Porsche Classic interview with Uwe Makrutzke - Racing Rivals - Duration: 20:22.
Welcome Rivals Fans!
I'm Prodigal Grim.
I'm here at Rennsport at Leguna Seca and we are here checking out Project Gold, the beautiful
993 restoration project.
I'm here with Uwe Makrutzki and Philipp Salm.
Uwe, what's your role with Porsche Classic?
So I'm the head of Porsche Classic Factory Restoration workshop.
Within this department we are restoring cars.
Especially in this case, we built a brand new car.
A one of one.
Very exciting project, very unique and it's been a lot of fun honestly saying.
Awesome!
So Philipp, what's your role with Porsche Classic?
I'm doing Sales and marketing within Porsche Classic.
So were one department within the sales department of Porsche AG.
We're actually taking care of the parts supply and factory restoration.
So we're here celebrating 70 years of Porsche with Project Gold and of all the generations
to select from, why the 993?
That was quite simple actually.
because we had this body shell, this original body still in storage that we decided what
could be our contribution to 70 years of Porsche sports cars.
How you wind up with a random body shell for a 993 just sitting in a closet so to speak?
We have some stuff in our warehouses and in storage that we take out of series production.
It's not that we have lots of body shells.
Don't get me wrong.
This is one and that's the only one of the 993.
We have some general engines and some other stuff in our storage that not for sale and
we didn't want to scrap it either.
So, that was the idea, I'm happy that we kept it!
Why is there so much fanaticism and passion for the air-cooled generations?
I think because first of all it's long time car, it's historic.
It has a certain sound to it.
It was the classic Porsche 911.
With the 996, there came a new generation of sports cars with the water cooled engines.
So i think this is why that…
There was actually from the development a lot better, but it had the spirit of the air
cooled just that it went back to the late 40's when Porsche was founded.
So this is a very specific meta to the Porsche fans.
So the pure and originality of what became Porsche and then you move on to newer technology,
and even though it's newer, that's more efficient, that's more powerful, it's
still the original.
With the 2016 GTS as the last naturally aspirated Porsche minus the GT3's.
Could the 2016 GTS possibly become a future classic given that we're moving to a more
turbo and electric generation?
That's really hard to say.
I think almost all 911's that are not built too often they will all be future classics
in my eyes.
But this is something where we would have to have the possibility to look into the future
and this is not too easy for us either.
Depends on the fans, you know?
Depends on the clubs and the fans and other future developments of the brand of what comes
up with all the new technologies with the mobility.
So we don't really know how the classic fans are going to go.
So the VIN number on this 993 is unique in that you didn't select a current VIN number.
Why did you end up going with an incremented VIN number from…
There was quite a long discussion.
Since it is a show car and not registration anyway.
We were discussing on what should be the VIN number on it since the VIN number is more
part of the show car.
It's like more than a reference number.
So it's flavor.
It's the flavor on top the Project Gold 911 Porsche Classic series.
And we have the VIN number, we had a look into our books.
Looked at the last produced 911 turbo in '98.
It was 70801 was the last production car.
It doesn't mean it was the last one to leave the factory because there was a lot of individualization
was done in-house.
But it was the last of the production line, so we just put 1 digit on it and it was 802
in the end.
That's awesome.
Now in our culture, we have different colors that represent anniversaries.
For the 70th marriage anniversary, it's diamond white.
What ended up leading to a Golden Yellow metallic for the 70th Anniversary Turbo S Exclusive
Series and Project Gold?
That's actually quite easy as you look outside the window.
Since we were thinking about what could be our contribution to the 70 years of Porsche
sports cars and we have our colleagues with Exclusive Manufaktur right next to us.
We were talking with them on what their ideas would be and how would they individualize
a car in '98 would look like.
Then, they had the Exclusive Manufaktur, the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series.
So we take this design and bring it on to the 911 Turbo Classic Series.
And that's why we came up with Golden Yellow Metallic.
What else other than like the accenting and color ties Project Gold to the Exclusive Series?
You mean all the other little things we did in the build?
Uwe knows them all.
That's his specialty.
Of course, we have some really special features on the 993 turbo.
Let's begin with the lights.
We tinted them so they gathered dimmed look with very matching to the golden color.
We have in the interior, a lot of special features so the stripes, design looks very
similar to the 991 exclusive series and it was really a challenge to align this from
a draftsmanship standpoint.
So we have the interior basically 993 and we covered it with 991 design.
So building this bridge was a challenge but I'm sure you can take a look at it, we [nailed]
it.
So next, special feature for example on the tail pipes.
So we designed them in this black color in this special surface.
All those parts you can buy in the future.
Are they available now?
Yes, they're soon available.
No, they're already available.
So we took 2 parts that we bring into our warehouse.
Since I said, we have 52,000 parts available.
Out of that six and half thousand part are available for the 993.
So we could build the car from scratch with the parts we have.
For example, the rims were something very special.
Absolutely.
So…
When we did the rims, we used real modern technology.
First, we painted them in gold.
Then painted one layer black on it.
Then laser cut out fine line, fine lines.
The effect is amazing.
Amazing effect, yes.
It's exactly the same technology as used on the Exclusive Series.
So that's where we worked very closely.
The whole process and the individualization of the car was done with his colleagues and
us with our designers within Porsche.
So they had certain ideas, we had ideas, they had ideas, and his whole team had lots of
ideas.
It was an ongoing process of what we are able to do: What looks good, what is very individual,
and what we can do and within that we have to look at as well as too much on the street
legal point of view.
So we have to tinted glass on the rear lights, front lights, headlights lights and the signals,
So there was a very very interesting process for on this
for more than one and half years.
Was there anything y'all didn't get to do that you wanted to do?
Excuse me, say that again.
Was there anything you wanted to do that you didn't get to do?
Little details I'm sure, but I wouldn't know exactly.
There were always, but not in total.
If you have more team members there, there are certain ideas you have to say where you
have to say no and yes, and maybe, and this may be good ideas.
And the same thing with specialists.
The guy that did all the upholstery.
He had many ideas and we'd say "Great craftsmanship, but different".
So there was an ongoing process.
It was very hard to be… keep the balance because one step further and you are in the
disbalance.
So you have the car over done.
Too much ideas in the end, but we picked up exactly the best ones.
We feel really good with this.
Since we are factory restoration, we want to stay as original as possible and original
as necessary on the other side.
So the individualization we are having is a contribution to the Turbo Exclusive Series
and not more than that.
Keep it exactly
Very smooth and quickening.
Well, soon Project Gold is going to wind up in someone's garage.
It's scheduled to be auctioned off in Atlanta... later this month, next month?
27th of October.
What are the expectations for that auction.
We have no expectations of the price side.
We made an estimate which was another quite funny experience.
We had a lot of ideas on where the estimate would be.
So we took the German mark, the D-Mark, price of the two monies from 1998 which was 307,320
Deutsche Marks.
Then we took the average exchange rate to dollars today.
We came up with the estimate of 174,546.40 Euro dollars.
This the estimate.
You've been asked that before apparently.
And I'm kind of a numbers guy too.
Now the proceeds from this are going to the newly founded Ferry Porsche Foundation.
Correct.
What does that foundation aim to accomplish?
The Ferry Porsche Foundation actually meant to help children and other social responsibilities
at the Porsche locations, but since it is very new there of course could be also other
aspects.
And I wouldn't doubt it if someone pays a lot of money to have this car in his garage,
in his racetrack, in his collection, that we can discuss what should be the money be
used for.
So I think they're very open.
The Ferry Porsche Foundation is a foundation.
It is not us.
It is they're thing to do.
We give them the money and proceeds and they use it.
Do you think that by any chance that..
I read it may actually go towards education and things of that nature, do you think that
it might generate your future replacements in that it may be an interesting cycle.
We keep working about 120 years, so it is a very long term view.
It is hard when you're talking about social aspect, children, and so on.
And as always to do with educational stuff, but I wouldn't think that it goes into educating
someone to go into Porsche Classic necessarily or classic know how.
I wouldn't go that far.
It would be very interesting for that the Project Gold ends up leading to somebody else
being completely indirectly influenced by it.
Now, Uwe.
We did our homework on you and...
Sorry, we did our homework on you and we found that you like keeping a Porsche or any car
that you would build on your own… for your own, very pure and of original soul; but we
found another quote where you talked about taking like a 72/73 F-model and then combining
it with a decade's generation's later… a decade's later 959 tech.
Where does the blend between keeping it original and then a little bit of new and modernism
plus just creative customization…
Where does that all meet in the middle for you?
So for me, especially with responsible for keeping the originality.
This is our main business during the week, during the month, during the year.
So every human, every guy needs to have contrast.
My emotion doing this 993 was increasing extremely.
So my mind was always running in hi-speed mode.
And during this, this idea was in my mind.
So, I'm 100% sure that our team would be able to realize my absolutely crazy idea.
It's not crazy.
So I don't think I need to touch is ok for my boss who pays for the marketing and sales
department or they put me in prison.
Both options are possible.
But I know it should be.
But really…
I do like…
I do like taking care of the history of traditional Porsche.
I take this serious.
This is my mission.
This is what I'm paid for.
But on the other hand, we… everything is changing.
Time is running so fast and I think it is not too bad to have two strategies, but they
may not cross.
95, 97% we should do our job taking care of the Porsche Classic cars.
Restore them proper and 100% originality.
Then we have done everything right.
And the little 3%.
The 3% is his idea.
The 3% is the 100% personality.
3% is his idea.
I'm working 120% to make him have these ideas… and keep going.
Another fun thing is I've seen is the same.
You have the scenery out there, a lot of things.
We don't mind if someone has a car which is no good, to make it somehow a street fun
car and how it looks, but our customers and the wide range of Porsche people out there.
They target reproducing general parts with the right specifications and correct quantity
and so on.
And they are happy there is a factory installation bringing back nice looking 356's but if
you put them in the acid bath, you're going to be like "no" and then bring them back
to original specifications better than ever with aggressive SOMETHING and perfect art
in the end.
Even better than the early production days.
Which is sad on one side for the doing the hard work in those days but with technologies
of today, we can build it.
What he is saying is: Craftsmanship, we have it.
Know-how, we have it.
Experience, we have it.
We could do almost everything, but that's where we kind of end it.
We have a waiting time of 2 years for our customers.
Exactly.
That's what you describe.
This makes it difficult… dangerous… dangerous.
If you are able to do something like that, so you want to do it; but you must be allowed
to do it.
So we have reached that point, most critical point, yes.
But we have at the moment, we have 18 959 in our workshop.
So, I drive this car very often and I fell in love with it.
In love with the performance, this special performance.
959 drives unique.
Unique!
It's a special technology from a decade was..
We battled Ferrari F40 during this time And I feel that I would have won this battle...
sometimes.
The look of a 959, not everybody likes this style, this design.
It's unique, definitely.
What I want to do is take the amazing performance technology and put on it a pretty nice dress
... for this.
I'm sure we're going to find someone doing exactly that in the near future and it's
not us.
And also very important.
In an absolutely professional, high, Porsche quality.
No compromise.
No…
But coming back to Project Gold, this is future ideas … this is future ideas that might
come … or not.
I'm on fire, you feel it?
Awesome.
Well Philip and Uwe, thank y'all so much for taking the time to do this interview with
us.
It's been an absolute blast.
Thanks for having us here.
Rivals fans I hope you're enjoying Project Gold and I hope…and Rennsport events.
We hope you get to unlock your piece of Project Gold.
We're out!
Bye.
