By Kenneth Dickerman Kenneth Dickerman Photo editor Email Bio Photo Editor November 19 at 6:00 AM South Pacific Restaurant, Chicago, 1966 (Mario Carnicelli) Schoolboy, New York, 1966 (Mario Carnicelli) In 2010, Mario Carnicelli contacted photography curator Barbel Reinhard and asked if she would take a look at some of his old negatives

At the time, Carnicelli had closed the photography store he had operated in Florence since the 1970s

But Carnicelli turned out to be more than just a photography store owner. In fact, before opening his store, Carnicelli had had an entirely different life — as a photographer

As Reinhard said in an introduction to "American Voyage" (Reel Art Press, 2018): "If Mario Carnicelli hadn't closed his photography store in 2010 and asked me to have a look at his old negatives I would never have known, like many of us, that he was a photographer

In his cellar lay a hidden treasure, a foreign and fascinating world in black and white but also in exquisite color images, hundreds of stories and microstories of the sixties and seventies mostly set in Italy, but also in America

Once we started curating and scanning the archive of carefully stored medium format and 35mm negatives, the nostalgic vintage flavour made way for the discovery of an astonishing modern attitude, beauty without rhetoric, ordinary gestures that become iconic, centered on his interest in exploring the human condition of individuals in different societies

His archive comprises a cohesive body of documentary work of thousands of images, that after fifty years finally gets the attention it deserves

" The book goes on to detail how this other life (and, in particular, how his book on American life in the 1960s came about) as a photographer began for Carnicelli

In 1966, he was a young documentary photographer living in Tuscany. He had taken some photos of demonstrations in his hometown and submitted one to a photography competition sponsored by Popular Photography magazine, as well as a film company and two camera manufacturers, Mamiya and Pentax

Carnicelli's image won first place, and the prize happened to be a month-long scholarship to travel to the United States to take photographs

He left Europe for the first time to set foot in the United States. But that month spawned several more trips over the next few years

Carnicelli visited Detroit, New York, D.C., San Francisco, Chicago and Buffalo. The work he did, some 50 years later, would become "American Voyages

" Here are some of the photos Carnicelli took during his "American Voyage." Two girls in a car, Washington, D

C., 1967 (Mario Carnicelli) Window Nurses, New York, 1966 (Mario Carnicelli) Men Wanted Shopfront, Chicago, 1966 (Mario Carnicelli) Waiting queue at job centre, Chicago, 1966 (Mario Carnicelli) Yellow Cab, Chicago, 1966 (Mario Carnicelli) Fashion students, New York, 1966 (Mario Carnicelli) In Sight is The Washington Post's photography blog for visual narrative

Popular culture is killing us! Time for a Classical Renaissance! - Duration: 3:42.

The United States, and Europe, in a similar way even though the predicates may be different,

we have a deep, deep moral crisis.

The violence, the mass shootings, the drug addiction epidemic, the suicides, the violence

in the schools, which especially in Germany is becoming a huge, huge issue -- all of this

reflects that we have moved away from our best traditions in our cultures, when our

cultures were great.

This, for the United States, was for sure the spirit of the Founding Fathers, the period

of Lincoln, and naturally then FDR and Kennedy to a certain extent; and in Europe, also,

we have moved away from the great humanistic traditions of the Classical culture of the

Italian Renaissance, the Andalusian Renaissance in Spain, the German Classics, and we have

allowed that the most degenerate kind of cultures -- everything is allowed, everything goes;

the liberal idea that you can do whatever you want, there is no more binding morality,

no more binding cultural values, but whatever you're pleased to do, it's fine -- this, together

with the perversion of pornography, the violence in entertainment, in movies, in videogames,

this has had such a devastating impact on many generations, that we need urgently to

move back to the idea of Classical culture.

That we need to have beauty in our lives, we need

to have purify and ennoble our character and mind and soul, through our own aesthetical

education which we can only get from great music: from Bach, from Beethoven, from Dvorak,

from others, from great poetry, from beauty in all Classical forms of art.

And so this is the second-most important focus of the Schiller Institute.

We want to have a new world economic order which allows the economic development of every

nation on this planet, which exists through the powerful dynamic of the New Silk Road.

But it has been my view from the beginning of the Schiller Institute in 1984, that this

all would not work if it were not combined with a Classical Renaissance of Classical

culture.

So, since the Schiller Institute is engaged in many such activities, concerts, poetry

readings, and similar things, I want you to join the Schiller Institute, if you agree

that we need a new paradigm in thinking; and contact us, become a member, and work with

us, because now is the time to change history for the better.

Objectively, the possibility exists, but again, it will be the subjective factor -- are there

enough people who get on board and get active?

So contact us and work with us.

US closes busiest Mexico border crossing for several hours - Daily News - Duration: 8:37.

The United States has closed off northbound traffic for several hours at the busiest border crossing with Mexico to install new security barriers amid rumors that the caravan was preparing to rush the crossing

All northbound lanes and one of two pedestrian crossings at the San Ysidro, California were shut down at 3

15am on Monday for 'port hardening', Customs and Border Protection said in a statement

Some traffic lanes and the pedestrian crossing reopened at 6.25am. 'In the early morning hours, CBP officials received reports of groups of persons from the caravan gathering in the city of Tijuana for a possible attempt or attempts to rush illegally through the port of entry instead of presenting themselves as required to a CBP officer,' the agency said in a statement

'CBP officials suspended operations to safely place impediments at the port of entry that would restrict access to a large group attempting to run through the border crossing,' CBP said

The agency said no threat materialized after the additional security barriers were in place

President Donald Trump tweeted on Monday morning saying images of people climbing the border fence from Tijuana at the Pacific shore were 'old footage', and shared an image apparently taken overnight showing concertina wire being installed along the fence

‹ Slide me › Share this article Share 'CBP will not allow for the unlawful entry of persons into the United States, at or between our ports of entry,' said Pete Flores, Director of CBP Field Operations in San Diego

'Waiting until a large group of persons mass at the border to attempt an illegal crossing is too late for us; we need to be prepared prior to when they arrive at the border crossing,' he added

The installation of movable, wire-topped barriers threatens to complicate life for Mexicans using San Ysidro, where about 110,000 people enter the U

S. every day in 40,000 vehicles.Long lines backed up in Tijuana, where many people have to cross the border to work on the U

S. side.It came a day after of Tijuana residents protested against the presence of thousands of Central American migrants Increasing inconveniences at the border prompted by the arrival of the migrant caravan may have played a role in Sunday's protests, when about 400 Tijuana residents waved Mexican flags, sang the Mexican national anthem and chanted 'Out! Out!' referring to the migrant caravan that arrived in the border city last week

Tensions have built as nearly 3,000 migrants from the caravan poured into Tijuana in recent days after more than a month on the road - and with many more months likely ahead of them while they seek asylum in the U

S. The federal government estimates the number of migrants could soon swell to 10,000

U.S. border inspectors are processing only about 100 asylum claims a day at Tijuana's main crossing to San Diego

Asylum seekers register their names in a tattered notebook managed by migrants themselves that had more than 3,000 names even before the caravan arrived

Some Tijuana residents supported the migrants, but others accused the migrants of being messy, ungrateful and a danger to Tijuana

They also complained about how the caravan forced its way into Mexico, calling it an 'invasion

' And they voiced worries that their taxes might be spent to care for the group.'We don't want them in Tijuana,' protesters shouted

Juana Rodriguez, a housewife, said the government needs to conduct background checks on the migrants to make sure they don't have criminal records

A block away, fewer than a dozen Tijuana residents stood with signs of support for the migrants

Keyla Zamarron, a 38-year-old teacher, said the protesters don't represent her way of thinking as she held a sign saying: 'Childhood has no borders

'Most of the migrants who have reached Tijuana via caravan in recent days set out more than a month ago from Honduras, a country of 9 million people

Dozens of migrants in the caravan who have been interviewed by Associated Press reporters have said they left their country after death threats

But the journey has been hard, and many have turned around.Alden Rivera, the Honduran ambassador in Mexico, told the AP on Saturday that 1,800 Hondurans have returned to their country since the caravan first set out on Oct

13, and that he hopes more will make that decision. 'We want them to return to Honduras,' said Rivera

The migrants' expected long stay in Tijuana has raised concerns about the ability of the border city of more than 1

6 million people to handle the influx.Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum has called the migrants' arrival an 'avalanche' that the city is ill-prepared to handle, calculating that they will be in Tijuana for at least six months as they wait to file asylum claims

Gastelum has appealed to the federal government for more assistance to cope with the influx

Tijuana officials converted a municipal gymnasium and recreational complex into a shelter to keep migrants out of public spaces

The city's privately run shelters have a maximum capacity of 700. The municipal complex can hold up to 3,000

At the municipal shelter, Josue Caseres, 24, expressed dismay at the protests against the caravan

'We are fleeing violence,' said the entertainer from Santa Barbara, Honduras. 'How can they think we are going to come here to be violent?'Meanwhile, 2,700 miles south, another wave of 200 migrants departed from El Salvador headed north on Sunday, determined to also find safety in numbers to reach the U

S. Edwin Alexander Gomez, 20, told AP in San Salvador that he wants to work construction in New York, where he hears the wages are better and the city is safer

U.S. President Donald Trump, who sought to make the caravan a campaign issue in the midterm elections, used Twitter on Sunday to voice support for the mayor of Tijuana and try to discourage the migrants from seeking entry to the U

S.Trump wrote that like Tijuana, 'the U.S. is ill-prepared for this invasion, and will not stand for it

They are causing crime and big problems in Mexico. Go home!'He followed that tweet by writing: 'Catch and Release is an obsolete term

It is now Catch and Detain. Illegal Immigrants trying to come into the U.S.A., often proudly flying the flag of their nation as they ask for U

S. Asylum, will be detained or turned away.'

High grade US Morgan dollar - Duration: 8:50.

so hello coin collectors are you going today my name is Glenn today I

have a Morgan dollar so don't know what the Morgan dollar is it is actually a

u.s. $1 coin as a weight of twenty six point seven three grams there should be

the actual weight diameter of 38 put my millimeters thickness of Freeport one

and Dow minted between 1878 and 1921 and they seem to be popular because they're

pretty easy to get they have a high mintage and you can get them get a lot

of them for under $100 probably except for rare ones and high-grade

uncirculated coins it depends on the year so I got this coin it was sold to

me is almost uncirculated but I reckon it might be extremely fine it could be

almost uncirculated I'm not too familiar with US coins so this one has a mint

mark then below yes which is San Francisco and you can get ever mint

marks CC for Carson City I believe we're just some place in the US and over New

Orleans which is a Louisiana and this is actually the first u.s. coin that I have

come across so let me just fix this up that actually doesn't have a crappy

Eagle in it so this one has a eagle standing on look like sticking it to

arrows from a bow and arrow heads in god we trust' United States of America one

dollar I personally I'm not really interested

in US coins I think I think they're over right a bit as there is a 320 million

Yanks Americans then um it is a good area to get into so as you can see

it has a lot of moisture it also has a lot of damage for so I'm gonna great

distance yeah myself says a porous unum which is on a lot of coins but it

doesn't have a Liberty so have Liberty no so that is missing so this one is

dated 1891 and it has a mintage of five million two hundred ninety six thousand

so it's quite a high mintage for a Morgan dollar outside of the moment

which is a Philadelphia Denver one of those two I can't remember and well it's

just a normal mintage so I'm wearing gloves

because I actually don't want to get acid so if you put human acid on there

it has things that can react with the copper and to a lesser extent the silver

so how would you

ynette this coin is actually real so I have scales here okay

now I don't have actually coin scales this only goes to one gram because I do

my coin one got damaged so I need to get another one but this one will do for

these tests so if you put the come on maybe I'll turn it around let's see what

weight we get

looks like about 27 grams I'll put it in the center 26 27 in this option but if

you have a coin scale you can actually find out the actual weight of the coin

okay then you need to find that diameter so you'll have it in inches that's one

nearly one and a half inch I don't know what the sub denominations of inches are

but that's basically I know millimeters because I'm a civilized person he should

be on these new mr. fuller specifications

she'll be thirty eight point one millimeters then depending you do it

looks about that in only thirty eight point one but if you get a caliber which

you saw two pincers you put together and you can actually get a more accurate

measurement of the size if you want to do the magnet test let's find out so I

have a magnet so if you go out that no so it's not made out of any steel still

it could be a plated coin you just never know and then you get into the finer

details you actually there are a lot of sites on fake Morgan Dollars so there's

a silver coins I actually have a video where you put ice on different metals

and it shows that Silver's met highest thermal conductivity so the amount of

energy gives off to the ice which is 406 something that's millijoules joules per

degree Celsius so

you can use the ice test and the ice will melt quicker on the silver the

magnets what else dimensions tests you have just done that

the white test visual test now the visual test is for the more experienced

coin collectors and what you're looking for is like you take a few images of

real coins from the internet prefer from sites that are like a those that have

coin shops coin groups that has some legitimacy and you just see if there's

any differences in the coin now I have not done it so I'm not too sure but I'm

going to actually do that later it's also a ping test which I won't use this

Morvan dollar but I use the 50 cent coin so what you do is you that's the ping

test and different coins do that as a higher or a ping test

high-pitch because it's a lot smaller this one is a deeper one and if I take

five cent there is even higher because it's just the way it goes and that is

the ping test so if you do it silver actually sound different than the copper

and nickel coins but I wouldn't do this one because I've this good chance you

could actually drop it and damage it so what else let me have now that's all

the information I have so a beautiful Morgan dollar I'd like to feel from

America I'd like to have a comment about what you think this coin is like what do

you think the grady's is there any problems with this coin

you see so there's a reading on the side

as I from Australia not for me that much of us coins but anyway I'd say thank

very much for watching our awesome coin collecting time people okay they give it

a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel if you haven't already and have awesome

coin collecting time people bye bye
