North Korea tells United States it WILL give up nukes

NORTH Korea has told the United States it is prepared to give up its nuclear weapons

in a huge breakthrough.

The world was on the brink of nuclear war all last year as North Korean leader Kim Jong-un

repeatedly tested missiles while threatening the US with annihilation.

But in a massive change of heart, the regime has now said for the first time that it is

prepared to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula when Kim meets President

Donald Trump, a US official said tonight.

The US and North Korean officials have held secret contacts recently in which Pyongyang

directly delivered the message of its willingness to hold the summit.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the official said that until now, Washington had

been relying on South Korea's assurance of Kim's intentions.

Denuclearization of the Peninsula would mark a huge triumph for Trump, with him achieving

what numerous Presidents before him have failed to do.

As recently as last November, the two countries have been trading insults and threats, including

Trump warning the hermit state not to "test" him.

He tweeted at the time: "NoKo has interpreted America's past restraint as weakness.

"This would be a fatal miscalculation.

"Do not underestimate us.

AND DO NOT TRY US."

U.S., N. Korea in secret, direct talks ahead of summit: CNN - Duration: 1:54.

U.S. President Donald Trump says he's looking forward to the summit with North Korean leader

Kim Jong-un-- that's expected to happen in late May.

The two sides have reportedly been holding secret, direct talks on the details about

the summit.

Won Jung-hwan reports.

The United States and North Korea have reportedly been holding secret, direct talks ahead of

the proposed summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

According to a report Saturday by CNN, intelligence officials from the two countries are communicating

through back channels to plan for the highly anticipated summit to be held in late May

or even June.

The New York Times first reported last month that the CIA was taking the lead in the preparations.

It said the CIA has spoken several times with the North Koreans and has even met with them

in a third country to decide on the summit's timing.

For the location of the summit, the North Koreans are pushing to hold it in their capital,

Pyongyang,… but the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar, has also been mentioned as a possible venue.

Once a location is agreed,… the date can be finalized and the agenda discussed in greater

detail.

Though intelligence officials are already laying the groundwork,... the North Korean

regime has not yet publicly declared an invitation from Kim Jong-un to President Trump.

But according to a South Korean envoy last month, North Korea has acknowledged Trump's

acceptance and reaffirmed its willingness to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean

Peninsula.

In the meantime, Trump is staying in close touch with South Korea, as well as Japan,

China and Russia.

He's due to meet in two weeks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at his Mar-a-Lago

estate to discuss the North Korea summit.

BREAKING: 3 States On HIGH ALERT After Authorities Make Devastating Announcement - Duration: 4:10.

BREAKING: 3 States On HIGH ALERT After Authorities Make Devastating Announcement

Three states are on high alert after emergency officials in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas have

warned that two types of disasters are likely as spring begins.

Spring is historically the most active time of year for tornadoes plus wildfire threats

brought on by severe drought.

April, May and June are the most active months in the U.S. for tornadoes.

At the same time, the three states on the southern end of Tornado Alley are experiencing

extreme and exceptional drought that could fuel wildfires, Associated Press/Fox News

reports.

Tornado Alley extends from northern Texas and covers much of Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska

and South Dakota, plus slivers of New Mexico and Colorado, according to the National Oceanic

and Atmospheric Administration's Storm Prediction Center.

The past three years, the U.S. has seen an average of more than 600 tornadoes during

April, May and June, according to the center . That is more than half the average of 1,186

tornadoes per year during that time span, although the numbers from the last three months

of 2017 are still considered preliminary.Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas are accustomed to preparing

for multiple emergency situations happening at once and train with various agencies to

account for different possibilities.

"We're typically preparing for worst-case scenarios year-round anyway," state Department

of Emergency Management spokeswoman Keli Cain said, noting that the SPC reports Oklahoma

City has been struck by more tornadoes than any other U.S. city, with more than 100 known

twisters.

"We do have some experience at that.

We plan for all hazards anyway."

Katie Horner, spokeswoman for the Kansas adjutant general's division of emergency management,

said last year the state dealt with a blizzard, an ice storm, fire, flooding and a tornado

warning all in the same week.

"We train not only for one or two events in a day, but three or four events in a day,"

she added.

Chip Orton, the emergency management director for Amarillo, a city of about 200,000 in the

Texas Panhandle, says, "My job is to be worried."

"That's why we come to work every day.

Is it likely?

Probably not.

Could it happen?

Sure," he said.

While tornadoes are the result of thunderstorms, which are created from conditions that include

moisture, the current dry conditions in the area do not preclude twisters, said Storm

Prediction Center meteorologist Patrick Marsh.

He noted that two tornadoes were reported in the Texas Panhandle on March 18, even as

the area was rated in extreme drought.

Some private forecasting services are predicting an increase in tornadoes during the coming

months, based largely on the fact that there was the climate phenomenon La Nina during

the past winter.

They're expecting weather patterns in the coming months to be wetter and warmer than

usual, particularly in the southeastern U.S. and along the Gulf Coast.

"(Those conditions) would be a petri dish for thunderstorms.

You need to add an additional ingredient for tornados.

… You need wind shear.

Wind shear is best described as a change in wind speed and direction," Marsh said, and

is created when cold air and warm air collide at the surface.

The national Storm Prediction Center, however, does not forecast severe weather more than

about a week in advance.

Possible U.S.-China trade war poses political problems for GOP - Duration: 6:16.

>> Sreenivasan: RETURNING NOW TO

POLITICS, THIS WEEKEND THE

TEMPERATURE IN WASHINGTON HEATED

UP ON MANY FRONTS: FROM MORE

TALK OF A TRADE WAR WITH CHINA,

TO INCREASINGLY HARSH WORDS

ABOUT IMMIGRATION THE PRESIDENT

WAS AGAIN ON THE OFFENSIVE.

IS THERE A THEME TO THE

PRESIDENT'S WORDS?

NEWSHOUR WEEKEND SPECIAL

CORRESPONDENT JEFF GREENFIELD IS

HERE WITH SOME PERSPECTIVE.

A THREAT, A THROUGH LINE?

>> YES, I THINK YOU PARTICULARLY

SEE WHEN IT YOU WATCH THE

CHANGES IN THE PERSONNEL AROUND

THE WHITE HOUSE.

ONE THING TRUMP HAS BEEN TOTALLY

CONSISTENT ABOUT FOR DECADES IS

WE'RE BEING RIPPED OFF BY

FOREIGNERS, THEY ARE EATING OUR

LUNCH IN EVERY TRADE DEAL AND

THEY ARE SENDING MARAUDING

BANDS OF IMMIGRANTS ACROSS OUR

BORDERS TO DO TERRIBLE THINGS.

NOW THAT IS POLICY.

SO YOU HAVE THE IDEA OF A TRADE

WAR, WHICH HE SAYS HE CAN WIN

EASILY COUPLED WITH THE

EXTREMELY HARSH RHETORIC ABOUT

IMMIGRANTS AND NOW THEY ARE

VOTING ILLEGALLY ALL OVER

CALIFORNIA AND I THINK THE

THREAT IS WHEN YOU LOOK AT WHO

NOW IS SURROUNDING THE

PRESIDENT, GARY COHN, WHO WAS A

FREE TRADER IS GONE AS A KEY

ECONOMIC ADVISOR, REPLACED BY

LARRY KUDLOW WHO THINKS TARIFFS

ARE TERRIFIC, THE SO-CALLED

INTERNATIONALISTS LIKE

McMASTER, THE NATIONAL

SECURITY ADVISOR, REX TILLERSON

AS SECRETARY OF STATE, THEY ARE

GONE, REPLACED BY JOHN BOLTON

AND PROBABLY MIKE POMPEO, MUCH

MORE NATIONALISTIC IN THEIR

APPROACH, SO THE IDEA THAT WE

HEARD A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO THAT

WELL THE GROWNUPS WILL RESTRAIN

TRUMP AND PUT HIM ON A MORE

CONVENTIONAL COURSE, NO THE

PEOPLE AROUND HIM NOW, IN FACT,

ARE REINFORCING THOSE VERY CORE

INSTINCTS OF THE PRESIDENT.

>> Sreenivasan: WHAT ARE THE

POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES OF THIS

FOR HOUSE AND SENATE CANDIDATES

UP FOR REELECTION IN JUST A FEW

MONTHS?

>> ON THE ISSUE OF TRADE, THIS

IS REALLY GOING TO CAUSE AND HAS

CAUSED AN ENORMOUS PROBLEM WITH

THE REPUBLICANS, BECAUSE IN THE

FARM STATES, AND THERE

STILL ARE STATES WHERE FARMING

IS IMPORTANT, WHERE ARE A LOT

OF VULNERABLE DEMOCRATIC

SENATORS ARE UP FOR REELECTION,

THE IDEA OF A TRADE WAR, IF IT

HAPPENS, IS GOING TO CLOBBER

THE AGRICULTURAL ECONOMY AND

YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT STATES

LIKE MONTANA, MISSOURI, NORTH

DAKOTA, MANY OTHERS, THE PROBLEM

FOR THE REPUBLICANS IS, BROADLY

SPEAKING, THE PRESIDENT IS SO

POPULAR AMONG REPUBLICANS THAT

THEY ARE CAUGHT, THEY CAN'T

ATTACK HIM, HE IS THE LEADER OF

OUR PARTY, BUT THEY DON'T WANT

TO SEE A TRADE POLICY LIKE HE IS

ENUNCIATING BECOME REALITY.

THE OTHER THING TO REMEMBER

ABOUT THIS IS, ONE OF TRUMP'S

NOTIONS ABOUT HIMSELF IS HE'S

A MASTER NEGOTIATOR, AND THE ART

OF THE DEAL, TO QUOTE ONE OF HIS

BOOKS, SUGGEST YOU BEGIN WITH

KIND OF A MAXIMAL LIST OPENING

BARGAINING STANCE, IF THAT WERE

TO WORK, IF HIS THREATS RESULTED

IN A DEAL WITH CHINA WHERE THEY

CURB SOME OF THEIR CLEARLY

UNFAIR PRACTICES, THAT IS GOING

TO BE A WIN, BUT THE QUESTION

IS, WHETHER CHINA IS AMENABLE TO

THAT KIND OF NEGOTIATION, THAT

IS VERY MUCH UP IN THE AIR AND

COULD BE A HUGE POLITICAL

PROBLEM FOR THE REPUBLICANS IN

THE FALL.

>> Sreenivasan: SO IN THE

TOPIC OF IMMIGRATION, WOULD THAT

NOW, WOULD HIS ACTIONS AGAIN BE

CONSISTENT WITH THIS SORT OF

THESIS THAT YOU CAN READ ALOUD

IN HIS BOOKS?

>> I THINK IT IS MORE PRIMAL

THAN THAT.

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT HE HAS

TALKED ABOUT FROM THE TIME WHEN

HE WAS A FEATURE OF NEW YORK

TABLOIDS, AND I THINK ONE OF

THE THINGS THAT WE SAW THIS

WEEK IS THE OTHER THING ABOUT

DONALD TRUMP IS HE IS A SHOWMAN,

RIGHT, HE PLAYS TO THE BASE, SO

HE GOES TO AN EVENT THAT IS

SUPPOSED TO CELEBRATE THE TAX

CUTS, AND WHAT DOES HE DO?

HE LITERALLY THROWS AWAY THE

PREPARED SPEECH, THIS IS

BORING--

>> THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A

LITTLE BORING.

A LITTLE BORING.

>> AND GOES OFF ON ONE OF HIS

HARSHEST RANTS YET ABOUT

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, TO ME IT IS

LIKE HE KNOWS WHAT GETS THE

CROWD GOING, YOU KNOW, WHAT ARE

WE GOING TO DO?

BUILD A WALL.

WHO IS GOING TO PAY FOR IT?

MEXICO.

AND WHEN TRUMP STANDS UP IN

FRONT OF A CROWD IT IS KIND

OF LIKE A LED ZEPPELIN REUNION,

YOU KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO HEAR

"STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN" AND YOU ARE

GOING TO HEAR HIM BASH

IMMIGRANTS.

>> Sreenivasan: IS THERE-- WHILE

WE END UP SPENDING ATTENTION ON

THIS, YOU POINT OUT VERY

IMPORTANT STORIES THAT ARE

UNDERCOVERED.

>> I ALWAYS KIND OF LIKE TO

REMIND PEOPLE THERE IS STUFF

GOING ON BEHIND THE HEADLINES.

THIS PAST WEEK, JUDGE STEPHEN

REINHARDT DIED, HE IS A NINTH

CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS OUT

WEST, PROBABLY THE MOST LIBERAL

FEDERAL JUDGE IN THE ENTIRE

COUNTRY, AND THAT COURT OF

APPEALS HAS BEEN THE BANE OF

CONSERVATIVES FOR YEARS.

THIS IS FUNDAMENTALLY DOMINATED

BY LIBERALS.

SO THERE ARE NOW EIGHT VACANCIES

ON THAT COURT, PART OF 100

FEDERAL VACANCIES HE AND SENATE

MAJORITY LEADER MITCH McCONNELL

ARE DETERMINED TO FILL AS

QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.

SO MUCH SO THAT McCONNELL IS

ABOUT TO 86 A LONGSTANDING

TRADITION IN THE SENATE THAT A

HOME STATE SENATOR CAN BLOCK A

FEDERAL JUDGE FROM HIS OR HER

STATE.

>> Sreenivasan: A BLUE SLIP.

>> A BLUE SLIP, EVEN IF IT IS

FROM THE OTHER PARTY.

NOW, YOU LOOK AT WHAT IS COMING

OF THOSE 100 FEDERAL VACANCIES,

AND UNLESS THE DEMOCRATS TAKE

THE SENATE IN THE FALL, THEY ARE

GOING TO HAVE A FUNDAMENTAL

RESHAPING OF THE FEDERAL BENCH,

AND MEANWHILE, IF ONE OF THE

CENTRIST OR LIBERAL SUPREME

COURT JUSTICES WERE TO LEAVE,

RUTH BADER GINSBURG, ANTHONY

KENNEDY, TRUMP IS GOING TO BE

ABLE TO RESHAPE THAT COURT IN A

WAY THAT WILL BE BY FAR THE

MOST CONSEQUENTIAL POLITICAL

ACTION HE WILL HAVE TAKEN IN

HIS FIRST TERM.

>> Sreenivasan: THE PRESIDENT

HAS ALSO BEEN ON THE DEFENSIVE

ABOUT SCOTT PRUITT AND THE

CHALLENGES THAT HE'S FACING AT

THE E.P.A., THIS WEEKEND HE CAME

OUT WITH A TWEET AND I'M

JUST GOING TO READ IT

RATHER QUICKLY, "WHILE SECURITY

SPENDING WAS SOMEWHAT MORE THAN

HIS PREDECESSOR, SCOTT PRUITT

HAS RECEIVED DEATH THREATS

BECAUSE OF HIS BOLD ACTIONS AT

E.P.A.

RECORD CLEAN AIR AND WATER,

WHILE SAVING U.S.A. BILLIONS OF

DOLLARS.

RENT WAS ABOUT MARKET RATE,

TRAVEL EXPENSES OKAY, SCOTT IS

DOING A GREAT JOB."

IN THE LENGTH OF ONE TWEET,

THERE IS AT LEAST A HALF-DOZEN

INACCURACIES THERE, BUT DOES IT

EVEN MATTER?

>> THE CONDUCT THAT SCOTT

PRUITT IS UNDER FIRE FOR IS

EXACTLY THE KIND OF CONDUCT THAT

CONSERVATIVES SAY THAT'S WHAT

BIG GOVERNMENT SWAMPY

BUREAUCRATS DO, ADDING

ON, TRIPLING THE SECURITY STAFF

AND WANTING A BULLET PROOF DESK

AND ASKING THE SECURITY DETAIL

TO RUN SIRENS SO YOU CAN GET TO

A RESTAURANT ON TIME AND MOVING

THAT SECURITY GUY OUT WHEN HE

WON'T DO IT.

WHEN SOMEBODY IS ON YOUR SIDE,

THE CONDUCT LOOKS MUCH MORE

DEFENSIBLE THAN IF THAT GUY

WERE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE

POLITICAL DIVIDE AND THAT IS

TRUE, BY THE WAY, ACROSS THE

BOARD.

>> Sreenivasan: ALL RIGHT, JEFF

GREENFIELD, THANKS SO MUCH.

>> OKAY.

Syria conflict: Missile strike hits Syrian airfield, state media report - Duration: 2:36.

Now to Syria,... where local media reports this morning said missiles struck a military

airbase controlled by the Assad government.

It's not clear who launched the attack, but the United States says it did not.

Lee Jeong-yeon has the latest.

Syria's state media reported on Monday morning that loud explosions were heard at the T4

airbase in the city of Homs.

It said several people were dead or wounded and that 8 missiles were shot down.

The U.S. has denied its involvement,... with some Syrian officials believing Israel could

actually be behind the attack.

This comes not long after U.S. President Donald Trump condemned an alleged chemical attack

in the rebel-held territory of Douma.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, President Trump labeled Assad an "animal," adding there

would be a "big price to pay" for resorting to outlawed weapons of mass destruction.

According to the White House, Trump had a phone call with French President Emmanuel

Macron on Sunday, and the two leaders agreed to coordinate a "strong, joint response" to

the alleged chemical attacks.

About a year ago, U.S. President Trump ordered dozens of cruise missiles to be fired at a

Syrian air base after declaring the Syrian President had used a banned gas on civilians.

In regards to the latest incident, a senior White House official said President Trump

"wouldn't take anything off the table" when asked if another U.S. missile strike was possible.

Aid groups claim at least 48 people were killed Saturday in the town of Douma by what they

described as poison gas.

Douma is the last rebel bastion in the Eastern Ghouta region, which has mostly been overtaken

by Syrian forces.

Trump's hardline stance against Assad is nothing new, but what may be a surprise to many is

his rare personal criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin for supporting the Damascus

government Both the Syrian and Russian governments have

denied launching any chemical attack, calling the reports fake.

Iran, another ally of Damascus, also defended the Syrian regime.

Russia's foreign ministry said the reports had been fabricated to create a pretext for

a possible military intervention in Syria.

Moscow's defense of Damascus comes amid widespread accusations from the West that the Kremlin

was behind a nerve agent attack in England.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council will meet twice on Monday to debate the suspected attack

....after nine of its 15 members called for an emergency meeting.

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox Issues Stark Warning To U.S. Farmers About Trump

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox has warned American farmers that they will be the ones to suffer if a trade war breaks out between the U.S.

On Friday's "Morning Joe," Fox explained how U.S.

agriculture would be hurt if President Donald Trump follows through on his repeated threats to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"Watch out," said Fox, addressing the camera directly.

"Mexico buys from you every year over $40 billion worth of corn, and now we went down south to buy that corn from Argentina, from Brazil." "You better speak up, because this guy is taking you to nowhere," Fox added.

"And you consumers, this trade war, you're going to pay the price for it.

US jet skids off snowy South Dakota runway

No one was hurt when a US passenger jet skidded off a snowy runway in South Dakota.

Allegiant Air spokeswoman Krysta Levy says Flight 456 carrying 155 passengers and six crew members from Las Vegas touched down at Sioux Falls Regional Airport just before noon Sunday (Monday, NZT) when heavy snow and crosswinds caused the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 to slide 20 feet (6 meters) off the runway.

Levy says passengers walked down the planes rear stairs and were taken by buses to the terminal.

She says no one was injured.

Maintenance workers are inspecting the jetliner.

Levy says the plane came to rest with its front wheels in a patch of grass, and remained upright and level.

She says the return flight to Las Vegas was cancelled because of deteriorating weather in Sioux Falls.
