around 1700 migrants have arrived at the Mexican border city of pedras Negri's
across from Texas hoping for passage to the United States through the Eagle Pass
border crossing buses helped transport the group of migrants to temporary
shelter in the city where medics are on site doing checkups and tents are set up
for food previous Caravan stopped at the border city of Tijuana seeking to cross
into California this is the first time a large group of migrants from a caravan
now hopes to cross into Texas Border Patrol agents set up tonight along the
border as a caravan of roughly 2,000 people will attempt to seek asylum an
Eagle Pass right now they're just a few yards away and that's where we find
Eyewitness News reporter jaleesa irizarry live from Eagle Pass with the
very latest jaleesa yeah that's right we're actually at Shelby Park right now
and this park is actually closed to the general public for safety reasons it's
actually just a few yards away from the Mexican border this is the Rio Grande
right here Mexico just a few yards away the bridge behind me that's the bridge
that connects Mexico to the US border and as you can see behind me there are
also patrol officers the border patrol officers all along this Parkway and
because of this caravan there has been an increase in law enforcement in this
area we've seen a large presence of customs Border Patrol and a number of
DPS state troopers the mayor of Eagle Pass tells us they will likely have up
to a hundred more state troopers in the area than they usually have as this
situation plays out this caravan is of mostly Central American migrants looking
to t seek political asylum as the mayor of Eagle Pass says he wouldn't be
surprised if this situation is brought up at the State of the Union tonight the
mayor says Eagle Pass does not need a wall what it needs is more funding to
better the technology used at the port of entries there has been you know drugs
or illegals that have crossed through the ports of entry this is not a
situation where we're seeing a majority mass invasion of daily people that are
crossing on the on the riverbanks on into on into US soil
now we did ask the mayor if you were able to speak to the President of the
United States what he would say he would invite him out here he said come on down
to Eagle Pass and see what we're dealing with for yourself
we're alive in Eagle Pass jaleesa irizarry Ken's 5 Eyewitness News today's
big story federal agents flooding Eagle passes nearly 2,000 migrants arrived to
the border town of Piedras Negras right next door it comes on the same day as
president Trump's second State of the Union address tiffany Huertas has been
in Eagle Pass all day long she joins us now live from more with more Tiffany
Ursula tonight law enforcement is all over Eagle Pass just take a look behind
me this is right next to the port of entry you can see Border Patrol DPS and
local law enforcement no clear answer tonight what will happen to the migrant
Caravan waiting next door there is petroleum going on at all times through
through the area so it's just a little heavier today then
the mayor of Eagle Pass Ramsey canto took us around this golf course along
the Rio Grande where law enforcement has taken over the city of Piedras Negras is
just a few feet away but in order to enter the country legally you must pass
through one of the ports of entry which is tightly secured with CBP officers the
port of entry can process anywhere between 12 to 15 cases per day can do
says there is no telling how long it will be until those 18 hundred people
who are seeking asylum are processed you know what has been assured to us by
our federal agencies is if the individuals are granted asylum they of
course are transported out of Eagle Pass they are not so they do not stay here in
this community so there is a process for them to be transported to a detention
center do you know I mean as you you can see it's not something that ultimately
is going to make a difference he wants a comprehensive immigration reform and a
more comprehensive way of assuring that our ports of entries which is where the
largest percentage of you know whether it be drugs whether it be situations of
illegals that are crossing day to day on on a daily basis through our to our
ports Eagle Pass resident Charles Akbar says a wall is not the answer either our
board of law is not gonna help is this is something that they've been
fighting with for decades now and it's not going to change this because you
could have a wall this is the common scene exercises like this are being
conducted at the port of entries here along the border tonight we spoke with
the Guatemalan consul in Del Rio who tells us in that migrant caravan about
200 people are from Guatemala and they're staying tonight in pia designate
us reporting from Eagle Pass Tiffany what fest case that 12 News just a quick
set up this is the shelter beyond this fence where the two thousand plus
migrants that began a trek from Honduras on January 15th have ended up we are on
the border with Texas just a couple of miles up to the Rio Grande River across
from that Eagle Pass Texas but this police force the show of force that
you're seeing behind me is a bit of a containment law enforcement selling us
trying to keep the migrants who may realize now that they've gotten to their
final destination and they're being kept inside for security purposes law
enforcement says their own along with the communities and the lawyer the the
mayor here says it's to also keep them from going freely across the Rio Grande
because it is a very porous River without a lot of wall or fencing along
that area and they're concerned about that another factor bill that plays into
what we're seeing in terms of security is that the governor of this Mexican
state while we love his name is Miguel Riquelme he told me in an interview last
night in Spanish that his intention is to go through the 2000 migrants that you
see inside this fence on the other side here is to see those that did not
register for the year-long temporary asylum but have come here illegally into
Mexico will be taken into custody and deported
possibly as soon as today he said immediately listen to this sound by
please government we are seen if tomorrow the immigration Institute can
come and work through all the papers and those done that don't have the right to
be here to return immediately them to their place of
so the folks you're seeing here really just waking up in the last hour getting
fed because the community giving them shelter food and necessities like health
care but many of them learning that they could be possibly on the short list for
deportation the police force out here keeping security kitchens are rising a
little bit here bill Grif watch it for us thanks Mexican side of the border
gripped Jenkins in the border battle tonight a caravan of 1600 Central
American migrants just arriving at a Mexican border city ran outside of Texas
the group described as asylum seekers homeland security saying tonight this
lawless caravan as they put it would not be allowed in
president Trump often calming the situation at the border a crisis and
immigration becoming a big talking point at tonight's State of the Union so what
are the numbers really show who's really crossing illegally into Arizona ABC 15
investigators so did wasps who went to Yuma to find out Border Patrol agents we
spoke to say they've caught just over 78,000 people who've crossed into
Arizona illegally since January 2018 these illegal immigrants have been
climbing and jumping off the border wall they've been digging holes under the
fence and crawling into the United States agents tell me the vast majority
of those people are families and recently there has been a 20 percent
spike in unaccompanied minors but agents say sometimes they do catch convicted
criminals among the crowds that individual could be a sex offender could
be a murderer that includes 64 sex offenders mostly convicted child
molesters and some rapists caught in 2018 all these sex offenders were
previously removed from the u.s. after their convictions agents say they're
trying to sneak back in illegally that's not someone we want in our country no
ma'am those aren't the only criminals agents
here in Arizona are catching the numbers include 14 people accused of murder
attempted murder and manslaughter then there's the gang members we counted
at least 29 crossing into Arizona since the beginning of 2018 majority of them
claiming to be or having tattoos linked to ms-13 ms-13 is one of the most
heinous gangs that is in America right now
drugs are by far the biggest problem at the border 450
drug smugglers arrested by agents in Arizona in the last 13 months from a
child as young as 12 with meth strapped onto her body to an elderly man who was
79 but in a twist you might not expect we noted that most of the drug dealers
Border Patrol agents are stopping are actually US citizens not illegal
immigrants I don't think that they understand how well and how trained our
agents are Border Patrol agents charged with the job of making these arrests say
while the numbers are just a fraction of the people seeking a better life every
one of these arrests is significant what I tell people is it only takes one it
only takes one for us to lose our lives it only takes one to have a family
member to lose one of their most wanted people ages tell me the actual number of
criminals they're catching could be higher than what we've reported there
about a month behind on their count because of the government shutdown so
Numazu ABC 15 Arizona 1700 Central American migrants arrived at the Mexican
border city of Piedras Negras on its way to the US the governor of Mexico's
Quayle estate says the migrants arrived on 49 buses late Sunday and are still
waiting to enter through Eagle Pass but the US Department of Homeland Security
says those with a caravan will not be allowed in Border Patrol agents are on
the bridge connecting Mexico and the u.s. they have riot gear and shields in
case they're needed a shelter has been set up for the migrants at an onions
factory on the Mexican side Mexican officials say the group includes 46
unaccompanied minors between the ages of 15 and 17 right now nearly 1700 Central
American migrants are in the Mexican border city of PMS Negros across from
Eagle Pass an improvised shelter is set up for the migrants at an unused Mackay
Nevada factory the co real estate governor says they arrive Sunday on 49
buses Channel Five's kristen bond pricing and
angela vargas are on their way to Eagle Pass they join us from the road Angela
where you all at right now
well as you know Oscar we are 5 the valley is 5 hours away from Eagle Pass
right now we are in freer Texas which is just the halfway point we're about two
and a half hours away as you can see Christian is driving right now and we
are away right now but the road is pretty clear is not much taking place
I'm gonna actually show you what the road looks like right here right now if
you guys can see that if it doesn't shake here a little bit this is all hand
held right now but we're on our way to Eagle Pass right now and what we do
see out here what we have been doing on our way there is calling different
agencies Customs and Border Protection the city of Eagle Pass as well as the
Maverick County Sheriff's Office now we did speak with the Maverick County
Sheriff Tom server about what has taken place there he says that his deputies
are on standby as well as other counties around standby to help them out in case
of this caravan I'm coming up right now good he told us he actually visited the
people that are staying at that shelter and Piedras Negras dress across from the
border that he says there's about 100 108 1800 people that are there mostly
from Honduras they said they have other destinations
that are planned out like they want to go to Minnesota and to Arizona that's
one of the destinations they want to go to but right now we are still on our way
over there we did call some other people we know other people are on their way to
Eagle Pass as well some people that are focusing on humanitarian efforts and
we're gonna get more information as it becomes available to you on our journey
here and more information as we get there show
you the atmosphere what it's like there and what agencies are doing as far as
the caravan coming through so reporting on our way to Eagle Pass Christian bomb
pricing is right here in the driver's seat and we'll be taking turns on our
way there Angela Vargas Channel five News at six Channel five News reached
out to DPS lieutenant Johnny Adnan this he tells us Border Patrol will be taking
the lead in Eagle Pass the Pentagon is sending more than 3,000 additional
active duty US soldiers to the southern border they will be installing wire
between ports of entry and providing support to Customs and Border Protection
the move comes as the president continues to threaten a national
emergency to get his border wall President Trump says he'll make a
decision soon on whether to declare an emergency
having dangerous criminals off the streets the Border Patrol agents in Casa
Grande busting a convicted sex offender and an ms-13 gang member the agency
posting this tweet announcing the arrests and separate incidents near that
Pinal County City both men have been on the radar of authorities before and
neither of them call the u.s. home listen to this an ms-13 gang member is
under arrest this morning accused of murdering a man on a New York City
subway platform cut him right in the face another times all caught on camera
in broad daylight police say it started as a fight between rival gang members
kyla Mameluke from our affiliate new york is live outside the subway station
in Queens with more Kaylin
right Steven Ainsley good morning yeah the NYPD believe
this morning and all outside for those two other suspects they believe were
also involved in this violent attack all three of these men police believe are
ms-13 gang members now a gang brawl like you mentioned is what police believe
sparked this violent attack on the seven train it spilled out onto the platform
right here in Jackson Heights Queens there was a struggle for a gun
eventually police say five to six shots rang out killing 20 year olds Abel mo so
Abel mo so is a known member of the 18th Street gang which is a rival gang of
ms-13 of the man in custody this morning Ramiro Gutierrez is a known member of
ms-13 he was actually out on bail at the time of this attack he was being accused
of plotting a burglary in Kew Gardens which isn't too far from here he was
also accused of plotting to beat two men with metal pipes that speaks to a much
bigger issue here in Queens late as of late in the recent months
we've been seeing more and more ms-13 and a lot of gang activity here in
Queens the Chief of Detectives Dermot che telling us they've been seeing a big
rise in ms-13 here they say that specifically here in
Jackson Heights and Queens where this attack this wouldn't have happened in
just in a few months ago as of recently we saw ms-13 in Suffolk County on Long
Island which is about 60 miles east of where we are right now so that's
certainly been coming in to the community that is the very latest here
in Jackson Heights Queens I'll send it back over to you guys
fatal something shooting in Queens a suspect is in custody this morning a
fight leading to Sunday's shooting in Jackson Heights was caught on video
police say they've arrested the accused gunman Ramiro Gutierrez and allege ms-13
gang member the victim Abel Musa was pronounced dead at the scene now police
are searching for two men wanted for questioning in the attack at the 90th
Street Elmhurst Avenue Station
the last of three gang members from ms-13 put guilty Friday to using
Facebook to lure victim to Maryland where he was drowned and then stabbed
repeatedly with a machete court papers show that back in October when Arnold
granados Vasquez Narus Moreno Martinez and Jose Melendez
Riviera kidnapped and murdered hortie Mejia whom they believed to be a member
of a rival gang Melendez Rivera faces up to life in prison the other two
defendants are also facing prison time
3,700 more US troops are heading to the border the Pentagon announced today
those troops will help put up 150 miles of concertina wire meantime materials to
build a levee border wall will ship south as soon as Monday our border
reporter Oscar Morgan explains the wall project coming to the Rio Grande Valley
in this border brief border wall construction
heavy materials for a border wall will soon be arriving to the texas-mexico
border according to a recent announcement by Customs and Border
Protection CBP awarded two contracts with Galveston based company SLS in late
2018 for a combined 312 million dollars to build a total of 14 miles of levee
wall in Otago County the money for this project was appropriated by Congress
last fiscal year the levee wall is expected to resemble the existing wall
in the area which is topped with 18 feet tall steel bollard
in a news release CBP said the equipment will be utilized for construction on
federally owned land they added that the project is on schedule to begin
construction this month that's your mor debrief I'm Oscar Morgan
reporting well Border Patrol agents rescued two men who were trying to enter
the US illegally from Guatemala it happened on Saturday in hebbronville
just after midnight one of the two men called 9-1-1 after getting lost in the
brush agents took both men to a Laredo hospital to be treated for dehydration
before taking them in for processing
jo21 savage whose real name is sha Yu bin Abraham Joseph was arrested in
Atlanta hours before the Superbowl Sunday
according to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency the rapper
was actually born in Britain and has been living in the US without
documentation since his visa expired more than a decade ago I called it a
targeted operation and says the 26 year old is also a convicted felon he is now
facing deportation the agency says 21 Savage is known as a hometown hero in
Atlanta performing around the city and donating school supplies and uniforms to
local kids he's teamed up with post Malone and cardi B and earned two Grammy
nominations
his lawyer says he is a role model to young people in Atlanta and across the
country and they are working to get him out of detention as soon as possible
yes immigration officials arrested rapper 21 Savage in Atlanta this morning
his real name is Shea abhiyan Abraham Joseph
officials say the British citizen entered the US illegally in 2005 but did
not leave the US when his visa expired in 2006 he was convicted on felony drug
charges in 2014 deportation proceedings are underway
Abraham Joseph has nominated for two awards at next week's Grammy Awards he
is up for two Grammy Awards but instead of preparing for his moment in the
spotlight rapper 21 savage is in custody after he was detained by ice the arrests
coming s is surprised to many since the rapper has long claimed Atlanta as his
home but ice claims he is a UK national with an expired visa
and in 2014 was arrested on drug charges Alvin Lopez walks us through how this
all that up to his arrest over the weekend
yeah Jeff that 2014 arrest stemming from a traffic stop in Old Fourth Ward in
Atlanta and according to the police report 21 savage was a passenger in the
front seat of that car now people on our Facebook page are wondering if his visa
had already expired at that point why wasn't he detained by ice right then and
there and here's what caught my attention now take a look at the
incident report it shows when one of the officers asked the rapper for his ID
he said he quote did not have it according to the report instead he just
gave the officer his name and date of birth the report indicates officers
asked both him and the driver to step out of the car searched it and found a
mason jar with 22.6 grams of marijuana two loaded guns and a bottle with 89
pills of hydrocodone 21 Savage was then taken to jail on criminal charges
you know I says the rapper was convicted in that case and we asked for a copy of
those court records but the Fulton County District Attorney's Office says
the case is now sealed so we can't independently confirm whether there was
a conviction or not now we also asked why the drug arrest
wasn't on Isis radar until now officials say they didn't realize his immigration
status and so after his but coming up at six we'll tell you why
the rapper's attorney says that's not the case all right Elwin a lot of people
following this one really closely thank you
Atlanta B grammy-nominated rapper twenty one savage was arrested in Atlanta early
Sunday by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement aka ice I was not expecting
that apparently Savage is a citizen of the
United Kingdom not the ATL as he had us all believed now the agency alleges that
he entered the US legally in July 2005 but his visa expired in July 2006 so I
guess he had one two three four five six seven eight pounds in his bank account
his shoot is in redhead Muscat rapper 21 Savage has had yet another run-in with
the law ice agents took the atlanta-based rapper
into custody yesterday and now he faces potential deportation from the United
States customs agents say 21 savage was born in the UK and was brought to
America as a teenager but overstayed his visa the rapper previously claims he was
born in Atlanta for British media outlets say his birth certificate says
he was born in a borough of London rapper 21 Savage was supposed to perform
in Gainesville at the end of the month but an arrest by ice may be putting the
ice on those plants w UF T's Cristina Schuler joins us now after speaking with
those who bought tickets and one of the organizations behind the concert those
who bought tickets tell me they were stunned and confused when they saw the
headlines the issue now at hand is that no one is that no one C no one seems
what comes next organizations were unable to give me
clear answers but one thing is for clear those who bought tickets want answers
they don't just detain people who did sane people grammy-nominated rapper 21
savage is in custody over claims of being in the u.s. without a valid visa
the rapper whose birth name is Shia bin Abraham Joseph was scheduled to perform
at the University of Florida on February 27th but now the question remains will
those who bought tickets get to see him at all yes I'll be disappointed I would
be definitely disappointed UF's Black Student Union and student government
worked together to make this concert possible
now BSU's assistant secretary says they're working together to address the
situation being a part of this decision can feel like a lot but we are
well-equipped so you know handle these situations and come out with the best
decision the performer was set to highlight Black History Month but now
possibly faces deportation originally it was believed he was from Atlanta though
new reports say otherwise disappointing fans and those from Georgia I was
thinking like I did reach out to UF student government as well
representatives for the rap artist so far no one has returned my calls it's
unclear if refunds will be issued or if 21 Savage will still come to Gainesville
at all I think you can ask any Border Patrol agent here that has been around
from one year to 30 years as myself and they'll tell you that this is a crisis
this is part of the ongoing border security and humanitarian crisis that we
have currently along our southern border it's an ongoing crisis we've been
dealing with it for decades it's an unstable situation that impacts Public
Safety and this is the worst crisis that I've seen you actually will use that
word crisis yes the asinine idea that these politicians spout out that our
borders here there's not a crisis here it's absolutely insulting to the people
to actually live down here we have to get the word out that we have a crisis
down here
now this Fox News Alert on a big announcement the Pentagon sending nearly
four thousand more US troops to the southern border to try to ramp up
security as thousands of Central American migrants are less than 300
miles from the Texas border Grif Jenkins is traveling with that group he joins us
live from Saltillo Mexico so Grif what are you seeing on the ground who is
helping these migrants get to the border you know John it's the Mexican state
governments in this case while wila is helping them behind me is literally the
gate where the nearly 2,000 maybe more than 2,000 migrants that began their
journey on January 15th in San Pedro Sula Honduras are making the final last
leg these officials these police officers and community workers putting
them on dozens of buses we were told there were 50 buses driving them that
final 300 miles to Piedras Negras which is the city immediately across the US
border from Eagle Pass Texas Border Patrol obviously is aware of it they say
they're making preparations but many of these migrants have told us their
intention is to cross illegally one of them that told us about his flight was
Antonio here's what he had to say Wednesday getting in the States
my idea is well my place were hired for five years in there and make my family
feel better actually looking for better things for my family
now when they get to Piedras Negras it's anybody's guess what will happen but
they're on their way they should be there by the end of today John so what
happens next what happens when they get to the border well in Piedras Negras
they've got facilities set up and they will get federal government support you
know this new Mexican President Lopez Obrador has been very Pro emigrant he
had the fast-track work visa they capped it it became too full at 12,600 but
these migrants will get federal resources on the border town of Peterson
ingress the Mexican officials here the Secretary to the state of whoa Allah
says his hope is that the u.s. will process asylum claims much faster John
roof Jenkins traveling with that migrant caravan in Mexico Thank You the Pentagon
sending more than 3700 troops to the border they're tasked with addressing
another 150 miles of concertina wire their troops will also provide other
support for a Customs and Border Protection including mobile surveillance
according to the military times this brings the total number of active duty
troops on the border to 4350 welcome back the Pentagon is deploying an
additional 3700 troops to the us-mexico border this comes on the heels of
another possible government shutdown stemming from the president Trump's
demand for 5.7 billion dollars for a border wall this mission will support
border patrol with mobile surveillance news for two sons Janelle Kahn Fair is
live from Nogales and has the latest update Danelle while priscilla troops
will install about a hundred and fifty miles of barbed wire throughout the
fencing between each port of entry now the Defense Department says the
additions will bring the total number of active duty forces on the border to
about 4400 troops the additional personnel will be deployed for 90 days
there's no word yet on how many of them will be in Arizona we talked with the
Nogales mayor and got his reaction on increased barbed wire and more troops
the troops I don't have any concern the wires make us feel okay because we have
a wall right and I don't care how much money they
invest in the the Congress and the president and and both houses in
Washington know Gauss is not going to get any of that money because we have a
long we've had it for 20 30 years my concern now is that concertina wire
we're trying to build a business for any community the mayor went on to say that
he will draft a letter hoping to change government's mind in the Trump
administration also coming up at 4:00 we talked with someone who's Pro wall and
get their opinion on the barbed wire reporting live from Nogales City Hall's
uno con fair news for Tucson president Trump's comments on immigrations comes
as a large number of federal state and local law enforcement officers patrol
the border of Eagle Pass that's because a caravan of caravan of Central
Americans currently in the Mexican border city of Piedras Negras the nine
teams tiffany Huertas joins us live with the reaction from president Trump's push
for that wall Tiffany Steve EC's tonight residents here in Eagle Pass have strong
feelings about President Donald Trump's a vision and border approach but first I
want to show you what the scene looks like here on the border tonight you can
see those lights that's law enforcement different agencies are here along the
border in Eagle Pass now during his speech President Trump mentioned the
arrival of migrants to border cities Piedras Negras the area of the border
opposite to Eagle Pass is one of those many of the migrants traveled on bus
provided by Mexico people who live in Eagle Pass had strong thoughts about
border security and the current situation Mexico right now it's kind of
tough they've had their problems the wall we needed I believe in Trump and
whatever he said we need have I'm behind him yes you don't like to to be honest
II know there's other people so people see it it is a solution I
don't really see it but because you know there's always ways around it I'm there
over it or just goats in their case as we've purported many Central Americans
are leaving their country because of the violence and poverty and seeking asylum
now the ports of entry remain open tonight and from our contacts in Piedras
Negras the migrant caravan remains at the temporary shelter over there Steve
ECEs back to you a tragedy on the water now nearly 30 Haitians are killed when
their boat sank in the Caribbean the US Embassy in Haiti says this was a human
trafficking operation local 10 News reported well Corneille is live in
little haiti with the latest Drought and people here in Miami's Little Haiti
neighborhood have been on the phone some of them at least trying to figure out
the identities of the people involved meanwhile also here a Catholic Church
holding a special service in honor of those victims a special prayer tonight
in the heart of Little Haiti for the 28 lives lost at sea life in Haiti is not
easy father Yuri Jules and leading the Sunday night
service at notre-dame de Haiti Catholic Church where parishioners here have a
growing worry over the yet to be revealed names of those found in the
water my family which part of Haiti that ill-fated boat departed from is crucial
we know on Saturday the vessel filled with Haitians sinks several miles off
the coast of the Bahamas more than a dozen survivors were plucked from the
water by rescuers and taken back to dry land but then more bodies started to
wash ashore and by late today 28 people were found dead presumably after
drowning at sea we used to say looking for life lose life they were looking for
life in bed Ella pastor Jewell says life in Haiti has gone from bad to worse
recently because the value of the country's currency has dropped sharply
putting essential staples like rice out of reach for many Haitians
unfortunately for Haiti for my Asian brothers and sisters we pray that in the
future the situation of Haitian may be change the reality of the 17 survivors
of that fil journey means they'll likely be sent back to Haiti each now being
detained by the Bahamian government and today the US Embassy in Haiti tweeting
out a message saying that no journey is worth risking lives over urging people
to not complete these dangerous missions that often end in tragedy we also know
tonight that the search and rescue mission is continuing off the coast of
the Bahamas just in case that there are more victims out there reporting live
from Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood I'm to Rockland a local 10 News tragedy
at sea a boat carrying dozens of Haitian migrants sinking near the Bahamas a
prayer service held tonight in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood and CBS 4s
amber Diaz is there live amber good evening to you both yes in church
members tell me one of their biggest fears that they have tonight is that
some of their relatives may have been on that boat that sunk on coastal waters
just before dawn on Saturday many of them wanting to come to the United
States for a better life these men were rescued Saturday from the waters off the
coast of the Bahamas and taken into police custody
a total of 17 survived while 28 others died authorities say they were traveling
in a boat from Haiti when it began to sink people who live on Abaco island
called authorities after finding some of them floating in the ocean they were
looking for life a better life the devastating event brought over a
hundred people through the doors of the notre-dame de Haiti Catholic Church for
an evening ceremony
many broken-down but lifted up in prayer we pray that individual distribution
operation may be chance and so far this year the Royal Bahamas Defense Force has
arrested at least 300 people for trying to get here into the United States in
Little Haiti amber di cbs4 news tonight heavy
machinery including a hydraulic excavator and workers arriving at Benson
State Park this is video we captured this morning showing a bulldozer atop
the levee where the proposed border wall is expected to be built on Friday CBP
sent out a press release announcing the arrival of the heavy machinery as early
as today the release also states the equipment will be used on the
construction for the wall on federally owned land together we can break decades
of political stalemate the president offering unity in his State of the Union
speech but he drew a hard line on border security tonight our tennis reporter
Anthony Perez here and Anthony the president arguably faced a very tough
national crowd tonight that's right the speech delivered after the longest
government shutdown in history so the expert I spoke with says the president
took a more conciliatory tone but still stayed on message President Trump spoke
not only to a divided chamber but a divided country really America is
divided in a lot of different ways we watched the State of the Union
address with 10 News political analyst Wendy Patrick this is an opportunity for
him to talk about a lot of issues that unite us victory is not winning for our
party victory is winning for our country the president started off the night with
that tone of unity but eventually focused on one of the most polarizing
issues of his presidency now is the time for Congress to show the world that
America is committed to ending illegal immigration and doubled down on his
promise to build a wall San Diego used to have the most illegal border
crossings in our country in response a strong
security wall was put in place this powerful barrier almost completely ended
illegal crossings simply put walls work and walls save lives the president
cannot deliver a State of the Union speech that does not at least in some
significant portion play to his face he has to hit the tough issues that got him
elected in the first place trying to fund the wall was what led to a 35 days
shutdown stalemate with Congress Stacey Abrams gave the formal response to the
president's address she made sure to remind the country of the possibility of
another shutdown making livelihoods of our federal
workers upon for political games is a disgrace the shutdown was a stunt
engineered by the President of the United States if you're living in San
Diego and you're recently coming off the government shutdown having been a
furloughed employee you are looking for some encouragement that he will not ever
do that again they didn't get that from the president tonight but Patrick thinks
that has more to do with the president never wanting to show his cards and
February 15th is the day we're all watching now Congress needs to reach a
deal by then or we could be dealing with another shutdown guys well as president
Trump pushed for a border wall tonight Border Patrol agents are on high alert a
new migrant caravan has just arrived at the Texas border about two thousand
migrants have reached Piedras Negras just across from Eagle Pass
that's where Eyewitness News reporter jaleesa irizarry joins us tonight
the Sun is setting on day one of the Border Patrol's response to the caravan
and what we've seen is an increase in law enforcement we're actually just a
few feet away from the Mexican border this is the real Grande right here
Border Patrol officers were out here all day today
on boat patrolling the area and the bridge right behind me that connects
Mexico to the US border officers were out there as well preparing for anything
officers in riot gear spent the afternoon on the bridge that connects
Mexico in the u.s. performing drills a caravan of 2,000 migrants arrived in the
bordering Mexican town of via thousand dead gas on Monday the migrants are
expected to seek political asylum in the United States through Eagle Pass a
border town that often only sees about a couple dozen asylum seekers a day so if
we're looking at 1800 people that are seeking political asylum we're talking
about six months of work a lot of time and technology that mayor Ramsey English
gone through says they don't have con to says it's not a wall that they need here
in Eagle Pass its funding to get better technology for their port of entries
there has been you know drugs or illegals that have crossed through the
ports of entry this is not a situation where we're seeing mass invasion of
daily people that are crossing on the riverbanks on into US soil we don't know
if when or how the caravan will attempt to make its way to the US border but
customs Border Patrol and DPS state troopers are preparing for anything
reporting in Eagle Pass I'm jaleesa irizarry well we were here just a few
months ago when troops were installing those first coils of concertina wire
right on top of portions of the border wall but take a look now it looks a
whole lot different than it did just a few months ago you can see those coils
of wire from top to bottom really on this section of the one person
perspective we're not too far from the deccan simi port of entry now this
change it's something that no Valles mayor Arturo Garino says that he is
completely against now just yesterday he told us that he met with some of his
staff he said that they talked about sending drafted letters to different US
congressmen and Congresswomen as well as the state governor and really anybody
who they can get in contact with about how big their
CERN is over this added wire concertina wire is not as safe it's a lethal wire
it's not barbed wire and but it was on top of the fence and you probably live
with it now the mayor also added that this wire is impacting the people who
live here in Nogales as well he says that they're afraid of the perception
that other people will have of their city they're also afraid of the impact
it could have on businesses here now we also did reach out to US Customs and
Border Protection we did get a statement from a spokesperson with them that said
in part quote CBP continues to monitor the situation regarding several caravans
migrating from Central America toward the US border we continually assess the
capabilities of our facilities throughout the southwest border and have
been making and will continue to make necessary preparations these do include
participating in operational readiness exercises as well as the mobilization of
resources as needed to ensure the facilitation of lawful trade and travel
now that same CBP spokesperson that we talked to you said that when troops
first got here just a few months ago and started putting up some of that wire it
was always in their plan to add more it just so happened that it took them a
little bit longer for now reporting live in Nogales Veronica Costa Hagan 9 on
your side police say he promised to help people become US citizens turned out he
was a fraud a man arrested accused of operating without a license while taking
thousands from Central Florida immigrants new 6 reporter James barbero
joins us with details from Brevard County police the FDLE and homeland
security alleging 36 year old John Eustace is a fake immigration attorney
preying on migrants he told he could help become US citizens for somebody to
take advantage of them that's very disheartening police say a Rockledge
client came forward in August concern Eustace might not be operating
legitimately at this office on cogswell Street a neighboring business says the
service is advertised here have changed multiple times from immigration help to
a learning driving school just a couple of weeks ago came up tax preparation
police say Eustace also at office in Orlando and here on Lipscomb Street
in Palm Bay where he was arrested at this location a woman who says she's
another of Eustis victims claims he took $4,000 from her and never provided
service the song really saw Calvin Mack on the other hand says he went to use
this to do his taxes and he did get what he paid for he's disappointed to learn
how police say Eustace was conducting business with other clients people for
helping that do you like that take advantage of you investigators with a
warning for anyone hiring an immigration attorney definitely do the research and
their homework to try to figure out who they're working with
yeah be we're saying people did everywhere that's a fact in Brevard
County I'm James spar Varo getting results new six well the federal
government is also taking the lead with a wall in the Rio Grande Valley if
you're at home a grand henna woman says she doesn't worry too much about
migrants or caravans who cross into the u.s.
she says living near the border fence hasn't changed much in her life Channel
Five's Frank McCaffrey reached out to Customs and Border Protection to see one
defense behind her home is going to be expanded the 76 year old was born and
raised in granja now she tells us she's watched people crossed the border her
whole life she's never felt she was in danger Aurora Garcia tells us ten years
ago crews installed a fence right in her backyard it's property her father owned
and handed down to her I live about 80 feet from the border fence I've measured
it she says she's noticed that this border fence has been a slight deterrent
for immigrants crossing into the u.s. however she's also noticed that they
find there's always ways around it I imagine it deters some but it ends half
a mile from here so all you have to do is go around it if you want to
we've seen ladders in the proximity she still sees illegal immigrants on a
regular basis she does not know what expansion plans are for the wall and
ground hey no nor does she care much she doesn't worry about the people who cross
it's my aging-in-place home if you will so no if I felt in any way in danger I
would not be living here we reached out to customs and border protection
headquarters in Washington DC a spokesperson for the group Carlos Diaz
says he cannot comment on the expansion project for the wall in grande know at
this time Garcia says her only concern is that the wall expansion does not harm
the environment at her aging-in-place home in the Channel five News studio
Frank McCaffrey Channel five News at six
the trial against a pilot accused of smuggling people into the country is
expected to get underway today jury selection in the case against Louis
Luton was supposed to start last month that's now expected to happen today
homeland security investigators say they caught Luton with four Central Americans
at the Mid Valley Airport in November authorities say he was on his way to
Houston this spring is the first time all daca students are paying higher
college tuition here in Arizona 9 on your side's ivan Rodriguez examines the
impact on the students and pima community college 16 states offer
in-state tuition to emigrants protected by the deferred action for childhood
arrivals program or daca by state legislative action Arizona on the other
hand is one of six states that does not give dock of students in-state tuition
so one of the things that made the situation uncertain is there was no
clear rule across the US right different states and different colleges and
universities made their own decisions based upon federal law and their own
states law jeff Silva and his general counsel - pima Community College he says
this spring is the first semester all daca students are paying out-of-state
tuition since the college began offering in-state tuition in 2013 believe it was
the summer of 2013 the state attorney general's office filed suit against
Maricopa Community College seeking a determination
from the court what is the correct interpretation of the law in 2014 at the
trial court level in Maricopa that Judge sides with Maricopa Community College
Sylvan says Pima and Maricopa continued offering in-state tuition after that
ruling until it was reversed by the Court of Appeals and set in stone by the
Arizona Supreme Court PCC says this decision is the reason last daca
students are enrolling in their college they say two years ago there were 170
students this spring 88 and the difference in tuition rates so at Pima
College right now it's 82 dollars and 50 cents per credit hour that's the
resident tuition rate but the non-resident tuition rate is three
hundred and three dollars per credit hour starts more than three times the
cost if you're not a resident Sylvan says the state Supreme Court left open
the possibility of the state legislature amending the law the only other option
for change in Arizona would be through Congress or a federal court decision
ivan Rodriguez Kagan 9 on your side was struck by a vehicle while assisting DPS
during a traffic stop and tonight special report Ariana Guzman shows us
how u.s. Border Patrol chaplains help agents cope with trauma after witnessing
devastating events like this one was a 16 year u.s. Border Patrol veteran on
Saturday her life was taken away by a driver who failed to obey the Texas move
over or slow down law this is only one of many things
agents witnessed every day while on duty
he took a fall and ended up separating his shoulder so that agent has been sent
to the hospital to get medical medically evaluated and treated so agents have
been punched kicked you know sometimes a struggle actually ensues during the
attempted apprehension so it can become a very dangerous situation because the
majority of the time unfortunately the agents are outnumbered Danny Martinez is
a u.s. Border Patrol agent and chaplain his job is to secure the border while
helping other agents spiritually we're always seeing people are stressing out
especially with this past furlough there's a lot of anxiety stress out
financially so we're there to provide that support not only to the agents but
to their family members as well or agents trying to work we do a lot of
shift work and chef works affects each and every one of us differently
according to the International Association of Chief of Police there are
more suicide cases from law enforcement agents including Border Patrol than
debts on duty experts say depression and
post-traumatic stress disorders are leading factors to suicide from family
death to relationship problems Martinez says he's here to assist agents
struggling with mental health we're back up for our coworkers are Border Patrol
agents or they're in case something happens to them
we don't solicit they reach out to us and we could help them out spiritually
where we're the ones who point or were the ones who direct them to where they
they need to go they need assistance a clinician we refer them to EAP and EAP
can set him up for the psychologists precondition Martinez adds agents are
still fully capable of doing their job while seeking emotional support unless
otherwise stated by a psychologist but we're notified to go and reach out to
such agent he could be in the hospital we go and we offer our support spiritual
if they want prayer prayer or just simply the Ministry of presence just
being there for the brother makes a major difference and we also reach out
to the wives family members who ever need assistance where the
for chaplains seeing their team back on their feet is top priority the most
rewarding part of our job is seeing that agent being able to function back to
normal levels the way he was before he went through something traumatic the
hardest part is when you see them struggling knowing that you're there for
them but it's just gonna take time for them to you in Edinburgh I'm Jonah
Guzman local 23 News chaplains must be ordained ministers or get certified
training every year with quarterly training on stress anxiety and trauma
