build a boat and you sail but you fight but i guess it might have changed or am

I thinking of Tiffany when I was a pirate I guess I have to build my boat

here and then I set sail and try to go as far as I can in my boat so let's see

if we could be the best part

Since her dad's cancer diagnosis, "he is looking to her to take care of him," but she barely knows him.

"Even though you didn't grow up with your dad, that's still your dad," Sean explains before suggesting that she fly her father out to Atlanta to "build a relationship." Karlie wants to "change the way she's living to care for an elder," and is also appreciative to finally have a man who wholly cares about her.

How to Build a Better Relationship with your Listener 052 Just The Tip Podcast - Duration: 4:58.

Hey Podcaster, I'm Tim Wolberg your podcast performance coach with another

actionable tip so you can sound like a pro and gain more podcast fans. Today's

tip is build a relationship with your listener. Have you ever heard of Don Imus?

He recently retired as one of the most successful US broadcasters in radio

history. Love him or hate him and I have a good reason why you might hate him. He

said a really stupid thing a number of years ago on the air that got him into a

whole lot of trouble but he's since apologized for his remarks, but that's

not why I'm bringing him up. You don't become a massive success on

the radio without doing something special and he did for many years.

His sign-off was featured in a story on CBS's Sunday morning recently and he was

asked about what he was going to miss the most. "I always had in my head that I was

talking to one person. I felt when I walked in there and sit down turn the

mic on that I was talking to you. Yeah I'm gonna miss that." Don Imus went on to

talk about this one-on-one relationship with his audience. He said he spoke to

one person at a time. Now this reminds me instantly of my episode number 29 why I

only talked to one podcast listener and this is a technique that we use in radio.

It's not a parlor trick. It's not manipulation. It's honesty. It's real and

he gets really emotional in this story about it too.

Understand he's done this for 50 years. And this is not just a one-way street.

His fans are really gonna miss him too.

This is not just for radio. I believe it's crucial to your success as a

podcaster when you're trying to grow and ultimately convert an audience. 99% of

the time you're talking to your listener when they're by themselves. They could be

driving walking or sitting in a hammock but they're not by themselves, they're

with you like you're with me right now. It's just you and me. So from me to you

let me break it to you this way. As a podcaster you may have millions of

downloads but you only have one listener. Just talk to that one person. Share

things with them. Tell them your secrets. They're not gonna tell anybody. It's just

between the two of you. Ask them questions and then listen. If you want to

build trust with your listener and grow that relationship talk to them like

they're right in front of you. Here's a tool. Post a picture of your avatar or

target listener. put it right beside your mic right in front of your screen. It

could be a picture of your best friend - or maybe a stuffed animal if you need

something in a pinch. I challenge you to try this just talk to that one person in

front of you. You may start to hear some changes in the language that you use. You

might pause a little more - in episode 29 I talked about some of the language

you could and should be using to help you do this. And it's not just about

connecting during your podcast it's off the air - it's answering emails and

connecting on social media. I know you want more than one listener. You want

millions but you can't talk to them like a group of millions. Why would you want

to do that. If you're using your podcasts for your business the point here is to

build a relationship. Relationships are worth everything in business you know

this from being in business. When people are in a relationship and feel that they

know you they're more likely and more willing to hire you or buy from you.

Wouldn't you rather buy from someone who you know rather than from someone who

treats you like just one of thousands. I know you. Of course you would.

I'm the same way. So would I. So treat each listener like a friend and they'll

be a listener for life and I hope that's just the tip you need.
