Hey guys!
Hey Jasminators!
*laughing*
Ewww
Hey guys! It's Jasmine. Welcome back to my channel.
I'm actually in the basement of my house where I'm going to be filming the first
ever episode of a new series I'm doing called Jasminterviews!
I'm not that creative, so that was the best I could do. I'm sorry, if you hate it then there are
other YouTubers out there that you can watch.
I wanted to kick off this series with a special guest.
She and I actually went to the same high school
and she is an extremely successful blogger and Instagrammer based in Toronto.
Let's kick off this first episode of Jasminterviews with Allysha Yung.
Here is Allysha!
Hi!
So, Allysha and I went to the same high school as I mentioned to you.
We were both dancers -
Jasmine was a very very great dance major.
*laughs*
I didn't pay her to do this.
She's just doing this out of the kindness of her heart.
Allysha was great too, like you were one of the -
I was mediocre.
That's not true...
They hated me.
Yeah, the teachers...
Let's not get into that, but um...
Before we get into like talking about, you know,
how you've become so successful in what you do,
why don't we tell you about what we're going to do while we do that?
So, today we're gonna
Make gingerbreadddd
...houses.
*laughs*
Ok...wow.
*children cheering*
So we got - I think there's four... four buildings.
We've got sprinkles, and I
don't know what that is... some sort of sugar candy.
We got gummies, we got more candy, and we got our icing. We're good to go.
I'm scared..
Don't be scared Jasmine.
*awww*
Wow, such a supportive friend.
So,
I'm gonna ask you some quick questions because
I'm sure a lot of you guys don't know Allysha,
like this is her first time here. So let's just get to know her a little bit.
Try to answer them as soon as you can, I don't want any
hesitation. You know, just go go go.
Go go go? Okay.
What's your age? 22
What university did you go to?
Uhh... U of T
What did you study? Business
What high school do you go to?
Earl Haig
Oh wait guys.. guys... I frickin broke it.
Oh my god Allysha!!!!
So one house gone!
They made it actually very hard for me to break.
Like you know what I mean?
You should file a complaint... no I should.
I can ice it, don't worry.
Okay. A few more things. What's your favorite clothing brand other than your own?
Ouuu
I don't have just one,
I have a lot.
Okay, list like your top.
Umm no because people are gonna hate on it. Like I don't want to say something
that people will go like, "wow, Zara is like, cruel to like, whatever".
Okay true... okay. That's fair.
So what should I say? Like just -
So it's Zara?
*maniacal laugh*
It's fine, everyone loves Zara.
I mean, it's affordable, um..
*laughs*
Celebrity crush?
I don't know their name, but it's the guy from Crazy
Rich Asians.
Oh yeah, I think he's Henry?
Henry? Golding?
Golding? Yes. Henry Golding
He has a -
He has a girlfriend. He's also very attractive.
He's taken but... hit me up.
*laughs hysterically*
Slide into this girl's DMs.
I'm just kidding.
I respect his girlfriend.
Oh my god.
Which came first? Instagram or your blog?
It was Instagram. I started Instagram in grade 10
and it was like
2012 I think? It wasn't big yet.
It was like... people kind of were hating on it still.
They're just like, "what are you trying to do"? But I stuck with it cuz I just
enjoyed fashion and sharing my style.
How did you know that this
could actually be a business? Like when did you reach that point?
Once I hit 10K
which was in grade 12, brands started reaching out to me for paid and unpaid
sponsorships, but I also wanted to make sure I was working with brands that I
loved and that were still aligned with Allysha Yung.
Show the camera what it
looks like. It looks disgusting.
I'm a makeup guru
*laughs*
Ew
*silly music*
So, Allysha finished her first
house. I'm still making mine. It's actually cute! *awww*
I mean it wasn't that hard, it was just a triangle.
There are only so many sides. Hers was actually very difficult so...I give you props
Thank you.
*silly music*
So blog came after Instagram?
Yup.
And it was to... to kind of, go more in depth
depth about your experiences I guess.
More of like... to share with people how I
edit my Instagram photos, which is something I couldn't share on Instagram.
Sharing more a little bit about my personality with others, so they can kind of get
a sense of like who I am.
Right.
You probably can't tell from her Instagram
but she's like a very outgoing, like... sarcastic... just like goofy
person. It's funny because a lot of my friends that first meet me, their opinion
is I'm not approachable or I'm too put together and I don't look like I'd kind
of be a fun time. Or like I'm a boring person. But then when they meet me
they're like, "wow we didn't expect you to have this personality or be this
outgoing or be sarcastic". But I'm like, "Instagram is a facade". It's just
like you're only putting out what you want. I feel like people don't actually
realize that, and they're like, "wow her life must be great, like she's doing
all this X Y Z". It's just like no, I'm just posting certain things that I
want to share with people.
How did you go from starting to post an Instagram
to then creating your own blog and being like, "I'm gonna create this line"?
I always
kind of knew in the back of my head that I wanted to do... have a clothing line.
In university I was like "I want to do my clothing line", like this is what I also
want to do besides like... I was going into marketing. Wait actually let me step this
back, because when I was applying to universities I kind of wanted to go to
Ryerson for fashion. Obviously my parents being... Asian, they're just like "no".
"No".
Yeah I see that.
But what they said to me was actually reasonable because they
said, "you can still do fashion on the side, but I think it's... you should go into
business. And you can always do fashion, but you should have a plan B".
This business background allowed me to make smarter decisions when going about
Yung Squared.
That's so good!
I'm very fortunate that my parents
believed in me and so they invested into it. I had to create a
business plan and show my parents, like, "okay, so if I do this X Y and Z
these are the results". I wanted to show them that I was kind of ready for it.
I was in full-time University -
Oh my gosh.
Yeah, I was taking five courses...
Five courses... Um, I worked two jobs at that time. I did for multiple reasons. One,
I worked at a retail store, Sandro, and I just liked it because I always loved
fashion and I always want to stay up-to-date with like what's up. And
then on top of that I worked at TD.
All at the same time? Yeah.
While going to school? Yes.
While I wanted to start my clothing line.
I don't know what you kids
are doing out there, but basically we're all failures compared to her.
Not at all! Everyone's going through their own journey.
How did you actually
go about creating your pieces?
Just sketching out stuff.
It was me sourcing
the fabrics, and then getting this contract seamstress. So we worked
alongside each other. So I was like, "this is my idea" and she would - and then we would
go back and forth.
And then at one point, I mean it was all like a learning
process because at one point, I was like, "okay, well like should I take sewing
lessons"? So I said I started taking sewing lessons, and I was investing a lot of
time in that. And I was like, "this is not the smartest idea". Because if I'm trying
to do it all, and I want to take classes for it, I'm like should I go into -
I wanted to
create a website, so should I go into like web design?
That's a lot of stuff!
And then I realized, "what am I doing"? I can't be
doing at all. So I had to outsource certain things.
I just kind of had to push
myself. There's days where you're like "ouu I want to do this" and you're
pumping yourself up. And you're like "okay, let's do it, we have to
execute it, so what do we got to do". And then there's days where you're just
demotivated, in your bed, and you're like "I'm exhausted I'm drained".
It's rewarding to hear people tell you that they love the quality of your
product, and then you're like, "okay, well all that time wasn't for nothing". You know?
What's your favorite piece from your line?
I really like... I mean I like it all.
Well obviously.
But... the Ashley Slip and
the Juliana Trench does extremely well.
I named it after strong women in my life.
So Juliana is my mother's name, Ashley's my sister's middle name, Cole
shorts are like my sister Nicole, Lillian top is my aunt's name. They all
had a meaning.
That's so nice! Yeah.
Go check out Allysha's blog and
Instagram.
I made all three of my houses, and now I'm just decorating guys.
I'm done too, oh my god.
This is amazing! We actually finished it.
Mine - I don't have a
lot of decorations, but I like that minimal look, so...
*laughs*
On brand.
Wow
I'm
extra AF, so you can see that in the way that I decorated. Yeah...
Thank you so much
Allysha. Thank you for having me Jasmine!
