Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination is about the influence of Catholic

imagery on designers.

It's the largest show that The Costume Institute has staged.

It's in two sites: The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters.

The garments that we've chosen specifically relate to religious objects

within The Met's collection.

So, in a way, it's a series of interventions, forging dialogues between fashion and the

display of religious arts within a museum context.

We have over 50 masterworks from The Vatican collection;

many haven't been seen outside of the Vatican before.

The Byzantine galleries focus on designers who've been inspired by

the interiors of Byzantine churches.

One example is Gianni Versace's last collection,

which was inspired by the micro-mosaics at Ravenna Cathedral.

And the Medieval Sculpture Hall focuses on the holy ordering of the Catholic church.

One of the highlights is by John Galliano for Christian Dior, a sort of figment of John's

imagination of a pope.

In The Met Cloisters, the exhibition is focusing on designers who've been inspired by monastic

orders, but also the seven sacraments of the Catholic faith.

With this catalogue, we worked with the artist Katerina Jebb.

Katerina scans garments, sometimes up to a hundred scans and collages them back together,

and that process captures the materiality of the garments in a greater detail than perhaps

a camera.

It almost gives a sort of saintly aura.

Fundamentally, designers who either were raised or educated Catholic

have a metaphorical inclination

that defines their creative impulses.

Designers certainly gravitate towards religious imagery for provocation.

On the whole, I'd say that the majority of designers engage with it for nostalgia and

for reasons of beauty.

I hope that one of the takeaways from the exhibition is that Catholicism as a belief

system has inspired some of the most extraordinary works of art.

Fashion that celebrates African strength and spirit | Walé Oyéjidé - Duration: 4:55.

It is often said that the stories of history are written by its victors,

but if this is true,

what becomes of the downtrodden,

and how can they ever hope to aspire for something greater

if they are never told the stories of their own glorious pasts?

Ostensibly, I stand before you as a mere maker of clothing,

but within the folds of ancient fabrics and modern textiles,

I have found a higher calling.

Through my work as a designer,

I've discovered the importance of providing representation

for the marginalized members of our society,

and the importance of telling the most vulnerable among us

that they no longer have to compromise themselves

just so they can fit in with an uncompromising majority.

It turns out that fashion,

a discipline many of us consider to be trivial,

can actually be a powerful tool for dismantling bias

and bolstering the self-images of underrepresented populations.

My interest in using design as a vehicle for social change

happens to be a personal one.

As a Nigerian American, I know how easily the term "African"

can slip from being an ordinary geographic descriptor

to becoming a pejorative.

For those of us from this beautiful continent,

to be African is to be inspired by culture

and to be filled with undying hope for the future.

So in an attempt to shift the misguided perceptions that many have

about the place of my birth,

I use design as a means to tell stories,

stories about joy,

stories about triumph,

stories about perseverance all throughout the African diaspora.

I tell these stories

as a concerted effort to correct the historical record,

because, no matter where any of us is from,

each of us has been touched by the complicated histories

that brought our families to a foreign land.

These histories shape the way we view the world,

and they mold the biases we carry around with us.

To combat these biases,

my work draws aesthetics from different parts of the globe

and crafts a narrative about the importance

of fighting for inclusivity.

By refashioning images from classic European art

and marrying them with African aesthetics,

I am able to recast people of color in roles of prominence,

providing them with a degree of dignity

they didn't have in earlier times.

This approach subverts the historically accepted narrative of African inferiority,

and it serves as inspiration for people of color

who have grown wary of seeing themselves depicted without sophistication

and without grace.

Each of these culture-bending tapestries

becomes a tailored garment

or a silk scarf, like the one I am very coincidentally wearing right now.

(Laughter)

And even when surrounded in a structure of European classicism,

these narratives boldly extoll the merits of African empowerment.

In this way, the tools of the masters become masterworks

to celebrate those who were once subservient.

This metaphor extends beyond the realm of art

and out into the real world.

Whether worn by refugees or world-changing entrepreneurs,

when people are allowed the freedom to present themselves

in a manner that celebrates their own unique identities,

a magical thing happens.

We stand taller.

We're more proud and self-aware

because we're presenting our true, authentic selves.

And those of us who are around them in turn become more educated,

more open and more tolerant of their different points of view.

In this way, the clothes that we wear

can be a great illustration of diplomatic soft power.

The clothes that we wear can serve as bridges

between our seemingly disparate cultures.

And so, yeah, ostensibly I stand before you as a mere maker of clothing.

But my work has always been about more than fashion.

It has become my purpose to rewrite the cultural narratives

so that people of color can be seen in a new and nuanced light,

and so that we,

the proud children of sub-Saharan Africa,

can traverse the globe

while carrying ourselves with pride.

It was indeed true that the stories of history

were told by its old victors,

but I am of a new generation.

My work speaks for those

who will no longer let their futures be dictated by a troubled past.

Today, we stand ready to tell our own stories

without compromise, without apologies.

But the question still remains:

are you prepared for what you are about to hear?

I hope you are, because we are coming regardless.

(Applause)

Fashion Capital of the World | Milan Travel Vlog | Part 1 - Duration: 5:57.

hey guys welcome back to another episode of Nomad travel adventures this

assignment and I'm currently at my hostel getting ready to take you through

the fashion capital of the world Milan Italy I've been kind of on an Italy kick

lately and I was just browsing through flights and I found a really really

cheap one for 20 euros round trip so I basically had to go for it

if you haven't subscribed to my channel you can do so by clicking on the

subscribe button below I'm gonna be posting videos of how to get really

cheap flights and how I do it cuz a lot of you have been asking me so how do you

travel so much well one of the key things is to get a really cheap flight

so make sure you stay tuned for that I've also got some really really cool

trips coming up it's gonna be pretty great so the cool thing about Milano is

that it's a smaller city than some of the ones that I've been to and that's

really great because you can get around and see everything a lot quicker I've

got really cool things planned for today I think the highlights probably gonna be

seeing the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci that'll be a little later today so

make sure you stay tuned for that but the first thing I'm gonna take you

through is the Duomo which is the giant Cathedral that they have here if you

haven't seen this in Milan you basically haven't been it's the number one tourist

attraction and you'll be able to see why the architecture is incredible so yeah

let's go you

oh why was another adventure this time of his in fashion capital of the world

the lawn even though I had been here before this place never failed to

impress me okay so just a quick little tip for you guys when you're getting

around in Milan the subway is one of the best ways to go and you can actually buy

a 48-hour MetroCard which will give you access to the subway 48 hours from the

time that you bought it at and so try to use this whenever you're here because

it's really really convenient taking the subway I headed off to the main tourist

attraction in the lawn the Duomo so one thing I have forgotten to take into

account was the fast pace of the city but in no time I arrived to the dome oh

and there was a huge crowd of tourists hanging out in the plaza I marveled at

the amazing sight it was really cool getting to see the busy Center up in lon

along with the awesome architecture of the Duomo seriously I see a lot of

churches but the outside of the Duomo is something very unique not sure if it's

because of the color or the unique shape of the structure but this has got to be

one of my favorites it's only three euros to get a ticket to go see it on

the side and you can easily pre-booked online or buy the ticket at the office

located right next to it it had been a while since I had been inside but held a

very special place since this had been my very first church to visit outside of

the US so after exploring a bit of the plaza occupied by tourists pigeons and

the occasional local riding a bicycle I headed into the office to get my ticket

once inside it was better than what I remembered amazing architecture to say

the least the insight was like walking into the

history of Milan and its foundation now I know it's a church and has nothing to

do with fashion there was something so exquisite about

the many arches and structures inside of this tourist attraction add to that a

touch of Holi and you've got yourself the infamous form of the lawn

hey guys so as you can see I have the Duomo right behind me for three euros

you can go inside so I think it's totally worth checking out just so you

can get a feel for it right now I'm in the plaza and there are

so many freaking people here it's truly incredible but I think we're probably

gonna get some authentic Italian coffee and then head over to the Shi aza the

Salmo DCO which is a Swedish ancient Turkey so yeah I'm ready for some

caffeine let's go with the Sun at its peak I wondered a bit through the center

marveling and amazingly dressed people and the many shops around I was on the

search for some strong and authentic coffee which I was able to easily get in

the form of the beautiful cappuccino made by a nearby coffee shop they had

delicious pastries and other stuff to eat but I needed my caffeine fix after

watching them prepare the cappuccino it was time to see why everyone loves

Italian coffee and why you'll never find Starbucks anywhere in Italy it was one

of those experiences that it's hard to describe but I can just say that

Starbucks is not needed after my coffee it was time to head over to Xie siddhis

mot soon out in the streets i let google map sleep away but i was fascinated by

the amazing high-end fashion shops that i kept coming across this was definitely

a nice area and I saw no she Aza anywhere I asked a couple of people who

informed me that Google misled me and I was actually at the most famous shopping

district of Monte Napoleone in this is the place to head over to if you're into

big luxury brands and from the looks of it when it comes to fashion Milan did

not play around

like my videos subscribe for more
