The Red Devils have now lost two of their first three Premier League matches for the first time since the division's inaugural year in 1992-93 after Harry Kane's header and a Lucas Moura brace, all in the second half
United conceded twice in two minutes for the second straight outing after a 3-2 loss to Brighton last week with their recent form having cranked the pressure up on Mourinho - who has looked frustrated since the early stages of pre-season
The Portuguese boss allowed his frustrations to get the better of him again in a fiery post-match press conference, walking out after an exchange with a journalist in which he criticised a lack of respect for his achievements in England
He fumed: "Do you know what was the result? 3-0. [Holds up three fingers] Do you know what this means? Three Premierships
I won more Premierships alone than the other 19 managers together. Three for me and two for them
Respect, respect, respect man. Respect." Mourinho was mentioned as one of the managers most likely to leave his position before Christmas but the United manager and he felt that the press were ganging up on him
He added to journalists: "You want to make the miracle of my team played so well and strategically we were so, so, so, so, so, so good and you want to try and transform this press conference into let's blame the guy
" Bookmakers Betfair have even slashed odds on Mourinho leaving his post by the end of the week to 6/1, with a 1/4 price available for Mourinho to be gone before the end of the campaign
And a video on social media in the last minutes of United's defeat - the heaviest home reverse of Mourinho's managerial career - appeared to show Woodward being told by someone in the director's box to sack the under-fire boss
Television cameras panned to a stony-faced Woodward in the stands on 85 minutes, moments after Spurs scored their third goal, and captured the man beside him seeming to lean over and say: "Sack him!" Executive vice-chairman Woodward's relationship with Mourinho is known to be strained after Mourinho's desire for a new centre-back was not fulfilled in the summer
Mourinho also walked out early of a spiky pre-match press conference before Spurs, turning up half-an-hour early and staying for just four minutes and 19 seconds as he gave blunt answers regarding his and Woodward's standing, saying simply: "No
" Told that there were reports of a fall-out, Mourinho continued: "I don't know 10 per-cent of what is written
I'm not the right guy to answer." United's disjointed recent displays have caused real alarm among United fans but club legend Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, has told United to hold off on swinging the axe
The ex-right-back, who spent his entire 19-year career at United under the tutelage of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, told Monday Night Football: "We saw Louis van Gaal sacked after an FA Cup final victory, we saw David Moyes sacked with four games to go of a season, so we are no longer talking about a football club that is behaving as it has historically done
"I accept these are different times and I accept the difficulties and challenges, but my honest view as I stand here now is that Ed Woodward gave him a contract last season, only seven or eight months ago, and he should see that contract through to the end and do the job
"You can't keep jumping around with managers. I hear the third-year Mourinho stories and all the rest of it and you can't disagree with those stories because there is some history
"But what I would say is it's time now for Manchester United to batten down the hatches and for Jose Mourinho and Ed Woodward to sort themselves out if there is a problem there
"Get the team right for the rest of the season because the club is bigger than any individual
They have to get themselves sorted because it's not a time for in-fighting and politics
"It is still too early - three games into the season - to start suggesting there should be a change of manager
Nothing could be further from the truth. "It has to be that Jose Mourinho is allowed to go through and complete this season
If he does well he should go through the next season as well, which is when his contract runs out
" All eyes will be on Mourinho later this week when United take on Burnley - who face a Europa League qualifying second-leg against Olympiacos on Thursday - on Sunday afternoon at Turf Moor (4pm)
