To Graves, NHL Winter Classic opportunity to savor

NEW YORK -- Adam Graves was in his element amid harsh elements Thursday.

The former New York Rangers forward was on hand on a bitterly cold day at Madison Square Park, where the NHL Centennial Fan Arena made one of its final stops as part of a yearlong celebration honoring the Leagues 100th anniversary.

Graves presented a $5,000 check to the American Special Hockey Association as part of the NHLs Hockey is for Everyone program and grew reflective when discussing the 2018 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

The Rangers and Buffalo Sabres will play at Citi Field in New York on New Years Day (1 p.m.

ET; NBC, SN, TVA Sports) in the 10th edition of the outdoor game.

Graves, who works in hockey and business operations for the Rangers and won the Stanley Cup with them in 1994, said the game will take him and others who once skated on frozen ponds, dreaming of playing the NHL, back to their youth.

As kids, regardless of whether you had the privilege of playing in the NHL or not, we all grew up on outdoor rinks and playing to where you couldnt feel your toes and there were icicles on the nets and in the mesh, Graves said.

Thats hockey at its purest.

To be able to celebrate the game, and certainly the growth of the National Hockey League and all of the great players that have been lucky enough to play, to perform on a stage like the Winter Classic is second to none..

Graves played with the Rangers in the Leagues first official outdoor game, against the Los Angeles Kings in a preseason game at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on Sept.

27, 1991.

The ice held up despite a high of 95 degrees in the Kings 5-2 victory.

That was a night Ill never forget, Graves said Thursday, when temperatures were in the mid-20s in New York.

It wasnt easy at that time, in September, to have ice.

They certainly didnt have the technology that they have now.

The National Hockey League does a wonderful job in ice preparation and the preparation for the Winter Classic in all facets.

The conditions are incredible because there are so many people who have perfected the art of the Winter Classic and the art of playing out doors.

Youre breathing in fresh air and youre in the elements.

Whether its cold or a warmer day, or sunny, its an incredible opportunity..

The Rangers and Sabres can revel in the opportunity on New Years Day, with the high temperature expected to be 18 degrees, according to weather.

com.

New York (20-13-4) is five points behind the first-place New Jersey Devils in the Metropolitan Division.

Though the Sabres (9-20-8) are last in the Atlantic Division, Graves said he expects them to be at their best.

You start 0-0, Graves said.

The Sabres are a proud team and is only going to get better with experience.

Theyre developing and when healthy theyre a tough team to contain.

Regardless of where you are in the standings, its a fine line between winning and losing in the National Hockey League.

Theres not a lot of difference between teams so if youre not ready to play on a particular night, then anyone can beat anyone.

With the talent Buffalo has - obviously Jack Eichel leads the way for them -- theyre a team thats getting better and better with each game..

The Rangers will be missing two key players.

Forward Jesper Fast is sidelined with a quadriceps injury and forward Chris Kreider is out indefinitely with a blood clot in his right arm.

Kreiders injury may be a big blow to the Rangers, but Graves said he is confident they will overcome it like they did when center Mika Zibanejad missed nine games with a concussion before returning Dec.

New York went 5-3-1 in his absence.

With a balanced attack, thats how theyve had to overcome, whether its Zibanejad or other injuries, theyre a team that really thrives on the sum of their parts, Graves said.

When you lose a player as impactful as Chris Kreider, you have to depend on each other.

No one person can try and fill that physical and speed void.

Everyone has to try to fill the void as a group..

Winter Classic will be ode to New York

NEW YORK -- The 2018 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will pay tribute to the cityscape where it will be played.

Citi Field, the home of Major League Baseballs New York Mets, is the host of the 2018 Winter Classic, the 10th anniversary of the Leagues traditional New Years Day game, between the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres on Monday (1 p.m.

ET; NBC, SN, TVA Sports, NHL.TV).

It will capture an urban landscape featuring real New York City yellow taxi cabs moving around a grid of streets adjacent to the rink.

The theme continues the annual efforts to tie the game presentation into the area where each outdoor game is played.

Last season, the Winter Classic in St.

Louis was linked to the Gateway Arch, which loomed just outside the outfield wall of Busch Stadium.

The 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles had beach volleyball, yoga and the marching band from the University of Southern California all featured prominently during the game between the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks.

Here in New York, we are theming it to New York City streets, taxi cabs and everything that goes along with that, NHL executive vice president and chief content officer Steve Mayer said Wednesday.

Its going to be amazing to see and there will be no question from the look and feel of the game that it is being played in the city..

Though the playing surface has been installed, work on the cityscape is just beginning.

It is a transformative process that requires vision and many, many hours of work.

I will invite anybody to find a blade of grass, Mayer said, looking out at the playing surface covered by decking.

We cover every inch of the stadium and transform the stadium so that when people do walk in and they have their ticket -- and even if they come to 50 Mets games a year -- they are watching something that is completely different than anything that they have experienced at Citi Field.

The entertainment will also have a New York feel.

The Goo Goo Dolls, who will play during an intermission, are originally from Buffalo and a nod to the Sabres, who played the Pittsburgh Penguins in the inaugural Winter Classic in 2008.

Max Weinberg, the drummer from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band that was formed in New Jersey and came to national attention performing at clubs in New York City, is putting together a house band to play throughout the game.

Ace Frehley, guitarist of the seminal rock band KISS, which got its start in New York and played its first show in Queens, will open the game with a performance.

Though much remains to be done on the game-presentation side, the rink build is ahead of schedule, according to Mayer.

Near-perfect rink-building weather -- no precipitation and sufficient cloud cover -- the past several days has allowed the army of workers at Citi Field to get the ice surface down and the boards up.

Well be ready to play hockey on Monday, Mayer said.

Everything is ahead of schedule.

The weather in New York has been excellent.

Its a little cold, but we are used to that.

When we do one of these outdoor games, we are prepared for these things..

In the next few days, lines and logos must be put on the ice and the plexiglass still needs to be installed.

There is snow in the forecast for Saturday, but it should not impact the rink build.

On Sunday, the practice day for the Sabres and Rangers, it is expected to be sunny and 21 degrees Fahrenheit.

For Monday, the forecast for the game calls for sunny skies with a high of 19 degrees and a steady breeze.
