Hollyoaks has continued to explore Laurie Shelby's darker side this month, as he's harassed Sienna Blake in the workplace and manipulated the emotions of his wife Sinead

The unsettling storyline is a big new challenge for show newcomer Kyle Pryor, who was previously best known for playing likeable doctor Nate Cooper in Home and Away

Digital Spy caught up with Kyle this week for a chat about Laurie's games and where the story is heading next

I knew that it'd be very challenging and also something that's very relevant at the moment

"My goal, really, is to just raise awareness so that people will seek help if they find themselves in this situation

If some good can come from this story, that's what I'm hoping for."When you first auditioned and then joined the show, did you always know this story was coming up?"Yeah, I knew the nature of the character

There was a fairly loose amount of information at the start, as the nature of these daily shows is that stories are being drafted constantly

"You don't have the complete picture at the very beginning, but it's great having the storyline department there – you can go upstairs to discuss the character and how he's going to develop

"Why does Laurie behave in this way? Is it a power trip?"It's all about power. The backstory that I discussed with the story department was that it's something Laurie experienced in his youth

He saw how his dad was with women in his life, and that is why he is the way he is

It's perpetuated that cycle – he's copied what his dad did and he's gone on to abuse other people himself

" We've already seen Laurie scare off another woman he's abused in his past. Is he confident that he can keep getting away with this? Advertisement - Continue Reading Below "Part of the nature of Laurie is that he almost enjoys the danger element of it as well

But at the same time, he's so confident and arrogant that he does genuinely feel like he can get away with it

In his eyes, there's always a way out of the situation to cover his tracks."We've just seen Laurie kiss Sienna, but he tries to turn it around and accuses her of initiating it

Is he playing mind games?"He is and it's important to remember that Laurie is in a position of power as well

He's the deputy head at Hollyoaks High and he knows that Sienna is the trainee teacher

She's in a subservient position comparatively to him."Laurie knows how much Sienna loves the job and that she doesn't want to lose the position at the school

He's basically making the most of that and showing how far he can push things. Laurie also feels that Sally is more likely to believe him, over somebody that's a trainee

"Can you tell us where the storyline is going?"Obviously the plot thickens. Laurie is weaving a pretty sordid web here

He's going to do more and more things, but that means having more to cover up. "Laurie is trying to juggle two separate lives – his life with Sinead and the family environment, but also the work environment and his interest in Sienna

He's living a pretty big lie, so it's going to become increasingly difficult for him to disguise things as time goes on

Again, it's a power struggle and he enjoys being in control. There's a lot of gaslighting and emotional and psychological manipulation that's occurring here

Anytime Sinead is jealous, he will act aggressively."How are Hollyoaks fans reacting to such a horrible character?"They hate him, from what I can gather so far, and rightly so! For me it's good to know that the character is being portrayed the way he needs to be portrayed

In that regard, it's a good thing. He's not really supposed be liked in any way. It's a stark contrast to my last character – Doctor Nate from Home and Away

"What has Anna Passey been like to work with?"Fantastic – she's very professional

I know that her character has a history of fairly subversive acts! Now she's turned good, so it's nice for me to be playing the villain and for her character to be struggling

Sienna doesn't know how to deal with this very complex situation that she finds herself in

" Sienna has a history of locking people in basements! Do you think Laurie is underestimating her in the long-run?"I wouldn't be surprised! Laurie knows a few things about Sienna, but he doesn't know the entire picture

I think he probably would have picked someone else, if he had the full backstory

He sees Sienna as a bit of a pushover, but at the same time, he does enjoy the challenge

I don't know exactly how it's going to play out, but I think that's an important element

"It's nice to see people rallying towards the good characters in the show and having strong reactions against the villains

People like to see the bad guy get his comeuppance at the end of the day. I'm sure that will be no different for Laurie

MARTIN KEOWN: Referees risk leaving fans in the dark by relying on VAR - Duration: 2:48.

Martin Keown tackles the big talking points ahead of the weekend, including the perils of VAR and Newport's clash with Manchester City.

Ajax this week became the first team to have a goal chalked off by VAR in the Champions League when the video officials got involved during their defeat by Real Madrid.

I was at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Wednesday and while there are still problems with technology — the fans were once more left in the dark over what was happening — I have to commend the bravery of referee Damir Skomina for his handling of the situation.

Nicolas Tagliafico thought he had scored to hand Ajax a 1-0 lead over Real Madrid

The opening goal was then ruled out after referee Damir Skomina consulted with VAR

How many times have we seen referees defer to the video official some 30-odd miles away without looking at a replay themselves? Skomina watched the incident three or four times before reaching his own conclusion.

VAR is in operation in two FA Cup fifth-round ties — Brighton v Derby and Chelsea v Manchester United.

In both games, I hope the on-field referees follow Skomina's lead and take control in any contentious situations. If VAR leads to referees passing the buck, players will quickly lose respect.

The bravery of referee Skomina must be commended for his handling of the situation

Given the demands on players now it is right to scrap fifth-round replays ,but I hope this is the last time the FA Cup's format is tinkered with.

Replays, particularly in the third and fourth rounds, are a big part of what makes this competition so magic.

Would Newport have set up this evening's huge clash with Manchester City had they not been able to take Middlesbrough to a replay?

MARTIN KEOWN'S BIG GAME PREVIEW

There is no doubt that the muddy Rodney Parade pitch will be a leveller.

On the pristine Premier League surfaces Manchester City are used to, you do not have to work to control the ball.

On Newport's pitch, City will have less time to be creative. Get the basics wrong and you can be punished.

This tie reminds me of Arsenal's FA Cup replay at Port Vale. That was on our way to winning the Double in 1998.

The pitch was like running through treacle. Straight away I knew we would have to dig in and fight. In the end, we scraped through on penalties.

City may be overwhelming favourites but they'll have to be up for a scrap.

Manchester City will need to show fight and desire on Newport's Rodney Parade pitch
