Phil Mickelson gave himself a two-shot penalty during Sunday's final round of the Greenbrier Classic
The 48-year-old, less than a month after deliberately hitting a moving ball at the US Open, trampled down a piece of grass thereby improving his line of play
Moments later it dawned on Mickelson that what he had done might be a violation of the rules and he was heard saying: 'Is what I just did legal? I would think so
I'll ask somebody.'A further conversation with a course official followed before Mickelson calmly accepted that he had done something wrong and penalised himself two strokes
The incident occurred on the par-four seventh hole, which Mickelson double-bogeyed after factoring in his penalty
Mickelson's cool behaviour was very different to the last time he committed a violation
It took him four days to apologise for his misdemeanour at the US Open.In a text message to a number of American golf writers who he had breezed by without comment at Shinnecock Hills, he eventually said: 'I know this should have come sooner, but it's taken me a few days to calm down
'My anger and frustration got the best of me last weekend. I'm embarrassed and disappointed by my actions
It was clearly not my finest moment and I'm sorry.'
