Make Your Polymer Clay GLOW with Glow-In-The-Dark Powders-Friday Findings - Duration: 8:09.

Have you ever wanted to recreate glow-in-the-dark effects in your polymer

clay sculpting? Well, I have and the first time I tried it I was a little

disappointed in the results so I've looked into some other products and I

have a bit of a review and a demonstration for you of

glow-in-the-dark powders from poly clay play.

Hey there creative people, Sandy here, welcome to another Friday findings video

at keepsakecrafts.net. So a couple years ago I made these little lamp posts for a

tutorial for Polymer Café magazine. Sadly... there I am... Polymer Café has gone out

of print so I have been taking all of those tutorials and making them into

PDFs in my Etsy shop and when I revisited this project I remember that I

was kind of disappointed in these. I think they're absolutely adorable. I love

the way my sculpting came out. Well, let me show you what I mean by the

disappointment. I have turned off all the lights in my room and there's the glow,

it's pretty faint and as you watch it is fading, fading, fading, fading. It's very

sad and disappointing because these would be

so much fun to put out in a little fairy garden. Let me turn the lights back on...

and have them glow part of the night anyways, if not all night long, that would

be fantastic. So I looked into some other products.

First of all let me show you what those, what these are made out of. I used the

glow in the dark clay from this Sculpey kit it comes with four glow-in-the-dark

colors and it says it's six pieces but sadly two of the pieces are solid black

and solid white which I thought was kind of a bummer, but they're baked the same

way that any other Sculpey clay is as a rule, 275 Fahrenheit, 15 minutes per

quarter-inch, some are 30 minutes per 1/4 inch. One thing I do not like about this

clay was it was squishy. I remember barely getting these very,

very thin petals sculpted, they were just so difficult to manage, very squidgy clay.

I didn't enjoy working with it. So when now it's time to put up that tutorial

and I want to be able to suggest to the folks who would like to make one of

these for themselves a better alternative. If you want to know more

about glow-in-the-dark and all the science behind it Ginger Davis Allman

has written a really interesting article over at the Blue Bottle Tree and she

reviews some other glow-in-the-dark powders and tells you all kinds of

interesting things about it. I'm not going to do that today. I just have these

three glow-in-the-dark powders from PolyClayPlay. I have aqua, green and purple

and I'll show you my results. What I did was I mixed them all with some Pardo

translucent clay. You definitely want to mix these with translucent so that the

glow can shine through. It just wouldn't make sense to mix them with a solid

color. The directions on here say to mix one vial with two ounces of clay. I

didn't need to mix an entire package of clay and I didn't want to use all my

powders so it was kind of guesswork. So what I have here are a few samples this

is the Sculpey set, the four colors of glow-in-the-dark

that came in that set and this is samples of the Pardo. I think green, blue

aqua and purple that I mixed, and I mixed varying amounts of the powders. One thing,

I just reread Ginger's article today and probably should have read it before I

started playing because she made a great suggestion. These powders are very, very

drying to the clay, you can just practically feel it drying out as you're

mixing it in. It's tricky, it's kind of messy, you mix it in

and then it just gets all crumbly. Pardo is already a little crumbly. She suggests

adding some liquid clay or clay softener, which i think is a very smart idea, it

helps the powders stick down so they don't make such a mess and it helps keep

the clay from drying out. So for my first set of samples I just spread one, this is

the aqua so I'll just put that on here. I just spread basically enough that would

stick to my sheet of clay and then mixed it in, and and I'm not gonna

demonstrate mixing it in because you can, you can figure that out for yourself. For

the second sample I mixed in probably about a quarter of the vial, it's hard to

gauge from these because most of it's covered with this sticker but I mixed a

fair amount, probably a about a full scoop which is maybe half a teaspoon, a

teaspoon. I'm not being real scientific here, but I mixed a lot more in

one of these samples is what I'm trying to say. So, let me turn out the lights and

I'll show you the results I got from that. None of these are baked so the

effects would probably be more glow-in-the-dark because of course the

clay turns more translucent once baked. So you can see the ones in the middle from

Sculpey are definitely... they glowed and then they're immediately fading back you

can tell the ones that I mixed more in, they have just a slightly, ever so

slightly brighter glow with the exception of the purple which is glowing

a tiny little bit. You can see it against the white tile, it has the faintest glow

but it's not nearly as bright. The green is definitely the brightest and then the

aqua so you can see that the ones with more powder and in this lower row

are the ones I have more in. Let me just shake off

that over there. So you definitely, the more powder you mix in the stronger the

glow is that you get. I did find that after about an hour these were pretty

much all faded. So these glow-in-the-dark powders I would say are, yes, absolutely a

better alternative to the Sculpey set. If you already own the Sculpey set go ahead

and use the colors and you can just mix powders into them. Now I have not looked

into any of the other glow-in-the-dark products out there. I would be interested

in hearing what your experience is with them, what you've found what works.

There's paints, there's other companies that manufacture powders, there was

another one that I came across but they didn't say how long the

glow lasted . There's also tapes, there's spray paints.

So if you want to get your polymer clay to glow for a little bit longer you can

try using the powders. Use more for a brighter glow and this will just give

you slightly better results. So I hope that you found this helpful and

interesting. Again, I open up the discussion to you. I would love to hear

what you have to say and what your experiences are with glow-in-the-dark

products for your polymer clay or anything, really. If you're interested in

any of these supplies click on the little "i" card in the upper right of the video or

there's a link in the description box to go to my blog post where I always have a

supply list with links to products. Be sure to subscribe if you haven't already.

Dark Mofo swimmers take the plunge for annual winter solstice dip - Duration: 3:49.

A record number of naked backsides have galloped down a Hobart beach into the water for the annual mad dash of Dark Mofo's winter solstice nude swim

With the air temperature hovering around 7 degrees Celsius, a record number of participants arrived in the dark to don red swimming caps supplied by organisers and steel themselves for the event, held annually as part of the Museum of Old and New Art's (MONA) festival of the bizarre

The stampede began at 7.42am, with waves of bodies throwing off the towels and heading towards the River Derwent, where a relatively tropical water temperature of around 14C awaited

In 2017, just over 1000 people registered for the event, catching out organisers who had factored in a number of no-shows – resulting in too many bums and not enough towels

This year more than 2200 signed up, with Dark Mofo learning the lesson of 2017, with plenty of linen on hand this morning at Long Beach in Sandy Bay

Come crunch time, organisers said 1537 punters turned up to get wet –a new record

The inaugural swim in 2013 was almost scuttled after police threatened to arrest participants for endangering public decency, with a senior police officer stating "whilst other people and other councils and other jurisdictions may have their own beliefs, here in Tasmania the fact is we are ensuring nobody is offended by this behaviour"

Following support from the government, the event was back on, with the then-police minister explaining he had called on the parties to come together and find a way to allow the nude swim to proceed

The swim coincides with similar events around the world marking the shortest day of the year, including a nude swim in Canberra

As part of their long-running tradition, Antarctic expeditioners cut a hole in the ice near Casey research station, with 21 team members braving the water temperature of minus 2 degrees Celsius

The early morning dip has gone on to become emblematic of the Dark Mofo festival, which has featured a number of performances that have challenged the public to examine their definition of art and performance

MONA founder David Walsh said the controversies have been good for business, with widespread acceptance now allowing the festival to be instrumental in boosting tourism numbers to the island

Dark Mofo runs until Sunday night and will culminate with an effigy of a giant cave spider carried aloft through the city centre and set alight at the end of the Ogoh-Ogoh parade

Hobart Lord Mayor wants to 'put brakes' on Dark Mofo - Duration: 5:41.

Millions of dollars in tourism revenue in the dead of Tasmania's winter is not enough to warm the heart of Hobart's Lord Mayor, who wants to snuff the flame of the city's annual winter festival, Dark Mofo

Dark Mofo is quickly becoming one of Australia's leading cultural events with international and national artists celebrating the winter solstice through occult, century-old winter rituals and sometimes sinister modern art

But Hobart Mayor Ron Christie has flagged cutting funding to Dark Mofo's popular Winter Feast event, with the council's annual $258,000 sponsorship ending this year and up for review

The festival's director Leigh Carmichael said an economic report in 2015 found the festival generates around $50 million, but the festival's ongoing popularity is expected to see that figure grow

"They say the mark of a good city is how well you look after your citizens, and I think the citizens have expressed their concerns about different aspects of Dark Mofo and which way it's going culturally," Mr Christie said

"Hobart is a community city, and it's Hobart, not Mobart." Destination Southern Tasmania chief executive Alex Heroys told the City of Hobart had supported the festival at all levels, and the comments made by the Lord Mayor had "not gone down well with the community"

He pointed to the council allowing controversial performance artist Mike Parr to bury himself below Hobart's busiest street – a sign of the council and community's overwhelming support of the winter festival

"There's only one voice that doesn't support it, and it seems to be him," Mr Heroys said about the Lord Mayor

The brainchild of the winter festival, art collector, professional gambler and founder of Hobart's Museum of Old and New Art, David Walsh, has defended the event and its darker themes

Mr Walsh told Hobart's newspaper, , Dark Mofo could "become tame" and "die in three years" if curators yielded to the concerns of critics

He acknowledged that while the festival was "not a family festival", it was a festival about "resisting the centre"

"We are not driven by a need to shock, but a need to test the merit of the status quo," Mr Walsh told the newspaper

"The measure of this festival is not its repeated successes but its willingness to risk honourable failure

We can't back off, because we care too much." The festival's program offers special exhibitions at the MONA gallery, but also transforms the city into a dark wonderland, inviting revellers to feast all of Tasmania along the Salamanca waterfront, take a nude solstice dip in the River Derwent and party in transformed historical buildings

Controversial art has dominated the program since the festival's inception. This year, large, red inverted crosses, known as the Cross of Saint Peter, mounted along the waterfront have offended the Christian community

Last year, Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch's artwork involving the slaughter of a bull, with blood-covered, fighting actors prompting animal rights groups to protest against slaughter in the name of art

Mr Christie told Hobart's newspaper, , "the line had been crossed, based on feedback" he'd been getting following the Australian Christian Lobby in Brisbane sending an online petition calling on glowing inverted crosses dotted around Hobart's CBD to be removed

Mr Christie has also expressed his distaste towards performance artist Mike Parr, who buried himself under the bitumen of a busy Hobart road for this year's winter festival

"This is what Dark Mofo is all about. They bring enormous tourism and dollars into our city and we thank them for that," Mr Christie told ABC Radio Hobart

"But when it comes to this I thought 'no, not appropriate. Not in this location'

There are plenty of other locations," he said.

DARK SOULS: Ornstein and Smough Challenge - Kill Smough First (turn on CC for commentary) - Duration: 15:01.

Hello everyone

And welcome to the Smough challenge

The objective is to kill Smough first, then "Super" Ornstein

With this build, it's hard!

Dead again....

First we have some failed attempts

During these, I'll talk through my tactics

My character is level 45

With the Black Iron armour set (not upgraded)

I'm wielding a +2 Gravelord Sword and a 100% damage reduction shield

I'm too slow to run past the knights, so I block before fleeing

You can see my full hero stats at the end of the video

The challenge took me a number of days to complete

I listened to music and podcasts to keep me sane!

If you sprint left past the pillar , the giant knight will usually go right

Giving you a clear run to the fog door

As soon as I enter, I move forward and block

Because Ornstein likes to charge at the start

This boss fight is all about using the pillars to block attacks

Whenever possible, I'm trying to hit Smough when Ornstein is occupied

Ornstein is the biggest threat. The challenge is about managing his position.

Smough's bum slam is the best opportunity to get in some attacks

You often have to take damage from Ornstein to attack Smough

My hero is slow, so I have to back up and block Smough's charge

I'm trying to lead him into the pillar behind me

Unfortunately he moves around it

Getting pinned like this is usually a death sentence

I got unlucky with Smough's repeated charges in that run

Why didn't I try to dodge roll them?

Well, I was in the open.

And the roll recovery is slow, so Ornstein probably would have killed me

It's usually safer to back off and try to use the pillars

Oops, I missed the door!

Now it's a Souls Sandwich...

Let's forget that happened, shall we?

I don't like wasting time killing the knights, so I always try to get past them fast

This time I got sloppy!

Thank god the loading times are so fast in this Remaster!

This is what I meant to do last time!

I continue blocking because he can stab you as you run away

I know when it's safe to drop the shield and run

The knights can chase you all the way to the hall

If you're too slow, they can even jump onto you when you're on the next staircase

If the big knight goes left here, then jump or roll immediately

If you get hit, the archer will finish you off

Here we go again...

I found it's safest to lure Smough to this corner first

I attack now, as Ornstein may be blocked by the pillar

Now I retreat, because they are both in the same "corridor"

The pillars can stop Ornstein's charge and lightning bolt

I'm always trying to use pillars as cover from Ornstein

I need to retreat and heal

Note how I keep the target on Ornstein

I can still track him, even when Smough blocks the view

You can block Smough's charge but it leaves you open

I know Ornstein's behind me, but I try to get some hits in

I use sprint to get close to Smough when there is an opening

But here I backed off because I knew Ornstein would come in

I'm trying to get close to Smough, but he charges

I move back to put the pillar between us

I know Ornstein's busy so I attack

I try to keep the target on Ornstein so I can block him

Note how I have to quickly switch target to block

Here I'm using the pillar again to split them up

The idea is to get the pillar between me and Ornstein

Unfortunately he still got me from behind

And Smough's hammer finishes me off

Next: The victorious run!

Notice how I'd only drink Estus when both enemies are behind a pillar

I could be more aggressive and tank damage

But I'm trying to save Estus for the final phase

My shield must have been slightly off-angle there

I don't mind taking a bit of damage beforehand

The boss attacks do so much more damage in comparison

In the first phase, I use Estus at around half HP, for safety

In the final phase, it's best to stay topped up because the attacks do so much damage

Here we go!

Ornstein's positioning let Smough get into the open

When they are both stuck together like this, it's dangerous to attack

Instead I lure them back

I run in because Ornstein's blocked off

Now my health is low I run back to heal

Targetting Ornstein in case he charges

Thanks to Smough's slam, I'm pincered

Time to retreat!

This swing leaves Smough wide open

Caught in the open it's time to resposition

The pillar should be blocking Ornstein on my left as I charge

Back to safety

I know Smough is behind me

Time to set up another split

Now is my chance!

Now the even harder phase!

I find cover right away

In case he uses lightning bolt immediately

This attack kills me instantly, so I'm nervous!

Aiiiiiiiii!!!!!

At range, using the pillars saves your life

The right flank is the safest spot

I block what I can

That's the scariest attack!

I'm trying to stay as close to him as possible

This positioning is when you are at most risk

I keep strafing to dodge the lightning bolt

The lightning lunge has a big hitbox

I have to be on his extreme right, or roll, to avoid it

When he jumps up, immediately retreat and block

I need to heal, and pray the pillar protects me

Argh!

Thank god I just healed!

That roll just saved my life too

That lunge can one-shot you

I'm using sprint to close the distance as fast as possible

I have to finish him now!

YES!

I'm spinning around in joy!

Phew, that was so close!

My HP was nearly gone. My heart was pumping for the whole final phase!

Many times when I've reached Super Ornstein, healing has got me killed

That's why in those final moments, I went in for the kill instead of backing off to heal

Here's my stats. I have no idea what level people usually do this boss at.

I put most of my points into STR, END and VIT

The Gravelord Sword makes it harder because it's quite slow

None of the armour is upgraded yet. I need twinkling titanite.

I have no idea if the extra poise makes any difference in that boss fight. Maybe for blocking Smoughs hammer?

Well, after hundreds of deaths I finally did it!

Thank you for watching, and Praise the Sun!

How to Treat Dark Knuckles - Duration: 3:00.

As soon as you meet someone,

you put your hand forward for a good handshake.

But if your hands are not well kept

you may have some hesitation.

Since our hands are used to carry out

most of the day's projects and chores

they need pampering to look nice and smooth

But they are one of the most neglected parts of body when it comes to beauty care

No matter how good you look

the roughness and dryness of your hands

and dark knuckles can take away the beauty of your hands.

Dark knuckles are one of the common problems that many people deal with

There can be several reasons behind dark knuckles

main reason is the melanin that forms in the body

which causes hyperpigmentation.

The reason for melanin formation is over exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays

It may also be due to hormonal changes in the body, accumulation of dark cells

use of chemical-based products

and work or sports that cause excessive friction on the knuckles

Some skin diseases can also lead to dark knuckles

such as eczema and psoriasis.

Dark knuckles mean extra care is required

as the damage has been done already so now it has to be mended

There are many simple and effective home remedies to treat dark knuckles

Here are the top 5 ways to treat dark knuckles.

1. Take Care of Your Hands

To deal with dark knuckles, the first thing you need to do is take proper care of your hands.

Be gentle when you are washing or massaging your hands. At the same time

avoid washing them with extremely hot water and refrain from rubbing them too hard.

2. Lemon and Sugar Scrub

Gently exfoliating your hands with a homemade lemon

and sugar scrub can help lighten the tone

of your skin by removing dead cells from the skin's surface.

3. Coconut Oil

A source of remarkable skin-benefiting goodness,

coconut oil is a good home remedy to treat dark knuckles.

It has vitamin E that can help lighten the skin tone

and prevent dryness by keeping the skin hydrated and moisturized

It can also repair dark and damaged skin.

4. Yogurt

For dark knuckles, yogurt is also beneficial

The lactic acid in yogurt works as an effective bleaching agent that aids in lightening skin color

The lactic acid also can remove the top layer of dead skin cells.

Furthermore, it can combat dry, scaly or darkened skin and help keep the skin moisturized.

5. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a great remedy for skin that has become dark due to excessive sun exposure.

It works as an effective sunburn salve, due to its powerful anti-inflammatory properties

It will also keep the skin hydrated and moisturized.

Ariana Grande Dances In The Dark For Her & Nicki Minaj's 'The Light Is Coming' Video - News Today - Duration: 2:43.

The light is here! Ariana Grande dropped her new music video for her and Nicki Minaj's track 'The Light Is Coming' and it's AMAZING

Check it out here!    Ariana Grande, 24, is having a busy month. From her love life to promotions of her upcoming album Sweetener, fans have a ton of new Ari-content to be excited about

The newest drop from the artist is the video for her latest single, "The Light Is Coming," featuring Nicki Minaj, 35

Watch the video here.  As previously teased on her Instagram, it includes tons of shots of the singer dancing in a dark forest with a bright orb of light

But she threw us a curve ball by multiplying into multiple versions of her dancing self

In case you didn't know, Ariana is a brand ambassador for Reebok, and as part of her collaboration, she debuted the visual on the athletic wear company's website for the first 24 hours of its release

She can also be seen rocking a pair of Reebok Rapide sneakers in the video.    Fans didn't need to wait long after the song was released to see its accompanying visual

The single was dropped around midnight ET on June 20, with the video coming just 12 hours later

While this is a lot to enjoy at once, it'll be another month before we hear more from the "No Tears Left To Cry" hitmaker's fourth studio album

She previously promised that she'd be dropping something on the 20th of each month before the LP comes out, so the next song won't be here until July 20

But after that, there will be less than a month until the album's release date of Aug

17. It's going to be a pretty great summer for Ari's fans!  This also isn't the only Nicki and Ariana collab we've been blessed with lately

The duo also worked together on the rapper's track, "Bed" from her own forthcoming album, Queen

Ariana also partnered up with Troye Sivan, 23, for his recent bop, "Dance To This

" So there's a ton of ways to listen to the "Side To Side" singer right now, and all of them are excellent options

Not gonna lie though, I'm probably most looking forward to Ariana's currently unreleased song "Pete" from Sweetener, which is (obviously) based on her fiancé Pete Davidson, 24

But until that comes out, I'll be watching her newest music video!

Writing into the Dark: Write a book without an outline! - Duration: 9:48.

What if I told you that it is possible to write a book without an outline?

What if I told you that many authors are doing this with great success?

And what if I told you that there was a roadmap, a guide, an exact playbook to writing your

next book without an outline?

In this video I'll be digging into Writing into the Dark by Dean Wesley Smith, which

teaches writers how to write without outlines.

***

What's up, guys?

This is Michael La Ronn with Author Level Up, giving you the best tools and strategies

for writing faster and reaching readers with your stories.

This is the kickoff to a new video series where I'll be covering the best books on

writing craft and talking about the ideas behind them to help you write better and faster.

For me personally, the foundational book that changed everything for me was Writing into

the Dark by Dean Wesley Smith.

I credit much of my prolific output to this little powerful but often misunderstood book.

Dean is a USA Today bestselling author and he wrote many of the Star Trek novels that

I read as a kid.

He's written over 100 novels and hundreds and hundreds of short stories in many genres.

Together with his wife, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, he runs WMG Publishing, which publishes all

of Dean and Kris's books.

They also facilitate online and in-person workshops for writers with great writing advice

that you can't find anywhere else.

His writing courses are game-changers, guys—see my WMG Workshop Review video for more info.

So let's talk about the big idea in Writing into the Dark, which is this: writing without

an outline is a scary proposition for most writers, but it can be done.

But outlining is such a deep-seated habit because it's taught so widely in schools.

It's what teachers and college professors are recommending to their students, and people

are often reluctant to do the opposite of what they learn in school, even many years

later as an adult.

Most writers are trained to think they need an outline when in fact, some of the best

creativity comes from spontaneity.

There's no one way to do anything, and I'm not telling you that you need to stop outlining,

but many long time professional writers like Dean have learned to ditch outlines with great

success.

I found Writing in the Dark in late 2015, which was the perfect time in my life.

At the time I was frustrated with how much time I was spending on outlining.

For my Android X trilogy, I had actually tracked how much time I spent in every phase of the

book, down to the very minute.

It looked like this: 20% outlining

60% writing the first draft 20% revising the first draft

60% of my time for this entire series was actually spent writing.

If you look at that on a grade scale, that's a failing grade.

The other 40% was not spent writing at all.

And most of my emotional struggles were during the 40%.

And you know the worst part?

I didn't even follow my outlines most of the time.

The characters led me down different paths.

So if I was spending all this time writing outlines that I didn't follow...why was

I outlining again?

So I wanted to find a way to eliminate the "emotional rollercoaster" of writing a

novel.

You know, the ups and downs, both emotional and production-wise.

Your novel is awesome one day, horrible the next, you're writing one day, not writing

the next.

I prefer consistency, and I told myself that I'd rather reduce my time spend on outlining

and revising even if it meant spending a little more time writing the book.

Right around this time is when I found Writing into the Dark.

It was the answer I needed.

Now, this is a small book, but Dean covers a lot of concepts in it, like the fact that

writing without an outline is really scary if you haven't written without an outline

before.

He also covers how to manage uncertainty since you don't know what's going to happen

in your novel, and helpful hints such as simply writing the next sentence, cycling back through

your work so that you can write a clean first draft, and what to do when you're stuck.

A big concept that he explains is that creativity comes from the back of your brain—he calls

it the creative voice.

Others might call it a muse or your subconscious.

Similar idea.

But when we outline, we do it from the front of our brain, which is more logical and critical.

Dean calls it the critical voice.

This part of the brain's job is to keep you safe, so any time you have fear, the critical

voice jumps in to protect you.

It will tell you that your work sucks, or you should quit, or any other kind of silliness—anything

to make the fear go away.

And in this case, that's the fear that you can't write without an outline.

The critical voice is not your friend.

It's logical and not creative.

It wants to stop you from finishing your book, and it kills many writing careers every single

day.

Dean refers to it like a parent who's looking out for a child.

The creative voice is your friend.

It's insanely creative if you let it be, but it's a sensitive thing.

It's easily suppressed and stops cold the moment the critical voice starts speaking.

In order to thrive, it needs ample room to play.

If the critical voice is a parent, then the creative voice is the innocent, optimistic,

playful child.

You've got to let that child out to play, and play as much as possible.

Dean's point is that writing in its most pure and engaging form can only happen when

you learn to suppress the critical voice and let the creative voice do its job.

Easier said than done.

I consider the book to be not only a helpful book, but also a manifesto on how to be endlessly

creative.

Here's the #1 Idea from this book that changed my perspective on everything.

It's not even a popular section or a common highlight.

Most people will probably miss it.

That idea is this: "…Writing into the Dark takes a belief

system in story.

It takes a trust that your creative voice knows what it is doing.

And it takes a vast amount of mental fight [...to] let the fine work your creative voice

has done alone and not ruin it with your critical voice."

Writing as a belief system.

That got me thinking about my relationship with religion.

I believe in a higher power.

I can't prove it, though.

For example, I could tell you about an emotional experience I had that gave me faith, but you

can't see it.

I can't really convince you that a God exists.

Yet I still choose to have my own belief system because of faith.

Faith is believing in something even if you can't see it, even if you can't prove

it.

Without faith, you don't have a belief system./ It's the cornerstone on which any belief

in ANYTHING intangible rests.

I'm going to get philosophical for a minute, but writing for me is a sacred act.

It's as sacred as prayer.

When I sit down and write and simply trust my creative voice and have full faith in it,

I'm connecting with something higher than myself, for reasons beyond myself.

Because I don't outline, I never know where my story is going to go, but I trust my creative

voice.

And it always, always, always comes through for me.

It has never failed me.

Not once.

But that, like belief in any major religion, takes an incredible amount of faith.

And guys, I'm not an overly religious person.

Let me tell you another story.

When I decided to put Writing into the Dark into action, I tried it with Old Dark, Book

1 in my Last Dragon Lord dark fantasy series.

(Side note: I wrote my book Old Dark in the dark.

Get it?

Haha) I wrote this book with no outline, no idea

of what was going to happen except an image of the first scene in my head.

The story is one of the most interesting, twisting narratives I've ever written.

It's the story of Old Dark, a supreme Dragon Lord who has ruled the world for hundreds

of years with brutality.

He's a supervillain.

When an assassination attempt on his life goes wrong, he falls asleep and wakes up 1,000

years in the future, in a society ruled by his enemies.

The story starts off in a Game of Thrones-like, high fantasy world, but as I explored it,

it morphed into a futuristic urban fantasy as you follow Dark on his quest to seek revenge

and reclaim power.

It has a lot of plot twists, a lot of players, politics, and is quite Shakespearean in tone.

In other words, it's the kind of book most writers would try to outline first because

it's pretty complex.

Anyway, when I published the book, readers said some interesting things in their reviews:

They were posting things like the story was deliciously good, it kept them wanting more,

and all kinds of other things that I had never seen them write before.

That's when I knew that I was on to something.

So let me bring this full circle for you: I was frustrated with outlining, committed

to stop doing it.

I followed Dean's Writing into the Dark method, wrote an entire series without an

outline, and readers praised me for it and didn't even know the difference.

And ultimately, my story and characters were better for it.

All of that because I trusted my creative voice to do its job.

If that's not a success story, I don't know what is.

If you've never done this before, trust me: I know it's hard to give up the safety

of outlining and venturing into the dark instead.

To use Dean's analogy from the book, It's like journeying into a dark cave without knowing

where the exit is.

It's dark, pitch dark, and you can't see anything, not even your hand in front of your

face.

And it's scary too.

You fear what you can't see, and everything is new and frightening.

There are creepy stalagmites and stalactites, hidden bodies of water, and at every turn

it seems like you run into a dead end.

A few times you want to quit and run out of the cave, back into safety.

But if you remain patient and push through the discomfort, you'll eventually find the

exit.

You'll emerge on the other side.

And when you come out on the other side, it'll be one of the most amazing things you've

ever seen.

Fearlessness, self-confidence in your writing, satisfied readers and a better story all converge

into an incredible euphoria of a finished novel.

Anything feels possible.

You'll have so much more confidence and feel so much better about yourself and your

writing that it won't even be funny.

But in order to get there, you've got to get through the cave.

And the first time around, I'm not gonna lie—it's a bitch.

But it gets easier every time you do it as long as you have faith and trust your creative

voice.

Gemini Discovery Series 1: A Galaxy Without Dark Matter - Duration: 7:24.

Hello, and welcome to Gemini Observatory!

I'm your host, Hannah Blomgren.

Throughout the course of this series, you will embark journey through the universe,

as we discover some of the most fascinating research recently conducted at the observatory.

During this installment, we will be discussing a galaxy without dark matter, and its implications

on galaxy formation.

The Gemini Observatory is an international consortium of five partner countries and two

identical 8- meter telescopes.

The Frederick C. Gillett Gemini Telescope is located on Mauna Kea, Hawaii (Gemini North)

and the other is located Cerro Pachón in central Chile (Gemini South).

Together the twin telescopes provide full coverage over both hemispheres of the sky.

The telescopes incorporate technologies that allow large, relatively thin mirrors, under

active control, to collect and focus both visible and infrared radiation from space.

The cutting edge technologies employed at Gemini, such as an advanced adaptive optics

system, make Gemini one of the most adept ground-based telescopes in the world, capable

of redefining the boundaries of astronomical research.

Gemini North played an instrumental role in recent research led by Principal Investigator

Pieter van Dokkum of Yale University.

The team was imaging a galaxy called NGC 1052-DF2 (DF2 for short) and realized that it had little

to no dark matter.

In fact, it has 400 times less dark matter than expected for an object of its size.

Generally, most of the mass present in galaxies is from dark matter.

It is currently believed that as much as 85% of the universe is comprised of dark matter,

leaving only 15% as visible material.

This is the first galaxy to ever be observed without dark matter, which has massive implications

for our understanding of galaxy formation.

Dark matter gets its name because it is invisible and does not interact with normal particles.

However, it is still detectable because it interacts with us through gravity.

Researchers can determine how much dark matter is in a system by looking at the mass of the

galaxy and the gravitational interactions there.

The mass in a system is determined by the speed at which the galaxy rotates.

The faster the galaxy rotates, the more mass there is in the system.

All normal galaxies rotate faster than can be accounted for by the visible matter that's

present, which means that there is some undetectable mass that is influencing galaxy rotation,

which we call dark matter.

Galaxies without dark matter would move much more slowly.

If these galaxies moved as fast as they are observed, but without dark matter, they would

actually fly apart without the gravity of dark matter holding them together.

Researchers looked at the velocities of ten globular clusters in the galaxy, to determine

whether there was a discrepancy between the speed and mass of the galaxy.

But their movements can be accounted for entirely by the mass of the visible material, meaning

there's no dark matter!

The lack of dark matter in DF2 is actually a case for its existence.

If dark matter didn't exist, and it was just an inherent property of gravity that

caused galaxies to behave the way they do, then we would expect all galaxies to behave

the same way.

They would all appear to have the same portion of dark matter.

Because this galaxy has no dark matter, it is apparent that dark matter is not always

coupled with regular matter, making it a real and separate entity.

DF2 is an ultra-diffuse galaxy, which means it is extremely low density.

DF2 has the same volume as our Milky Way Galaxy, but has only 0.5% the amount of stellar material.

This type of galaxy is actually very common, however DF2 is unusual in this group for a

number of reasons.

Shany Danieli, a graduate student from Yale University who is part of the DF2 team, will

explain why.

Dragonfly 2 really caught our eyes.

It was very faint.

It had a component of very smooth, faint light.

But it was all peppered with many compact objects, which are basically compact and bright

star clusters, that are being called globular clusters, which is something we never saw

before.

So we were really curious about what is this thing, and how was it formed, and what kind

of dark matter component it has.

The globular clusters that were measured are much brighter than normal.

They emit almost as much light as those in the Milky Way.

No other galaxy so far has appeared to be so lacking in dark matter, in fact, other

ultra-diffuse galaxies seem to have an over-abundance of dark matter.

For instance, another ultra-diffuse galaxy was found to be 99% dark matter.

Researchers used the Gemini Multi Object Spectrograph (GMOS) to take images to assess its structure,

and confirm that the galaxy had no signs of interactions with other galaxies, which helps

answer questions about the conditions surrounding its birth.

So we used to think that galaxies are formed inside halos, so these big blobs of dark matter,

and that dark matter is the most dominant aspect of any galaxy that we know.

Basically, you know, we do get some upper estimate for the galactic mass, which is at

least of couple of hundred times lower than we expected.

So, it doesn't quite speak on this relation between the stellar mass component of the

galaxy and the halo mass component.

So this should be explained somehow...

NGC1052-DF2 challenges the standard ideas of how we think galaxies form.

DF2 was first spotted with the Dragonfly Telephoto Array in Mexico, which was designed to detect

ultra-diffuse galaxies.

The team then used Gemini, Keck, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to further probe

this faint galaxy, before turning to Hubble for its final observations.

DF2 is about 65 million light years away, in a collection of galaxies dominated by the

giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1052, and the growth of this galaxy may have resulted in

DF2's dark matter deficiency.

Another idea is that some cataclysmic event swept out all the gas and dark matter.

This is, however, conjecture.

So we are working currently on a big survey, called the Dragonfly Wide Field Survey, which

is going to cover a very wide area.

We hope to find many of these ultra-diffuse galaxies and maybe, perhaps, some new ultra-diffuse

galaxies that lack dark matter, to have a better statistical sample of these objects.

Every galaxy we knew about before has dark matter, and they all fall in familiar categories

like spiral or elliptical galaxies.

But what would you get if there was no dark matter at all?

Maybe this is what you would get.

Stay tuned for our next installment!

Thanks for watching and continue to be curious about the world around us.
