Edmonton Green tower block on fire as dark smoke billows into the sky - Duration: 2:13.

</form> A tower block in Edmonton Green in north London caught fire with smoke seen billowing into the sky

 The tower block was in one of three in the area, all 70m and 25-storeys high and the fire broke out on the sixth floor

 Ten fire engines were called to the scene with 50 firefighters tackling the blaze

 One man was taken to safety via a staircase by firefighters.  The alarm was raised at 5

39pm. By 7.10pm the fire was deemed under control.  Witnesses nearby said the smoke was getting worse before fire crews arrived

 Daniel Iqbal tweeted: "The smoke is getting worse in Edmonton Green. Stay safe people

"  Trish Ellis tweeted: "Oh lord. Edmonton Green N9. Praying."  At 6.50pm footage posted on social media appeared to show the fire under control although this has not been confirmed

 The London Fire Brigade received 50 calls about the fire at the residential property, which is just across the road from Edmonton Green bus station

 They said: "Part of a four bedroomed flat on the 6 floor was alight. Crews wearing breathing apparatus led one man to safety through an internal staircase and around 50 residents left the block before the arrival of the Brigade

 "Ten fire engines from stations including Tottenham, Chingford and Southgate fire stations were at the scene

"  The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.  The Edmonton Green tower blocks, completed in 1972, are less than 12 miles from the location of Grenfell Tower in west London

 A total of 72 people were killed in a blaze there on June 14 last year.
