You gotta love places that do fusion food because you can get all sorts of

stuff in one place, so it's super convenient. Today I meant Banh Mi Boys.

They're a Vietnamese sandwich shop, but they are finding ways to incorporate

different elements of different cuisines into their food.

For the banh mi today, we

got the five-spice pork belly. The pork belly that they use in this they

braised for four hours. This is a relatively new concept for the sandwich

because you can typically find cold cuts, but they kind of wanted to put a twist

on it with the braised pork belly. The garlic mayo sauce that you would find in

the kimchi fries--that's an optional thing that you can add here, but they

highly recommend it. You have some pickled yellow radish, pickles, carrots,

cucumbers, cilantro and there's also a sauce in there called their luck sauce.

It's a hoisin-based sauce with a little bit of citrus. Now if heat is your

thing, you can definitely add that to the sandwich. You can get jalapenos, habanero

peppers or sriracha sauce on the side. Or if you're daredevil, mix all three

together and see what it does to your tongue.

Banh Mi Boys is essentially a

sandwich shop, but surprisingly, the best seller are their kimchi fries. On the

base you have their home cut fries. They add some barbecue pulled pork on top and

garlic mayo, green onions. Then on the very top it's their homemade kimchi, so

from the barbecue pulled pork, you get a nice sweet flavour and that really

contrasts well with the vinegary side of the kimchi. And if you're a vegetarian,

don't worry, you were not left out! You could also get a vegetarian version of

this dish where they add some lemongrass-braised tofu on top

The last thing that

I'm having today is the fried chicken steamed bao. So, they have the nice soft

bao, then in the centre there's a nice thick fat juicy piece of chicken.

I made that sound like extra, but it was a big fat juicy piece of chicken!

They kinda borrowed from the elements of the banh mi by adding in some pickled

carrots, cucumber, cilantro. So when you bite into it, the bao is nice

and soft and the chicken and all the carrots makes it nice and crunchy. The

thing that I really really enjoyed about this place, kinda like what I was saying

before, was the fusion. I kind of got a little bit of everything

here, so I had the Chinese-style sandwich with the bao and they borrowed from the

Vietnamese-style sandwich. The banh mi had a nice modern twist, and then of

course, the fries had a Korean twist to it. So, basically what I learned

today was fusion for the win. It'll always make you happy!
