just been killing Americans.

Amazing.

This also created the United Nations.

Amazing.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The World Bank.

NATO.

All of these elements of an order for peace and prosperity.

So, in a word, what we need to do is do it again.

And I think now we need a surge of imagination, creativity,

informed by history,

for, as the philosopher Santayana reminded us,

in the end, only those who refuse to study history

are condemned to repeat it.

Thank you.
