The resort town of Avalon, on California's Catalina Island, was named after the Isle

of Avalon of Arthurian legend.

In the early decades of the 1900s, Avalon was a popular destination for Hollywood film

stars like Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, and many more.

In 1920, a song called "Avalon," inspired by the town, was recorded and released

by Al Jolson.

"I found my love in Avalon, beside the bay; I left my love in Avalon, and sailed away."

The song became a big hit in early 1921.

The same year, the number of baby girls in the U.S. named Avalon increased significantly.

The hit song was soon replaced by other hit songs.

As a result, the usage of the name Avalon dropped the very next year.

That said, usage started to rise in the 1980s and since then the name has become relatively

trendy.
