Recreating a Classic Portrait: OnSet ep.174 - Duration: 7:29.
Hey this is Daniel Norton. I'm here in my
studio in New York City with Maria, and
Maria is a comedian, and she's a fan of
Charlie Chaplin, and studied him a bit, so
we decided we'd do a cool portrait, and
for this I decided I'm just going to
keep it really simple. I looked at some
old shots of Charlie Chaplin, and I said
I'm just going to keep it in that general
style. So we have a nice roll of seamless
paper, and while a lot of the shots I saw
were on white. I thought the, the kind of
brownish paper will be good. If I decide
to keep these in color, I might end up
doing like a very minimally saturated
color, instead of going full black and
white with them, but we probably are
going to do black and white, as well which
is be more classic, but anyways that's
all stuff you can do in post, in the
computer. So let me talk about how I lit
this thing. Really, really simple, I've got
two Profoto B1X's. One's over here
they're basically bouncing into V flats.
What I wanted to create was this, just a
wash of light that would give her room
to move around, and, and not have to be
restricted, and have minimal shadow. So I
have one here, and my other ones on the
other side. They are not evenly powered
though I wanted to create a little bit
of definition. So I decided to create a
little bit more power out of the one on
this side. A little bit less over here to
get some shadow, and I'm using again the
Profoto controller. Here I have my Canon
camera with the 24-70mm, I'm on 35 so first,
I'm going to take a shot with no flash,
as always, to make sure that I get a
black frame, and I'm in Capture One. I can
see that I have no exposure there. I'm at
250 f/8, I want to give myself enough
depth the field, 100 ISO. That's all good,
fire up my flashes, they are TTL,
so... and again, this one over here is a
little bit less power, so I'm going to a
test shot for this because of the angle.
I'm going to use the live-view. Makes my
life easier, so I'm live viewing in. We
have a good pose going here, we're going to
do a test shot. BAM! Nice! Ok, so I've got
my first shot, and as always if I know
I'm going to do something to the images
like in post, they at least want to
roughly do it here, so I can see what I'm
getting as I go. So let's kind of
check to make sure. I mean at f/8 I
should be totally fine! Yep. Nice and
sharp. Detail in my blacks.
Yep, everything looks good there, but I am
going to come over here to my adjustments,
and I'm gonna throw a little style on
here. I think I'm going to go with... in
legacy styles there is this one here,
which is... 'Old look... old look 2'. It looks like
it adds a little bit of a vignette. It
adds a little bit of kind of a gradation
on there. I'm just going to jump into my
settings here, and like you can see in my
black and white settings. I've got all
the different colors, and I'm just going to
tweak it a little bit to my taste. I'm not
going too crazy. Most of the photos that I
found were really, really high, contrast
where you're not going to have so much
detail. But I want to have detail, so I'm
not going to go quite that far in my
interpretation of this, and that looks
pretty good now, because I'm going to
Capture One. Oh the other thing I'm going to
do here, is me with my captures, so I know what
I'm doing, and I will call this one
Chaplin. This will then name all my files
as I go, so that I know which shots are
which, without having to look at them.
Okay, that should be good. My white
balance is set on flash, which again
should be totally fine. Just to be safe
though, even I don't know I shooting black
or white photo, but just to be safe I'm
going to grab my color chart here. If you
don't mind holding that. Just going to make
a shot with this again. I'm not going to deal
with this right this second, but if I need
to go back and get better color. I'll
have it. Thank you!
There we go...
that's the new X right, grayscale card.
All right, here we go, all right so we're
good. Again I'm in live view. Good, good, good
See if you can get a little more lean... that's it..
Good, good, good, good expression,
nice, good, good, good, perfect... we bring the
heels closer together.
That's it, that's it, well.. lean... that's it
that's it, good, yeah, that's going, that's
good. I like that, lean back, nice one, more,
nice, working it a little bit. See me,
maybe do, try do something different...
different with the cane! That's, we
pretty much got the shots. Let's try... ya
that's it, something like a little. Yeah
you go there, you go, that's perfect. I
like that face, good, perfect!
Good, good, good, nice, okay! So uh, oh
perfect, good, good, good, hold on, great ha
ha, good, good, good, good, good
nice, nice, nice one, more like that. I'd
like the way you were holding the cane in
front of you, but just do that, and then
move this way, slightly, perfect!
Feet closer together...
Perfect, there we go, there we go, perfect,
perfect perfect one more, good, like
that, perfect, perfect, one more, and let's go
back to the very first thing again just because...
Perfect, turn the cane slightly this way,
perfect, we're kind of, in order to match
the original shot we had a little
shorter cane, so we're kind of cheating
on these. Ones a little bit, good, good,
good, and I'll just show you guys. Just
cause I got this a million times over. Let
me just show you. I have again this light
over here, it's a little bit less powerful,
I'm going to turn it off, and just show you
what to do if we have a single light cause that
might also be nice. You never can tell.
That's also not terrible...
see we do definitely get a shadow in the
background, but I kind of like that
actually. Let's try a couple like that.
Waddle this way slightly, good, heels, good.
Good, good, good.
Yeah it's nice! Can you flip the cane
the other way, so that you're... yeah... exactly,
perfect, good, nice, one more, do the
thing where you put it over your shoulder. I kind
of like that one. Good, good, good, good,
good, one more, right, there, beautiful. one
more, cool, all right, so these look good.
I'm just going to do one final check to make
sure everything's good. Didn't really
change. Looks really nice, beautiful, hold
on all right,
so hold on, do that again, you're just
kind of leaning this way. Oh yeah,
you always do the best stuff when you're
not looking... anyways, so, yeah, again I had
a plan. We shot it, sometimes remember
that if you're if your subject is kind
of enough of a character, if you will, and
really so in this case, keep your
lighting simple. Sometimes it can just be
about a very simple shot, with the person
there, looking the way they need to
look. We know what the expression.. you
don't have to always go over the top
with all your lighting, you can find
Maria on various social media Maria DeCotis, we
will put the link in the bottom!

The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony (Letra e Tradução) - Classic Movies Tribute - Duration: 5:58.
'Cause it's a bitter sweet symphony, that's life
Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah
No change, I can change, I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mould, I am here in my mould
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mould, no, no, no, no, no
(Have you ever been down?)
Well, I've never prayed, but tonight I'm on my knees, yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singing to me now
No change, I can change, I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mould, I am here in my mould
And I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mould, no, no, no, no, no
(Have you ever been down?)
I can't change it you know, I can't change it
'Cause it's a bitter sweet symphony, that's life
Trying to make ends meet, trying to find some money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah
You know I can change, I can change, I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mould, I am here in my mould
And I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mould, no, no, no, no, no
I can't change my mould, no, no, no, no, no
I can't change my mould, no, no, no, no, no
You've gotta change my mould, no, no, no
(It's just sex and violence, melody and silence)
(Gotta, can't change my violence, melody and silence)
(I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down)
(Have you ever been down?)
(Ever been down)
(Ever been down)
(Ever been down)
(Ever been down)
