What is minimalist fashion? ǀ Which brands are actually minimalistic? ǀ Justine Leconte - Duration: 6:11.
Hi everyone, it's Justine.
What is minimalist fashion?
"Minimalist" is one of the most over-used words in the fashion industry.
It can mean pretty much anything…
So today, I'd like to discuss what I think it means, what I think it doesn't mean,
where it comes from, and which brands and designers are actually minimalist brands,
in my opinion.
Minimalist fashion, what is that?
When people say "This outfit is minimalistic" or "minimalist", often they're looking
at the first things one sees in an outfit: the overall shape, the colors, and the lines.
For instance, this would typically be called a minimalist outfit.
It is monochromatic.
It seems simple.
You see straight lines.
It looks really clean and tidy.
And that is partly true.
It's a good start for a definition.
But this outfit is also monochromatic, simple, and it has straight lines.
Yet you would probably call it "casual" rather than "minimalistic", am I right?
So what's the difference between those 2?
For me, tailoring is the difference: constructing a garment that has interesting proportions,
that falls right, and that seems simple is in fact extremely difficult, and it's a
matter of tailoring skills.
Tailoring is the difference between a casual garment, and a classy garment.
It doesn't necessarily mean that you have to be wearing a jacket, a suit jacket, with
shoulders and everything, but it means that the clothes that you are wearing fit well,
and the cut is on point.
For me, a look is minimalistic when it's looking like it's simple, when it's clean,
free of additions and embellishments, and when it's well-tailored.
What minimalist fashion is not…
Minimalism doesn't mean that the construction of the garment is in itself basic.
In fact, it just looks simple, but it might be very complicated after all.
And making something complicated seem simple is an art.
Minimalism does not mean "less fabric is more", or that what you wear has to be super
thin, sheer or transparent.
It also doesn't say that the outfit can't be quite structured.
It can have a heavy structure on the inside, to help it keep its shape.
Minimalism also doesn't mean that you can't have textured or patterned fabrics.
Cause why not?
Of course you can.
Minimalism does not mean monochromatic, that you're wearing all black-and-white or that
you're wearing only neutrals.
In fact, the cut and the silhouette in my opinion, are much more important than the
color choices.
When you look at the Céline runway, the garments look simple but the tailoring is in fact impeccable.
The fit is perfect.
The quality of the execution is visible everywhere.
You see that she made clear choices in terms of proportions.
It's overall cohesive, and yet individually very varied, if that makes sense.
Where minimalism comes from: quality over quantity…
Minimalist fashion, for me, is in fact an aesthetic.
It's a mindset that became bigger with the financial crisis at the beginning of this
century.
With decreasing purchasing power, people started to think a lot more about what they wore.
Is it worth my money?
Does it fit me right?
Can I combine that with all the pieces I already own?
And if you are starting to get picky, to prioritize quality over quantity, and to reuse what you
have in your closet, you get very close to what you might know as the concept of a capsule
wardrobe.
But I don't think that having a minimalist fashion aesthetic always means that you have
to own less and less clothes.
I think a capsule wardrobe is rather a consequence of that mindset, or a tool to help you get
there, and a very useful tool.
I've done several videos, this year and last year, on how to build a capsule wardrobe.
I will link them here in the corner and down below for you.
Which brands and designers are minimalists?
You saw a photo of the Céline runway already, a few minutes ago.
Phoebe Philo, the designer, now ex-designer, of the house is the queen of impeccable, luxurious
fashion that seems so simple and intuitive and organic, but is in fact so very high-end.
The look on the left is from Spring/Summer 2010.
Then Fall/Winter 2011.
And then Spring/Summer 2015.
Especially the one in the middle impresses me.
It's technically just a top and a bottom, no bling-bling, plain colors.
And yet the cut and the proportions are so innovative and special, if you look closer.
It's a unique look.
The next label that comes to my mind is Jil Sander, which shows at Milan Fashion Week
in Italy.
As you see in these examples, everything that is not necessary to the design has been taken
out.
And yet nothing is missing.
The cuts are clean, elegant, definitely not casual.
Do you agree?
Jil Sander is not as famous as let's say, Calvin Klein, but I really like the aesthetic
of the house.
Now looking on the American side, the most minimalistic brand, currently, would probably
be Theory.
They are the champions of shirting.
If you need a high-end, white, crisp shirt that's well-tailored, it's a great brand
to look into.
VOGUE calls pieces like this "unshowy clothes".
They are not loud, but they are extremely well cut, in high quality fabrics that look
and feel luxurious.
And here again, you see that they are not only black & white.
The clothes are easy to combine, comfortable, and special… which is everything I want.
And when I design, I always try to create things that are combinable, comfortable and
special.
In the end, minimalist clothing is well-made, smart, and of good quality, without all the
fuss.
And I think those points are all absolutely essential to get "good design".
What do you think makes "good design"?
Which characteristics are you looking for when you are shopping for clothes?
Thumbs up if this video made you think for a minute.
Thank you very much.
And if you're in the market for a new shirt, by the way, here is a video, and also in the
description below, on how a shirt should fit when it fits right.
You might find it useful.
And I'll see you very soon again in a new video.
Bye!

Meghan Markle sparks £300m fashion boost as women around the world want to dress like the Duchess - Duration: 5:44.
Designers and fashion stores are doffing their hats to Meghan Markle as the duchess sets their phones ringing and their tills kerchinging
Orders pour in each time she sports a new outfit, be it an off-the-shoulder dress, a belted coat, a tilted hat or a simple fascinator
Her fashion choices put the bucks in buckles and the millions into millinery. Most of her outfits are bespoke, by the likes of Givenchy and Carolina Herrera and typically costing £5,000
But others, like the Line The Label coat she wore on the day of her engagement to Prince Harry, are available and fly off the shelves
Meghan likes to promote smaller British and Canadian labels and her influence has been worth an estimated £300million to the industry in those countries alone
Now, after last week's Royal Ascot outing – where she wore a white Givenchy dress complemented by a Philip Treacy hat – all eyes are focused on her next big outing, Wimbledon
She is a keen tennis fan and her pal Serena Williams, 36 – the 23-times grand slam winner – was a guest when Meghan wed Prince Harry last month
So the question is will Meghan, also 36, go in simple straw hat and white blouse, like she did when she graced Centre Court in 2016?
Or will she have something else up her sleeve now that she really is fashion royalty? As designers from the fashion houses of Paris to independent online retailers vie for her attention, high street chains will watch keenly as they try to follow suit
Vogue editor Edward Enninful hails Meghan, former star of US telly drama Suits, as "an astonishing sales force setting the fashion industry alight"
And her Wimbledon outfit could prove the biggest PR coup in a fashion brand's history
Meghan often chooses female designers to champion gender equality. She is a big fan of Canadian designer Erdem and their floral, feminine designs would be perfect for Wimbo
Or Meghan might opt for a custom piece by her wedding dress designer Clare Waight Keller – the first female artistic director at the historic French fashion house Givenchy
As well as her Ascot number, Meghan wore a custom Givenchy capelet dress while in Chester on an engagement with the Queen this month
She could go for something understated by another of her favourite designers – Britain's Stella McCartney, creator of the halter neck gown she wore for her evening wedding do
Stella is going to be selling 46 versions of the dress and they will retail at £3,500
One thing for sure is that Meghan will opt for a hat and sunglasses – a wardrobe staple at Wimbledon
Milliner Philip Treacy has emerged as a favourite designer of Meghan's – with his bespoke hats costing around £2,500
She wore a head-piece from the Irish fashion guru for the Trooping the Colour ceremony a fortnight ago
It complemented a blush pink two-piece outfit by Carolina Herrera.During Meghan's first official outing with Harry in Nottingham, she carried a £550 tote bag by Edinburgh-based Strathberry and wore a £427 black coat by Mackage
They flew off the shelves and sold out in minutes. The coat is so popular it is back on sale – costing £23 more
As the Meghan-effect grew, Strathberry enjoyed bumper sales in the run-up to last Christmas
Meghan wore a £750 white wrap coat to mark her engagement last November. Again, copies sold out within 20 minutes of her appearance on Harry's arm at Kensington Palace
Canadian designer John Muscat, 45, founder of Line The Label, explained: "We had 5,000 requests for the coat
It costs £750 – not something you buy lightly."Requests were flooding in from around the world
"But not every outfit is judged to be a winner.Meghan wore a long-sleeve blue and white patterned cocktail dress from designer Oscar de la Renta at the wedding of Lady Celia McCorquodale a week ago
But some royal rans suggested it was too big. The dress costs £3,992. But her M&S fascinator was just £29.99 – well and truly putting the Sparkle into Marks and Sparks.

ALERTA FASHION: ¡Se adelantan las rebajas! - Duration: 2:45.

Ton-in-Ton-Outfits funktionieren nur als Knast-Ensemble in der TV-Serie "Orange Is The New Black"

Victoria Beckham wears a double denim look at Paris Fashion Week - Duration: 4:34.
Victoria Beckham wears a double denim look at Paris Fashion Week
She recently revealed that her and husband David are learning about Old Master paintings. And looking nothing short of a work of art, Victoria Beckham stepped out at the Dior show at Paris Fashion Week on Friday.
The fashion designer, 44, put on a very chic display as she strutted into the event in a daring double denim look.
She daringly opted for a hard to pull off double denim look, which included a fitted jacket, which was belted around her lithe waist. The star paired her ensemble with a pair of signature oversized shades and a stylish maroon tote bag.
Wearing a tousled chestnut tresses loose, she wore minimal make-up for the evening, simply sporting a nude lip.
The singer-turned-designer has teamed up with Sothebys to temporarily host a selection of 16 portraits at the flagship store of her eponymous label ahead of their July 4 auction, and shes revealed that art has long been a passion for her and David.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, the 44-year-old said: David and I loved collecting contemporary art for quite some time, but Old Masters is really something new for me, and something I dont know an enormous amount about.
Im really enjoying learning about it. Its been quite incredible..
Describing the unprecedented collaboration with upscale auction house Sothebys as a dream come true, the mother-of-four also went on to reveal that she and her 43-year-old husband have now become students of the classic works.
Joining Victoria at the star-studded show was Naomi Campbell, who opted for a more causal look in a navy netted vest top.
She teamed the look with a pair of trousers in the same hue, with featured a floral pattern embellished all over.
Adding to her casual vibe, Naomi added a pair of chunky grey trainers which were a far cry from her usual glamorous attire.
She supported the brand by toting a huge Dior bag over her shoulder, which featured the fashion houses signature print and her name personalised across the front.
Despite appearing on some of the hottest runways across the globe, Naomi appeared to taking a backseat at this one. The star looked radiant as she stepped out at the event, leaving her dark locks to cascade down her back.
Naomi covered her striking features with a pair of huge circular shades, while adding touches of glitz with a green sparkler on her finger.
However Naomis recent return to the catwalk comes after she hinted at retirement in an interview while promoting her Fashion For Relief show in Cannes last month. She said: I don't know if I can walk much longer, it's been 32 years.
The fashion darling went on to discuss passing on the baton to her younger counterparts. She explained: Its an honour to walk.
Id love for it to be carried on by the younger generation and for me to sit in the audience and watch.
Naomi was discovered at the tender age of 15 and went on to become one of the original 80s supermodels alongside catwalk queens Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer and later, fellow Brit Kate Moss.
