The Dark Side of Blue Light — How Tablets, Computers and Smartphones are Making Us Fat, Sick and Stu - Duration: 7:48.

The Dark Side of Blue Light How Tablets, Computers and Smartphones are Making Us Fat,

Sick and Stupid

By Carolanne Wright

Scientists have long known that exposure to artificial light at night has far-reaching

negative mental and physiological health effects. But now the dangers are accelerating at an

astounding pace, largely due to the widespread use of laptops, computers, smartphones and

tablets throughout the day and into the evening.

Despite that, you dont need to become a Luddite and shun all your devices to promote

health. Instead, we need to approach their use in an intelligent and informed manner.

Here are a few ways we can minimize the risk, while still enjoying the technology.

Disrupted sleep isnt only annoying, it can be life-threatening.

Everyone has had times where sleep seemed beyond reach, whether from excessive worries

rattling around in our heads, young children, a big meal before bed or any other number

of reasons. Having a one-off issue with sleep isnt the end of the world. It only becomes

a problem when its chronic mainly because it disrupts our 24-hour circadian rhythms,

which are responsible for regulating a range of important physiological functions. Disrupting

these rhythms is not something you want to mess around with if you would like to be sane,

creative and enjoy robust health. And yet, a majority of teenagers and adults are inadvertently

upsetting these cycles with the use of personal devices. How?

In a nutshell, our circadian rhythms are tied to the rising and setting of the sun. When

the sun goes down, this signals to our body that its time to prepare for restful and

rejuvenating sleep. The same for when the sun rises although this time, were being

signaled to launch into wakefulness and the activities of the day. With the advent of

electricity and interior lighting, we disrupted this important cycle by signaling to the brain

that it was still daylight, when in fact, it was not. We stayed up later, instead of

getting much needed sleep. Then fluorescent bulbs, LEDs, personal devices and other

blue light emitting electronics entered the scene, causing further problems. In turn,

our short term memory, creativity, learning performance and health took a sharp nosedive.

On top of that, we started to pack on the pounds and began to see an increase of diabetes,

cardiovascular disease, cancer, Parkinsons and Alzheimers, multiple sclerosis, kidney

disease, depression, anxiety, headaches, behavioral problems in children the list could continue

forever.

Sorry to say, but the situation has grown much worse over the last few decades as our

exposure to artificial light has increased exponentially, mainly from our devices that

emit blue light. The problem with blue light is that we just get so darn much of it throughout

the day by being indoors and under artificial light, all the while glued to computers and

smartphones. Then we return to our artificially lit homes, sit in front of a glowing television

or read a book/surf the web on our tablet. Before we finally flop down into bed for a

fitful night of sleep, we have to check email on our smartphone. One. Last. Time. Exposing

ourselves to yet another blast of blue light. And dont even get me started on the glaring

street lamp right outside the window. You get the picture.

Harvard Health explains why blue light is particularly harmful in the evening:

While light of any kind can suppress the secretion of melatonin, blue light at night

does so more powerfully. Harvard researchers and their colleagues conducted an experiment

comparing the effects of 6.5 hours of exposure to blue light to exposure to green light of

comparable brightness. The blue light suppressed melatonin for about twice as long as the green

light and shifted circadian rhythms by twice as much (3 hours vs. 1.5 hours).

What we really need during the day is full-spectrum light like what we get from the sun, whereas

nighttime requires more subdued, reddish lighting, such as what a pink salt lamp emits. But because

we are leaning so heavily on the blue side of the light spectrum 24/7, we actually need

to compensate more with the red spectrum think sunrises, sunsets, open fires, candlelight.

(Also see: Why You Should Have a Himalayan Crystal Salt Lamp in Every Room of Your House.)

What to do? We cant all sit in front of a bonfire every night and have our homes lit

exclusively with candles or spend our days outside under the sun as wonderful

as that would be. Giving up our devices isnt an option either. Fear not. There are painless

methods for balancing the situation without having to sacrifice our technological best

friends.

Simple Hacks for Outsmarting Blue Light Exposure One of the easiest and least expensive

ways for reducing your blue light time is to download an app like F.lux or Iris to

shift the color spectrum of your computer/laptop screen. Its a brilliantly straightforward

method that automatically senses when the sun is setting or rising in your location

and then adjusts the screen to a warmer tone in the evening and a brighter, bluer tone

at dawn. I personally use Iris because it gives me more control and options with brightness

and tone spectrum. I also adjust it to maintain a warmer tone during the day. Experts in the

field recommend around a 2000K red spectrum during the day, 1600K or lower for nighttime.

When Im doing graphics, watching a film or other work where I need accurate color,

its easy to pause Iris with the icon in the tool bar at the top of the screen. The

same for F.lux.

If you own an Apple product, the iOS system has a built-in feature called Night Shift,

which can be found under the Display & Brightness tab in settings. It gives you an option to

automatically shift the color of the display to the warmer end of the spectrum from sunset

to sunrise. You can choose which level of color suits you best.

More hardcore warm light enthusiasts will don special glasses (such as these) after

sunset to block out all blue light, including that from compact fluorescent lights and LED

bulbs. Some will even go so far as to replace all their lightbulbs at night with red ones.

I have to admit, though, this seems akin to creating the same red-hued environment of

a dominatrix den, something I would certainly like to avoid. I think Ill stick with the

blue light blocking glasses and/or pink salt lamps.

Heres one last nugget of wisdom from sleep researchers: simply turn off your television,

computer, smartphone and tablet one hour before bedtime and read an old-fashioned book by

an old-school incandescent light. Imagine that.

Dark Shadows of God - CrowdFunding appeal - Duration: 2:09.

Hi there I'm Alicia from Berlin I'm 15 years old and I create graphic arts

for almost a year I've been working very hard on my first big graphic novel Dark Shadows of God

and its first volume is almost finished. It has 5 chapters and about 150

pages. I tried to create a very interesting world with beautiful and interesting

characters. Sometimes the story is humorous and funny, sometimes really dark

and sad. The story is about a boy Tommy, who lives in the world after the great

war with Dark Gods. He studies in an Academy for children with special

abilities and tries his best to get into a squad, which fights evil, that is left

after the war with Gods. It's almost finished and to publish it I need your

help. I prepared some special gifts for you. It's the book and also I can make your

graphic portrait or concept art with one of my own characters. You can check them

to the right. I would appreciate any help on this project and if you liked it

please share it with your friends. I believe, together we can make it!

Thank you very much for your support. See you! :)

Tasting Dark Horse, Covey Run, & Whitehaven Wines | Episode #030 - Duration: 8:45.

Today we're going to "double down" with Dark Horse's new wine

and I'm tasting through other great wines.

Thanks for joining.

Hi.

I'm Tim from Elma Wine and Liquor.

Thanks for joining us today.

I'm going to be tasting through five wines.

I'll give you some notes and tell you a little bit about each one.

We're going to start with this New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc called Whitehaven.

Most New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs

have a very strong grapefruit flavor and aroma to them.

This wine, it does have a little bit of grapefruit and some citrus

on the nose but it also has some peach aromas to it as well

which makes it a little bit unique and a little bit different.

It's good to see-- You might be able to see from the color.

It's very pale, very white colored.

Some Sauvignon Blancs have a little bit of a straw tinge to them.

It does have some grapefruit on the palette as well

and a little bit of citrus notes

but it's not overpoweringly grapefruit or citrus.

A little bit of acidity on the finish.

It kind of grabs your tongue

and it cleanses your palette and makes it ready for a nice bite of food.

A very good wine, very well balanced, easy drinking,

goes down well,

very nice Sauvignon Blanc.

Up next, we have the Dark Horse Rosé.

As you may have seen in the previous video, Rosés are drier wines.

This one is no exception.

Dark Horse has been doing some great wines at great values lately.

Their Rosé is something that we do a lot with in the summer.

Very light-colored, very pinkish, very light berries like strawberries

and some raspberries on the nose.

Some berry on the palette along with a little bit of watermelon,

a little bit of light acidity, just a touch of sweetness

but it's mostly from those red berries that you get at the beginning.

Again, a very well-balanced wine and a really great value for the price.

Next up, we have Love Noir Pinot Noir.

The brand is actually called Love Noir and it's a great Pinot Noir wine.

They do blend some other grapes into this,

make it a little bit darker and heavier than the traditional Pinot Noir.

As you can see.

A traditional 100% straight Pinot Noir,

a lot of times you can see right through the wine

when you hold it in your glass.

This obviously have some weight to it.

On the nose, you get something like plums,

almost blueberry or blackberry aromas.

At the beginning of the sip,

you get a lot of the berry sweetness flavors

and it's very smooth and easy drinking.

But then, it evolves in your mouth and the tannins come in which are that

little bit of harsh, grabby feeling on your tongue

that dries out the wine nicely.

It's almost a little too harsh when it grabs you.

The finish is pretty nice.

It smooths out again a little bit but that bite in the middle

is a little bit strong.

But overall, not a bad wine.

It's been quite a popular wine for us, it goes over really well.

I think, just that easy drinking nature of it is what people like.

Next up is a new one from Dark Horse.

This is a limited release called Double Down Red Blend.

They are using some grapes that you might not have heard of

before including Tannat and Teroldego.

Tannat is a up and coming grape from Uruguay.

I've been seeing more and more of them lately.

We don't currently have any in the store

but it is something on my radar and should be on your radar.

If you happen to see it on a restaurant menu or something,

it might be worth a try if you like dry red grapes.

This, you can see from the color, is very dark, very rich,

very fresh aroma, very fruity aroma.

Definitely some red fruit,

plums, almost a little watermelon on the nose.

A lot of jaminess up front.

When I say jaminess, I mean like taking a spoonful of jam,

but just at the beginning.

It does change.

The tannins from some of those grapes really kick in.

It's very strong, very powerful wine, kind of half way through there,

after the jaminess clears away.

Get a little bit of earthiness, a little bit of almost like tobacco

or leather in there as well and the finish is short and quick.

There's nothing lingering or doesn't leave your mouth feeling a little dry,

but it's worth a try if you're into dry red blends.

You might want to give that a try before it disappears

because it is a limited release.

Last up, I'm going to finish with Covey Run Riesling.

This is from the Columbia Valley in Washington State

and I am finishing with this white wine because it is on the sweeter side

and I didn't want to ruin my palate for the other drier wines

leaving residual sugar in my mouth.

I get a lot of pear aromas on the nose for this one.

You can kind of smell the sweetness as well

but it smells like fresh, really overripe pears.

A lot of sugar at the beginning,

especially after sipping on some of these drier reds.

More pears and some stone fruit like peach or apricot type flavors

as well mixed in there and it has a little bit of acidity

in the finish which is again that feeling

that grips your tongue and cleans off your tongue

which makes this a great wine to drink with food.

Rieslings are known, especially, to pair with spicy dishes,

especially with Asian food, but this would really go well with anything.

That's it for our wines today.

We had the White Haven Sauvignon Blanc, the Dark Horse Dry Rose,

the Love Noir Pinot Noir, the Dark Horse Double Down Red Blend,

and the Covey Run Riesling.

We really appreciate you joining us

and I really look forward to your comments and feedback

on the videos and if you have any other questions about wine or liquor,

please feel free to ask in the comments below.

Thanks for joining.

Cheers.
