August 26 1993 Ibrahim Babangida steps down after eight years as military head

of state and Ernest Shonekan is sworn in as the Head, Interim National Government.

2011 Explosion rocks the United Nations building in Abuja when a car

rammed into the building destroying three floors out of the building's seven.

Islamist group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing

which killed 23 and left 73 others injured. 1995 Human Rights lawyer Gani

Fawehinmi is arrested on arrival at Port Harcourt to address a rally organized by

his party the National Conscience Party by security agents and flown back to

Lagos in the same plane in which he arrived. He was told by the leader of the

team that they had orders not to allow him in enter Port Harcourt. Still on Gani

Fawehinmi in 1994, his chambers was invaded by 6 men wearing military uniforms who

shot at the building. 2 security guards were severely wounded from gunshot

wounds. A CNN reporter Bob Cohen filming the incident was deported from Nigeria.

2005 The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and the Ministry of

Petroleum Resources organize a bid round for the allocation of oil and gas

acreages. Conoil Petroleum owned by businessman Mike Adenuga became the first

indigenous company to be awarded a deep offshore block when it offered to pay

$100 million to secure the block. 2 other indigenous companies

emerged as oil block owners which are Oando PLC and Sahara Energy.

1991 9 new states are created by the

Ibrahim Babangida administration to make the total number of states 30. They are

Kebbi, Kogi Delta, Edo, Enugu, Osun, Jigawa, Taraba and Anambra

States. 1944 The National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons, a

political party is formally inaugurated with Herbert Macauley as its President and

Nnamdi Azikiwe as General-Secretary.

1957 Alban Uzoma Nwapa more known by his stage name Dr. Alban is born in Oguta,
