An attempt to be cool and create an instant meme went very wrong for California aquarium this week

On Tuesday, the Monterey Bay Aquarium shared a photo of their 11-year-old resident sea otter Abby adorably staring up at the camera

Alongside the image of the photogenic water mammal, an employee of the aquarium wrote, "Abby is a thicc girl What an absolute unit She c h o n k Look at the size of this lady OH LAWD SHE COMIN Another Internetism !"  In a separate tweet, the employee added: "#bodypawsitivity"  But it turns out the tweet wasn't taken so "pawsitively" after all, when people began criticizing the aquarium for their insensitive remarks about the otter's weight and, more seriously, as the slang in it is often used to referring to black women's bodies, being racially insensitive

Some criticized the aquarium saying that the tweet was cultural appropriation and was aligning the bodies of black women with the bodies of animals

The Internet backlash prompted the aquarium to issue an apology one day later in a four-message thread

"Hey everyone. It has come to our attention that some of the references in this tweet are problematic and insensitive," they wrote on Wednesday

"We're posting here in the thread so that people who have engaged with this tweet will join us in our learning moment

"  "If our tweet alienated you, please know that we are deeply sorry, and that we offer our sincerest apologies," they continued

"If you follow our feed, we often reference popular memes to talk about the ocean

In this case, the memes used had connotations we were unaware of until now."  "In particular, several terms referenced originated from African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and specifically reference Black women's bodies

Using them in a sea otter meme without that background makes insinuations we never intended

We need to do better," the aquarium added.  "Our mission is to inspire conservation of the ocean, and we're thankful for your support as we try to advance that mission on social media," they finished

"We're also thankful for those of you out there pointing out our blindspots and how we can improve

Thanks everyone."  Although the photo made Abby appear to be overweight (she's actually a healthy 46 lbs

), the aquarium's curator of mammals, Christine DeAngelo, later clarified on the situation

Speaking to the LA Times, DeAngelo said that it was simply taken an extremely unflattering angle, which was unlike her usual put-together appearance

"That's not blubber or anything," she told the paper. "It's just the angle of her hips and the way she's rolled

She's one of our most photogenic animals."  "We said, 'Oh, my gosh, look at her!' She's not a big animal," she added, touching upon the staff's response to the viral photo

DeAngelo also explained that the photo was likely taken after one of Abby's naps — the sea otter is often tired from working as a surrogate mother for orphaned sea otter pups, which she also was herself

Abby, who was taken in and raised at SeaWorld, has gone on to raise five pups, with a sixth one she's expected to care for arriving in January

Jon Hale went on Radiator Springs Racers 10,750 Times - Disney California Adventure Park - Duration: 6:13.

I've loved the Disneyland Resort ever since I was a kid. My first memory of

Disneyland Park itself, was going on the Matterhorn Bobsleds, because that was

probably my first roller coaster that I'd ever been on, and I'm scared to go on

it but once I went on and I wanted to go on it again and again and again.

My parents went to Disneyland the first summer that it opened.

>> [Jon speaking to his Mother] Go ahead mom.

>> JEAN HALE: Well, my husband and I were married in February 1955, so that was our first time

ever to go to Disneyland. It is exciting, we wanted to see it.

I think it's amazing what Jon has done,

and he's so persistent, but that's hard to believe... Oh My.

[Jon Hale] laughs

>> JON HALE: Pretty much I got my knack of keeping tallies and keeping track

because my dad was an accountant. That's one reason why I like numbers.

When I reached 10,000 it was almost a tribute to him. He always said everybody has one

thing they do. I think my things kind of crazy but it's also fun and I keep going

more than 10,000, we'll see what happens.

[Jon Hale] laughs

Where I work, I work Wednesday to Sunday

so I have Monday and Tuesday off so I usually will spend pretty much all the day

Monday and Tuesday at Disneyland Resort.

>> CATALINA: We are Ride Operators here at Radiator Springs Racers.

>> CARLENE: The first time I noticed Jon was when he hit his 300th lap.

We had a couple of Cast Members come out and greet him and we took a picture with

him and held his sign up. It, it was pretty wonderful.

[Music: somber]

>> JON HALE: The reason I like Radiator Springs Racers, it came along in a time where

some things were happening in my life. I was pretty much kept to myself, kind

of an introvert, I used to weigh over 400 pounds.

I don't know, I don't know if it's because I was

feeling lonely or

just feeling, maybe I just gave up. I don't know.

I don't know why it's just eventually the weight just kept piling on,

and my knees were so bad, I kind of got to the point where I just you know

that enough is enough we got to do something about this. So eventually I had

gastric bypass surgery, a year later when after I'd lost 130 pounds I had double

knee replacement surgery. The day of the surgery was probably one of the most

happy days in my life, because I knew this is we're gonna fix me up we're

gonna fix me up good.

Right at the end of my recovery, a certain attraction opened up

that first time I was like, can I bend my knees to get in that back row? And I did,

and I fell in love with Radiator Springs Racers right then. I was like oh this is

the ride, this is the ride for me.

[music: inspirational]

This has really kind of

opened the door for me.

Kind of let me out of the box where I'm not afraid to talk to people any more.

This is all the collection I've gotten since I've started Radiator Springs Racers.

Some of the things I've collected, some of the things the Cast Members have given me.

So this is from the Doctor Strange 10K, Avengers 5K.

Going on this ride so many times walking it kind of got me into doing some

runDisney events. Keeps me healthy. I did a 10K on a Saturday and the Sunday I did

the Star Wars half marathon. Whatever I start I want to finish it.

When I go on Radiator Springs Racers, I usually have my Cars Land hat, so I always turn it

backwards so I don't want the hat to fall off. When I reach 1,300 times, my hat still fell off.

>> CARLENE: I was there that night. At the end the night we do walk the track and we found the hat.

>> JON HALE: When I came back to the ride the next day, the Cast Members

presented the hat to me and they had all autographed the hat.

>> CARLENE: All the Cast Members signed it for Jon. So that was pretty magical.

>> JON HALE: It's touching that they would think of me that way.

They really are my second family at the parks.

>> CATALINA: I ended up getting a friend plus an older brother that I never had.

When he hits his milestones we all so celebrate with him.

Latest one that we did was the 10,000 race and that was pretty fun.

>> JON HALE: They're my family, and they're very special to me

and I love them to death and I didn't have that I, I don't know.

It's, it's pretty much the community thing that really keeps me going now.

Yes, I want to get more times on the ride. But it's pretty much going and seeing friends, Monday and Tuesday.

So today we're going to Radiator Springs Racers for my ten thousand, seven hundred, and fifth time.

[music: uplifting]

>> JON HALE: I feel like Disney California Adventure is also a home. It's my second home.

>> CARLENE: It was his chance to be the person he wanted to be. It's very empowering to be

able to do something you've always wanted to do, and then feel like you

can't, and then get there and follow your dreams.

>> JON HALE: How's it going?

>> FAMILY: Hey Jon!

aaawwwww

[music: inspirational]

>> JON HALE: Disneyland Resort, it really came at the right time when I had the surgeries and

I was able to better communicate with people, and really I wanted to improve myself.

I wanted to be able to enjoy things, I want to be able to enjoy life.

And I was able to accomplish that and that made me enjoy Disney California Adventure

even more, by having a way that I could get around all day long.

I'm Jon Hale and I've been on Radiator Springs Racers ten thousand, seven hundred, and fifty times.

And that makes me one of the many Disney People.
