Three style lessons inspired by fashion icon Diana Vreeland | The New Daily - Duration: 8:05.

The late Diana Vreeland is one of fashion's most powerful icons and her grandson, Alexander, is intent on keeping her spirit alive through a collection of bespoke fragrances he launched four years ago

Vreeland, who died at the age of 85 in 1989, was obsessed with style and transfixed by fragrance

She wrote an advice column for titled , edited the magazine over a 26-year reign until 1962 and then worked for

She also knew how to give a good quote, and endless books have been released celebrating her pearls of wisdom

The flamboyant icon lived in a Manhattan apartment and bonded with her grandson who moved to New York four years before her passing

"I was the only member of the family in New York with her for the last years of her life," Alexander Vreeland, 63, tells

He launched Diana Vreeland Parfums in 2014 to honour his grandmother's legacy. He has since expanded the brand into the Australian, Asian and the Middle East markets where bespoke scents are in huge demand

He will release a new fragrance in October. The businessman saw an opportunity to start a fragrance company after seeing the response to his wife's documentary about his grandmother titled in 2011

"We had a very close, intimate and powerful relationship. I have very clear memories of being with her talking about getting married and having children

I had just been made head of communications for Ralph Lauren at the time. I was experiencing a whole lot of different things from home to work life," he says

"Being able to sit and discuss my life with her definitely helped me channel her via the fragrances

I had a full life with her that gave me the foundations for this collection." Vreeland didn't anticipate a career renaissance in the perfume industry, but the desire to fly the flag for his grandmother reaffirmed his decision

Prior to arriving in New York and working for Ralph Lauren, he went to Canberra to do a leadership course on self-awareness in 1975

He fell in love with Australia, moved to Sydney and remained for nine years."I never wanted to work in fashion or with my family and I have managed to do both," he laughs

"What has become clear to me is that my grandmother is one of the very few heroes that we have in fashion and luxury goods

I was speaking with the editor of last week and he said most editors get forgotten about once they depart

"Diana Vreeland is a name that will live on." Diana on grooming "My grandmother was always a big believer in taking care when it came to grooming

She told me one's toenails needed to be clipped and maintained even in winter, regardless if people saw your feet or not

She used to have her shoes and soles shined and wouldn't think of going out unless everything looked right," Vreeland says

"At the height of women's liberation in the 1960s, she did something that was very controversial

While she believed women had a right to do everything like work and start a family, she also said women needed to maintain a standard at home

"She said you had to get everything right, it was a huge burden and a pressure but she was a believer that women who had high positions could find a way to have children and maintain a relationship with their husband while keeping the home looking fabulous too

Famous quote: "Unshined shoes are the end of civilisation."Diana on fashion "One of the lessons I learned from my grandmother is to never compromise oneself

She was someone who pursued her passions and wouldn't be talked down to," Vreeland says

"She was a believer in luxury and loved beautiful things. She loved fashion to be well made and took good care of her personal possessions

" Famous quote: "Style: All who have it share one thing – originality."Diana on interiors"Diana had a famous apartment in New York and wanted her living room to look like a garden, a garden in hell

The walls were red, the furniture and floors were red. It was an entirely red room

She was very certain about her choices and loved colour," Vreeland says. "Fragrance was also part of her DNA

When she took on her job as a Special Consultant to the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan of Modern Art she made sure no exhibit was showing without a scent of her choice pumping through the airconditioning system

She told me an exhibition is only half told if there is no fragrance in the air."

5 Ethical Fashion Resources to make your life EASIER! - Duration: 9:30.

oh it is hot in here Hello! So, shopping ethically is hard

especially when there are so many brands out there who are trying to greenwash us

into thinking that they're ethical or sustainable. So how do we as consumers

make sure that the money we're spending is actually going towards those brands

who are trying to make a difference and not the brands who are trying to

greenwash us?

so today I'm going to talk to you about some great resources which can help you

make the right shopping decisions. For the sake of making this video simple,

I've divided into two categories the first category are platforms which

rate and review brands and give them a score based on how ethical they are and

the second category are platforms which give an insight into the fashion

industry in general. and I have a little something for you guys that I made myself

that I'm kind of embarassed about but kind of proud about just because I mean I have no

design skills whatsoever so this is quite a feat, quite an achievement, pat on the

back. Hopefully, you can download it and it will be really helpful when

you're out and about and you need something to refer to you on the go but

that's for later. For now, let's just dive right into this video, shall we?

If you haven't heard a fashion revolution, then you've been living

under a rock my friend, okay, no, but you know, fashion revolution is really famous. They

are really famous for having made ethical fashion more mainstream and

a little bit more interesting to us Millennials and some of their campaigns

have gone really viral like their "who made my clothes campaign" and their

"haulternatives" but what I feel like many people don't know is they actually have

transparency index which is basically a report that comes out every year

and basically rates and reviews brands like the most famous well-known, global

brands which is amazing. and they base their report on how transparent those brands

are and what I love about the report is that it really goes into into the depths

of why they're giving that brand this score and it's not just giving you

something and telling you to believe it it's telling you why you should believe it

I wasn't too sure whether to put this in this video because you actually have

to pay for a subscription in order to use their services the only things that

you can access free I think is their best rated brands and the worst rated

brands so you can't really look for a specific brand in the search bar unless

you pay for a subscription but I still thought it was worth checking out because other than

the fact that you have to pay for it it's a brilliant service

"Rank a Brand" reviews more than just fashion they review food and beverage

they review fashion, personal care products and even electronics and what

is amazing about them is that they're free totally free. It's super easy to use

Just search for the brand that you have in mind in the search bar and it will

pop up if they have reviewed that brand. the only little problem I have with this

service is that they say the way they rank the brands is by asking them a

series of questions that the brand has to answer to - but there is no real indication

as to what exactly those questions are so if those questions don't align with

what you think in an ethical brand should be then there is a likelihood

that the result from this platform is slightly biased. so other than that great resource

The shop ethical website is actually my favorite and it's one that

I've never heard people talk about before. what I love about it is the structure

or the layout the website. So when you search for a brand, you are given three

columns. One for the praises that that brand has received, one for the criticism

that that brand has received and one for referencing all the sources

that they've used in order to come to that conclusion.

So you have a full list of what they've referred to in order to rank that brand

that specific grade or score which is fabulous and I love the little icons

that they have for each comment so if it's referring to animal cruelty or if

it's referring to labor it will have a cute little app and so it's kind of

visual at the same time which is amazing. Love it. Can't say enough good things about this website. For me it was a great find.

the good on you app. This one is

probably the best resource that I have to give you because it's an app. So you

can have it on your phone on the go and use it whenever you need to. The

other amazing thing about this app is that when I'm on it I don't feel like

I'm on a ethical platform because there's like discounts, promotions and

there is so much variety of products and styles that feels like I'm shopping from

I don't know. Asos or something okay maybe that's a bit of a far

fetch but it's really really lovely like a great UI and I love the app I

genuinely do. Okay, so moving on to the last two resources those will be a bit

more general

I think The Guardian is one of those few newspapers, at least in the UK, that don't

just go for cheap sensationalism and they actually talk about things that I'm

really interested in like sustainable fashion. They consistently have great

articles on how to be more ethical from tips to political things to speaking

against brands and that's something that I'm really appreciative of. Lucy Siegle is

is actually one of their writers and she was featured in - the

true cost documentary and she is very well known for how

environmentalist she is and and how dedicated she to the cause of the

environment. It's a great resource that I really encourage you to refer to

finally my last one will be the clean clothes

campaign website they have really in-depth and statistical studies and

reports on like really socio-economic topics and it's really

interesting but it's also not for the faint-hearted if you don't like long

reads then this might not be for you. so I thought it would not be very

practical for you to have to refer to this video every single time you want to

remember a platform that I talked about in this video so I made this little

infographic for you guys that you can refer to it whenever you need to

so I will leave a link to my website in the description bar below and if you

just click the link and it will lead you straight on to that page

and you can just click on the download button to download the infographic which is

completely free by the way and it contains the links to my favorite

podcasts, my favorite report, studies, brand rating services so don't forget to

click on that like button for me and that subscribe button please and thank

you very much for your time it's very much so appreciated. see you next video. Byee

you
