The United States says it will continue its diplomatic efforts to denuclearize North Korea,...

despite news that its pointman on the regime is retiring.

This comes amid heightened hopes for U.S.-North Korea talks following South Korea's successful

hosting of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Park Soyun reports.

The announcement came just as signs were emerging that Pyongyang may be willing to talk to Washington.

The U.S. special representative for North Korea policy Joseph Yun says he will step

down from his post at the end of this week.

He said the decision was entirely his own,... but the timing comes at a surprising juncture,...

as South Korea recently relayed that North Korea is open to direct discussions with the

United States.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson sought to dissuade him, but reluctantly accepted

Yun's resignation "with regret."

Yun, like Tillerson, is an advocate of engaging in dialogue with Pyongyang --- a tricky position

to take amid the Trump's administration's policy of applying maximum pressure over engagement.

Joseph Yun's diplomatic career spans more than three decades, serving as Ambassador

to Malaysia from 2013 to 2016 under then-President Barack Obama.

Yun played a key role in tackling North Korea's nuclear issues as the U.S. special representative

for North Korea, appointed by the Obama Administration in October 2016.

He also played an instrumental role in releasing Otto Warmbier, an American student detained

in North Korea for more than a year.

Yun's authority to negotiate with North Korea appeared to be undermined by a tug-of-war

between the White House and the State Department over the direction of North Korea policy under

the Trump administration.

However, Yun told the Washington Post that his retirement was not a decision based on

policy differences with President Trump or his inner circle.

He added that he's 'very hopeful' about the prospect of talks resolving the standoff over

North Korea's nuclear program.

Nevertheless,... his departure will leave the Trump administration without an envoy

for engaging North Korea or an ambassador in Seoul, a spot that has been vacant for

a year.

The Treasury Department of the United State of America says it has added two individuals and seven organizations in Nigeria and other Africa nations and Asia connected to Islamic State to its sanctions list for global terrorism.

The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in a statement on its website said it had added leader of Boko Haram, Abu Musab Al-Barnawi of Nigeria and Mahad Moalim of Somalia, and seven groups from Bangladesh, Egypt, the Philippines, Somalia, Nigeria and Tunisia to its sanctions list, Reuters reports.

"These designations are part of a larger comprehensive plan to defeat ISIS that, in coordination with the 75-member global coalition to defeat ISIS, has made significant progress toward that goal," the statement said, using a common abbreviation for Islamic State.

This effort "is destroying ISIS in its safe havens, denying its ability to recruit foreign terrorist fighters, stifling its financial resources, negating the false propaganda it disseminates over the internet and social media, and helping to stabilize liberated areas in Iraq and Syria so the displaced can return to their homes and begin to rebuild their lives" , the statement added.

Meanwhile, we had reported that a total of 1,127 persons, including women and children held under the captivity of Boko Haram insurgents from different parts of the Lake Chad region have been rescued by troops of the Nigerian military.

we gathered that Onyema Nwachukwu, the spokesman of the counterinsurgency efforts in the northeast Nigeria, otherwise known as Operation Lafiya Dole, dosclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, February 27.

An Open Letter to President Trump and Members of the United States Congress on Gun Violence - Duration: 2:22.

I'm Father Michael Sheeran, the president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.

This is an open letter to President Trump and the members of Congress.

Our grief and solemn prayers are with the victims, the families,

the friends of our sisters and brothers in Parkland, Florida.

Ours is a national tragedy. Yet we have hope because we have watched in admiration and awe

as the poised articulate young survivors of the Parkland massacre have beseeched adults

to fix this plague of gun violence in America. It is not lost on us that none

of them were even born when the Columbine High killings in Littleton, Colorado

claimed 13 lives. And yet the shootings have gone on and on.

We adults have repeatedly failed to fix this singularly American phenomenon.

Now we must listen to our youth. We must not cruelly disparage them in this time of trauma and grief and anger.

As Pope Francis has said, "Dear young people, do not bury your talents, the gifts that God has given you.

Do not be afraid to dream of great things."

Ending the horrific mass killings in our schools and streets is a great thing we are all called to do.

Now we urge you, as President and Members of Congress,

to listen and to fix this indeed.

The Little Guy about the US school shootings - Duration: 1:47.

Today, Senne is going to give a presentation about his holiday.

Right, Senne?

Last week, I went to Disney World in Florida.

A bit cooler than an indoor playground. Right, Billy?

I pity that boring vacation you had.

There are approximately 20 million people in Florida.

Compared to last week, however, there are 17 people less,

because there was, once again, a school shooting.

It was already the 18th shooting at a school in the US.

This year.

And me, I am being punished for accidently smashing a window?

That really puts things in perspective, doesn't it, Miss?

In Florida, they're now processing this in their own American way.

They've already completed phase 1:

expressing collective outrage.

Now they've entered phase 2:

the call for change.

Just a few more days, and then we enter phase 3:

Doing nothing and waiting for the next idiot with a gun.

That's what people call a vicious circle.

Like the love life of Miss Evelyn.

Your new boyfriend isn't much of a prize, huh.

He's just as big a loser as all your former loser flings.

Fortunately, we live in Belgium.

Here, you can't just buy a gun and shoot people at a school.

Yes, Adil, I know what you're going to say...

Belgium has Barco and FN Herstal,

who build guns and weapon systems

used to blow up entire schools in the Middle East.

We're being hypocrites if we criticize the American weapon policy.

But those aren't Western kids, Adil.

Our mommies and daddies don't care as much, then.

Might I suggest we continue with the lesson now?

Billy needs it.

Otherwise, he'll never be able to end 4th grade.

Except with a machine gun.

Thank you for your attention.

Thank you, Senne.

S. Korea urges U.S. & N. Korea to lower bar for dialogue - Duration: 13:02.

And to tell us more about the chances of us seeing talks between the U.S. and North Korea,

as well as what role South Korea should play in order to keep up the Olympics-inspired

detente,...

Professor Shin Sang-hyup from Kyung Hee University joins us in the studio today.

Welcome to the program.

It's great to be here.

1- So it looks like North Korea and the U.S. could have talks after all.

What can we expect on this front?

2- But then U.S. President Donald Trump expressed a willingness to talk with

North Korea (QUOTE) "only under the right conditions."

What does he mean by the "right conditions"?

3- Last week though, Trump warned of a 'very rough' 'Phase Two' against North Korea if

new sanctions don't work.

What can we make of such warnings ahead of possible talks between the U.S. and North

Korea?

4- President Moon has said that the U.S. must lower its bar for dialogue while North Korea

must signal that denuclearization is on the agenda.

How did the two sides respond to this?

5- Then what are the chances that we may see North Korea demand an easing of sanctions

from the United States in order to come to the table for talks?

6- So while a lot is up in the air... what kind of role should the South Korean government

take in order to keep up the momentum?

7- Now, Seoul and Washington are scheduled to start joint military drills in April,...

and President Moon is hoping to get the United States and North Korea to make progress in

denuclearization talks before the drills.

8- But then we heard that Joseph Yun,... a top U.S. envoy on North Korea,... will be

retiring at the end of this week.

This is quite big news considering that Yun was widely seen as having a crucial role to

play in any future negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea.

9- With the U.S. and North Korea

still quite far apart on the terms under which they would be ready to talk to each other,...

what strategies or countermeasures should the South Korean government have in place

for all possible scenarios?

Thank you

for your insight today.

Thank you.
