China trying to avoid trade accountability offering to buy as much

as 70 billion dollars of US farm and energy products if only the Trump

administration would drop fifty billion dollars in tariffs on Chinese exports

the offer doesn't come anywhere near closing Americans 375 billion dollar

trade deficit with China and the White House says it's still enacting the

tariffs by mid-june president Trump's new tariffs on steel and aluminum

imports bringing jobs back to America case in point US Steel Corporation which

today announced the planned rien de onís at its plant in Granite City Illinois

u.s. steel plans to hire another up 300 employees after hiring 500 back in March

joining us tonight is the CEO of US Steel David Byrd David great to have you

with us and this president is truly making a difference for your industry

isn't he yes he is thank you very much Lou we're delighted to be here we're

delighted to see that demand has increased significantly and so we're

able to open up not just one blast furnace at Granite City Illinois but two

blast furnaces and as you said that's 800 people will have back to work and

we're putting them through the paces now and they're responding exceptionally

well and we should be able to turn on that first blast furnace later this

month and then the second blast furnace in October so we're absolutely excited

for our team and for our customers so that we can provide mined melted and

made in the USA steel yeah in you know your company your trade style is iconic

America and to think what US Steel has gone through over the past several

decades is extraordinary and it has required Donald Trump to basically step

up and say to the world you're out of your minds we have such trade imbalances

across the world he is the only voice in leadership

in the world in the Western world talking about trade imbalances and

restoring rationality to the international trading system and the and

the left and the if you will establishment right are just clucking

like you know their nadir wailing gnashing their teeth is if he is the one

prescribing a destiny that should make every American shiver instead of the

destiny that we have been living for thirty years well president Trump does

have it absolutely right he needs to trust his instincts you know the reality

and steel we've been in a trade war for over thirty years

yeah and you can imagine it takes a courageous president like this to get

people to this to the table to have a discussion and actually force some

resolution here meanwhile we're doing the right things for our workers here in

the United States and of course special thanks to Commerce Secretary Ross and

Peter Navarro who have been fighting the good fight every step of the way

absolutely certainly the president's leadership that's made a difference with

two three two yeah it's it's it's amazing to think what this president was

saying in 2015 about American made American jobs in the fact that the

United States has played chump for so long in point if most Americans don't

realize we have not had a trade surplus in this country for over four decades I

that you know that's just irrational and we've had both Republicans and Democrats

in that White House who have basically conspired against the working man and

woman in this country a middle-class families workers in in middle-class

wages as you well know I have been been dropping not rising until this president

took office yeah you're you're absolutely right I

think it's it has it been intentional by previous administrations but it is it's

been the absence of acumen the understanding of what's really going on

here right because what we want is a level playing field that's all we want

you give us a level playing field and we can

compete with anybody in the world and you know I can remember back in the 70s

when people were saying exactly that and then the 80s they were saying that and

by the 90s it was too damn late we thought but it turns out in 2016 we

weren't too damn late President Trump arrived on the scene just in time and

it's that's absolutely true because you know this steel industry is vital to the

national defense of this country and it's not just the military it's building

the roads and the bridges and taking care of our society if you don't have a

strong commodities industry you really can't make things for manufacturing and

we know how these bad actors have behaved some of them even allies that

they basically take the business away and then they jack up the prices and

they kill the they kill the industry and then jack up the prices so we know what

game is being played and this president understand what games being played and

now we got the customer demand coming back to the good old USA and our steel

workers absolutely thrilled to be part of this if it burnt we are delighted

that you're with us and hope you'll come back soon to talk about the continued

success of US Steel and this great country of ours thanks so much well

thanks for having us thank you very much up next here the Dems and rhinos are

relentless in their pursuit of amnesty for illegal immigrants why is that well

have a latest for you on the daca discharge petition in Paul Ryan's House

of Representatives you know it's right next to K Street the Koch brothers Wall

Street the Business Roundtable straight ahead all of that and more

we'll be right back

DIMMs and rhinos in the house are just a handful of signatures from forcing a

vote on amnesty for illegal immigrants Fox News chief congressional

correspondent Mike Emanuel with the story in that house some GOP moderates

are trying to break up gridlock on immigration

two more Democrats signing on today so organizers are just three short of the

218 signatures needed to force votes on immigration bills June 25th as House

Republican leaders try to find a GOP solution we're very close on a couple of

different fronts that really boil down to how are we going to handle the doctor

recipients president Trump weighed in on immigration first thing this morning on

Twitter separating families at the border is the fault of bad legislation

passed by the Democrats border security laws should be changed but the Dems

can't get their act together started the wall attorney General Jeff Sessions

issued this warning to those considering coming here illegally we don't want to

do this at all if people don't want to be separated from their children they

should not bring them with them that's we've got to get this message out

you're not given in the energy the acting head of Immigration and Customs

Enforcement offered this advice to lawmakers if you wanted to a fix on

doctor let's talk about the overarching issues of earlier immigration and let's

fix that so we don't have a doc every 10 years it's not clear that immigration

would be brought up during August since McConnell has said he's only interested

in taking up a bill President Trump would be willing to sign but cutting

short recess could have the effect of forcing some cooperation on legislation

and nominees Lou I appreciate it very much thanks so much

president Trump threatening to veto any such legislation Mike Emanuel thank you

and on Wall Street Stocks close mix the dow down 14 points the S&P up - the

Nasdaq up 31 buy them on the big board 3.4 billion shares the

States the world's largest oil producer asking Saudi Arabia and OPEC to raise

their oil production by a million barrels a day to help fight rising US

oil prices think about that one think about that one we're one of the

world's largest producers now and we're asking OPEC to kind of boost things up

so that I I have to tell you a reminder listen to my reports three times a day

coast to coast on the salem radio network up next no Eagles no problem

president Trump celebrates America after canceling the Philadelphia Eagles White

House visit Rebecca Rose woodland mark Simone join me here next stay with us

we'll be right back the Philadelphia Eagles in their their owner Jeff flurry

trying to pull what the White House is calling a political stunt leading up to

the team's White House visit President Trump turning of the event on its head

canceling their visit today and instead holding a celebration of merit of

America where he remind us why well I all those folks should be standing and

singing the national anthem instead of as he put it huddling in their locker

rooms we said and to remember the fallen heroes who never made it back home we

stand to show our love for our fellow citizens and our magnificent

Constitution well following the cancellation by the president

Philadelphia's mayor oh what a piece of work he is Jim Kenney called President

Trump of fragile egomaniac and not a true patriot

Kenney apparently thinks he would recognize one of your if he saw one

joining us tonight defense attorney Rebecca Rose woodland and wor radio

talk-show host mark Simone great to have you both here I start with what in the

world is Laurie thinking the Eagles I mean they're it's really it's becoming

the city of Philadelphia it's it's not it's unbecoming of our country they're

taking a political stance if they have an issue with the president

that is not the way to do it no other mechanism you have an issue you go and

vote next time there is a presidential election you do not force team a team a

group of people who want to Super Bowl a city a state that's so proud of their

team to then not have the celebration they're entitled to by playing games

it's not appropriate well they're not entitled to if the president is state

says we're not going to play well because they played games and this this

route to me is remarkable that the NFL has just sort of saved itself like Roger

Goodell who I've criticized throughout for two years actually doing a smart

thing and then he's got this cute Lurie the owner pulling the stunt with his

football team it's fascinating these owners are

billionaires that run the multi-billion dollar businesses and they're totally

intimidated by these dopey players they can't sit them down and say you're an

employee the stadium is our office you can protest all you want can't do it

here in the office we're running and we give you plenty of money and a free time

so why don't you go do the road test and you can what's one thing to protest the

flag this has nothing to do with Donald Trump you're protesting the White House

yeah it's a part of America it's crazy NBA stars Steph Curry LeBron James

you know bran may be getting curry may be beating his brains in on the court

right now but they're together in fueling this anti-trump thing in the NBA

hey where does this gonna stop with these athletes I don't know if they

recognize that by not standing for the national anthem what you're doing is

insulting veterans people who stood up for our freedom the national anthem is

not directly related to the president it's the country as a whole it's

democracy it's Jesus just I don't understand how give me a distinction

again mark is right you want to protest either protest in the voting booth

protest in a different way not with your group not when you're playing a sport

and not against the entire of America the veterans tonight we've got the eight

primaries mark what do you think is going to happen are we going to see the

blue wave they'll all of the savants now are saying

no blue wave Oh another big huge blue wave Oh though they're leaderless they

have no issue except they hate Trump their rudderless the DNC has no money

this is but they want open borders that want high crime they want illegal

immigrants to cross the border at will and by the way don't worry about a job

in California they want to give you 500 in stockton california they want every

citizen to have $500 a month guaranteed income you got the law yeah that's a

great I a strict background checks on guns but if you want to cross the border

no background check we don't care who you are I mean it's starting to sound a

bit like Bernie Sanders campaign where everyone was going to a college

education no and although that was lovely economically it's not feasible I

mean we have to work within the tax structure and the money we make on the

Terek structure these things sound great but they have to be funded yeah they

happen somebody has to make some money at some point and have to create a

product and a service it's called life unless you know they want to just revert

to the jungle to the primitive State it's it's money you've got record low

unemployment in nineteen states you're not gonna have a wave doing that kind of

successful economy yeah I mean you've got the markets exploding the economy is

growing and and and then you've got folks on the Left who think that

everything should be handed to them they want dependency at any cost

but so long as the cost is paid by someone else so as we look at this I've

got one last question here does Paul Ryan survive his lame-duck miss very

quickly I just know I think there's no getting rid of this guy it's it's like a

cold that keeps coming back it's Paul Ryan thanks so much we appreciate it I

sure hope that Rebecca's right in mark is wrong

tonight's quote of the evening for those NFL players who defy the president our

national anthem Ralph Waldo Emerson said men are respectable only as they respect

that's it for us tonight thanks for joining us

good luck

you

Singapore's Shangri-La Hotel expected to host North Korea-U.S. summit on June 12 - Duration: 2:56.

Other than the time and date, what about the exact venue for the historic event?

There hasn't been any official announcement yet.

But as our Park Ji-won reports, one site has recently emerged as the most prominent candidate.

Singapore's Shangri-La Hotel is highly expected to be the venue for next Tuesday's historic

North Korea-U.S. summit.

Speculation is being driven by the Singaporean government's decision to declare the area

around the five-star hotel as a "special event area" from June 10th to the 14th.

With the designation,... people and vehicles entering the zone will be subject to strict

security checks and police inspections,... and certain restricted items will not be allowed

into the zone.

Since opening its doors in 1971,... the Shangri-La Hotel has been the go-to venue in Asia for

a series of diverse international events.

In 2015, the hotel hosted the landmark summit between China's President Xi Jinping and Taiwan's

then-president Ma Ying-jeou,... the first-ever meeting between the two countries since the

1949 Chinese Communist Revolution.

The hotel has also played host to the "Shangri-La Dialogue," Asia's biggest meeting of defense

ministers, military officials and security experts,... every year,... since 2002.

This year's forum ended its three-day run on Sunday with U.S. Secretary of Defense James

Mattis, South Korea's Defense Minister Song Young-moo and Indian Prime Minister Narendra

Modi, among those in attendance.

Experts in Singapore explain that the five-star hotel's experience of hosting such major events

and its location make it a suitable place for the summit talks.

"It's actually located off the commercial, the main commercial belt in Singapore, the

Orchard Road belt in a residential area.

But it's not actually very far away.

So it's very easy to get to, but when you host a major event there, it does not require

the authorities to go through very significant logistical challenge to close some of the

roads, or to impose stricter security measures in that area.

So it's quite convenient in that sense.

Another reason is because the hotel sits on a higher ground, so it's much easier for any

security forces to observe and take a note of potential activities which could threaten

any major events or even some of the guests there."

Other luxury hotel locations like Capella on Sentosa Island,... and the Fullerton Hotel

in the Marina Bay area are also considered strong candidates for providing rooms for

the North Korean and U.S. delegations,... but nothing has been confirmed yet.

The venue for the media center has also been confirmed; thousands of journalists will work

from the F1 Pit Building in downtown Singapore to cover the historic summit.

Park Ji-won, Arirang News.

unCHAINed -- BSIC Conference at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington D.C. - Duration: 9:10.

the judges decided the winning project to be unCHAINed. unCHAINed is a Digital

Identity and Resource Allocation System (DIRAS) please Trevor Campbell and

Todd Schultz come up and tell us about your solution congratulation

hi everyone so we are team unCHAINed and we were working in the refugees

challenge so if you look here on the screen

here's a very big problem the refugee crisis as of today there are 65 million

people who have been forcibly displaced from their homes it's an enormous

problem and we have many government organizations governments and nonprofits

working on this problem but unfortunately there's still so much left

to be done so here's the problem there's more than 65 million people who have

been forcibly displaced and the reason for this is either due to conflict

climate change or some kind of other challenges that present hardships for

people and most of these refugees lack money they lack identification and they

don't have a means to prove their identity and they can't get access to

services to help and to humanitarian aid and unfortunately a lot of these

resources have been insufficient and have been poorly distributed so efforts

for humanitarian aid organizations have been falling short because their goal is

to get people assistance and to get them in camps and provide assistance and help

them uplift themselves into better situations but they can't do that so

here's another problem outside of just refugees the World Bank estimates that

more than a billion people today we learned it's 1.7 billion people are

unbanked and they don't have the proper identification documents to prove their

identity they can't get bank accounts they can't get loans they can't get

access to services and without proper documentation this effectively locks

these people out of the global economy and this is a huge problem 1.7 billion

people that's enormous and so by creating a global distributed identity

system we can enter these people into the global economy and help them get

access to aid services and resources that can uplift them out of their

situations so how do we fix this so we're gonna be talking about the

solution we came up with which we call the unCHAINed DIRAS stands for

Digital Identity and Resource Allocation System (DIRAS) so the key idea

underpinning this whole model is to combine digital identities and ERC-20

token wallet to be able to link in a refugee or displaced persons personal

identification to a monetary fund that is independent of any country nation or

border so the way we're doing that is implementing these brand new Ethereum

standards proposed by a Fabian Vogelsteller co-author of the ERC-20 token

contract which helped define how we can identify individual actors in a system

and how those individual actors can make claims on each other's identities so how

would we go about implementing this technology this big change so the first

thing we would have to do is we would have to identify certain partners

international aid organizations that would be willing to pilot or try this

technology these organizations would be allotted a single 725 contract

deployed onto the Etheruem network that would serve as their identity from this

contract they can place claims on refugees they wish to accept into their

network and upon making this initial claim refugees identity is federated and

tokens are distributed to them and as time goes along this workflow is

continuously validated through peer-to-peer transactions and periodic

deposits of funds into refugee token wallets our MVP is made up of combining

like I said earlier the 725 and 735 implementations our already deployed

ERC-20 token test transactions an identity mapper to match these 725 organizations

to the refugees within their network a mobile interface and biometric

authentication so now we come to the important part why does this all matter

so this is a 2 part benefit it benefits both the organizations that

serve refugees and refugees themselves so some of the benefits that our system

has for aid organization is that it uncovers data that was previously

unavailable so we can get a lot of transactional data and information as to

what our refugees needs what are they spending their resources on what do they

need more of and where are all these resources going where are people going

and so using the system aid organization can make their processes more efficient

more cost-effective and see better impact

from their investments and from their missions and so along with this we

also get a lot of increased transparency from the humanitarian aid system so we

can see exactly where resources are going how they're being spent and that

provides a lot of benefits for the donors and patrons of these

organizations so one of the important parts too is that transactions and

identities are validated continuously so in doing this we can analyze

transactions look at spending behaviors patterns and figure out where resources

are needed what resources might be more effectively spent elsewhere and we can

also analyze transaction and find bad actors in the refugee system so right

now it's very difficult to find people that are abusing the system and this

provides insight we can use data analytics and find abnormal spending

patterns abnormal behaviors and we may be able to penalize these people and

refuse them aid if they are abusing the system and so along with the data

analytics were able to provide insights to aid organizations so that they can

better allocate their resources which in turns increases efficiency and all that

so then we come into benefits for refugees so most of these people don't

have identities and this is a huge problem because it locks them out of the

global economy so in order to help them segue into the global economy and get

bank accounts apply for citizenship asylum and start working their way

towards rebuilding their life by continuously using the system and

transacting they can build a robust profile of their identity so each time

they make a transaction each party can affirm the identity of the other and in

doing so we can build a robust transactional history and identity for

this person and since stateless people don't have a government they don't have

an organization to depend on to build this identity for them we can do that we

can step in fill that void and help get these people entered into the global

economy and build identities for them to enter make bank accounts things like

that

not done yet there's more so one of the also really important aspects of this is

that it enables peer-to-peer transaction between refugees and service providers

that they transact with so right now people are that are in camps or in

cities they can't transact with one another and so a lot of times they spend

their time doing not much of anything and so we want them to be productive we

want them to start businesses we want them to transact with one another and

this can enable that by giving a secure way to access their funds and lay claim

to assets money things like that and so in order to you know get this

system off the ground we definitely have plans to collaborate with the UNHCR the

World Food Program they operate large Cash assistance programs right now we

just learned today that the World Food Program spends 1.4 billion dollars

probably going to be closer to 2 billion dollars per year and so in doing this we

can reduce a transactional cost and eliminate the need for banks and their

business networks which benefits them greatly to saves them a lot of money all

right so before we get done here I'm gonna talk a little bit about the

technical architecture that's making this all possible this application is a

full stack fully distributed application not hosted on any one server not

controlled by any one party and we accomplished that through deploying

Ethereum smart contracts to capture the logic of our application and using a

swarm distributed API storage to store the data and all the data points that we

need to keep on the Ethereum chain natively eventually we will be working

towards creating a react mobile front-end to allow for a mobile

application that can be used anywhere in the world I want to talk to you a bit

about me and Trevor who are here and then the four team members who couldn't

make it here Sam is on vacation somewhere in Europe Urja and Guri they

both live in India and could not quite make it to Washington DC on two days

notice and Madhu who just started a new job and he couldn't come either but

everyone you see in this screen had a lot of roles to play in this and really

really drove the development of what I think is a really amazing technology

thank you guys for listening and I really appreciate your time

UN: 'Nothing normal' about U.S. detaining immigrant children - Duration: 2:43.

JUDY WOODRUFF: There were fresh calls today for the Trump administration to end its policy

of separating families at the U.S.-Mexico border.

William Brangham begins our coverage.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: The numbers show the scope of the crisis.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection's own figures, more than 650 children were separated

from their parents at the border during a two-week period in may.

Just today in Geneva, the U.N. Office for Human Rights condemned the situation.

RAVINA SHAMSADANI, Spokeswoman, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights: There

is nothing normal about detaining children.

The U.S. should immediately halt this practice of separating families and stop criminalizing

what should at most be an administrative offense.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: These separations are occurring in large part because, in April, Attorney

General Jeff Sessions announced a zero tolerance policy at the border.

Sessions directed authorities to criminally prosecute all instances of illegal border

crossings.

Under past administrations, these were usually treated as civil cases.

The Department of Justice correctly points out that its new policy makes no mention of

separating families, but, under criminal proceedings, children cannot stay with their parents, so

they are separated.

During an appearance today on the Hugh Hewitt radio show, Sessions again defended the policy.

JEFF SESSIONS, U.S. Attorney General: If people don't want to be separated from their children,

they should not bring them with them.

We have got to get this message out.

You're not given immunity.

You have to -- you will be prosecuted if you bring -- if you come illegally.

And if you bring children, you will still be prosecuted.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Democrats and immigration rights groups argue these separations are

the clear intention of administration policy, but President Trump blames Democrats, tweeting:

"Separating families at the border is the fault of bad legislation passed by the Democrats.

Border security laws should be changed, but the Dems can't get their act together."

The president is likely referring to laws passed under previous administrations, including

one OKed unanimously by Congress in 2008, and signed by President George W. Bush.

It called for releasing immigrant children into the least restrictive setting while their

cases went through immigration court.

All this led Oregon Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley to visit the Texas border region Sunday.

Video showed his attempt to enter a federal facility where some of these immigrant children

were being held.

He was denied entry, the police were eventually called, and Merkley was told to leave.

SEN.

JEFF MERKLEY (D), Oregon: They don't want anyone to know about what's going on behind

those doors.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees

the children, accused Merkley of grandstanding.

For the "PBS NewsHour," I'm William Brangham.

New U.S. ambassador to Germany irks politicians at home and abroad - Duration: 2:54.

For the second time in barely a week, a U.S. ambassador has managed to anger lawmakers in his assigned country as well as in Washington with political statements critics called inappropriate

Richard Grenell, who was confirmed last month as U.S. ambassador to Germany, sparked the latest spat when he told an interviewer that he hoped to "empower" conservative political forces throughout Europe

Advertisement He also praised visiting Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, who rules with Austria's far-right Freedom Party, as a "rock star" and met with him

It is unusual for a U.S. ambassador to entertain the leader of a country where he is not posted

Grenell's comments sparked anger in Berlin and in Washington. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N

H.), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said it was as unacceptable for a U

S. ambassador to attempt to interfere in another country's political affairs as it would be for a foreign power to meddle here

"An ambassador's most critical responsibility is to advance our national interests by developing relationships and trust with their host country," she said

If Grenell won't refrain from political statements, she said, the administration should recall him

Grenell, 51, later tweeted that his comments had been misinterpreted. Grenell was a frequent commentator on Fox News and a longtime spokesman for U

S. ambassadors at the United Nations, including John Bolton, currently Trump's national security advisor

Several German politicians demanded Grenell be expelled. Relations between Washington and Berlin already are strained because of tensions between Chancellor Angela Merkel and Trump

Last month, David Friedman, the U.S. ambassador to Israel and one of Trump's former bankruptcy lawyers, infuriated Democrats in Washington when he claimed Republicans were a better friend to Israel than Democrats

Heather Nauert, the State Department spokeswoman, on Tuesday defended what she called the envoys' "right to express opinions

" "We think more voices should be heard, not fewer," she told a press briefing. She refused to be drawn into whether it was appropriate for a diplomat to make partisan statements

2018 Course of Distinction: Popular Culture in the US - Duration: 8:43.

Hi everyone, I'm Lance Eaton. I'm an instructor at North Shore Community College and this course, Popular culture in the United States is a recipient of the Course of Distinction award

as part of Massachusetts Colleges Online. And so what I'm going to do is give you a brief tour of the course and kind of cover some of the highlights and things that I

Think are part of why it received the award. So first off, we're just on the landing-- the announcements page.

I won't go through here, but I was pretty active and interactive on the announcements, regularly posting, not just, you know, what's do but really kind of things that came up in the news, things that were relevant to the course, interesting

things that I encountered or encouraging students to share some of their experiences.

Moving over, I just want to give a quick show of how the assignments were structured. And so there were several weekly activities.

I had this one-off assignment, called the article analysis and then they had a course project. And this was an iterative project.

So that each week, or every two or three weeks, they had something to do. And so they had two choices. One is what is popular culture.

In this assignment. it was really kind of having them delve into this idea of pop culture: What is it, how do we study it, how do we understand it.

But to do so around things that interested them. So they had options around what they could study and they do essentially little mini papers and then build it into a larger paper.

The course case study project was actually really cool. So the last third of the course,

we go into little case studies where we explore something in a specific area of popular culture and so students occasionally will actually do this as a final project--they can choose to do this as a final project and

choose an area that they want to explore and then actually be the ones that deliver that-- essentially create that module.

So it's really fun to see what they come up with and what they do.

Then a couple of these others, you know, weekly activities--students have the options of either annotating the learning guides--the learning guides that I create --and adding to them.

Or blogging and there's a series of posts and expectations around what those blog posts or what those things should look like.

Then of course we have the regular weekly discussions and every week, we do a weekly reflection. So moving over to annotating the learning guides. It's something I have students or encourage students to do through all all of my documents, whether it is assignment guidelines or

Or actual learning guides, they all come with this little statement on the right here that encourages them to annotate, to add comment,s to interact and engage with the with the materials and so they do that throughout the semester.

As I mentioned, they have the option of blogging and so they we actually have created a blog and it's been running for a couple years now.

And you can actually see here. Here's one of the prompts that I've put up. So the idea is for each module, there's a particular prompt they should be responding to them. And so this one I have them

find online comics because module 11 is the one we deal with about comics and then they have to take a look at some of the previous videos that we've done around theoretical approaches to popular culture and

apply that to an actual comic that they read. So the idea is to identify the comic book that they read,

just a couple sentences about, you know, describing the content and then actually apply a theoretical lens here and I give them an example because I think that's always important.

As the playing around with these new forms is to really kind of like go and see how or what the expectation is so or expectations are. And so I did another one on #OscarsSoWhite and around cultural hegemony.

As I said, each week I have them do a weekly reflection and in that weekly reflection, the idea is for them to just first identify what did they get to, what did they accomplish, and then what did they learn. And then finally, what questions or challenges do they still have?

Now I mentioned the Case Study Project. This is just those guidelines. So I won't go too much into it, just for a matter of time. But it's useful to know that there.

And then again, here's the guidelines for the What Is Popular Culture Project. As you can see, I kind of create this table of contents to really walk them through because

throughout each part, there's different steps. There's options, there's areas where they have to identify what they're going to do and the like.

And then one thing I did this semester, and I'm still on the fence on how successful it was is at the very beginning of the course. I actually put out a pitch to students and I said,

We can do this course in two different ways. And we can do it both

One is the standard course. And that's the way that I've structured and a lot of things that we've looked at. But I also pitched them, you know, we can actually

decide what it is we're going to learn and how it is we're going to learn it and do that in a, you know, kind of our own exploratory manner, so long as we work together on a structure now.

I think the lesson that I learned is that I needed to really think this through a bit more before doing it, right. This is something that is not too surprising.

But I do have one student who's wrapping up doing actually a podcast series around popular culture. And so I'm excited for for that final product.

But definitely, it was something I learned that and understand why didn't go as well, or I only ended up with one student

and something I think in the future I will be able to do better with where I actually pitched with students or students have an idea of doing things.

That aren't necessarily, you know, the usual cycle of work or is really them being the knowledge creators rather than me. Alright. So moving along.

So that was the what I call the DIY version of the course where the students would craft it together but

if they didn't do that and they opted for the standard or the traditional course and you know I have this structured in a way of

really kind of getting us to think about what is popular culture, looking at some major themes in popular culture, such as you know Westerns and cowboys or rags to riches,

looking at major issues in popular culture such as race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality.

And then really getting into the technology of pop culture and how that has influenced or changed our experiences around it. And then, as I said, towards the end, we do case studies.

And the thing I like about this is. again, as I have students starting to create their own case studies,

they now vote on which case studies to do in which ones we won't do. So there's kind of this growing collection of case studies that that students can choose from and either learned for me or from other students.

And then just within any given case study, we have the layout of kind of what to expect for that week,

Learning guide, which, as I said, they can annotate and add comments to, just kind of straight listing of activities and the reading and the learning material.

How they can get to the discussion. And then the other thing is, is each week they often had an opportunity to select

their learning materials. So usually I would give 5 to 10 learning materials and they would choose, you know, a handful, rather than just being assigned exactly what to read.

And then the weekly reflection, and an open forum for them to always kind of dropped their ideas or thoughts that weren't necessarily related to the discussion.

And then the discussions too, as I said, they were a little bit more dynamic. They're not as straightforward as as people tend to think of them as.

So in this case, you know, I had you know they would do kind of weird and zonky things.

I would say outside of the box things but it still got them to do a lot of the analysis that I was looking for. So in this case, you know, I have them as a comics evaluator,

really looking at some old comics from the 1940s and 50s and deciding if they adhere to the censorship code, the Comics Code of 1954 and if they did or didn't how they respond to that. So that's, the course, in a nutshell.

I think it's a lot of fun. It's always something that I think is a work in progress, but I hope this gives you some ideas. And if you want to learn more about it or

borrow any of the materials that have created, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. My name will be on the final inside of this. Thank you very much.
