Angela Brown: What is a business reboot and why do you need it?
That's an excellent question, and we're going to talk about that today.
Hi, there. I'm Angela Brown and this is Ask A House Cleaner.
This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question,
and I get to help you find an answer.
Now today's show is brought to us by HouseCleaning360.com
That's a hub that connects house cleaners with homeowners.
When homeowners call me, and they say,
"Hey, do you know a house cleaner that can come clean my house?"
I say, "Yes, go to HouseCleaning360.com"
When they go there are they going to find you?
That's the question.
Run on over there and set up a business listing if you haven't already.
There are paid and free versions.
The free version gets you in the database, so people can find you.
The paid version has a lot more features, so that you can pretty much set up your own
whole website where you can collect ratings and reviews with all the information about
your business, and pictures, and videos, and all that stuff.
It's like having your own website on HouseCleaning360 where people can find you, and then there's a story
that you tell, right, so HouseCleaning360.com
All right, so today the questions are multiple questions that have come in.
People want to know hey, I'm burned out.
How do I keep going when there is nothing left to give?
I'm so overwhelmed in my business that I just want to hang up the towel and call it quits.
What do I do?
Other house cleaners are just really frustrated.
They're like, I hate my team.
None of us are getting along right now.
It's just craziness.
How do you resolve all this?
Okay, so I'm going to call this a business reboot.
There comes a time in your business where you need to just clear the slate, right?
That's what a business reboot is all about.
Now in my company we have a lot of computers.
We actually have a media hub in my computer.
When you come in at the first thing in the morning you can check your email if you like.
All the computers are set up.
They all have internet access.
They all have different pieces of software on them.
You can check and return emails.
There are people that do things for the business, and social media, and all that stuff.
But every single day we have to do what's called flush DNS.
Don't ask me what it means, but it means if the computer is clunky, and slow, and it's
saved a lot of cookies, and websites, and stuff got stuck in outer space, it will flush
all that out, and it starts everything over again.
We do that every single day.
There's another thing we do called IP configuration reset.
What that is a little code that you type in the computer.
I don't really know what it means other than again, it resets everything.
Okay, so it's not important that we know the details.
It's just important to know that if you want the computers to go fast this is what you do.
Okay, so if you want your business to go fast, and efficient, and productive, and happy
you got to have a reboot.
And so, just like the computer where everything gets bogged down, and it goes slowly, if you
don't have a reboot personally and professionally your business will end up the same way, all right.
A business reboot needs to happen once a month.
Now in house cleaning I know you understand the concept of a deep clean.
You can do a regular maintenance clean every single week.
And maybe once every six months, or once a year you're going to go in and do a thorough
deep clean, which is just like rebooting the computer, okay.
We're going to do the same thing for your business.
It's a business deep clean, but instead of firing everybody, and just clearing house,
what you're going to do is just as the business owner you're going to take the day off.
This is not a vacation.
This is a day off.
This is a day where maybe you have a cancellation, and it's not planned.
And so, you're not demanded to be at five houses today, okay.
If you have some time take the time off.
I'm serious about this.
Take the time off.
Mark it off like ah, today's a reboot day.
In my company we actually schedule reboot days in advance.
I know when they're coming up, and I can plan my exit towards that because if everything
starts colliding on me, and it gets really overwhelming hey, on Wednesday I'm going to
have a reboot day.
If I can just plow through until Wednesday then everything will be fine.
Now on the reboot day here's what I'm giving you permission to do.
This is a day where you don't delve into the depths of your business.
This is a day where you sleep in, or maybe you take a three hour nap.
This is a day where you do your laundry, and your grocery shopping, and you restocked your pantry.
This might be a day where you write Thank You Cards to your friends and family for birthday
gifts that they give you, or clients that give you tips.
This is a day where you take care of the personal end of you.
You clear all the cobwebs out of your own head, so that when you bounce back tomorrow
you're coming back with renewed vigor and enthusiasm, so that you can do your job properly.
Now without a reboot it's easy, and it's very hard for house cleaners, so listen to this.
It's very hard for house cleaners to take a reboot today because we got bills to pay, okay?
We've got clients that are expecting us.
And so, if you have clients on the schedule it's easy just to plow through and go, I'm
working six days a week.
I have two or three clients a day.
I don't have the chance to take a day off, and then you never schedule a day off.
If you have a customer that goes out of town and they cancel clear that whole day,
clear that whole day, so that you can just sit there and watch a Hallmark movie.
You can have a cup of tea.
You can go to the mall and sit in those massage chairs and get your feet, or your neck massaged.
You can just do something fun that is completely unrelated to your business.
And then when you come back you're like, oh man, that was a great little, ah relax.
Now you're ready to go back into the game again, right.
No one can keep going at full pace all the time, it's impossible.
What happens is your immune system breaks down because it's not sustainable.
And then you start getting agitated.
You start getting irritable.
And then you start doing things that normally you wouldn't do like maybe instead of sleeping
at night you drink an extra cup of coffee, so you can stay up later to answer customer
complaints, or to work on your social media, or to do other things that the business demands.
And so, you start taking less care of yourself.
When you don't take care of yourself it affects your business, and your family life,
and it affects you.
Then you start snapping at your kids, or your spouse.
And then they become less friendly because now you're all just fighting with each other.
That's not the environment that you want to go back into business with.
So, you need a reboot day.
And your business needs a reboot day.
The business, believe it or not, is going to continue on for a day without you.
Sometimes the business is actually healthier having a day without you, right.
I don't mean to be ugly, or anything, but there are times that I've gone out of town
and when I get back in town my husband really misses me like, "Oh my goodness, I was so
hungry while you were gone because no one fixed my meals and the laundry piled up.
I was lonely, and all these things," right.
And then I'm like, "Wow, I should go out of town more often."
Okay, well the same thing happens with your business.
When you take a reboot day it resets everything and then when you come back everything goes
much more smoothly, much faster, and much quicker, and much more effective, and everybody
has a new frame of mind.
That is the reason that you need a reboot day.
I don't know what your reboot day is.
If you want you can plug it up to your biorhythms.
I know we talked about biorhythms before.
I don't want to harp on it.
It's not that I'm obsessed by it, but it's mathematics.
This is based on trigonometry.
You plug your birthday in.
In fact, I'll leave links in the show notes to the app that I use.
I think it's called Biorhythm-365.
It's a free app.
It will show you on a scale how you're doing today.
Are you intellectually smart?
Are you physically okay?
Are you emotionally having a really down day, and you're just going to cry?
It will tell you.
And then you're like, oh wow, I'm having sensitivities today.
You can give people the heads up, right.
If you're headed towards one of those really dark dives, holy cow take a reboot day.
And when you come back and nobody got hurt everything is just exactly how you left it
and you can continue on with your life like nothing happened.
It's like flushing the DNS of your business, all righty.
I hope that helped a little bit.
I hate to see house cleaners in burn out mode because it's so easy to do.
I do understand and I feel your pain.
All right, if you found this helpful please pass it on to a friend.
We can all help each other out by sharing.
Until we meet again,
leave the world a cleaner place then when you found it.
