Vegan Fashion Is The Future - Duration: 3:10.

- [Man] The start is Vegan Fashion Week,

this is the start.

(upbeat music)

- The fashion industry is one of the most

wasteful industries, and there's so much

unethical treatment.

- The fashion industry is one of the most

polluted industries in the world, after the meat industry

and after the oil industry.

So we have to find solutions that are based on plants,

like use pineapple or apple leather,

or it's mushroom leather, but of course,

it's a big problem how to make a production

and to change our habits.

- There's a lot of brands that are starting

to pay attention to the way they source their fabric,

how they develop their products, and that's

one of the reasons why I got into designing and

thinking of different fabrics and ways that I can create

something that I still enjoy and appreciate.

- Vegan fashion is not only cruelty free

but it's also extremely sustainable.

At wastedLA, we emphasize upcycled clothing

made out of unconventional materials.

- We really try to rescue products and pieces

from landfills.

- The brand Enda started with my personal journey

of becoming vegan.

We focus on alternative materials for leather and fur,

we try to minimize all the paper waste that we create

during the process, the fabrics, the alloy plastics.

- My brand is called Mistohn.

Most of the fabrics that we use are organic.

I hope that this vegan fashion week is able

to inspire every designer, even people, patrons,

who just wanna be around fashion.

- Luxury fashion is so connected with animal derived

materials, so it's hard to break the pattern.

- The future of fashion has to change,

it has to be ethical to people, it has to

take care of the planet, and the water and the air,

it has to be compassionate.

It has to rethink the mode of production.

- The very first vegan fashion week,

it really shows that we're ready to start

moving in that direction for more sustainable clothes.

We're ready to show the world that vegan fashion

or sustainable fashion is high fashion.

- I never wanted to do things and make it be like,

okay well this is vegan specifically,

I rather you just know that this is something

that is really cool and it happens to be cruelty free.

I think cruelty free fashion I'd actually like to see

that label transform, or transcend into just

fashion across the board.

It's very important to start somewhere, you know,

and I think the start is vegan fashion week,

this is the start.

-You have been here before.

Obviously, you've done a ton of talk shows.

But you had for what I believe for you is the crown jewel.

You did a talk show recently that you've long wanted to do.

-Yeah, it was the crown jewel, but I kind of blew it.

-You blew it? -Yeah.

So, my brother and I are diehard Steve Harvey fans.

-The best. -The best.

-He's the best. -And so funny.

-Yeah. -And so, I got invited

to do his daytime show.

But I didn't want to do his daytime show and just --

I was doing "Mummy" press.

I didn't want to just talk about "Mummy" and the workouts.

I'm next to Steve Harvey. -Yeah.

-So I thought, "You know what?

Let's do a bit, and let's do a makeover.

-Right. -You know, I'm a bad dresser.

I know what those shows --

let's do a full-on Steve Harvey makeover.

-Right, which is something they do.

-And he's great at it. -Yeah.

-I saw it today on TV. He did one.

-Yeah. -So my brother and I talked.

I'm like, "Dan, come with me. We'll do the makeover.

It'll be great."

We pitched the producer. She was like, "Yeah, sure."

I'm like, "Yeah, great! Let's really do this!"

And so they go, "Awesome."

And they said, "So, show up to work."

And I'm like, "Great." I'm like, "Is Steve into it?"

And they're like, "Steve's good with it."

So they said, "Show up in, you know, how you dress."

You know, that you would need a makeover.

Now, if I'm gonna really do TV,

I'm always gonna dress up a little bit.

-Yeah. -I'm not an utter maniac.

-Right. -But if I'm gonna do

a makeover show, you know, I'm gonna dress poorly.

-Yeah. Give him more room to make you over.

-To make me over. -You're doing them a favor.

-Yeah. Seth, what happened was, it was cut.

[ Laughter ]

This really happened, and it was really awful.

So, in my head, it was a bit that I thought

Steve was with me on,

but I never talked to Steve about it.

-Right.

-So, I get to "The Steve Harvey Show,"

and I'm wearing cut-off corduroys,

flip-flops, a sweatshirt.

I feel weird about it. -Yeah.

[ Laughter ]

-I should not be on TV in those clothes.

-Yeah. [ Laughter ]

-But for the makeover, it makes sense.

-Yeah. -I'm walking backstage,

and my brother's like, "This is gonna go great.

This is gonna be perfect." I'm like, "Oh, yeah.

I feel great. We're gonna meet Steve Harvey."

We meet Steve, and about 3 minutes before we go on TV,

and the producer tells us that Steve has not heard the pitch.

-So this is the first --

-He doesn't know we're doing a makeover.

So he meets me, and they go, "Steve, this is Jake Johnson,"

and he goes...

[ Laughter ]

But this is backstage.

And he goes, "You know you're gonna be on TV, son."

[ Laughter ]

And I go, "Yeah, I need a makeover."

And he's like, "Young man, you're wearing flip-flops."

[ Laughter ]

And I was like, "Yeah, I know. And you're Steve Harvey."

And he goes, "All right."

[ Laughter ]

He walks on, I'm in a living nightmare.

I want out. -Yeah.

-I change my mind. Throw any suit on me.

I'll just talk about the movie.

"Three, two, one. Jake, walk out."

So I'm walking out, and as soon I come out,

Steve goes like, "Again, what are you wearing?"

[ Laughter ]

And then he goes, "What do you think Tom Cruise

is gonna say if you show up to the premiere like this?"

And what I wanted to say is, "I'm not an idiot!"

[ Laughter ]

I would never dress the way I'm dressing!"

I wanted to be like, "Steve, I've made a mistake."

[ Laughter ]

"This was a stupid bit."

So, he kills me. It does not go great.

-Yeah.

-He's really surprised I'm dressed this way.

Then there's the break where I get styled.

-Okay, so commercial break, they go back,

they do the makeover? -They have a guy

who's gonna dress me in a Steve Harvey-type outfit.

-Yeah. -My brother's backstage.

I keep waiting for someone to tell me like,

"No, it's going good."

[ Laughter ] You know?

It felt like it was going bad, but I was waiting.

-Yeah. -I didn't get that, Seth.

The person's styling, and I go, "What do you think?

Is Steve like this a lot?"

And the guy goes, "Steve's really nice.

He doesn't like you."

[ Laughter ]

So I'm like, "Cool. That's all right, cool."

So I put the suit on.

My brother and I have a talk where my brother says,

"Realistically, what are our options?"

And I was like, "Well, I go out there,

I get egg on my face, Steve Harvey hates us,

and then it ends,

or I'm the biggest coward, and we just run."

-Yeah. [ Laughter ]

-And we talked it out. We're like, "We can't run."

And so, I'm standing behind the booth.

The old photo of me. -Yep.

-Which is the, you know, cords or whatever.

They brought my brother onstage.

My brother, who's not in this business,

is freaking out. -Sure.

-I can see him next to Steve, he's going like...

[ Laughter ]

He's thinking, Steve Harvey is about to murder his brother.

And he wouldn't know where to be in terms of loyalty.

-Yeah. [ Laughter ]

"I'm with you, Steve!" -He'd be like, "Get him, Steve!

I'm sorry Jake, but it's Steve Harvey!"

So the curtain comes on.

I honestly don't know Steve's reaction.

Steve gives me the big clap.

So, he likes the makeover. We're in a money zone.

My favorite part of it is that my brother,

while I'm getting this applause, just loses his mind.

So Steve's going like this.

I'm doing the, you know, makeover complete.

And my brother's going, "Yeah!"

[ Laughter ]

-We actually do have a clip.

-Jake, come on out.

Fashion, you gotta have the fashion mastered, you know what I mean, like I said

the Kangos, the Clark Wallabies, before the Clark Wallabies and the Kangos it was

Adidas and Pumas and Pro Keds, mock necks, silver medallions and stuff like that.

But then the Bronx moved on... Well not really Brooklyn too, you know with the

Jamaican, the Clark Wallabees, and the whole suit pants and the slacks and the shirt,

it was just like a mature look so it looked good on a young person cause you

know you look better when you young trying to look old then if you're old trying to

look old, you know. So it looks slick to see a young kid wearing shoes and slacks and dress

shirts with a you know a little stylish piece of jewelry here and there, and a little Kango

and a little glasses to sell yourself.

Soul clubs were always great places you could

dress up, you could... They were...

I mean punk started, I'd hate to break it to you because punk's a very political

scene but the initial punk scene in London was a load of bored soul boys who

liked dressing up and that's pretty much what I was at the age of 14, is a kind

of bored soul boy that liked dressing up...

You were a 14-year-old bored soul boy?

Let me talk you through the look: it was a peroxide wedge

with a black underneath, pegged trousers,

rubber sandals and a mohair, mohair jumper. I mean that whole kind of early punk thing the

mohair jumpers and stuff was a kind of throwback from the from the soul

scene and as I said you could go to those things without fear obviously you

ran the risk of being beaten up on your way to the club but once you're in the

club you were quite, you were quite safe.

We made music, we lived in squats but

I never dressed really like a punk I always had this end of 70s kind of

dressing style and people always like... The punks were also very square they were

like, "Oh look how you look you look like a secretary or some kind of like..." So I

never really felt 100% punk because they are also very square so.

When I started to run this shop on the King's Road, Chelsea, called Acme Attractions,

which funnily enough again going back to how important scenes are, back in my day

shops were these kind of cultural centers where fashion and new music

movements did emerge. And on the King´s Road there was two shops, Acme

Attractions and the shop owned by a guy called Vivienne... A woman called Vivienne Westwood and

Malcolm McLaren, I'm sure you're familiar with and these were the two places that

all the kind of hip young people that were looking for something else

gravitated towards. Now in Vivian and Malcolm's shop they were a bit more

Eurocentric. In my shop dub reggae all day long and what was interesting is

that pulled in as many of the customers as the clothes did in fact probably more

We hooked up with a lot of guys in the art world and we just became a one so

you know the idea of me developing the clothes with the music really worked

hand in hand and I wasn't trying to be a designer at that time but I was just

trying to make functional wear. And the idea of the Funki Dread on our

shirts because the dances that we used to do was so... Like so many people would

be there that people could identify with the people that were running it. Then

people wanted to buy the shirts, then I had to go back to the guys in the

warehouse to find out how would I make these shirts and manufacturing and we

ended up drawing our own sketches and making up our own t-shirts and it was

more lucrative than the music business because a t-shirt was like nothing, you know?

In the 80s like shows, fashion shows would have themes you know so you would

have like the Navy theme, you would have like you know Technicolor theme, whatever

so people would like I have one track for a theme then fade it out than have another

theme. It was super... It was quite childish you know, it was like a school

play or something like that. And then in the 90s people realize you...

They had to be more focused you know so it was... A collection was about one idea

this is what I feel like and one kind of music and the whole thing. The shows

became much shorter. They used to be like 45 minutes up to an hour, like in

the 80s I've seen shows that were like an hour and 15 minutes long so

you have time to do basically everything you know. You can do, file your nails, order

a pizza, whatever. And now it's just... Go see a fashion show it's like, it's

like watching a video clip more or less, you know. So it's... We're trying to be as

focused as a video clip because yeah you have to get it like within the first

45 seconds.

Once I found out about Dapper Dan, that was a whole new

universe, you know what I mean? I went to see Dap and I walked up in the spot

and I was like, "Yo, man, let me get one of those, one of those, one of those,"

and that right there kind of helped the fashion thing, too, man.

I think our music spoke a little louder than what we

was wearin', because it was more forward, man.

The clothes back then you know people was wearing them it wasn't that big it

is... You know fashion today and how much the little kids want to get with what

everybody's wearing today. Back then it was just you know you got it you got it,

if you don't you had an other hot thing, if not, you know I mean?

I learned a lot [by looking at] what American influencers are doing in term of images.

I like Nicki Minaj's body, her Barbie face. Perfect characteristics. I really like it.

And thank God, it's a big responsibility because

I linked my image to my music. In Angola I am a trendsetter.

If I have long hair, red or yellow, this will become fashionable.

If my lipstick is pink, this will become fashionable.

In the streets, vendors were calling out, "Come and buy Titica's lipstick. Come buy Titica's trousers." This is great.

three dolls we have echo we got Aspen and Izzy now something really cool and

unique about these dolls that Veronica thinks is hilarious is you can pop off

their hair style them differently so now so now Aspen has blue hair and I go can

have blond hair and we can change it up or and put on blonde hair and EKKO can

be a brunette so it's super cool and fun if you have the different dolls you can

mix and match and mix and match the outfits too

we're very excited to download the app and style our dolls and do some extra

fun stuff our girls are in their new outfits

we got from echo there's her maxi dress in her sandals echo is in her new outfit

with Izzy's hair huqin all mixed up he managed got her fancy boots and Izzy

has Aspen's hair and her new outfit and running shoes and also I think they look

super cool without any hair as well if got this really edgy fun look so we love
