Hello my name is SJ van Zyl

I am a portrait and beauty photographer from Cape Town

My Journey in Photography started when I studied graphic design

During my studies, I realize that I was more interested in creating images and doing photography

than what I was doing graphic design

That jump started my interest

I started studied makeup design after that

I incooperated those skills into creating the images that we are now creating today

I tried to copy a lot of different photographers that I was following

and I realize that even though I was nailing the technical aspects of the photos

they weren't making me happy and it wasn't feeding my creative soul and spirit

So, what happened I packed away all my studio lights and I went back to natural light

I started learning every I could learn about natural light

And I shot like that for a very long time

and it was when I was doing this that I stopped looking like other photographers

and embracing natural light that my work came alive

That is also about the time that I bought my Fujifilm

and the magic of the colors and the contrast that I got with that camera was beautiful

So, I will say my style of photography at the moment is portrait base but it is a timeless look to it

It's not studio heavy, it's very soft feathered like

I will say the closes thing I can properly compare it to is the work of Annie Leibovitz, Sue Bryce

I think the most important thing I've learned on my journey as a photographer is that

you are only as good as the team that you work with

and that includes your model your hair stylist and your makeup artist, and if you are lucky a stylist as well

Makeup and hair is such an integral part of photography in capturing your subject

so and I think the fact that I am a makeup artist myself

and I have a background in that helps me to visualize what I want for my photoshoot

OK, we just finished our first look which was our beautiful and innocent soft look

now we are moving towards a little bit more edgy a little bit more vampy kind of look for our second look

So, it's that balance between good and evil which I think will come through quite nicely

I fell in love with Fujifilm as soon as I lay my hands on one of the cameras 2 years ago

And the reason why I love Fuji so much

it's the first time I shot with a camera

where the contrast, colors even in a jpeg format when I open it blew me away

It was the first time I did not have to do a lot of tweaking

and it was the closest to what I was seeing in my viewfinder

to what it was when I opened it on my computer

It also has a lot of tweaks that I love

a live viewfinder so when you are changing settings

you can see what is happening with your image in live view mode

And that saves you a lot of time

So, when you're changing your shutter speed or your ISO your F-stop

You can see all of that changing in real time on your viewfinder

And also, when if you are someone like me who cannot see when you manual focus as well as you should

there is lovely little tools where they highlight the areas that are being focused on in manual mode

You don't need like a microscope to see if something isn't focused by turning you know your focal point

So, I think that makes a massive difference for me

The team that is involved behind Fujifilm

the support that you receive as a photographer from them is amazing

And It's the first time in my life that I feel I'm part of a family

and that they are there looking out for me as a photographer

And actively promoting me and supporting me and teaching me a lot of new things

And the knowledge and experience that I have gained from this is immeasurable

From the outside looking in, it may look like fashion influencers simply take pretty pictures

and go about their day.

Nothing could be more untrue, top influencers work on their brand fiercely and tirelessly.

Our cover model Rochelle Johnson makes it look easy but she shares some great insight

with us this month.

Your style is impeccable.

Have you always been a "fashion girl"?

I don't consider myself a "fashion girl" but I have always loved getting dressed no

matter what size I was.

I've been every size from 16-24 and I never lost my passion for fashion.

How did you get started in the fashion industry?

I started working in retail while I was in college, Lane Bryant and Neiman Marcus, and

really started to love the retail business.

After graduating with a marketing degree I wanted to get into fashion merchandising but

couldn't find work doing that.

Instagram is where it all started.

I still remember my first style post (ouch)!

What lessons did you learn along the way to becoming a top influencer?

Know your worth without thinking too highly of yourself; there's a balance.

I think we all have a place and a voice but I think whether you have 5K or 300K followers,

there is always someone doing it better… so don't play yourself.

Be humble.

I've also learned that if you want to be successful you have to sow success.

When we support each other we all win!

I love to cheer on other influencers when amazing things happen to them and I feel so

much pride to be in the same community.

How would you describe your job to someone?

Just because it's not the traditional 9-5 job, doesn't make it any less of one.

My work consists… of a bunch of brainstorming and then coming up with content ideas and

putting all of these into a schedule, writing blog posts, styling outfits, shooting and

editing photos, responding to emails from companies and arranging work, replying to

readers, managing social media, and sometimes doing website tweaks and maintenance.

What is the most challenging part of your career?

Creating content that adds value.

I think a lot about what I post and who I work with.

You can't just throw anything out there because it's a reflection of you and your

brand.

Staying consistent.

You can't just go with the flow and go a month without shooting content.

You always have to be thinking about what's coming up.

I'm in the mode of shooting content all the time so it's part of my life.

But I'm not going to act like it's not hard, because it is!

I love how you have incorporated your son Creed into your career so seamlessly… what

are your tips to other moms interested in doing the same.

A lot of people have been on this journey with me and of course they would want to see

him growing up and I don't mind sharing.

I also enjoy dressing him so I think that including Creed's style is just another

aspect of my brand… also doesn't hurt that he's so cute.

The influencer game is very competitive how do you stay focused?

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Everyone says this but it's so so true!

Don't even try to compare yourself to someone else.

It's like comparing apples to oranges.

You don't know where someone has come from or what they did to get to where they are

now.

I remember looking at someone's page and admiring something amazing they were doing

and I said to myself why wasn't that me?

But I instantly realized that it wasn't for me… at least not right now and that's

okay.

What are your tips for women interesting in taking their blog or brand to the next level?

Be consistent, be intentional and be determined.

Consistent because your followers will get to know you quicker and learn what to expect

from you.

Intentional because your "why" will keep you going when the likes stop.

If you don't love it, you won't be able to keep it up.

Be determined because most people give up right at the time where things are about to

get better.

Just in: Meghan Markleis officially a trendsetter. In honor of her engagement, the bride-to-be appeared at Kensington Palace arm-in-arm with Prince Harry to pose for their official photos.

She wore a white wrap coat from the Canadian brand, Line the Label, an emerald P.A.R.O.S.H dress and nude pumps from Aquazzura.  Shortly after, Line the Labels site crashed as the world rushed to get the Suits actress outerwear.  According to Meghans ensemble, white is a go-to hue no matter the time of year, and everyone, including celebrities, agrees.

Since then, the white wrap coat has made an impact on celebrity street style. Weve seen it in a number of ways on multiple celebs, officially making it a trend to watch.

Promoting her new film, A Wrinkle in Time, Reese Witherspoon wore the trending outerwear to her Good Morning America appearance. She paired her Max Mara Alacre Coat, which retails for $3,990, with black suede ankle boots, beanie and sunglasses.

Like Meghan, her coat is slightly oversized, but features a belt to accentuate her waistline. Hers is bit longer, however, which makes it more ideal for cold weather.

Danai Gurira is also a big fan of the white coat. She worn similar coat to Meghans, but added a hood for a personal twist.

The Black Panther star paired her outerwear with black pants, pumps and a structural two-toned bag. But, she was also spotted with the same coat over an asymmetrical dress with blush-toned heels. Both ensembles brought attention to the Walking Dead stars style. .

Heidi Klum also followed suit, but ditched the belt for an oversized look. The star paired her fuzzy white coat with leather pants and white ankle boots to travel from LAX airport. Comfortable and chic, its clearly a must-have.
