[Music] Hi everyone and welcome to The
Balancing Act--a very special one-- I'm
Olga Villaverde
and I'm Amber Milt, it is a special one
I'm so excited today because it was
truly a dream come true for me I got to
make a Broadway debut-- I want to thank
everybody at Chicago, the musical, and of
course the team at Broadway Across
America.
My performance was the 21st
anniversary of the show coming to
Broadway-- big night-- and I'm really
thankful to all my friends who came out
to see it.
Plus we're exploring the
hidden health benefits of collagen.
Oh yes another important thing, and
we're never too old to learn how to
pick the right online university for you.
So The Balancing Act starring Amber
Milt in Chicago.
Starts right now, let's razzle-dazzle them!
[Laughter] [Music]
Broadway Balances America brought to you
by Broadway Across America, bringing the
best of Broadway to a city near you.
Time now for Broadway Balances America,
our series that takes you behind the
scenes of some of the most beloved
Broadway musicals as they appear across
the country and into your local theaters,
today Chicago.
Yes this is a true New
York City institution.
Chicago has
everything that makes Broadway great,
it's got a universal tale of fame,
fortune, all that jazz, show-stopping
songs, amazing dancing, and well it's got
me for one night only!
Not only did I
get to go behind the scenes and tour the
backstage I got to meet the production's
creative powerhouses.
And you were hot!
I got to be in the show-- Check this
out!
Ladies and gentlemen you're about to
see a story of murder, greed,
corruption, violence, exploitation,
adultery, and treachery, all those things we
hold near and dear to our hearts.
And so it begins
the longest running American Broadway
musical.
[Music] For 21 years the award-winning
show has been razzle-dazzling theather
goers both here and abroad.
From the creative team
to its leading ladies, this is one
production that definitely has legs.
Fran and Barry Weissler are the show
producers.
You both have such an illustrious career and are
really Broadway royalty-- focusing on
Chicago, which-- yes you are Broadway
royalty.
The king and Queen.
What do you think it is that's so
magical about the show?
We thought that
the audience was ready for something
performance driven so this is about the
actors and so the set is on stage the
orchestra is on stage and it features
the actors and it's their show and we
thought it was time for that, for that to
happen.
Well I, I think it's timeless
material.
The subject matter is universal
the, the, the conflict between men and
women.
Our show's about people who are beautiful enough, and rich
enough to get away with murder.
At the heart of the
show set in the razzle-dazzle of the roaring
1920s are two rival vaudevillian murderesses Roxie Hart and Velma
Kelly, who are locked up in Cook County
Jail.
Over the last two decades they've been
played by the best of the best.
Are these your shoes?
No these they gave me downstairs, I
met Kevin.
Do you get to keep them?
I mean they might have to pry them off of me.
So Charlotte you've
been with the show 20 years, on and off,
touring what do you think it is about
Chicago that that people find so magical?
One reason is because of people coming
in and out and different celebrities and
different people, it's always fresh and
also it's just timeless.
It's about the
media and being successful and being
famous and that's all that seems to be
what people care about-- it's being
successful by being famous and, and beating the system.
It was Bob Fosse,
Kander and Ebb and we had an incredible
first cast but I think it's universal,
I think it's visual, I think it's the
music, it's exciting to watch, it's got
danger, it's got sex,y it's got all those
things and so we end up really crossing
all the cultural boundaries.
So this is
my view.
This is unbelievable.
I know right?!
With one great showstopper after the
next, John Kander and Fred Ebbs now classic
score keeps the story moving at a
razzle-dazzle pace.
So Tom it's 21 years
now that this shows been on Broadway.
Yea, like 21 years today!
I know can you believe they're letting me
on?!
Don't worry we'll take care of you, don't worry.
And taking care of me, they did.
Okay so we've got two weeks to go
until Chicago, so I'm headed to the gym
now I've been going enough but I thought
you guys might want to see what I'm
doing to get ready—check this out.
[Music] Have you seen those ladies in
their William Ivey Long designed
costumes, or lack thereof.
Sexy indeed, with their fishnets
and bowler hats, a tribute to the
original Bob Fosse choreography.
Okay everybody so it is show day,
it's finally here!
I've got so much to do I've gotta
get in hair fittings, I've got to go get
into costume fittings-- what little there
is of them-- and then I've gotta rehearse
because they've sent me some lines to
practice but I haven't done any rehearsal yet and we are
literally hours away from the show so I gotta go
[Music] Take the hat and you come to,
remember the 10 and the gold which
naturally you did.
If you're farther up or
down don't worry about it, this is,
this is the alignment that we are
looking for.
Since this is in your right
hand, take your left hand put it on the
other end of it, Boom.
Boom.
Yes.
All those things we hold
near and dear.
All those things we hold near and dear to our
hearts.
So they just put me through my paces for
learning a little bit of choreography,
How am I doing?
Um, you should be in
the show.
Then I'll go back step, step.
[Music] Give them an act with
with lots of flash and the reaction will be
passionate.
Right here is gonna be a lady.
Oh.
So you're gonna be going up stage
of her.
Got it thank you.
She's gonna be upside down in the split.
Okay no bigs; Totally normal.
Do you have any advice, I'm going on
tonight my first performance.
Okay.
And it's really close now, I think we're
like just hours, hours away from this.
Do you have any
advice?
Just stay in the moment and have
a good time, that's what I would say and
let people lead you, you know what I mean.
Like if you get lost or anything there are
gonna be people there helping you.
It's really emotional actually to be
doing this, I haven't been on stage
in, in years and TVs is different so I'm
feeling really blessed today-- just a
dream come true.
What goes over this where's the rest of the costume?
[Music] Ladies and gentlemen presenting
the silver tongue prince of the
courtroom, the one the only Mr. Billy
Flynn.
So can you tell people about Billy
Flynn, what's his character like?
Billy Flynn.
You know what's the phrase I could use,
morally challenged?
No I wouldn't even say that,
you know he's a really good lawyer.
Okay.
And brings with him all of the character
flaws and assets that come with being a
really, really good lawyer and winning
the case is what it's all about and he has the sort of self
awareness and self knowledge that it's all
a show.
Life is a show, so make it a good one.
It's all a circus kid, a three-ring
circus.
These trials, the whole world-- it's all show business.
Kid you are working with a star.
Give ‘em the old razzle dazzle, razzle dazzle ‘em.
Give ‘em an ac with lots of flash in
it and the reaction will be passionate.
More relevant today than when it was
first written, the press and audiences
everywhere have given the show many
well-deserved ovations.
We're ahead of
our time because this is a show where
women become empowered, and when they
become angry with the situation between
the males and females in their world.
They kill them.
They do in the bad guys you know there's no trial,
they're on trial, but the other fellow is
gone.
It's Broadway in every way; it has
dancing, it has singing, and it's all
incorporated beautifully into storytelling.
You get to see brilliant actors performing brilliant material
and you get a great story along with it
that is just not told and it's sort of
the dangerous fun tale and I think
that that's just universally
exciting.
Could I have one last picture please?
Oh it is, it's a lot of work.
They make it look so easy but this is not
easy but I do feel like I am in the best
hands tonight everybody, Mikey-- he literally has my back-- Malin
has just been amazing, Charlotte, Tom,
everybody has been so welcoming.
It was more, everything and
then some.
Thank you guys.

[Music]
[Music] Don't give up--
You can still do it, it doesn't matter
how old you are.
I didn't do the traditional college track
straight out of high school, I went back to
school when I was thirty.
You can do it at
whatever age you need to.
Online education at the college level
is more popular than ever and women are
leading the charge in fac,t women make
up-- get this-- 70% of the total online
college aged population.
Wow.
Not only do online
educations give a great return on
investment but the convenience of
attending class from particularly
anywhere it fits the needs and schedules
of today's busiest goal-oriented
women.
So here with all the insight is the
president of independence University
Eric Juhlin good morning.
Good morning.
Can you tell I'm pumped about this?
I'm very excited, thank you for having me.
No thank you for
being here, because I've actually thought
of doing online education so let's talk
about the popularity.
Sure.
Why so?
So what you're seeing today is
people really need flexibility to go to
education and to go back to college you
know, they have jobs, they have kids, they
have all these demands and online
colleges frankly, you know fit their
schedules.
Now all of them are flexible,
but what sets your online program apart?
We believe the right way to do it is
have a tremendous amount of student
support to help those students while
they're online-- So its student advisors,
its counselors, its interaction with
other students that's what makes Independence University
different is the amount of student support we
provide.
Every single student at Independence
University is assigned a student advisor
and they're part of a team that engages
with those students on a weekly basis as
they're going through school then if
they have problems or challenges we have
free tutoring 24/7, we have live people
that can help them on how to write term
papers and work through you know becoming better at written
skills.
So you have all these layers of support
built in to help the student and
engage with the student proactively
to make them successful.
You also help in
terms of career development when they're
done, it's not like okay you graduated,
move on-- You help them also move on.
We have a career services team that
starts engaging with students a couple
of months after school and they
work on interview skills and how to
dress and they do mock interviews at the
end and they help them with job
placement leads and help them find a job so
we're not about just education for
education sake we're about career specific
education to get in, get out, and get a job.
And what about credits from other schools
or some times those credits not
counting, how does that work?
We believe that we should
try to give a student as much credit as
we can for any education they've done
because think about what that does, that
shortens the amount of time they're in
school to get that degree to help them
get a better life.
And I know you have a
very high satisfaction rate, you do it
differently don't you?
We do, we don't run
semesters, we run classes four weeks at a
time and you take one class every four
weeks and at the end of those four weeks
we survey our entire population and
we're very proud we run about a 95 to 98
percent satisfaction rate.
Let's talk
about areas of study that people are
doing today.
Sure, we run all degree programs;
associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, and
some master's degrees, but what we find
are the most popular programs right now
our business programs-- like business
management and accounting-- and then the
medical field-- there's a lot of demand in
the medical field.
There always will be, yeah.
On our medical programs with the aging
population we're seeing strong demand
for that.
A lot of people out there will
say well it's online I don't really get
to meet anybody face to face but you do
something differently, there is an
opportunity.
We go around the country to
different areas periodically, and we hold
these group meetings and we invite all
the independents University students, all
the faculty that teach from that area-- I
go to some of them.
It's like a retreat!
It's like a get-together, a little family
reunion, for all the IU students and then
then they also have the graduation every
year where we invite all the Independent
students to come to Salt Lake City Utah
where we do all our graduations.
So you can study independently, but you're
never alone.
Never alone, in fact that's the
worst thing to happen you know, you don't
want to be alone, you need student
support, faculty support, student advisors,
career services, you need all of those
things to be successful in online.
So for someone out there that's been
dying to get a degree and says I can't, I
can't afford it, I don't have time,
I've got kids, I'm a single mom, you
would say?
You can afford it!
We have a whole team of
students, what we call financial planners, and they work with
every student to find scholarships and
financial aid that they qualify for in
grants and tuition reimbursement and
employer programs so that we help each
student design a plan that helps make
college affordable for them and so they
can be successful.
Go to our website it's
independence dot edu and once there they
can find out everything they need to
know.
Thank you so much Olga.
Appreciate it.
I just love your attitude too, so
passionate.
Also you can visit our website thebalancingact.com for more
information [Music]
[Music] Okay so let's face it we're all
getting older and along with that comes
new aches and pains, wrinkles and
reduced energy, not to mention the lack
of bouncing back-- The reason?
Well as we age
our bodies start to lose the ability to
repair our connective tissue, which
impacts bones, tendons, ligaments,
cartilage, and even our skin, hair, and
nails.
How depressing is this?
Well we've got great news!
Science has discovered hydrolyzed
collagen, and it may provide the missing
link our bodies need to repair these
critical areas.
Here from Great Lakes
Gelatin to talk more about collagen and
how it benefits your body are Barry
Gurewitz and Paola Leicht, good morning.
Morning.
Good morning.
So collagen it's really important for
our body, why?
Well as we age we lose the
ability to replenish collagen and
therefore you know taking a supplement
is a really good thing for your body.
Because we don't have the collagen so we
don't really have the same kind of hair,
right?
Has that happened to you, well you, you're
too young.
Well actually Olga, you
start losing collagen at 25.
Really?
Absolutely.
I thought it happened more like when you
face menopause.
Nope, 25.
25 years old you
start losing collagen.
That's right.
Which again, affects women there's no
doubt about it.
Our skin and everything.
Absolutely.
So Barry how do we replace
collagen?
Lots of people take capsules.
Sure, well you know our product is, is a
hydrolyzed-- which means it's soluble in
water, whether it be--any liquid
really—hot, cold, ambient temperatures, you can
put two tablespoons of this product you
know in your coffee as an example, and
you do that twice a day and, and that
gives you the, the college and the protein
that your body needs.
And is that what you do
Paola because I know you brought some
great ingredients, you incorporate it
into all this?
So coffee and smoothies
are really the most popular application
but orange juice, I mean I even put it in
my eggs.
Really?
I scramble the two
tablespoon serving into it and I eat it
all up.
Now Barry what makes Great Lakes
Gelatin different from other brands.
Right, so Great Lakes Gelatin has been around
since 1922 this product was introduced to
the North American market in 2010 and
previously a hydrolyzed soluble collagen
didn't exist you know on the marketplace.
We're a market leader with an impeccable
record for quality and for safety.
You get good
feedback?
Yeah so on amazon.com for
example, you know combined, we have over
9,000 reviews with a really great rating of over four
and a half.
And you're here so I'm gonna ask you for
your review, you feel better, you feel
like you look better.
I do, so right now
I'm mostly taking it for the beauty
aspects and I feel I have much longer
hair, stronger nails-- which was always a
problem for me-- so that's great and then
you know I just feel more energy, I feel
better about myself.
Who should be using
this supplement?
Really this this product
is great for anybody.
Children and adults?
Sure children and adults can certainly
take collagen hydrolysate.
And I can only
imagine also from externally which is
very important for a woman sure, but
internally too, because I know for the
digestive tract as well too right Paola?
That's right, yeah and especially for
people who are celiac's or people with
autoimmune disease it's, it's great in
repairing that digestive tract.
So Barry where do we get the supplement?
So this product is our top seller
although we have a lot of other products
available and they're all at Great Lakes
Gelatin dot com.
Great Lakes Gelatin dot com.
Correct.
Thank you so much for your time.
Thank you.
