Fashion Jobs - Other (Non-Fashion-Design) Design Jobs & Non-Design Jobs in Fashion - Duration: 3:23.
Last week, I did a video on specializations and market segments in fashion design.
This week, I wanted to talk about job opportunities that aren't exactly fashion design, but
are other jobs that are design or are in the fashion industry.
Some of these jobs do have their own college majors or certificate programs, but they are
still career paths that are possible to transfer over to with a fashion design major.
You might have to do some extra studying, or take an internship first, but you can transfer
over to these areas from fashion design.
Other types of designers in the fashion industry include
Print Designers - they create prints and patterns to be used on fabrics and garments.
Textile Designers - they design and develop fabric structures like weaves and knits, and multi-color
pattern designs that might appear on fabric.
Trims Designers - they design buttons, trims, notions, embroideries.
Accessories Designers - they design shoes, bags, belts, and hats.
or Jewelry Designers.
Other jobs that work along side fashion designers include
Technical Designers - they ensure correct garment construction, measurements,
and materials of each sample.
They deal with fit, and revise garment details based on fit meetings with a fit model who
tries on the samples.
Pattern Makers - they draft the garment pattern piece shapes for new samples
Colorists - they create and develop color palettes for seasonal collections.
They use light boxes and spectrophotometers to approve or reject custom lab dips and swatch
samples before proceeding on to full garment samples.
They also maintain color chip and lab dip libraries.
Fun Fact, my first job out of college was as an assistant colorist for an activewear
private label company here in New York.
That was a pretty cool job, because I looked at colors all day every day.
If you enjoy a lot of color, I definitely recommend being a colorist.
Other jobs in the fashion industry can include:
Fashion Media / Fashion Journalist - they write articles about designers, trends, events,
and other fashion industry news.
Fashion Buyers - they select curated collections of seasonal clothing for normally a retail
shop or department store.
Stylists - they create a cohesive vision on the human form.
Coordinate clothes to jewelry, accessories, shoes, hair, and makeup.
This cohesive vision can be used in runway shows, photoshoots, TV, theatre, or individual private clients.
Trend Forecasters - they research past and current market trends, and predict what styles,
colors, and shapes will be in style in the upcoming seasons.
I know a few people I went to school with, as fashion design majors, that now work in
trend forecasting.
Fashion Design Teachers - they teach the art, craft, and technical skills of fashion design.
Mostly in a college setting, but there are fashion courses in some high schools as well.
I took a fashion design class in high school before applying to The Fashion Institute of Technology
here in New York.
Fashion Illustrators - they sketch clothing and other fashion designs for commercial use,
like digital art, graphic design, animations, advertising art, website art, murals, or
storyboards.
They can also help refine design ideas, especially for private label clients, and can help sketch
runway or photoshoot looks for brands to easily visualize the projected outcome of a design
presentation.
That is just a quick overview of other fashion industry jobs.
If I missed any, please feel free to add them to the comments section.
There are a lot, and this is not an exhaustive list.
Let me know below, what would be your dream job in the fashion industry if you weren't
a fashion designer, or if you didn't want to be a fashion designer.
And subscribe :)

Meghan Fashion - Meghan Markle fan gushes over her 'IDOL' - 'She changed my life' - Duration: 3:21.
Emily Sorrells, from Tampa, Florida, became friends with Meghan through social media in 2011
She went on to meet her "inspiration" in March 2016 when she watched her being interviewed on stage at AOL HQ in New York
And Ms Sorrells has described the moment she came face-to-face with Meghan in a new post on her blog
The Groucher College student said she was a "walking mound of self-doubt and anxiety" before she "found the inspiration in Meghan Markle that taught me the meaning of confidence and gave me a new definition of value for myself"
When she finally met Meghan at the event the then-actress gave her a handwritten letter
She said: "She came down from the stage to give me it and gave me the most wonderful hug I have ever received
"She went out of her way to make me feel more special than I ever thought I could deserve
"She truly values her fans and made that very clear when she sacrificed a portion of her interview for ME
"I am still astonished that she is a real life human." In the note, Meghan said she was "proud" of Ms Sorrells, calling her "delightful"
The meeting came four months before Meghan met Prince Harry when she was still starring in US legal drama Suits
Ms Sorrells added: "I will forever remember the day I met my idol and my inspiration, I will never forget all that she has done for me
"I am so grateful and happier than I have ever been in my entire life. "She has proven to me that she is, in fact, a caring and genuine human being
"She is not fake for the cameras or trying to portray something different than her real self to the media
She is just lovely. Thank you thank you thank you Meghan." Meghan built an army of dedicated fans on her social media accounts and lifestyle blog The Tig
However she closed her blog in April 2017 and shut down her social media accounts in January 2018, ahead of her royal wedding
Last October, Meghan recognised another fan during a walkabout in New Zealand with Harry on their overseas tour
The duchess spotted Hannah Sergel, who she had struck up a friendship with on Instagram, in a crowd and gave her a hug

Meghan Fashion - Meghan Markle fan Emily Sorrells reveals the actress changed her life - Duration: 4:10.
A Meghan Markle super fan has revealed how a kind gesture from the former actress changed her life for the better
Emily Sorrells, from Tampa, Florida, struck up an unlikely friendship with Meghan over social media in 2011, with the pair eventually meeting in New York City in March 2016
Prior to joining the royal family, Meghan regularly exchanged messages and even handwritten letters with the Groucher College student, calling her 'delightful' and 'inspiring'
Describing the Duchess of Sussex as her 'inspiration', Emily has penned a heartfelt tribute on her blog explaining how their friendship has changed her life
The student said she was 'walking mound of self-doubt and anxiety,' until she 'found the inspiration in Meghan Markle that taught me the meaning of confidence and gave me a new definition of value for myself'
She said that Meghan's words of encouragement had not only bolstered her confidence but inspired her to carry out humanitarian work in Costa Rica
The pair eventually came face to face when Emily went to watch her live interview at AOL HQ in New York in March 2016 - around four months before Meghan met Prince Harry for the first time - and sat on the front row
Meghan, then 34, gave the fan a special mention before walking over to give her a hug and a handwritten letter in front of the audience - causing Emily to burst into tears
In the carefully scrawled letter Meghan, who is trained in calligraphy, congratulates the young fan on her 'inspiring' humanitarian work, saying: 'I'm so proud of you
'Reflecting on their emotional meeting this week, Emily said: '[Meghan] went out of her way to make me feel more special than I ever thought I could deserve
'She truly values her fans and made that very clear when she sacrificed a portion of her interview for ME
I am still astonished that she is a real life human. 'Celebrities tend to be idolized and glorified by their fans, leading to disappointment with reality, but this is not the case with Meghan Markle
'She is a genuinely caring and wonderful human being who's positive disposition and dedication to helping others makes this world a better place each and every day
'Emily added: 'She has proven to me that she is, in fact, a caring and genuine human being
She is not fake for the cameras or trying to portray something different than her real self to the media
She is just lovely.' Meghan's touching messages of support for fan Emily Sorrells The fan has previously revealed that she has tried to contact Meghan via post at Kensington Palace, but claimed her letter was 'not accepted'
Before swapping Hollywood for Kensington Palace, Meghan regularly swapped messages with her fans
Last year she was reunited with Hannah Sergel, a young woman who confided about her health battle with Meghan before she became a royal
Hannah met the astonished Duchess of Sussex in person after she spotted her among the crowds in New Zealand during her Pacific tour

Meghan Fashion - Saudi Kingdom blamed for torturing Meghan Markle's friend in 'stark' MP report - Duration: 3:55.
MPs and lawyers said the treatment of the globally respected activist and seven other women activists could "meet the threshold for torture under international law"
The panel said they are "deeply concerned by the detention conditions" after Miss Al-Hathloul's family claimed she been subjected to electric-shock torture and threats of rape and death in a "palace of terror"
The report said "the detainees' treatment constitutes cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and could meet the threshold for torture under both Saudi Arabian and international law"
It warned that Saudi officials, even at the highest level, could be responsible for the crime of torture
Miss Al-Hathloul, 29, who once graced Vanity Fair alongside the Duchess of Sussex, is languishing in a Riyadh prison cell after being jailed for fighting for women's rights
Express.co.uk previously told how Miss Al-Hathloul is suffering inside prison. A source close to the activists told this website: "Loujain is starting to speak more and more about the torture
She is experiencing very hard post-trauma. "She is shaking and she cannot control herself sometimes
We want them to be released. But we just don't know when they will be." The Saudi Kingdom ignored a deadline set by the cross-party panel to provide help in facilitating a visit to the detainees to establish the conditions they are living in
The report noted: "The Saudi Arabian government does not welcome oversight of the detainees' condition in detention
" Miss Al-Hathloul has long battled peacefully to win Saudi women the right to drive and pushed for gender equality
Her campaigning won worldwide recognition and a huge social media following. In October, 2016, she joined Meghan Markle, British actress Emma Watson and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa for One Young World, a philanthropic youth-centred organisation
A 2017 photo in Vanity Fair showed Miss Loujain, Meghan and Mary Robinson, the former President of Ireland and poet Fatima Bhutto in front of Ottawa's Parliament Hill
And the future Duchess of Sussex shared a photograph of Miss Loujain on her Instagram page
The panel's chair, Crispin Blunt MP, warned Saudi officials could face consequences
He told Sky News: "Our conclusions are stark. "The Saudi women activist detainees have been treated so badly as to sustain an international investigation for torture
"Denied proper access to medical care, legal advice or visits from their families, their solitary confinement and mistreatment are severe enough to meet the international definition of torture
"The supervisory chain of command up to the highest levels of Saudi authority would be responsible for this
"

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton follow Queen's fashion lead with these key looks - Duration: 3:10.
Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are two of the most fashionable women on the planet but there is one woman they must bow down to - or should that be curtsy to - when it comes to style
the Queen. The 92-year-old monarch stepped out in a peach coat and matching hat on Sunday as she attended a church service in Norfolk, similar to an ensemble worn by the 37-year-old Duchess of Sussex last week on a visit to the National Theatre
She may have taken inspiration from Meghan just this once, but it's normally the duchesses who are copying their grandmother-in-law, especially when it comes to eye-popping colours
Here we look back on the occasions when the Queen of style inspired Kate and Meghan
Hot pink Winning the gold medal here is Her Majesty, who wore hot pink with black accessories first at the launch of the Queen's Baton Relay for the Commonwealth Games in 2017
Kate gets silver for her efforts when she visited Coventry for the day with Prince William in 2018
Take heart though Kate, if you're going to be a runner-up to anyone, at least it's the Queen
Red Channelling her inner Mrs Claus, the Queen enjoyed the annual Christmas Day service at Sandringham in festive red in 2015
But Meghan, teaming black with her red dress, also made the Queen's festive look work in a hot climate when she visited Tonga with Prince Harry last year
Thankfully they both opted to leave the Santa fur trim at home. Yellow The weather might have been a bit drab but sunglasses were in order with the Queen's bright yellow coat and hat at another garden party at Buck Palace in May 2017
Channelling her a year later, Meghan wore an equally bold but beautiful yellow dress at the Your Commonwealth Youth Challenge reception at Marlborough House
But who put who in the shade? Fuchsia Mum-of-three Kate couldn't pass up the opera-tunity to wear a bold Oscar de la Renta suit dress when she visited the Royal Opera House in January this year
The 37-year-old duchess, who normally goes for more subtle shades, clearly took inspiration from the Queen's flowery fuchsia number in 2017 while she was attending a State visit by the King and Queen of Spain
They both hit those high notes in style. Teal Kate and her Maj both clearly have a feel for teal
The duchess was in Emilia Wickstead again, this time visiting BBC Broadcasting House in November 2018, while the Queen was opening the National Cyber Security Centre in 2017
It's unconfirmed who leaked her outfit intel to Kate. Read More Top news stories from Mirror Online

Todoroki's College Fashion || MY HERO ACADEMIA TUTORIAL + SPEEDPAINT - Duration: 4:12.
Hello! Welcome to my first speedpaint! :)
I'm still new to this whole video thing, so I'll just be adding cc narrative of what I'm doing as a test run
Right now, I'm just adding a base layer underneath my sketch
It'll make it easier to color/paint later since I can just clip everything to make sure I don't go "outside the lines"
Tip: Set the sketch layer to multiply
After some layer management, I'm starting to lay down my base colors
You'll see here that I'm trying to shade skin tones
But I end up deleting the shading since I decided that, for this piece, I'd try using a general multiply layer for shadows instead
So here I'm just laying down all the base colors
Remember that every layer is clipped to the base layer!
I'm using the reference image for help with men's fashion but colorpicking from it turned out to be not the best idea
Here I'm just playing around with various color combos
It looks kinda flat right now, but worry not!
Me trying to figure out how I wanted to approach using multiply for shadows
As you can see, it's really pasty and ugly to just use a flat color
It was also my first time doing this technique, so I had to experiment a lot
I ended up erasing everything in favor of gradients, whoo!
This is one of the default gradients Krita offers. I just multiply it over Todoroki and adjust opacity to about 50%
Now I'm adjusting the gradient to better mimic light and shadow
As you can see, it's a lot more lively and warm compared to before!
More layer management whoo
I used a filter mask to adjust brightness/contrast
Another filter mask for general saturation/lightness
The burn filter mask is really nice to help "bass boost" the shadows
Now my favorite: Color balance!
I tend to make the shadows more blue/purple, the midtones more red/warm, and the highlights more yellow
It generally follows the gradient (which follows natural lighting)
Moar layer management
I merged everything and started adjusting levels
Now that the lineart layer is merged, the filter masks will affect it too
It wasn't really intentional on my part; I'm pretty sure I just forgot to merge it earlier
Now I'm trying out various ways to boost lighting manually
I airbrushed bright yellow via color dodge
It's pretty
Now I'm adding bounce lighting (so color dodge with cool colors in the shadow area)
As you've prolly noticed, this piece was pretty experimental in techniques
It's not all the complex, but I tried out a lot of shortcuts for lighting
I ended up implementing a lot of the same techniques in my later paintings (it was June 2018; now it's Feb 2019)
And god bless this lazy background but I love it
The piece is more or less done, minus some final rendering
I hate doing lineart, which is why I just referred to my sketch as my "lineart" layer
Now I just have to overpaint to clean up some of the sketchier parts
In later paintings, I leave the sketchy lines in to give it character
That's it; thanks for watching! :))

Speechless Season 3, Episode 13: "F-A-- FASHION 4 A-- ALL" - Duration: 10:39.
ZACHARY: Hello, hello, hello.
I am author and entrepreneur, The Cerebral Palsy Vigilante Zachary Fenell.
And any moment now, wait.
(Alarm sounds) There it is!
The spoilers warning alarm, signifying it is time for another weekly Speechless episode
review.
Today we will be discussing Speechless episode 13 of (alarm stops) season three, "F-A—FASHION 4 A—ALL."
If you have not yet seen through this episode, be warned.
Spoilers begin in five, four, three, two, one.
Reviewing "FASHION 4 ALL" is going to be difficult for me because I am going to
be tempted to drift away from what actually happened in the episode and instead talk about what
I would have had happen.
The change I would have made was keeping the entire episode contained to the Abilities
Expo.
Having been to an Abilities Expo before, I know there is a lot of subject matter to explore.
JJ and Ray could have headed off to visit the different vendors, looking to find equipment
or services that would help JJ live independently in college.
Then Dylan could have come across an inclusive sports vendor and through some competition
learn exactly how good athletes with disabilities can be.
A perfect fit for her character given her athletic nature and competitive spirit.
Instead the DiMeo siblings are not present at the Abilities Expo.
Only Maya along with Jimmy and Melanie along with Kenneth.
Maya and Melanie are there as vendors, looking to spread word of their new adaptive clothing
line.
Problems arise though when the two moms realize in the past they have had confrontations with
basically everyone there.
The rest of their screen time is used as Maya and Melanie try to prevent their past encounters
from being a po, public relations nightmare for their newfound business.
While the story contained some funny lines, like Maya being okay with not having a microphone,
SHE WILL JUST YELL.
Or, Maya stopping her online feud with a special needs mom blogger at the email request of
Internetpres1@hotmail.com, the President of the Internet, the overall arc disappointed
me.
The Abilities Expo became a vehicle to serve the characters.
Maybe I was expecting too much, but I was hoping the sh, the show would be more representative
of what the Abilities Expo is.
Again if you have the DiMeo siblings there, you can do this while having Maya and Melanie's
story play out unchanged.
Nevertheless on the plus side Dylan, JJ, and Ray were all featured in either entertaining
or compelling stories.
Entertaining best describes Dylan's storyline.
Test scores reveal Dylan is the smartest student at Lafayette.
This fact which Mr. Powers helps Dylan to accept doesn't change Dylan, but rather
only makes her more trouble.
She is even able to convince Ray to jump off the roof into a bush by stringing together
a bunch of big words.
Funny stuff!
For most of the episode though, Ray is with JJ on a college visit.
JJ gets frustrated when Ray acts more like their mom and less like a teenage brother.
After Ray follows JJ to a party in order to keep JJ safe, JJ vows "I'll be unsafe
until you leave" to which Ray responds "What does that even mean?"
Ray would quickly find out!
In an effort to show JJ that Ray could have his back and also have fun, Ray accidentally
gets drunk on vodka jell-o shots.
This leads to a role reversal where JJ has to care for Ray.
Being drunk Ray tries dismissing the help of JJ. This leads the college student JJ is with to
comment about how there is nothing worse then a guy who needs your help but refuses to take it.
This attempts to draw parallels to how earlier JJ was refusing Ray's help.
Notice I said attempts.
Personally I thought the comparison missed the mark some.
As someone with cerebral palsy, I am able to relate to people offering help because
they think you need help.
But their perception of what you need and what you ACTUALLY need, are two separate entities.
I didn't think anything Ray was trying to help JJ with was anything JJ actually
needed help with.
So JJ apologizing to Ray seemed unwarranted, at least in my opinion.
Despite missing the mark some, I still applaud Speechless (claps) for taking on the issue of learning
to accept help from someone.
"FASHION 4 ALL" succeeds at starting a conversation about learning when to accept
help.
This point alongside a fun Dilly, Dylan story arc and some humorous lines in Maya and Melanie's
Abilities Expo adventures does enough to compensate for the episode's flaws.
As such I would give Speechless season three, episode 13 "FASHION 4 ALL" a seven out
of 10.
