Orientalism is a term coined by Edward Said meaning a Western fantasy world consisting
of a remix of made up parts along with themes from North African, Middle Eastern, East Asian
and South Asian cultures.
Thus, Eastern cultures are depicted as exotic, barbaric, and hedonistic.
Examples of orientalism can be found from the 19th century to modern days.
As elements of orientalism appear in modern popular culture, it is often regarded as a
form of cultural appropriation.
For Example, in 2015, the Metropolitan Museum of art held their annual MET Gala with a theme
of "China Through the Looking Glass".
Many critics saw the celebration of fashion as racist, believing that the theme created
a hierarchy between the eastern and western cultures.
Another example in the realm of fashion is exhibited in the public's response to Gucci's
Fall 2018 show.
Gucci featured white models wearing Sikh turbans causing outrage in the religious community.
As Western culture continues to adopt Eastern elements, Orientalism is celebrated in its
usage yet criticized in its ingenuity.
