Potential employers will take into account job location, your age and
experience level, what school you went to, and your portfolio. If you graduated from
a top fashion school and have an amazing portfolio don't expect it to get you a
design director level position. Even if your interviewer is impressed you'll
most likely be put in an entry-level position. I once interviewed for a few
fashion design positions. I worked really hard for months on my portfolio
beforehand. Everyone who interviewed me was super impressed with my portfolio
and it got me quite a few job offers. The offers were low positions with low pay
and one interviewer straight-up told me "You know, you have an amazing portfolio,
but because of your age you have to start as an assistant designer." What's
the point of working so hard on your portfolio and going to a good fashion
school if you're going to start out in the same position as someone who has a
mediocre portfolio and went to a mediocre fashion school? These criteria
are not to decide your job position or your salary. These criteria are listed in
order for the interviewer to identify the top candidates. Having better
criteria than your competition will help you get that job offer.
Generally speaking starting salaries for fashion designers in entry-level
positions as fresh graduates here in New York City tends to be about 35 to 45
thousand dollars annually. Honestly, this can vary a lot though and
don't be surprised if they try to lowball you they will take advantage
assuming that you as a young person. You have no negotiation
skills and that you'll just be happy to have your first job. Many companies now
start new employees either as interns or as freelancers so they can put off
making that commitment of hiring you full time. If they like you after their
trial period which is usually ends up being about three months then they might
hire you full time. The toughest part is getting that first full time job
as you gain experience your degree in your schooling will matter less and your
reputation your portfolio and your work experience will matter more. And as you
start working in the fashion industry you will form a reputation as it's a bit
of a small world in the industry. So be nice. Don't burn
bridges as karma will come back around. Thanks for watching and give this video
