Alhazred, Harbinger of the Dark Star - David Explains - Duration: 2:15.

This piece is called, "Alhazred, Harbinger of the Dark

Star". I started this piece with a series of quick sketches.

I had an idea in my head of what I wanted to do. I wanted to have Alhazred's

skull, and I knew that he was going to have some type of

crown of bones on top of the skull. After

doing some quick sketches, a lot of times I will sit down to

the paper and already have an exact idea of

what I want to do with the piece. But, there's a lot of elements with this piece

that just kind of happened organically. For instance, the runes

on the forehead and the black tears that you can see

streaming down the sides. Those just happened as I worked on the piece.

I was thinking about Alhazred himself and how he delved into

extremely powerful and extremely dangerous things.

And, in the end it did not work out very well for him.

And, in a way, I think this is some form of punishment for

delving too deeply. This piece has a lot of imagery that ties

directly into Journey to the Tree of Sorrows. It also

directly inspired Heath's story, "Relic of the Mad Poet"

and the story goes into detail about the substance

that is dripping from the eye sockets and the

runes that are inscribed into the skull and ultimately the crown itself.

We took the outline of this piece and used it as the Mark of

the Necronomicon, which is one of the main symbols in Journey to the Tree

of Sorrows. It is often worked into the cover of copies of

the Necronomicon and now, the symbol itself

has its own history and lore that's a special part of Journey to

the Tree of Sorrows. Once again,

as is normal with most of my artwork, this is

pencils and powdered graphite and I used a lot more charcoal

in this one than I do a lot of time to get these really dark

black areas and I am very happy with how it turned out.
