I used to sit at home with an acoustic guitar and a
Sony Walkman and I would write the songs that way
and I wrote the songs that way all the way through the "Stars" album.
He'd strum on the guitar a few chrods
and he'd sing the melody and from the melody the rest of us would grasp ideas
that he would listen to and he would challenge and we would change as he challenged.
Some of these songs were just great. You could tell right away
that they were gonna be great records.
The way to tell a good song is
to if you can strip it right down to the very bare bones with the melody, the
lyrics, and very basic chords, and if it still engages you and you feel so
emotional from it and you want to listen to it, then you know you've got a great shot.
I was trying right from a certain amount of reality with a little
bit of artistic license thrown in.

As good as these tracks were, it was down to him selling them in the end and I
think he made it a hit.
I know that we were in the top five biggest selling albums in
British musical history: makes you kinda go, "Jesus."

I just have this abiding faith in the music and the performance that will
shine through when I'm dead and gone, and and I don't really care about the
contemporary side of it because I'm trying to make music that will last for
a long time.
