Sofia Game Jam is part of the global event - Global Game Jam
Here, we gather people from the gaming industry
and those who want to become part of it
to create games for 48 hours
I lived in Copenhagen five years ago
along with Rosi
with whom I started
Global Game Jam in Sofia
She was one of the participants in
the local Game Jam
and she invited me to watch the games on Sunday
Me and Rosi were like:
"Why don't we have this in Bulgaria?"
And that's how it started, step by step
Five years later we're still here
Every event is better and more awesome than the previous one
So, I'm Fabien Flori
The new director of the French Institute in
Bulgaria, Sofia
I try do discover
your culture and
to develop cultural activity of our institute
We wanted to give voice to the digital culture
in Bulgaria, especially within our institute
It's an exceptional event because
for more than 48 hours
more than 100 participants in Sofia
are going to
to play
to make games, to change
to show the modernity of games
of games all over the world
and they will be part of a huge event
all over the world
with more than 35 000 gamers
in 700 cities
Here, people make new friends
with developers not only from Bulgaria but from different other countries
We started a trend
to invite people
from outside Bulgaria
to invite people from France
to invite people from Poland
and I hope to invite developers from a wider range of countries
I'm Adrien Bacchi, I'm 36
Born in Paris, I have a son
I live in Bulgaria for 10 years, I'm married
I've managed to create two videogame companies
Trixir which is one of them
We're doing business games
So, games for corporations
It's an event that I've been following seriously for the past years
and I strongly believe in the fact that
this type of "jam" is the
is seeding the talents of tomorrow and of today
My name is Gil
I came from Portugal three years ago
and began to work at Ubisoft as a gameplay programmer.
I've already participated in several game jams
which is why I think this is fantastic and that more people should do it
because it's an easy way to be introduced to game making
if you've never done it before
because if you fail, there are no risks.
The projects created here
are great but they're not finished by the teams
for one reason or another
That's how an idea was born:
To give a special reward on behalf of our studio
Something which we call "a mentorship program"
With it we aim to help one of the teams
complete its game
and realize its potential
I'm from France, Avignon
I heard about the Sofia Game Jam in December, 2017
when I met the Insitut Français during a conference here in Plovdiv
and thus they proposed me to come here and give an half an hour speech
to talk about Gamification as it is done in our company
My name is Jan Buczny
and I arrived from Warsaw
I am a concept artist
and I work at 11 Bit Studios
in the R&D team
Last year, my colleagues from 11 Bit Studios participated
in this event
This year it's us who come for the jam
because as the R&D team we work in a similar fashion
I'm Ines Di Loreto
from University of Technology of France
I really believe that game jams
are beautiful environments in which you can learn a lot
not only from a technological point of view
that is you learn a lot about fusing, software
and how to create games
but are a beautiful moment which you can come together
and bring people with different perspectives
to work together, to create
Currently, I work as an Editor-In-Chief in HiComm
Over the years I've worked
in newspapers, magazines and websites
and in different kinds of medias
In the last five years I'm the host of Sofia Game Jam
Which is like
the closest experience I can get
to fulfill my childhood dream of creating videogames
In my opinion
videogames are a very interesting narrative medium
thanks to which some very heavy topics
can be developed in a way that
it can be easily understood by younger people,
children and of course, more mature audiences
Sofia Game Jam is a pretty cool place
as well for my 5-year-old daughter
who is super excited about it
She loves my t-shirt, she hugs me
Hello, we're Angel and Petar and we're here today to create music
The most interesting offer I got today
came from a guy
who came to me
and said he'll make a platformer game which is in the same time
a third-person-3D-something
whose first half is steampunk-oriented
but it's a sad steampunk world
No! There's a sad medieval world
and a happy steampunk world
The medieval one should be very sad because
because the peasants are hungry and they have nothing to eat
There's no bread
They fight each other
The situation is not looking good
And all is going to hell
The people are barely surviving
There's no water, nothing
I mean, nature looks fine but the people are barely surviving
This transitions into another one
which is a steampunk world
...which is a happy place
We'll create a cool transition
where the whole world turns
...and then you see the cyberpunk world
Not the cyberpunk world, I meant the steampunk one
It's steampunk.
It's dark ages for humankind
We'll fix the typos afterwards
And we're working on "Rave Wave"
which is a game
about infecting
a gray and boring city
with music and rhythm
We need to send
to transmit
a message from Earth
to the Opportunity rover which is on Mars
But there are
different obstacles which should be overcome
through a system of satellites
which translate the message to the rover
We follow
the footsteps
of an ancient explorer
..but he's not ancient
The game we're developing is going to be about
this van which is moving around the city
It's broadcasting propaganda
which encourages people to revolt
because this city is oppressed by a regime
Your goal is
to convert as many people as you can
to go out on the streets and
to face the oppressive government
People at the Game Jam are extremely cooperative
and every once in a while we manage to
get in touch with the other groups
and they helps us out a bit and give us a few hints...
In a way it's the essence of the Game Jam
'I'm jammed!' Ugh. 'Unjam!'
And then we switch.
The backstory we discussed has nothing to do with these characters
Really?!
Yes.
I thought that
the grandfather of this Kircho character
whom I named that way
found some artefacts
Didn't we talk about this?
No, we didn't talk about this at all
Yeah, right. We talked about this right there
No, I haven't said anything like that...
We created... the level design
We created the buildings, we created the... hero
I came up with the idea for the game
We all participated in the process
We're making this
70s-80s based
Soviet-inspired
detective game
where you're someone like
McNulty from The Wire
And his goal is to stop a
shady, dirty deal which is happening
at some place where
there are some very dangerous Russian thugs
The idea behind the game mechanics is
because the theme this year is called "Transmission"
you're in a van
The action takes place in the 80s
and all you have is a radio
You're transmitting information to the person who's undercover
So, you're drinking coffee, you're smoking and you're telling this guy
to walk by certain people
and to eavesdrop and talk to them
The only thing you can interact with is
the audio from his sound recording device
When he's around people
the audio is increasing and he starts to hear
some random speech like
"Let's go over here, come on. Let's drink some vodka! Uh, ugh."
I'm a regular participant in Sofia Game Jam, for the fifth year
It's always in the end of January
For me this is New Year's Eve
Generally speaking, for me the end of the year is Sofia Game Jam
I'm very serious, no joke about it
Personally speaking, what I get from it is
a lot of contacts with people from
the business industry
who have helped me or I've helped them
in all kinds of different side-projects
This is the value of the event
If every year there are these 100 people who are
picking up the creative vibes here
and who're capturing the idea of "Wow! Look at the awesome things we can create!"
and they're transmitting it outside the Sofia Game Jam
and they're extending the life of the event
For me this is the most important thing, the most precious
That's why I do it
GAME JAM! GAME JAM! GAME JAM!
