So in kite the first thing to understand is the wind. Where it comes from, how it feels

then use it as an energy and feel the kite.

I've taken a small kite for you. A 6 meters. I will inflate it

- Almost every outfit I fell in love with.

- I loved the bell bottoms.

- The sexy flowy dresses.

- The accessories, the shoes.

- My name's Judy Gellman,

I'm a costume designer on American Woman.

This decade was full of a variety of costumes

and a real change in the United States

in just about every way.

When I first had meetings we'd talked about

certain iconic things from that time period

and one of them was a dress that Farrah Fawcett

wore to the Academy Awards, this amazing metallic piece.

So I looked all over and all of a sudden

I turn and here is this.

(upbeat disco music)

This came from a desire to have Alicia's character

step out of her safe world where

she pretty much dressed for her husband.

- You look fantastic, is that a new dress?

- I got it today.

- I like the color.

- Bonnie Nolan is a very loud, wild woman

but she is also incredibly glamorous.

She really gets to spend her time

shopping for the perfect dress

and that might be the extent of her day

and then the excitement would be for her husband

to come home and him to see her in that dress.

All of that's going to change, exciting things happen

and her whole world gets turned upside down.

(upbeat disco music)

- Something like this was for a very special occasion.

It wasn't just an evening gown that others would wear.

It's something a little bit unusual and very special.

There are like a million bugle beads sewn onto this fabric.

This kind of treatment was done a lot in the 40's

with the big movie stars.

It's kind of fitting that Alicia's character

would have worn something like this

in her I guess, her coming out party.

She enters the party with this very

I'm going to conquer all of this attitude.

It was important to show that she wasn't

going to be beaten down by adversity.

That it was hard for her, it was difficult for her,

and she wasn't sure how she was going to make it through.

But, she still was a sexy little thing

and she wanted the world to be aware

that she was her own person.

A period show requires more time and more research too.

You never know where you're gonna find some gem.

It's a search all over the world

and when I found this I thought, perfect!

and it was for Kathleen.

It's from a company called Plain Jane

that was big in the '60s and '70s

and obviously there's nothing plain about it.

One of the styles that Mena wore a lot of

were these maxi dresses, many of them had prints like this

and it became kind of a signature for her character.

Kathleen is quite a character on this show.

She's full of life and on this quest

to find the perfect man.

In the course of her searching, she starts her own business

with someone she's dating.

This is something that was appropriate for the time,

that was fun and kind of sassy

but it also could have been worn in an office environment.

- Kathleen. - Greg, what's wrong?

So I would say that Kathleen's style is really fun

and effervescent and vibrant and trendy,

but, you know, still like individual to her.

- Kathleen was the kind of woman that felt

that she should always look her best

and always look like there might be a man up the street

or in her view that could be attractive to her.

So there are little details like the flounce

in the top, the little bow tied in the back,

and the color and the choice of jewelry.

It was a statement.

Nothing really about Kathleen's character is subtle.

We just helped her to continue that.

- Look how sweet, I'll put the girls' pictures in there.

- We were actually thinking our pictures--

 Auch für die Herren der Schöpfung war auf dem weißen Catwalk einiges geboten. Auffällig: Ob Karo, große Blumen oder Brokat-Stoff – speziell bei der Männermode setzt Kretschmer auf Muster
