Aaaah the never-ending wait between two series!
You don't know what to do, you get bored,
we watch the same episode over and over again,
we want fresh stuff and get frustrated!
Maybe someone already told you about the magical formula to cheat on whovian boredom:
to watch old Doctor Who.
Maybe you said "there too many of them!"
or "it's in black and white!" or "it's too slow!"
or "they'd been destroyed!".
Today, let's abandon those bias.
Classics don't deserve to be put in one basket.
So we'll guide you through some essential Classic Who episodes.
I'm sure some might interest you.
Don't worry I will explain later how to easily watch them.
Yes, Classic Who can be find easily.
Classic episodes don't have the same structure than NewWho episodes.
Most of the time it's separated in several parts, each around 25 minutes long.
Anyway, let's start with the basics.
First Doctor Who episode, with a first part introducing the universe, the Doctor and his companions,
letting us discovering how they managed to travel together in the TARDIS.
The next parts take place during prehistoric times.
These parts can seem quite boring for a neophyte,
but you can only watch the first part.
This isn't the Daleks first appearance, but it's a popular one.
A time when good old pepperpots were quite scary.
The Doctor and his companions arrive during the 22nd century,
in a ruined London invaded by Daleks.
There's even a movie adaptation with Peter Cushing as the Doctor, released in 1966.
Watch it, it's a gem.
First Cybermen episode, first regeneration,
Earth threatened by the existence of its twin planet, Mondas.
No need to say more, you should already been watching it right now.
The Doctor lands on a dystopian Earth in 2018. Yeah, 2018, guys!
Soon after they land, the Doctor escapes murderers who confuse him with
the Earth dictator that look alike the Doctor.
The Enemy of the World is a great spy story
in which Patrick Troughton, the Second Doctor, shows all his talent, twice.
And it's also my favourite Classic story.
The Doctor and his companions float in a void filled with fictional characters.
An ode to imagination and dream, beautifully written and surprising.
The less famous on this list but quite a treasure.
One of the longest episode, 10 parts, but I assure you it will captivate you.
The Doctor is stuck in a war zone subject to time fluctuations.
It is the first episode to use the term "Time Lord" and has one of the most powerful regeneration scene,
even if keeping the clown side of the Second Doctor until the end.
The Master invokes an ancient demon to take over the Earth.
It's hard to describe it as it is so curious and fascinating
but if you want to know more and don't fear spoilers
please check our Pepperpassport about it.
First multi-Doctors episode, the best one in my opinion.
The first three Doctors (Not much of the First Doctor, but he still is here)
face a deprived Time Lord in an antimatter dimension inside a black hole.
Yeah, it's epic.
The Doctor is send to Skaro to stop the creation of the Daleks.
If you should see only one Dalek episode,
it would be this one as he marked deeply the Daleks' mythology and was quoted a lot in the new show.
Hurray! The Doctor and his Time Lady companion, Romana, investigate in France on a mystery around the Mona Lisa.
City of Death is funny and catchy, and also the only one shot in France.
By the way, you can discover the Parisian shootings places in our Pepperpassport about it.
Four Doctors (+ one lost in the vortex) are trapped in Gallifrey's Death Zone.
The only exit: Rassilon's tomb.
A taste of Hunger Games and many Time Lords.
The 20th anniversary episode thinks big and will conquer your heart.
The Doctor and his companion Peri get stuck in a dark traffic in Androzani Minor's caves,
where they get exposed to a toxic substance.
The last Fifth Doctor's story and a harsh regeneration scene.
The Doctor arrives in the middle of a TV show in which planet Varos dictatorship's opponents
are being tortured and killed to entertain the population.
A cruel but fascinating story.
The Doctor is judged by the Time Lords court to have interfere too much with other planets.
Trial is unique as it is a full season, season 23 to be precise,
with a very strong link between each episode.
A singular experience closer to NewWho series than traditional Classic seasons.
The Doctor and his companion Ace go to the circus!
Not a random one. The Psychic Circus, claiming to be the greatest show in the galaxy.
Seems joyful and kid friendly.
Well it's not. You will not see the circus the same way after this.
Last Classic episode, a surprising story with cheetah people,
kitty Master and parallel dimensions,
leaving a nostalgia aftertaste when finished.
In 1996, Doctor Who came back with an often criticized TV movie
which still represent the only true trace of what Doctor Who would have looked like in the 90s and made in America.
It's a curiosity that makes a great link between the old and the new Doctor Who
and one of the easiest way to enter the Classic era if you don't feel brave enough to start it fully.
Did you find a tempting episode in this list?
Please, tell me what you think about them after you watch them.
If you already watch the Classics, feel free to recommend some episode, explaining why you think there are great for a neophyte.
To start the Classic, several options:
DVDs, of course, but as each episode costs between £5 ans £20,
it's better to buy them one at a time.
Another option: the BBC joins Twitch for two months, starting the day this video is released,
to broadcast a Doctor Who classic marathon (except a few episodes).
I put in the description the dates and times the episodes I talked about in this video are broadcasted.
And then... Well, you know what other solution to use if neither these ideas satisfy you.
Anyway, have a nice viewing! I can't wait to talk about these episodes with you. Bye!
