The US Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, toting dozens of fighter jets around the world,

will soon lose their ability to project power if the US cannot produce systems to defend

against hypersonic weapons like the ones being developed by China and Russia, a senior Pentagon

official said March 7.

According to the Washington Examiner, Undersecretary of Defense for Research Michael Griffin gave

a speech at the McAleese-Credit Suisse Defense Conference in which he said, "when the Chinese

can deploy tactical or regional hypersonic systems, they hold at risk our carrier battle

groups.

They hold our entire surface fleet at risk.

They hold at risk our forward deployed land-based forces."

Griffin explained that Beijing "has done 20 times as many of hypersonic weapons tests

as has the United States over the last decade."

Just yesterday, Sputnik reported on how Chinese researchers tested a reusable hypersonic spacecraft

with an eye toward both civilian and military applications.

If the US cannot give sailors and warfighters the "ability to defend" against a non-nuclear

projectile flying faster than five times the speed of sound at surface ships and cannot

supply them with "at least an equal response capability on the offensive side," the official

stressed, then the US has "allowed a situation to exist where our deployed forces are held

at risk."

Putting US forces at risk leaves generals in a position where "our only response is

either to let them have their way or to go nuclear," Griffin said.

"That should be an unacceptable situation for the United States."

A hypersonic glide vehicle moves fast enough to travel to any point on the globe in less

than three hours.

As it relates to US defenses, the vehicle's flight altitude exposes a major vulnerability.

"The advantage of hypersonic systems is, broadly speaking, irrespective of their range, that

they underfly missile defense and they overfly air defense.

That's a niche we haven't spent much time in recently and if I had to pick my highest

technical priority, responding that that, both offensively and defensively, that would

be my highest technical priority," Griffin stated.

First U.S. combat troops arrive in Vietnam - 3/8/1965 - Duration: 0:49.

Today in military history, 1965.

The first US combat troops arrive in Vietnam.

Throughout 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson

faced growing pressure with regards to Vietnam.

He was determined to face the battle against communism

with, quote, "strength and determination,"

but foreign and domestic sources wanted a peaceful solution.

By March 1965, tension had escalated,

and US airbases were regularly targeted

by the communist North, so Johhnson sent 3500 Marines

to secure the Da Nang Airbase.

The 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade

was welcomed with fanfare,

including sightseers, South Vietnames military,

and American soldiers with a sign that read,

"Welcome, gallant Marines."

It would be a bloody decade before the US Marine Corps'

involvement in South Vietnam finally ended.

(rousing orchestral accent)

S. Korean president's chief envoys leave for U.S. carrying 'plus alpha' offer for talks from N... - Duration: 2:37.

South Korea's presidential envoys are now heading to Washington to discuss the outcome

of their North Korea trip with their U.S. counterparts.

The meetings will be critical in the next phase of the latest detente with North Korea:

Pyongyang, Washington talks on denuclearization.

Our chief Blue House correspondent Moon Connyoung explains.

Two days after they returned from a historic trip to North Korea, South Korea's chief presidential

envoys headed for the U.S. on Thursday to meet officials there and discuss the outcome

of their meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un earlier in the week.

"At this point I cannot discuss any details of this trip.

But, the most urgent issue for us is to make sure the United States and North Korea will

engage in talks."

President Moon Jae-in's directors of National Security Office and National Intelligence

Service are scheduled to meet with their U.S. counterparts over the next two days... and

possibly even President Donald Trump.

U.S. officials will be looking to see if the South's Chung Eui-yong and Suh Hoon reaffirm

that the North's Kim has promised to refrain from nuclear and missile tests and to engage

in negotiations on giving up its nuclear arsenal if its security is guaranteed.

"Obviously, we are cautiously optimistic that there's some forward progress here.

But we've been optimistic before so we're going to have watch actions and see if they

match words"

That much was announced by the South Koreans upon return from their Pyongyang trip earlier

this week, but the South Korean leader's chief envoys have said they are carrying additional

offers from North Korea's Kim Jong-un to pass on to U.S. President Trump.

They did not announce what the "plus alpha" entails but local media in South Korea are

raising speculations.

Among them - Pyongyang's vow to halt its development of intercontinental ballistic missiles BUT

dependent on (quote) U.S. attitude to the release of three U.S. citizens detained in

the reclusive state.

If Washington takes up on the offer, the Americans' step likely will be to ask the North Koreans

directly reiterate that position... which could be done through a special envoy from

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

"If North Korea reaffirms that stance, that probably would represent a sufficient basis

for the U.S. to begin talking with North Korea.

But, the ball is now in the U.S. President Donald Trump's court.

What's for sure is that the "plus alpha" that South Korea's presidential envoys are to pass

on to Washington will serve as the make-it or break-it factor in what has the potential

to become a historic turning point.

Moon Connyoung, Arirang News, the Blue House."

Why this U.S. beer keg company is worried about Trump's tariffs - Duration: 5:19.

JUDY WOODRUFF: President Trump's promised tariffs on steel and aluminum imports have

drawn mixed reaction from political leaders, including pushback from top congressional

Republicans.

American businesses are also divided.

Hari Sreenivasan spoke to one business owner about how the tariffs might affect his company.

HARI SREENIVASAN: Paul Czachor is CEO of the American Keg Company.

It's the only domestic manufacturer of steel kegs in the country.

Thanks for joining us.

First, we hear the president is about to sign off on these tariffs as early as tomorrow

perhaps.

Are you a fan of it?

PAUL CZACHOR, CEO, American Keg Company: Hari, thanks for having me on.

I would say that we are very concerned with the tariffs.

I think, when we first started discussing this, we were cautiously optimistic.

And now that's turned to a concern.

HARI SREENIVASAN: How come?

PAUL CZACHOR: Well, today, our domestic-made kegs are priced higher than several imports,

mainly from China.

And if these tariffs go through, domestic steel will continue to increase in price,

but all of the import kegs will still use the low-cost steel from offshore, and those

prices will stay the same.

Therefore, the delta will be even higher to purchase an American-made keg.

HARI SREENIVASAN: So, how do you live through that?

Do you end up absorbing the cost to try to ride this out?

PAUL CZACHOR: I don't think we could live through that.

I mean, the cost will be significant.

If steel goes up by $25 -- or 25 percent, that's going to be a significant increase

to a stainless steel keg that's made domestically.

HARI SREENIVASAN: You know, the administration's core reasoning for is that it's been unfair

for a long time, and we're just trying to fix it.

Have you felt that kind of pressure when you have been running this business?

PAUL CZACHOR: I think what the administration is trying to do is fix a problem in the steel

and aluminum industry, and not to deep enough -- I don't have a deep enough understanding

to tell you how I feel about that, but I'm sure they're trying to fix a problem.

But the concern we have is for the downstream products, such as stainless steel beer kegs.

That's not going to help any downstream products.

As I said earlier, those import kegs will still come in using the low-cost steel.

HARI SREENIVASAN: So what I'm hearing is, is if this is bad for your business, what

happens to your employees?

PAUL CZACHOR: Well, unfortunately, if it's -- if it's the worst-case scenario that we're

looking at, we would be forced to shut down, just because we couldn't compete using high-priced

domestic steel.

You know, the hope from the administration is, you know, it's got to be a multistep process,

and, somehow, we have to address the downstream products that are coming into this country

with low-cost steel.

I don't know how we can get that done, and I don't know if it can happen quickly enough.

HARI SREENIVASAN: So, how -- I was going to say, how do you do that?

I mean, that would mean all the different products that are made with low-cost steel

that come in that we are consuming right now.

PAUL CZACHOR: We certainly will try to, you know, petition for some tariffs on stainless

steel kegs.

But, again, there are several industries that use steel for their domestic-made products.

And I don't know how the administration will address the multiple industries that will

be impacted with this.

HARI SREENIVASAN: How many employees do you have now?

PAUL CZACHOR: I have approximately 20 employees.

And, unfortunately, we had to let approximately 10 employees, so we're at -- let them go.

We were at 30 employees a couple of weeks ago.

But we're already starting to see the steel prices domestically go up, and we're starting

to lose some business already.

HARI SREENIVASAN: So, you know, for somebody who doesn't understand this business, kind

of break that down for us.

How does the cost of steel going up into your kegs impact your business so profoundly that

you have to start making cuts?

PAUL CZACHOR: Well, when we go out, our customers -- we have approximately -- in the U.S., there's

approximately 7,000 craft brewers, wineries, and cideries that will purchase those kegs.

And when we talk with our customers, they're certainly willing to pay a small price -- or

a higher price for an American-made keg with American steel, American workers, et cetera.

But that price, the delta, is continuing to go higher and higher.

So, maybe at $5 a keg, a customer is willing to do that to support American-made products.

But at $15 or $20, they're not willing to do that.

HARI SREENIVASAN: Paul, what I'm hearing is that these workers that you have are exactly

who the administration wants to save and want to see their lives improve, but you're describing

a scenario where this is actually making it worse.

PAUL CZACHOR: Yes.

And, you know, I believe the administration wants to fix several items, but they're going

to have to certainly look at the downstream products, as I mentioned earlier.

And I'm sure there's many industries similar to us that use domestic steel where it's going

to increase, and not by a trivial amount, but by a significant amount in the case of

stainless steel kegs.

HARI SREENIVASAN: How do you resolve this?

What do you hope happens?

PAUL CZACHOR: Well, I would hope that we'd reconsider some of these tariffs, at least

delay them, or look at the holistic view of, how do we fix some of the downstream issues?

HARI SREENIVASAN: All right, Paul Czachor, CEO of the American Keg Company, thanks so

much.

PAUL CZACHOR: I appreciate it.

Thank you.

HOT NEWS! Chinese EV Startup NIO Hires Banks for $2 Billion U S Capital IPO | With Subtittle - Duration: 4:09.

Chinese electric vehicle startup NIO has hired eight banks for a planned U.S. stock market

registering this year worth up to$ 2 billion, people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters

.

At the top demise of the health risks offering size, the IPO would become the biggest Chinese

schedule in the United States since the $25 billion public move of e-commerce monster

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd in 2014.

Shanghai-based NIO has tapped banks including Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs to work on

the proposed initial public offering of$ 1 billion-$ 2 billion, the people said, slumping

to be identified as the details are not public .

China began promoting electric cars in 2009 and aims to become a prevailing world producer

as it entreats to curb vehicle emissions, boost energy its safety and promote high-tech

manufactures .

NIO counts Asian tech behemoth Tencent Holdings Ltd as its main sponsor, alongside investment

firms Hillhouse Capital Group and Sequoia Capital.

It tries fresh capital from the proposed IPO to finance its expansion and investments in

areas including autonomous driving and artillery engineerings, one of the people said .

The other banks hired are Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse, Citigroup, Deutsche

Bank, JPMorgan and UBS, the people said .

Founded by Chinese internet entrepreneur William Li in 2014 and previously known as NextEV,

NIO is among the first of a raft of Chinese electric vehicle firms to launching a production

vehicle, with many in so far exclusively showing concept automobiles .

It launched sales of its first mass production car -- the ES8 pure-electric, seven-seat sport-utility

IPO schemes.

BAML, Credit Suisse, Citigroup, Deutsche, Goldman, JPMorgan, UBS declined to comment

of millions of dollars into the so-called new energy vehicle sector in the world's biggest

automobile market .

Chinese carmaker Geely, for example, has built up an virtually 10 percentage stake in Daimler

in a$ 9 billion pot, in a push to access the Mercedes-Benz owner's know-how in electrical

and autonomous automobiles .

NIO created more than$ 1 billion in November in its latest fundraising round, led by existing

investor Tencent, appreciating the conglomerate at about$ five billion .

Its schemed IPO could also top that of Chinese logistics company ZTO Express, which in October

2016 created $1.41 billion from an IPO in New York .
