The ECB may be looking very closely at the latest U.S.-China trade fight that is

taking place today, do you think the ECB and other central bankers should be

worried about the global impact here?

Well, you're right, I mean, that this is something that it's a game,

that's being played by two parties but it's going to affect everybody,

if it does blow out, I mean, from our perspective, it doesn't still feel

like a game of chickens that the U.S. President is playing,

he believes that he can prise open the Chinese economy, which has long been

one of the more protectionist major economies out there,

and he believes he can do it by playing chicken and in a sense it's kind of

maybe cultivated kind of wild impulses, it's almost perfectly designed for this game,

because, you know, the dominant strategy of chicken chicken

is you know throw your steering wheel out the window and look crazy and

I think that's kind of what we're playing. The big restraint on this for us

is obviously midterms in November, how much is Donald Trump, President Trump

kind of want to self-inflict material damage on the very parts of the

economy that turned to him in 2016 ahead of November midterms.

William it's interesting that you mentioned that it's a theme that we've

been picking up throughout this hour in terms of what kind of pushback the

President's really going to see there, I think you mentioned and the game of

chicken could be used to describe not just his trade policy, but his foreign

policy as well, do you think he's going to really garner that support as we go

into the midterms? Because there is a lot of pushback within the party even now.

No, I think that's right, you know, this is the problem that he faces and this is

the problem that Xi Jinping doesn't face, my sincerity is that

Xi Jinping doesn't have to face electoral accountability in too long

after we said, in some senses and this is where Trump is possibly weak in this

game is chicken and this is a very corporate White House as you know,

it's very heavy in sort of people having business experience and they will,

will have played this game you know, the art of a deal and

it's more difficult to play in politics generally, because you're playing against

many different competing institutions it's often quite difficult to discern

what is the dominant strategy and often these games just peter out a little bit

of the political level, they're far more

effective or tend to be far more effective, board to board, rather than

country to country and I think that may be the problem that America comes up against.

South Korea, U.S. suspend Freedom Guardian exercise set for August - Duration: 2:21.

It's been confirmed that Seoul and Washington will suspend the annual military drills that

had been slated for August.

U.S. President Trump had said in his tweet a day ago, however,...that the exercises can

restart immediately,... if the denuclearization talk with North Korea breaks down.

Our Park Ji-won has more.

Seoul's defense ministry announced early Tuesday morning that South Korea and the U.S. will

suspend the Freedom Guardian military exercises,... the annual joint defense drills set for August.

The defense ministry's statement said the decision came after close consultation between

the two countries.

The ministry said however,... a decision regarding other annual joint military drills,... like

the Key Resolve and Foul Eagle exercises,... conducted in the spring every year,.. hasn't

been reached yet.

South Korea's defense ministry spokesperson Choi Hyun-soo told reporters, during Tuesday's

regular press briefing on Tuesday morning that South Korea and the U.S. are closely

working together,... to ensure the ironclad security of both countries.

The decision comes a matter of days after U.S. President Trump said he wanted to halt

what he called "war games" on the peninsula,... saying that they are expensive and provocative.

He first made those remarks during the press conference that followed last week's summit

with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

But Trump also stressed, in a tweet sent out a day ago,... that the military exercises

can start immediately if the denuclearization talks with the North break down.

The Ulchi Freedom Guardian is a large-scale joint military exercise,... conducted every

late August for around two weeks.

It has its origin in the Focus Lens exercise conducted by the U.S.-led U.N. Command in

1954,... after the Korean War.

In 1976, South Korea's annual Ulchi exercises, and the Focus Lens were integrated,... to

create a joint military exercise called the Ulchi Focus Lens, the name of which was changed

in 2008 to Ulchi-Freedom Guardian.

Last year's Ulchi Freedom Guardian was held for about 11 days,... involving over 17-thousand

U.S. and 50-thousand South Korean troops.

Trump blames Democrats for "horrible" U.S. immigration laws - Duration: 1:47.

Now for a look at stories making headlines around the world and we start in the United

States.

President Trump has accused the Democrats of obstructing his efforts to reform immigration

law.

For more on this and other international news we turn to Ro Aram…

Aram… what exactly did President Trump say?

Well Mark…

Speaking at the White House on Monday, Trump said the Democrats were the ones responsible

for what he called horrible immigration laws.

He also said he would not let America be a migrant camp.

"…..Immigration is the fault and all of the problems that we're having, because we

cannot get them to sign legislation.

We cannot get them even to the negotiating table.

And I say it's very strongly the Democrats' fault, their obstruction and they're really

obstructionist and they are obstructing………..

"The United States will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility,

it won't be.

You look at what's happening in Europe, you look at what's happening in other places we

can't allow that to happen to the United States.

Not on my watch…."

President Trump's so-called "zero tolerance" immigration policy, which was introduced two

months ago by his administration, has faced widespread criticism both from Democrats and

some Republicans.

It has led to nearly two thousand children being held separately from parents who have

been arrested under Washington's "zero-tolerance" policy for illegal border crossings.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen rejected criticism accusing her department

of child abuse, saying conditions were of a "high standard."

Wilbur Ross on trade: US is closing the gap with China- Lou Dobbs - Duration: 10:19.

President Trump today imposing new tariffs 50 billion dollars of Chinese

goods to be under those tariffs the president vowing to slash our nation's

multi-billion dollar trade deficit with China all while protecting the American

worker the trade war was started many years ago by them in the United States

lost well no there is no trade war they've taken so much so last year three

hundred and seventy five billion dollars in trade deficit we had a 300 with China

we had overall over eight hundred billion dollars over a period of years

each year close to 800 billion dollars in losses on trade not gonna happen

anymore it's not gonna happen President Trump the only national leader

on the face of the globe who is calling for balanced international trade it used

to be the stuff of esoteric discussions amongst academics and a few people who

work for non-government organizations joining us now our special guest tonight

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross at the forefront of the president's trade

policies it's great to see you think of to see you Lou fifty billion dollars of

goods will be subject to those tariffs effective July 6 yes the end and the

national political press not necessarily the business press but much of the

business press they are cackling there they're wringing their hands they're

wailing about a trade war we just heard the president say and he's by the way

the first person to say it out loud some time ago we've already lost the trade

war well we're regaining territory very

rapidly these same people had hand-wringing when we put the tariffs on

washing machines they had the same hand wringing when we put the tariffs on

solar panels they had the same hand wringing when we put it on steel and

aluminum and guess what factories are growing up in the u.s. making those

products the sky hasn't flown yet have fallen in fact the Federal Reserve

is projecting for this quarter a growth economic growth listen to this 4.8% GDP

growth for the quarter that's extraordinary

oh it's it's amazing will remember the Democrats were saying one and a half

percent oh yes maybe 2 percent the new normal they styled it under a lobbyist

to code the new miserable exactly exactly so this is mice's exciting stuff

because the business press gets to hold forth on trade wars and retaliation in

fact we're talking about a meniscal percentage of international trade that

will be involved in these tariffs in the spar and the trade relationships

themselves don't amount to an overwhelming segment of GDP for most

countries no in fact our total exports to China are only about a hundred fifty

billion dollars that's under 1% of our GD p-- we'd like to change that nurse

we're going to change it I'm gonna change well we're not going to change it

are we to making us look further like an agrarian nation that's a third world

country I mean our leading products soybeans waste material I mean when you

look at what we're exporting you just wonder who is the advanced nation here

is it the United States or is it China oh no it's very much the u.s. because of

the hundred and fifty billion that we export to China about 20 billion is

agricultural products right so but is that soybeans a lot of that is soybeans

but what we're targeting here is high tech we've had an increasing deficit in

high-tech trade with China year after year for many many years now using

materials stolen from the US you know I I can't help but think I am you have

been out front talking to the press explaining is you know I think in

terrific terms the president with this great access he has directly to the

American people I was trying to think have any other president who could have

functioned with this explaining what's happening with trade because it does get

complicated at the margin at least and Americans are not used to having to deal

with it but balancing trade is critically important most Americans I

believe I don't even believe the people in in my craft what used to be a craft

journalism comprehend that trade deficits cut into economic growth our

GDP is reduced as a result of running those trade deficits the national

savings rate is reduced as well and that all that relationship and that

importance gary comb by the way was quoted the other day and one elegant

business outlet a business news outlet he's saying trade deficits don't matter

he's talking the same nonsense of yesteryear that allowed us to trade

mindlessly as the president has put it with dumb government not acknowledging

the truth which is they do matter well trade deficits only don't matter if you

don't have them right we have a trade deficit and it does matter

absolutely and Wilbur Ross is working hard for the President and for the

American people to make sure that we do capture that balanced and reciprocal

trade the president is insisting on a much to the delight of Theresa May

angler Merkel the European Union and of course China well but they've joined us

you know the Japan and the EU joined us in a couple of trilateral statements on

this very topic of intellectual property in techno they ought to and the Chinese

to accept oh that's right they're stealing about six hundred billion

dollars worth of intellectual property a year in addition to that three hundred

and fifty billion dollar deficit and we the Espionage that's being carried out

here we won't even get into very quickly the the NAFTA discussions at at least a

pause if not an end you're probably you're a sense of the prospects well

there's a pause because you have the Mexican elections coming

around the 8th of July right it's too close to that election from the China

what Lopez Obrador it's gotta have uh well it looks as though he will probably

win but whether he wins or he doesn't they still need the u.s. they still need

to make a deal with this maybe even here they should be grown-ups actually take

responsibility for their borders and balance trade wouldn't that be nice

well it would be but if they maybe would mention illegal immigration if they need

a little encouragement the president's gonna give it to them I've noticed him

cheering them on as well as his friend Justin Trudeau it seems like the message

is being received and thank you very and Robert thanks so much for being with us

we're so nice to be on again it's terrific to have you here thanks so much

and thanks for all you're doing thank you president Trump tonight is

under assault by his usual critics and relentless opponents and enemies whether

the dims the rhinos the Nacional left-wing media or the deep state no

matter this president has demonstrated over and over that he can handle all of

them and all at the same time if need be look at what's happened since he took

office the FBI and its director intended to make Hillary Clinton President of the

United States how did that work out the FBI and the Justice Department intended

to stop Trump's presidential bid and stop it cold they failed and they failed

miserably and President Trump has succeeded and succeeded in extraordinary

terms he has in less than a year and a half

become a historic president so successful that it's ludicrous to try to

list his achievements because there are so many and the list grows by the day

and on the same day that he and his administration announced tariffs on

fifty billion dollars of Chinese imports President Trump makes it clear that he

won't support a wrongheaded weak-kneed immigration bill supported by so-called

moderates in the house Reid Schumer like liberals one of two bills headed to the

floor that RINO Ryan wrote behind closed doors

unfortunately a second bill created by the same lame-duck speaker who created

the Schumer like liberal bill the same Rhino who represents only the

establishment interests of the globalists the Chamber of Commerce the

Business Roundtable the Koch brothers in Wall Street you

know the ones who created most of the problems they own Rhino Ryan and here

they come again president Trump is to be credited for

his demand to solve the immigration issue but Congress isn't solving the

illegal immigration issue and surely isn't securing our borders with this

legislation

First Muslim Governor About To Take Over The State Just Made Terrifying Announcement To Non-Muslims - Duration: 5:24.

Radical Islamic Terror is real.

Middle Eastern countries experience it every day.

They constantly live in fear, and in terror.

Many European countries are experiencing it as well after millions of Syrian refugees

were brought in after war spread across Syria.

News outlets reported that some ISIS fighters might have made it through with these immigrants,

and anyone in their path might be in grave danger.

This didn't stop Barack Obama from welcoming many to the United States.

Many of these immigrants were not screened, there was no background on them.

Just let free in the United States to try, and start a better life for themselves.

The majority of these refugees are harmless and are just trying to escape being chopped

to pieces by militants, but some are here to recruit, and train sympathizers of their

"Cause".

Michigan chose Donald J. Trump over Hillary Clinton 47.06% to 47.03% in the 2016 Presidental

Race, Making Michigan a battleground state for the 2018 elections.

Michigan is heading to the polls this November to elect a new governor.

Michigan currently has a Republican governor, Rick Synder.

In November 2015, Snyder declared his opposition to permitting Syrian refugee relocation to

the state of Michigan.

That caused a backlash from the left wing in Michigan, but it really caused a flare

in Dearborn, Michigan.

Dearborn is a Muslim dominated city.

The disapproval of the governor's actions was high.

Abdul El-Sayed felt he needed to rise up, and go to war with Michigan Republicans.

Some background on Abdul El-Sayed:

El-Sayed was born in Detriot, Michigan to parents who immigrated from Egypt.

El-Sayed was dominating in high school sports as he was the team captain of each sport he

played.

El-Sayed ended up going to the University of Michigan.

He then attended Oriel College, Oxford as a Rhodes scholar.

After practicing medicine, and helping the community, Detriot Mayor Mike Duggan appointed

El-Sayed to the health Director Of Detriot position.

Now, El-Sayed is running for governor.

Michigan Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed on Thursday called for Republican

rivals to condemn "Islamophobia" and "racism" after comments by GOP hopeful Patrick Colbeck

during a rare forum featuring all seven candidates from the two major parties.

"You may not hate Muslims, but Muslims hate you," El-Sayed said after imploring the

GOP field.

The tense exchange came after Colbeck, a state senator and Canton Township Republican, reiterated

his disputed and unsubstantiated claims that El-Sayed has "affiliations" with the Muslim

Brotherhood.

The only proof he offered was that Shelby Township Democrat was part of the Muslim Students

Association while attending the University of Michigan.

The national student group was named 27 years ago in an "explanatory memo" by a Muslim

Brotherhood operative and some chapters have "hosted al-Qaida leaders" for campus speeches,

Colbeck claimed.

El-Sayed is a practicing Muslim who has previously denied any affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood

but on Thursday refused to dignify Colbeck's comments, even after calling on Republican

candidates Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, Attorney General Bill Schuette and Dr. Jim Hines to

disavow them.

When Lyndon B. Johnson first ran for Congress, he "insinuated his opponent was having relationships

with animals just to hear him deny it," El-Sayed said after the forum.

"I'm not interested in denying something that's just not true."

Instead of responding directly to Colbeck and his claims about Sharia religious law

creeping into the United States, El-Sayed noted that he or any candidate elected governor

will have to take an oath to swear and uphold the state and federal constitutions.

It "guarantees me the right to pray as I choose to pray" and says that "no religious

test shall be held over someone aiming to serve under this constitution," El-Sayed

said.

"That is an incredible document."

Colbeck denied that his repeated warnings of "civilization jihad" are rooted in

racism or white supremacism.

"I love Muslims.

It's not an issue.

The issue is terrorist organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood," he said.

None of the other Republican candidates for governor addressed Colbeck's comments during

the forum.

But Calley said after the event that he does "not agree with what Sen. Colbeck said."

Colbeck made similar comments in a video that surfaced last month and was posted online

by The United West of Florida, which has been called an anti-Muslim hate group by the Southern

Poverty Law Center.

The Michigan GOP distanced itself from Colbeck's previous comments, with a spokeswoman saying

the party is not interested in "peddling any conspiracy theories."

–Detriot News

Can you imagine if a Christian had said "You may not hate Christians, but Christians hate

you" what the media would do?

It would be non-stop news until the election was over, and El-Sayed had won.

They would have gone to extra links to bring down any chance of Republicans keeping ahold

of the governorship.

This is the America that we live in now thanks to Barack Obama.

President Trump wasn't elected by "luck," God sent him here to protect us from the onslaught

of Muslim hatred towards the West.

Trump Just SHUT IT DOWN! U.S. Will NOT Become a 'Migrant Camp' - Duration: 4:40.

President Trump is refusing to cave to hypocritical liberal hysteria over immigration laws that

have been on the books for years.

After a picture emerged of " caged illegal kids" from the Obama-era, liberals have

suddenly taken up the torch for so-called "tortured illegal kids."

The truth of the matter, is that many of these kids are pawns, being used by adults to gain

access to the United States.

Furthermore, the kids, who are housed in shelters, have a better quality of life than the 13

million impoverished American kids – and all on the taxpayers dime.

From The Hill

A defiant President Trump on Monday defended his administration's policy of separating

undocumented children from their parents at the southern border, saying the nation must

not become a "camp" for migrants.

"The United States will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding

facility — it won't be," Trump said at the White House during a meeting for his

space council.

"Not on my watch," he added.

Trump again blamed Democrats for the problem, though the separations are a result of a directive

issued by his own administration earlier this year.

"I say it's very strongly the Democrats' fault," he said Monday.

"If the Democrats would sit down instead of obstructing, we could have something done

very quickly," Trump added later.

"Good for the children, good for the country, good for the world."

The remarks come as Trump is facing mounting pressure to change the policy, which his administration

implemented in an effort to deter illegal immigration.

The Department of Homeland Security says nearly 2,000 minors have been separated from their

adult guardians in the six weeks following the administration's announcement of a "zero

tolerance policy" against illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The separations have triggered a nationwide outcry from Republicans and Democrats who

say they are inhumane, and Trump and his top aides have struggled to explain the policy.

Trump earlier Monday doubled down on the controversial policy in a string of tweets while calling

on Congress to change laws to end the policy, a sign he is unmoved by the criticism.

In his remarks later in the day, the president sought to justify his efforts to ramp up immigration

enforcement by claiming "murderers" and "thieves" who are illegally entering the

U.S. are bringing "death and destruction."

He also suggested his hands are tied when it comes to addressing the child separation

issue.

"We could have an immigration bill, we could have child separation — we're stuck with

these horrible laws," he said.

"They're horrible laws.

What's happening is so sad, so sad.

And it can be taken care of quickly, beautifully and we'll have safety."

Trump is trying to pressure Democrats in the House into working with their Republican counterparts

to pass an immigration bill.

But the two measures drafted by GOP lawmakers, one of which deals with child separation,

also face internal opposition.

The president is scheduled to meet with House Republicans on Tuesday to discuss the immigration

issue, a meeting in which he could hear criticism of his administration's handling of the

issue.

The child separations stem from the Justice Department's decision in April to prosecute

illegal border crossers to the fullest extent of the law.

That has resulted in a drastic uptick in people who are being jailed as they await trial,

and as a result, have their children taken away from them and placed in detention centers.

Trump administration officials have offered up often-contradictory explanations for the

separations, frustrating critics and supporters alike.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday told a gathering of sheriffs that "we do not

want to separate parents from their children," but a legislative fix is needed.

"If we build the wall, if we pass legislation to end the lawlessness, we won't face these

terrible choices," he said.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen also defended the policy,

saying "we will not apologize for doing our job."

Her comments, however, came one day after she faced criticism for tweeting her department

does "not have a policy of separating families at the border.

Period."

A wide variety of public figures have called on Trump to end child separation, including

former first lady Laura Bush, who seldom weighs in on policy issues.

"I live in a border state.

I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance

policy is cruel.

It is immoral.

And it breaks my heart," Bush wrote in a Washington Post op-ed.

Trump blames Democrats for "horrible" U.S. immigration laws - Duration: 1:57.

U.S. President Donald Trump has accused the Democrats of obstructing his efforts to reform

America's immigration law.

His comments come as his administration faces growing outrage over the forced separation

of undocumented immigrant children from their parents.

Ro Aram reports.

Speaking at the White House on Monday, President Trump said the Democrats were the ones responsible

for what he called "horrible" immigration laws.

He also said he would not let America be a migrant camp.

"…..Immigration is the fault and all of the problems that we're having, because we

cannot get them to sign legislation.

We cannot get them even to the negotiating table.

And I say it's very strongly the Democrats' fault, their obstruction and they're really

it won't be.

You look at what's happening in Europe, you look at what's happening in other places we

can't allow that to happen to the United States.

Not on my watch…."

President Trump's so-called "zero tolerance" immigration policy, which was introduced two

months ago by his administration, has faced widespread criticism both from both sides

of the aisle.

It involves arresting all adults who are caught trying to enter the United States illegally,

including those seeking asylum.

The policy has resulted in nearly two-thousand children being taken from their parents and

put in government facilities.

Asked if such measures amount to child abuse, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen

insisted conditions at the detention centers are up to par.

The White House said it doesn't like the family separations, but added that migrants who arrive

illegally simply won't be released.

Important US Sites and Landmarks - Duration: 3:09.

It's time to explore some of the important sites and landmarks in the United States,

so let's get on the road.

Starting out in Knoxville, we're going to travel 1,800 miles to the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is located in northern Arizona.

The canyon can be as wide as 18 miles and as deep as one mile.

The Colorado River flows 277 miles through the canyon.

Let's get back in the car and drive to California.

The Golden Gate Bridge is located in San Francisco.

The bridge took four years to build and was finished in 1937.

It is 1.7 miles long and 746 feet tall.

That is as long as 25 football fields and as tall as a 75 story building.

Now it's time to drive East to South Dakota.

Mount Rushmore is a monument located in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

It took 24 years to carve the faces of four presidents into the mountain.

The four presidents are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson,

Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

These four faces bring over 3 million visitors to South Dakota every year

Now that you have seen Thomas Jefferson's face,

let's head south to see a memorial dedicated to him.

The Gateway Arch, sometimes called the Gateway to the West,

is located in Saint Louis, Missouri.

It is a memorial to Thomas Jefferson's role

in expanding the u.s. westward.

The arch is 630 feet tall or about 63 stories high.

It is the tallest man-made monument in the United States.

Our next stop is a monument about half the size of the Gateway Arch.

The Statue ofLiberty is located on Liberty Island near New York City.

It was given to the US by France as a gift of friendship and was

dedicated in 1886.

Today it is a symbol of freedom and democracy.

Speaking of democracy we are now going to the capitol of the United States.

The White House is located in Washington DC.

Every president has lived there except for George Washington.

It was completed in the year 1800, which was after Washington left office.

To wrap up our trip, let's head home to Tennessee.

Natchez Trace State Park is located in West Tennessee and was founded in the

1930s under President Franklin D Roosevelt.

The opening of this park

helped many people find jobs during a time that they really needed work.

In fact, many of the buildings used are still there.

I hope you enjoyed traveling across the United States to see some important sights and landmarks

U.S. and South Korea 'on the same page,' vice foreign minister says - Duration: 9:20.

JUDY WOODRUFF: It has been a week since President Trump met with North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un.

They signed a document that laid out broad principles in which the United States would

provide security guarantees to North Korea, and North Korea committed to eliminating its

nuclear weapons.

But the agreement didn't have a timeline or provide any specific details of what comes

next.

So, what are the next steps?

For that, we turn to South Korea's first vice minister of foreign affairs, Lim Sung-nam.

He's a veteran diplomat.

He has dealt extensively with North Korea.

Minister Lim, thank you very much for being here.

So, your president, Mr. Moon, called this summit a great victory.

He said it is a huge step forward.

And yet a number of American officials who have dealt with North Korea in the past said

they didn't see very much in the way of specifics.

They don't really understand that North Korea has made a serious commitment to denuclearize.

What makes your president so positive?

LIM SUNG-NAM, South Korean First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs: Well, you should first

think about the history of the relationship between the DPRK and the United States.

For more than 70 years, there has been no summit meeting between the two countries.

And for more than 70 years, there has not been any kind of meaningful agreement between

the two countries at the level of the heads of state.

And now that the Singapore declaration has set declaration set out big principles for

going ahead with denuclearization, I think the two leaders have laid a meaningful foundation

on which to further build the process of denuclearization.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Are there tangible signs that you have seen that tell you North Korea is

serious about carrying through with this?

I ask because the statement they issued at the end of the summit was, what, one-and-a-half-pages

long.

And some of the diplomatic language in there was the same language that had been in previous

statements.

So what was -- what is new?

What is tangible?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Well, for instance, they had been taking unilateral actions, such as shutting

down their nuclear testing sites.

And they vowed to dismantle the key rocket engine testing site as well.

And they also released three American hostages without getting any kind of a concessions

from the U.S. side.

So these actions do support the sincerity of the North Koreans in going ahead with denuclearization

down the road.

JUDY WOODRUFF: So what do you see as the next steps?

What is going to happen next?

The North Koreans put out a statement after the summit.

They describe what they see unfolding next.

What do you see?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Well, if you look at carefully the Singapore document, the two leaders agreed

to fully and speedily implement the agreement.

And they also agreed on the need for the speedy follow-up negotiations.

So, I'm sure and I do hope that, in the very near future, there will be follow-up negotiations

at the working level to implement the Singapore agreement.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Are there working level meetings going on now?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Right now, I don't think so.

But, in the near future, I do believe there will be some meetings.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Do you -- will South Korea be involved in those?

Are those just between North Korea and the U.S.?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Those will be the working level negotiations between the United States and

the DPRK, but we also have the inter-Korean talks with Pyongyang.

JUDY WOODRUFF: The leader of North Korea has indicated that he is prepared to denuclearize,

at least in general terms.

President Trump is saying the nuclear threat is gone, it's behind us.

Do you have that confidence?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Well, of course, their nuclear weapons and facilities still exist.

But if you compare the situation with the situation about a year ago, then I think the

changes have been very positive.

About a year ago, we were talking about the sheer number of the missile launches by the

DPRK, and we were afraid that there could be another nuclear testing in North Korea.

But now we are talking about how we can go ahead with the dialogue.

And, as claimed by Winston Churchill, jaw, jaw is better war, war.

JUDY WOODRUFF: So, you trust the North Korean leader, Chairman Kim, to go ahead with denuclearization?

You have confidence he will do that?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Well, we believe so, and we hope so.

And, always, a new history can be made only with optimistic assumptions.

JUDY WOODRUFF: We know -- we saw after the summit President Trump spoke about the suspension

of what he called war games, joint military exercises between the United States and your

country, and South Korea.

He said, those are very expensive.

He said, that's something I have wanted to do away with for a long time.

Is your country, is your government comfortable with that?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Well, both Seoul and Washington are on the same page regarding the important

issues like the joint military exercises.

Having said that, the U.S. was also very clear that, as far as the talks with North Korea

go in good faith, we can afford not to have the kind of the military exercises we used

to have in the past.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Were you surprised?

Was your government -- did your government know ahead of time that President Trump was

going to declare that these war games were stopping?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Once again, I would like to emphasize that our two countries have been

on the same page on the important issue like that.

JUDY WOODRUFF: So, you weren't surprised?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Well, I wasn't surprised.

JUDY WOODRUFF: I want to ask you also about security guarantees from the U.S. going forward.

What else do you see that the U.S. could do for the North to make it more possible for

the North to go ahead with denuclearization?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Well, at the end of the day, I suspect that the normalization of the relationship

between Pyongyang and Washington might be one way of providing Pyongyang with a kind

of security guarantee.

But on the way to the kind of security guarantee which is -- we might be able to provide for

Pyongyang, I think the two Koreas and the U.S. might be able to declare that war is

over on the Korean Peninsula.

That could be kind of the interim step on which we can further build the permanent peace

regime on the Korean Peninsula.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Do you think that should be done before North Korea dismantles its nuclear

program?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Well, those kind of details can be further discussed between South Korea

and the United States, as well as between the United States and North Korea.

JUDY WOODRUFF: You mean -- you're saying it is a detail, but that is a pretty major detail,

isn't it, whether there is peace, whether the war has actually come to an end, the conflict?

LIM SUNG-NAM: Well, I think what I am talking about is a political declaration.

I'm not talking about the -- kind of the legal agreement for creating peace regime.

But, at one point, we might be able to benefit from the kind of the political declaration

regarding the security situation on the Korean Peninsula.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Do you think reunification could come in your lifetime?

LIM SUNG-NAM: I hope and believe so.

Once again, only with the optimistic visions, we might be able to turn a dream into reality.

JUDY WOODRUFF: And one other thing.

What you have learned about Chairman Kim in these most recent round of negotiations that

you didn't already know about him?

What is he -- how is he presenting himself as a leader, and what do you think his priorities

are?

LIM SUNG-NAM: I think he is a leader different from the previous leaders of North Korea.

He was bold enough to come to the meeting with the U.S. president face to face.

And I believe he has made a strategic decision to get out of the self-imposed isolation.

And, plus, in the past, North Korea was talking about the (INAUDIBLE) which is kind of two

-- dual-track policy of pursuing the nuclear and missile capabilities, as well as the economic

prosperity.

But they declared in April this year that their policy focus is now on economic progress.

So, with all those changes, I believe he's coming to the meeting with President Trump

with a determination to go ahead with denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

JUDY WOODRUFF: This potentially historic moment.

LIM SUNG-NAM: Yes, of course.

JUDY WOODRUFF: The foreign minister, Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam, we thank you

very much.

LIM SUNG-NAM: Thank you for having me, Judy.

Thank you.
