REDDING, Calif. (AP) — An explosive wildfire tore through two small Northern California communities Thursday before reaching the city of Redding, killing a bulldozer operator on the fire lines, burning three firefighters, destroying dozens of homes and forcing thousands to flee

Scott McLean, a CalFire spokesman for the crews battling the blaze, said flames swept through the communities of Shasta and Keswick before jumping the Sacramento River and reaching Redding, a city of about 92,000 people — the largest in the region

The Carr Fire is "taking down everything in its path," he said. "It's just a wall of flames

It's nonstop." Hung T Vu The remains of a home burned by a wildfire in Whiskeytown, Calif

Late Thursday, crews found the body of a bulldozer operator who was hired privately to clear vegetation in the blaze's path, McLean said

The fire burned over the operator and his equipment, making the man the second bulldozer operator killed in a California blaze in less than two weeks

Three firefighters and an unknown number of civilians had burns, but the extent of their injuries wasn't immediately known, McLean said

"It's just chaotic. It's wild," he said. "There's a lot of fire, a lot of structures burning

"  He said many people in Redding didn't seem prepared for the blaze to reach their city

"When it hit, people were really scrambling," he said. "There was not much of a warning

"  Traffic out of the city was backed up, with drives that normally take 20 minutes reaching two and a half hours long as residents fled to safety, he said

Firefighters tried in vain to build containment around the blaze Thursday but flames kept jumping their lines, he said

"It's just a heck of a fight," he said. "They're doing what they can do and they get pushed out in a lot of cases

We're fighting the fight right now."  The 45-square-mile (115-square-kilometer) fire that began Monday tripled in size overnight Thursday amid scorching temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions

Earlier in the day with flames exploding around Whiskeytown Lake, an effort to save boats at a marina by untying them from moorings and pushing them to safety, wasn't swift enough to spare them all

Dozens of charred, twisted and melted boats were among the losses at Oak Bottom Marina

"The boat docks down there — all the way out in the water — 30 to 40 boats caught fire when the fire laid down on top of them last night and burned those up," said fire Chief Mike Hebrard of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection

Marcio Jose Sanchez California sweltered under a heat wave as firefighters battled ferocious fires at both ends of the state

In the historic Gold Rush-era town of Shasta, state parks employees worked through the early morning to rescue artifacts from a museum as the blaze advanced

Wildfires throughout the state have burned through tinder-dry brush and forest, forced thousands to evacuate homes and forced campers to pack up their tents at the height of summer

Gov. Jerry Brown declared states of emergency for the three largest fires, which will authorize the state to rally resources to local governments

The wildfires have dispatched firefighters to all corners of the state amid an oppressive heat wave

A huge forest fire continued to grow outside Yosemite National Park. That blaze killed 36-year-old Braden Varney, a heavy equipment operator for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection whose bulldozer rolled over into a ravine July 14

About 100 homes were still under threat in the San Francisco Bay community of Clayton, although firefighters had stopped the progress of a small fire there after one house burned

ABC 10 The Cranston Fire was believed to have been started by arson.  Hundreds of miles to the south, winds picked up and sent flames rushing downhill on the flanks of Southern California's Mount San Jacinto

Helicopters making water drops and air tankers pouring red flame retardant circled overhead as flames burned both sides of the main road leading to the scenic town of Idyllwild

The blaze erupted Wednesday and quickly turned into a wall of flame that torched timber and dry brush

In a matter of hours, the so-called Cranston Fire grew to 7.5 square miles (19 square kilometers)

About 3,000 residents were under evacuation orders Thursday in Idyllwild and several neighboring communities

The Cranston Fire was the largest of at least five police believe were purposely set by a man whose car was spotted at the starting point of the blaze in Riverside County, officials said

Brandon McGlover, 32, of Temecula was booked on suspicion of five counts of arson, state fire officials said

The heart of Yosemite National Park remained empty the day after campers and hotel guests were evicted so firefighters could try to keep the state's largest fire from entering the park nearly two weeks after it was sparked

The closure was heartbreaking for travelers who mapped out trips months in advance to hike and climb amid the spectacular views of cascading waterfalls and sheer rock faces

Daina Miller of Tucson, Arizona, had wanted to visit Yosemite for years, but instead her family spent a few hours breathing foul-smelling smoke Tuesday before retreating to their RV for the night

The next morning, they left for Los Angeles.  "You go there and expect the fresh air and it was the total opposite of that," she said Thursday

The closure through at least Sunday led to at least 1,000 campground and hotel bookings being canceled, park spokesman Scott Gediman said

Officials emphasized Yosemite wasn't in imminent danger from the Ferguson Fire, which grew to more than 67 square miles (173 square kilometers) in steep timber in the adjacent Sierra National Forest

The fire was just 25 percent contained. Here's a video. pic.twitter.com/cfNgXWTj0S— Jim Schultz (@JimSchultz_RS) July 27, 2018 RELATED

Arson Arrest Made In Fast-Moving Southern California Fire - Duration: 5:41.

A California man has been taken into custody on suspicion of arson, as firefighters have contained just 5 percent of the blaze that started Wednesday in the Idyllwild area in Riverside County

The Cranston fire has destroyed five homes and forced some 3,200 people to evacuate

The fire spread very rapidly, expanding to 4,700 acres in just a few hours.  Nearly 700 personnel are fighting to gain control of the fire

All of Idyllwild, a quaint town surrounded by pine trees in the San Jacinto mountains, is being evacuated

"It came up on us really, really quickly. Within a half hour, the whole town was overwhelmed with flames," Joe Achtner, a 65-year-old carpenter and Idyllwild resident, told the Los Angeles Times

"All of a sudden, it was right there — and it was huge."  "I just pray for the town

We live in a beautiful town," Achtner told the newspaper."The whole town is the trees and the town is the people and it's all jeopardized right now

"  On Wednesday, the same day the blaze started, California fire authorities arrested Brandon McGlover, a 32-year-old man from Temecula

He's been booked into a detention center for "five counts of arson to wildland," and it wasn't immediately clear what his motivation might be

The other wildland fires, according to fire authorities, are "within Southwest Riverside County and Federal areas along State Highway 74 in the San Bernardino National Forest

"  According to The Associated Press, officials say that McGlover's car "was reportedly spotted at the starting point of the blaze

"  The Idyllwild area is also home to several summer camps, and the wire service reports that "several hundred children" were evacuated from them

Some were taken to a shelter set up at a nearby high school.  The weather may complicate firefighting efforts

The area is under an excessive heat warning through Friday evening, and the National Weather Service warns the temperature could reach the 100s

"We're throwing everything we can at it," U.S. Forest Service spokesman Lee Beyer told the Times

That includes covering homes in flame retardant.  Firefighters are also battling other large blazes in the state

The Ferguson Fire in central California, which has grown to more than 43,200 acres, has forced parts of the nearby Yosemite National Park to close until at least Sunday

That includes marquee attractions such as Yosemite Valley, where visitors can see famous rock formations such as Half Dome and El Capitan

The park itself is not in imminent danger – but the areas are being used for fire operations and are also filled with unhealthy amounts of smoke

And in Northern California's Shasta County, the Carr Fire has burned 20,000 acres and is just 10 percent contained

Arson wildfire forces entire California town to evacuate - Duration: 7:17.

A fast-moving wildfire — believed to have been sparked by arson — tore through trees, burned five homes and forced evacuation orders for an entire forest town as California sweltered under a heat wave and battled ferocious fires at both ends of the state

The so-called Cranston Fire, which erupted Wednesday in the San Jacinto Mountains east of Los Angeles, turned into a wall of flame that torched timber and tinder-dry brush

In a matter of hours it grew to 7 1/2 square miles (19 square kilometers). It was threatening an estimated 600 homes, authorities said

The fire was the largest of at least five that police believe were purposely set Wednesday by a man whose car was reportedly spotted at the starting point of the blaze in Riverside County, officials said

Brandon N. McGlover, 32, of Temecula was booked on suspicion of five counts of arson, state fire officials said

It wasn't clear whether he had an attorney. Authorities ordered residents to leave Idyllwild and several neighboring communities, home to about 12,000 people

William Blodgett of Idyllwild said he couldn't get home because of the fire and had to wait along with others at a gas station in nearby Mountain Center — until the fire hopped a highway and began to move in his direction

"We were all peeling out of there as fast as we could," he told KNBC-TV. "It was apocalyptic

" Horses and other animals were taken to shelters as were several hundred children who were evacuated from summer camps

About 200 were at a local high school serving as a shelter, KCAL-TV reported. The fire in the San Bernardino National Forest sent up a cloud 50,000 feet high that was so enormous it created its own weather in the form of lightning, the National Weather Service reported

Throughout the day, helicopters and planes dumped water and fire retardant that turned swathes of land and homes pink

Fire engines also were stationed to protect homes. The fire is one of several across California amid a heat wave that has seen days of triple-digit temperatures

To the north, in the San Francisco Bay Area, at least one home burned in a fast-moving blaze in Clayton, where houses are spread out around windy roads

Yosemite Valley, the scenic heart of the national park, was closed at noon Wednesday during the height of tourist season as smoke cast a pall on the region from a fire in the Sierra Nevada

The closure was heartbreaking for travelers, many of whom mapped out their trips months in advance to hike and climb amid the spectacular views of cascading waterfalls and sheer rock faces

"We had one guest who planned a weeklong trip," said Tom Lambert, who owns a vacation rental property near Yosemite Valley

"It was a father-daughter trip, for her high school graduation . Now it's done. It's sad

" Another guest had to delay plans to climb Half Dome. Officials emphasized that Yosemite wasn't in imminent danger from the fire

Authorities decided on the shutdown to allow crews to perform protective measures such as burning away brush along roadways without having to deal with traffic in the park that welcomes 4 million visitors annually

Yosemite Valley will be closed until at least Sunday, along with a winding, mountainous, 20-mile (32-kilometer) stretch of California's State Route 41 that leads into the area, Gediman said

At least 1,000 campground and hotel bookings were canceled — to say nothing of the impact on day visitors, park workers and small businesses along the highway, Gediman said

The last time the 7.5-mile-long (12-kilometer-long) valley was closed because of fire was 1990, he said

Over nearly two weeks, flames have churned through 60 square miles (155 square kilometers) of timber in steep terrain of the Sierra Nevada just west of the park

The fire was just 25 percent contained. More than 3,300 firefighters are working the fire, aided by 16 helicopters

One firefighter was killed July 14, and six others have been injured. In the state's far north, a 7-square-mile (18-square-kilometer) wildfire has forced the evacuation of French Gulch, a small Shasta County community that dates to the Gold Rush

California teen wakes up couple to ask for Wi-Fi code as he burglarizes their house, police say - Duration: 2:45.

An unnamed California teenager was arrested after he allegedly broke into a house and woke the sleeping couple to ask for their Wi-Fi password

(iStock) A teenager accused of multiple thefts in the Palo Alto area has requested one thing of his victims before allegedly stealing the items: the Wi-Fi password

The unnamed 17-year-old was arrested earlier this week after police said he broke into an older couple's home and woke them up, requesting their Wi-Fi code

The California couple told police they were able to chase the suspect, who had his face covered, out of their house early Sunday morning

Palo Alto police arrested him a short time later for residential burglary, prowling and providing false information to an officer

Residential burglary is a felony; the others are misdemeanors.  The teenager allegedly entered the house by climbing through a window

The unnamed residents, who are in their 60s, reported two kitchen knives missing, but they have not yet been recovered, police said in the news release

Police also said the suspect stole a bike from the yard of a different residence late Saturday night

A woman told officials she saw him standing outside her bedroom window, and he asked her for the Wi-Fi code because he ran out of cellular data

WAFFLE HOUSE ROBBED, CUSTOMER SHOT BY MAN IN 'ANGRY CLOWN MASK,' POLICE SAY  The residents of that house got the suspect to leave, and he fled on a bicycle, police said

An occupant in that house later realized the bike the suspect left with actually belonged to him

The bike has been returned to its owner, and Palo Alto police are asking that the teenager be charged with misdemeanor petty theft in that case

WOMAN ACCUSED OF STEALING $70G WORTH OF JEWELRY AND CASH FROM MAN SHE MET AT A BAR  Because he is under 18, the name and photo of the suspect have not been released

Palo Alto police are asking for anyone with additional information about the incidents to call the 24-hour number at 650-329-2413 or send anonymous tips to paloalto@tipnow
