Sock sent packing in ASB Classic,Updates

Auckland - Top-seed and defending champion Jack Sock made a surprise exit from the ATP Tours ASB Classic in its second round on Wednesday, beaten 6-3, 6-3 by unseeded German Peter Gojowczyk.

Gojowczyk, ranked 65th, moved the eighth-ranked Sock around the court with deep ground strokes which created angles the American was unable to defend.

After dropping serve in the fifth game of the first set, Gojowczyk broke Sock in the sixth and eighth games to take the set in 32 minutes.

Gojowczyk served strongly and broke the top seed in the seventh and ninth games of the second set to post his second win over a top-10 player. Grumpy Sock hits back at criticism after dreadful loss.

Jack Sock was forced to defend his performance at the ASB Classic after an unexpectedly poor result against Peter Gojowczyk on Wednesday.

Sock, the world No 8, top seed and defending champion in Auckland, never got into the match and meekly lost it 6-3 6-3 to the world No 65.

At times Sock could be accused of not caring whether hed win this match, playing some slack shots and 20 minutes after it finished he left the venue in a shuttle bus, no doubt on his way to the 6.

Its my first match of the year, he said. I dont know what the expectations were, some people can come out and play great like I did last year, when I came to this week and played amazing tennis.

I love this event, I wish I could have stayed longer but it wasnt my day, I didnt find my game as much as he did.

While its true this was Socks first ATP tournament of the year, he did play in the Hopman Cup last weekend and in his last match there he narrowly lost to Roger Federer 7-6 7-5.

Sock then became prickly when asked to explain this upset result to Gojowczyk. Am I the first top 10 guy to lost to a guy outside the top 50? Probably not, he said.

Its my first match of the year, I dont know what you guys expect of me. I could have come out and played amazing, I could have come out and played like today.

Its not like I came out and played terrible tennis, the guy really did play some amazing tennis. On a quicker court and windy conditions, the guy was slapping balls all around and taking it to me.

Its not an ideal start to my season like last year, but I love being here in Auckland, Ive had amazing memories here, but this year unfortunately it wasnt the same.

Sock insisted he gave it everything in this match and said it shouldnt be forgotten how well Gojowczyk played. I was up a break in the first set, you guys act like I lost 6-0 6-0, Sock said.

The guy hit some unbelievable returns, he was painting lines all over the place, slapping balls coming in. I didnt have my best serving day, which didnt help. I got some free points but not enough.

It was a rusty first match, but youve got to get the cobwebs off, the ball didnt feel as good as it has in the past. Ranking wise I should win, but its not going to happen every day of the year.
