North Korea said Sunday that claims by the Trump administration are "misleading public

opinion."

U.S. officials have claimed sanctions and increased political pressure forced the North

to the negotiating table, but North Korean officials say that's not completely true.

The North is also reportedly upset by the U.S.' stance that it won't lift any sanctions

until North Korea completely abandons nuclear efforts.

A spokesman for the North told the country's official news agency that the U.S. is QUOTE

"deliberately provoking" the Hermit Kingdom when the situation on the peninsula is moving

toward peace.

The comments come ahead of a historic planned summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un

and U.S. President Donald Trump and follow a meeting between Kim and South Korean President

Moon Jae-In.

Hyundai is Making it Easier for U.S. Dealers to Sell Genesis Luxury Cars - Duration: 3:11.

Genesis has been on a bit of a roller coaster since it was spun off from Hyundai as its

own luxury brand.

Until recently, the plan was to open a whole new dealer network for Genesis so the fancy

luxury cars wouldn't have to share showrooms with Elantras.

According to a recent report in Automotive News, the previous plan to sell Genesis vehicles

exclusively through standalone dealers has been revised to make all U.S. Hyundai dealers

eligible to sell Genesis luxury cars.

Genesis has planned to roll out a chain of Genesis retailers consisting of about 100

stores in 48 markets.

Genesis franchises need to be applied for separately and the dealerships still need

to set aside special stores and service facilities just for Genesis, but it seems like it's gotten

a lot easier for American Hyundai dealers to sell luxury cars.

"By having more nationwide distribution, you're going to allay consumer fears that they'll

be traveling and not be able to get service on their vehicle," said a southern U.S. Genesis

dealer to Automotive News.

"If it pans out, it'll be a great thing.

It'll help sell more cars, it'll help overall dealer profitably, strengthen their dealer

network, and include all those who want to sell the product, and believe in the Genesis

product, to sell and service those cars.

I think it's a great decision."

So, if a Hyundai dealer does go forward with a Genesis franchise, how will that work?

"For those that chose to become a Genesis franchisee, the same requirements as we had

before to achieve brand separation and independence still remain: for example the standalone facility

requirement remains the same as before so they must provide a separate Genesis facility

to our design and spec requirements by 2021," said Genesis representative Kevin Smith in

an email to The Drive.

The total number of dealers selling Genesis vehicles may actually be higher than earlier

expectations.

While the plan was to just have the 100 or so standalone dealers, now the number depends

on how many Hyundai dealers apply for Genesis franchises and how many of them are approved.

Genesis is trying to find a happy medium by keeping a measure of exclusivity to the brand

while still being accessible to the people who want the cars.

If you're in the market for a Genesis and you were worried about how you were going

to get one, it should be easier than previously thought despite the push for exclusivity.

China, U.S. agree on need to address N. Korea threat - Duration: 0:38.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his Chinese counterpart, Yang Jiechi , have agreed

on the need to address the threat North Korea poses to regional stability,... signaling

that unless they're sure that North Korea is committed to take steps towards denuclearization,

they're not going to loosen up international pressure on the regime.

The U.S. State Department said in a statement that Pompeo and Yang reached the agreement

in a telephone conversation on Saturday ahead of the North Korea-U.S. summit.

The two officials discussed having high-level talks between China and the U.S. during the

latter half of this year.

US Maternal Mortality the Highest of Any Developed Country. Are There Any Solutions? - Duration: 5:03.

SOLEDAD: THESE MOMS ARE PUSHING CONGRESS TO FINALLY TAKE ACTION.

I AM SOLEDAD O'BRIEN.

WELCOME TO "MATTER OF FACT COME KOKE TO YOU FROM NEW YORK CITY.

THIS WEEKEND'S MARCH FOR -- MATTER OF FAC," COMING TO YOU FROM NEW YORK CITY.

THIS WEEKEND'S MARCH FOR MOMS ADDRESSES CONVOCATIONS WITH PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH.

BRBLACK WOMEN ARE THREE TO FOUR TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DIE IN CHILDBIRTH.

MORE THAN HALF OF THOSE DEATHS ARE CONSIDERED PREVENTABLE.

KRISTI TURLINGTON BECAME AN ADVOCATE FOR MATERNAL HEALTH AFTER EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH THE BIRTH OF HER FIRST CHILD.

SHE NOW HEADS THE NONPROFIT EVERY MOTHER COUNTS.

LISA IS AN OB/GYN WHO SPECIALIZES IN MATERNAL MEDICINE.

TAKE US BACK TO YOUR CHILD'S BIRTH.

WHAT WENT WRONG?

CHRISTIE: I CAME INTO MOTHERHOOD PREPARED AND READY FOR THIS EXPERIENCE, AND I HAD A LOT OF OPTIONS.

I LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY.

I WANTED TO HAVE AN UNMEDICATED BIRTH, SO I HAD A MIDWIFE.

I ALSO HAD BACKUP IN CASE THINGS DID NOT GO AS PLANNED.

THE DELIVERY WENT FINE, BUT THERE ARE STILL THINGS HAPPENING.

THERE'S STILL BIRTHING THAT'S HAPPENING.

SO I DID NOT DELIVER MY PLACENTA AS YOU NORMALLY WOULD IN A VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD WAY.

AND BECAUSE OF THAT THE DOCTOR NEEDED TO BE CALLED AND I HEMORRHAGED.

I LOST A LOT OF BLOOD.

AND COMING OUT OF THE EXPERIENCE I HAD A LOT OF QUESTIONS.

AND I CAME ACROSS STAGGERING INFORMATION AT THE TIME WHICH WAS THAT POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE WAS THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD AND THAT WE WERE LOSING

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF WOMEN EVERY YEAR SOLEDAD: IT'S A CRAZY STATISTIC, AND NOT JUST AROUND THE GLOBE.

IF YOU FOCUS ON THE UNITED STATES, OTHER DEVELOPED COUNTRIES ARE MAKING A LOT OF PROGRESS ON MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH, BUT THE U.S. IS DOING WORSE.

WHY IS THAT?

>> THE REASONS ARE MANY.

IT STEMS FROM EDUCATION OF THE MOM TO MULTISYSTEM PROBLEMS WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION OF HOSPITALS.

SOLEDAD: IT DEFINITELY FEELS LIKE PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO HAVE A CONVERSATION IN WAYS WE WERE NOT HAVING EVEN FIVE YEARS AGO.

IT WAS ALSO SHOCKING -- I FEEL LIKE I HAVE USED THE WORD SHOCKING A BUNCH OF TIMES -- THAT BLACK WOMEN HAVE A MORTALITY RATE 3-4 TIMES HIGHER THAN THEIR WHITE COUNTERPARTS.

I THINK OFTENTIMES WE THINK OF THAT AS A CORRELATION WITH SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS, BUT IF YOU ADJUST FOR THOSE AND CONTROL FOR THOSE, COLLEGE-EDUCATED BLACK WOMEN AND MIDDLE-CLASS BLACK

WOMEN ARE MORE LIKELY TO DIE IN CHILDBIRTH.

WHY IS THAT?

LIKE SOME OF THAT IS RELATED TO CHRONIC ILLNESSES.

THERE IS A HIGHER RATE OF CHRONIC DISEASE LIKE DIABETES, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.

BUT EVEN WITHOUT THOSE PROBLEMS, THERE IS A HIGHER RATE OF MORTALITY AND WE NEED TO DRILL DOWN ON THAT.

THAT IS ONE OF THE NEW INITIATIVES THAT ARE COMING OUT TO ADDRESS WHETHER RACIAL DISPARITIES ARE RELATED TO THIS INCREASE IN MORTALITIES.

SO, THESE BUNDLES HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED THROUGH THE ALLIANCE FOR MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH SO THAT HOSPITALS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES CAN BEGIN TO IMPLEMENT THESE CARE PACKAGES.

THE BUNDLES ARE SIMILAR TO WHEN YOU FLY ON DELTA AND AMERICAN, IF THE PLANE IS TURBULENT, THEY TELL YOU TO PUT UP YOUR TRAY AND RAISE YOUR SEAT.

THESE ARE EVIDENCE-BASED PROTOCOLS HOSPITALS CAN U SO THAT EVERY TIME SOMETHING HAPPENS, THEY DO THE SAME THING.

THE PATIENT IS HEMORRHAGING, WE CALL THE BLOOD BANK, WE PUT AN IV IN.

SOLEDAD: YOU HAVE BEEN DOING THIS WORK SINCE YOUR FIRST CHILD WAS BORN.

DO YOU SEE PROGRESS GLOBALLY?

CHRIST GLOBALLY, TREMENDOUS PROGRESS.

THAT'S THE THING THAT IS SO STRIKING ABOUT THE U.S.

WE WERE RANKED 41ST.

TODAY, WE ARE RANKED 46TH.

WE HAVE FALLEN FURTHER BEHIND.

THAT IS WHAT'S BEGGING THE QUESTION.

WE MADE INCREDIBLE IMPROVEMENTS IN THE 1930'S, BROUGHT THESE RATES DOWN VERY, VERY LOW, AND NOW WE HAVE SEEN A RISE IN THE LAST TWO DECADES OR SO.

THE OUTCOMES ARE PROVEN TO BE SO MUCH STRONGER WHEN YOU HAVE SOMEBODY BY YOUR SIDE GOING THROUGH THIS.

Nunes Just Called Out John Kerry For Violating This MAJOR U.S. Law - Duration: 2:38.

Nunes Just Called Out John Kerry For Violating This MAJOR U.S. Law

John Kerry is a busy little bee lately.

He's buzzing all over Iran, working behind the scenes against President Trump to keep

his disastrous "nuclear deal" afloat.Rep. Devin Nunes, who sent out a tweet that many

thought was tongue-in-cheek, may have just thrown a stumbling block in Kerry's path,

because joking or not, what Nunes said about Kerry is ringing true to a lot of people.

From Washington Examiner

A report Friday, detailing how former Secretary of State John Kerry has spoken with foreign

leaders about salvaging the Iran nuclear deal, has stirred talk about a violation of the

Logan Act.Meanwhile, Tom Fitton, who heads the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch,

said "Kerry making quiet play to save Iran deal with foreign leaders: report.

I'm waiting for the Left to scream treason and for Sally Yates to invoke the Logan Act

and demand a criminal investigation."He was referring to former acting Attorney General

Sally Yates, who was concerned that former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn

had violated the Logan Act during the presidential transition period after he discussed policy

issues with a Russian envoy.

The Logan Act is a more than 200-year-old law under which no one has ever been prosecuted,

that prohibits private citizens from acting on behalf of the U.S. in disputes with foreign

governments.

President Trump found himself beset by Logan Act talk after the Republican Convention during

2016 campaign, when Trump sarcastically invited Russia to produce the 30,000-plus emails that

Hillary Clinton deleted rather than turn over to investigators. The Iran deal, struck in

2015, was struck during the Obama administration and put Iran's nuclear program on ice in

exchange for relief from crippling sanctions.

Trump, who has until May 12 to decide whether to continue on with the agreement, seek changes,

or abandon it, has indicated he intends to pull out of the Iran deal, provided it is

not altered, despite the protestations of European allies.

More States Trying to End Pray-Away-the-Gay: May 6 Debrief - Duration: 2:45.

A new survey shows that a majority of Americans oppose turn-away-the-gays laws, just as the

US Supreme Court prepares to rule on a major cake case.

Another state is about to ban conversion "therapy" for minors.

And Illinois just passed a bill that will fundamentally change the way schools talk

about queer people.

We'll have the week's top LGBT news and how it affects you on Weekly Debrief.

If you're enjoying Weekly Debrief, help keep it going with a pledge a dollar or more a

month on Patreon.

Visit patreon.com/mattbaume or click the link in the description to join the folks who make

these videos possible.

Let's start with the good news this week: 61 percent of Americans support marriage equality,

according to a new survey.

That's continuing a decade-long trend of steady growth.

The study also shows that 60 percent of Americans oppose laws that allow businesses to turn

away queer customers.

That's going to be a major topic of discussion in the next month, when the Supreme Court

is likely to rule on turn-away-the-gays.

Get ready for a lot of conversations about cakes for gay weddings, and if you need a

refresher about why businesses shouldn't be allowed to deny service on the basis of sexual

orientation, check out the video I made explaining the topic.

Bad news in Kansas, which is about to pass a new bill that would limit adoption by same-sex

couples.

The law would give publicly-funded adoption agencies an exemption to nondiscrimination

laws, letting them turn away qualified queer parents.

If the bill passes, it could face legal challenges depending on how the Supreme Court rules on

the cake case in the next few weeks.

In Hawaii, legislators just approved a bill banning conversion "therapy" for minors.

The governor is expected to sign, making Hawaii the 12th state with such a law.

California is considering going even further, banning the harmful practice altogether.

We'll be keeping a close eye on that effort, which could provide a path to banning pray-away-the-gay

camps nationwide.

And Illinois just passed a new law requiring schools to include a lesson in LGBTQ history.

California's the only other state with a similar requirement.

The exact content of the lessons are up to schools, but they must be accurate and nondiscriminatory.

The benefits of requirements like this are immeasurable: Illinois students will now learn

about people and events that were previously ignored or covered up, eliminating misinformation

and bigotry before it can become fully entrenched in students' minds.

Most of us had little to no formal education when it comes to queer history, so this week's

action item is to do something about that.

Pick up a book, read some Wikipedia articles, or just Google queer history and see what's

out there.

Learning about past LGBT struggles connects us to each other and reminds us why it's so

important to continue fighting to defend the freedoms we enjoy today.

Let me know about stories that need covering @MattBaume on Twitter and in the YouTube comments.

THE U S DISTRICT ATTORNEY HAS ANNOUNCED THAT HE WILL BE PURSUING CHARGES OF TREASON AGAIN - Duration: 14:50.

THE U.S DISTRICT ATTORNEY HAS ANNOUNCED THAT HE WILL BE PURSUING CHARGES OF TREASON AGAINST

THE FORMER PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA..

Trump administration to charge Barack Obama with treason saying that "no one is above

the law".

When Trump sworn in a US President, he signed an executive order, that reversed a previous

order signed by Barack Obama just days before he left office that removed Dana Boente from

his position behind the Attorney General as second in line.

Dana Boente was bumped down the power scale without explanation from Obama, but with his

renewed authority, he now says he will bring charges against any liberals or Democrats

that are working to undermine the president.

It's widely believed that Obama, along with Hillary Clinton, is working with the Deep

State in a bid to overthrow Trump's presidency by inciting riots across America which Boente

considers to be an act of domestic terrorism.

According to a recent report by the New York Post, the former president has vowed to fight

his Republican successor at every turn of his historic presidency and Obama will command

an army of agitators from a bunker less than two miles from the White House.

CDTZT REPORTS : WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA IMMEDIATELY UPON LEAVING OFFICE ESTABLISHING A PRIVATE

WEBSITE AND PROCLAIMING ON IT THAT "I WON'T STOP; IN FACT, I WILL BE RIGHT THERE WITH

YOU, AS A CITIZEN, FOR ALL MY DAYS THAT REMAIN."

IT'S OBVIOUS TO EVEN LAYMEN TO DEDUCE THAT "THE BERKELEY RIOTS MAY HAVE BEEN ORDERED

BY PRESIDENT OBAMA HIMSELF."

THERE IS ENOUGH EVIDENCE FOR THE FBI TO IMPLICATE OBAMA FOR SEDITION AND TREASON BUT BEHIND

THE SCENES, THERE IS FIERCE DEBATE OVER THE FALLOUT INCLUDING WORRYING ABOUT TRAITORS

AT ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT IF ACTION WAS TAKEN AGAINST THE AGITATOR IN CHIEF.

Many concerns have been raised due to his gathering around him an "army of agitators"

(numbering more than 30,000) who he commands from a bunker less than two blocks from the

White House."Barack Obama, who many claim will be creating a shadow government to frustrate

the policy goals of this administration, we're looking at something that's coming very

close to, it seems to me, sedition," Lou Dobbs revealed.

US Interventions in Latin America Continue and Intensify - Duration: 13:50.

It's the Real News Network.

I'm Greg Wilpert coming to you from Quito, Ecuador.

Ten years ago, most of Latin America was governed by center-left progressive or even leftist

governments.

For example, Cristina Fernandez in Argentina, Evo Morales in Bolivia, Rafael Correa in Ecuador,

Fernando Lugo in Paraguay, Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua, Manuel Zelaya in Honduras, and

Lula da Silva in Brazil, just as an example.

And Hugo Chavez, of course, in Venezuela.

Since then, the so-called 'pink tide' has receded quite dramatically.

Of these 10 governments that were left of center, only four remain.

Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, Morales in Bolivia, Vazquez in Uruguay, and Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua.

What happened?

Some would argue that the U.S. played an important role in at least some of these changes.

Joining me to explore the role of the U.S. in Latin America is Mark Weisbrot.

Mark is the co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, and is the author

of the book "Failed: What the Experts Got Wrong About the Global Economy."

He's also the president of the organization Just Foreign Policy.

Thanks for being here again, Mark.

Thanks, Greg.

Thanks for having me.

So before we get into the role of the U.S. in Latin America, it's useful maybe to take

a quick look at the impact that the leftist or center-left governments had on Latin America.

What would you say were the main achievements or the main consequences of their governments

in some of those countries?

Well, if you look at the region as a whole, the poverty rate dropped from 44 to 28 percent.

That was from around 2003-2013.

And that was after the two decades prior where poverty had actually increased, there was

no progress at all.

So that was a huge change, and it was accomplished in different countries in different ways.

You know, there were large increases in public investment in Bolivia and Ecuador.

In Brazil you had also some increase in public investment , big increases in the minimum

wage.

You know, every country did different things to help bring healthcare, and increase, in

some countries, education, access to education.

And there were a whole lot of reforms.

Changes in macroeconomic policy.

Getting rid of the IMF.

So there were a lot of different things that these governments did that prior governments

were either unable or unwilling to do to improve people's living standards during a period

of higher economic growth, which they also contributed to.

And so how has Latin America changed now since then, when right-wing governments took over

most of the continent?

Well, you have different things that have changed.

I mean, one is, of course, they're implementing, as you would expect, right-wing reforms.

Trying to cut pension system, the pension in Brazil, passing a constitutional amendment

which, you know, even most economists in the world wouldn't support in Brazil, which prohibits

the government from increasing spending beyond the rate of inflation.

You have, you know, huge increases in utility prices in Argentina, laying off thousands

of public sector workers.

So everywhere where the right has come back, you do have some regressive changes.

And so how has the U.S. contributed to these changes, and what goals would you say is the

U.S. pursuing in the area?

Well, I think the U.S. has contributed in so many ways it would take an hour at least

to summarize just some of this history.

But I think the U.S. has been involved in, in most of these countries in various ways.

Obviously in Venezuela they've been involved since the coup in 2002, and they tried to

overthrow the government and tried to help people topple the government on several occasions

there.

In Brazil they supported the coup against Dilma, the parliamentary coup.

So they didn't do that strongly, but they sent enough signals, for example, I've mentioned

this before on this show, right as the House was voting to impeach Dilma without actually

presenting a crime that she committed, the head of the Foreign Relations Committee from

the Senate came and met with the number three official from the U.S. State Department, Tom

Shannon.

And then of course in August of that year, the Secretary of State John Kerry went down

there and had a press conference with the Acting Foreign Minister Jose Serra.

And they, of course, talked about how great relations with the U.S. were going to be before

Dilma was actually removed from office.

So these were ways of endorsing the coup.

And of course, the Department of Justice contributed to , the FBI, the Department of Justice contributed

to the investigation that was instrumental in imprisoning Lula.

Now, what they did in that investigation we don't know exactly, but we do know enough

about it to know that it wasn't a neutral investigation.

That is, the investigation did end up decapitating the Workers' Party for now, first helping

get rid of Dilma, but more importantly, or more substantially, in terms of its contribution,

they they helped put Lula in prison and prevent him from running for office.

And in other countries, in Paraguay, the U.S. helped in the consolidation of that parliamentary

coup by organizing within the Organization of American States.

In Honduras is probably the biggest role that the U.S. has played, both in consolidating

the military coup in 2009, Hillary Clinton acknowledged her role in making sure that

President Zelaya, the democratically elected president, would not return to office, and

then more recently in November they helped consolidate the results of an election which

pretty much all observers regarded as stolen.

Those are just a few of the examples.

I mean, I guess I didn't even mention Argentina, where other branches of government were involved

as well as the executive, but the executive cut off lending from multilateral development

banks such as the Inter-American Development Bank, and tried to block loans at the World

Bank, as well.

And they restored everything as soon as the right-wing government was elected.

And then there was Judge Griesa in New York, who took all of Argentina's, over 90 percent

of Argentina's creditors, hostage in order to squeeze them so that the government would

pay off the vulture funds.

And this was very political, because he also lifted the injunction as soon as you had the

right-wing government.

And I think this is very important, because obviously it's not necessarily a conspiracy

of all these branches of government.

The legislative branch was involved in this as well, in the United States.

But they all have the same mindset, and they're all trying to get rid of these left governments,

and they had a massive contribution.

I mean, Argentina, that did contribute to the downfall of Cristina Kirchner.

It contributed to balance of payments problems that they had there.

So this was important, and it's totally ignored here in the United States.

And then why was it ignored in the United States?

I mean, what is it about U.S. media coverage, and why is there so little coverage of U.S.

role and Latin America?

Well, you know, maybe you should interview some of the reporters who cover it, if they're

willing to answer that question.

I think that it's it's complicated in some ways, but in some ways it's very simple.

First of all, for U.S. intervention anywhere in the world they have a kind of a smoking

gun standard.

So you know, we have in our criminal justice system the standard of beyond a reasonable

doubt.

But this is a much higher standard.

So nothing is really discussed in terms of U.S. intervention unless it's really a smoking

gun, where they're caught red-handed in a way that nobody could deny.

And that almost never happens.

So in Venezuela, for example, in 2002 when you had the coup, you had State Department

and CIA documents which documented the involvement of the United States.

They helped fund and train the people who did the coup, and they made statements following

the coup that they knew were false in order to help the coup consolidate itself, and they

failed in that case.

But you know, in Haiti in 2004, which I hadn't even mentioned, they took the president and

put him on a rendition plane, and flew him out of the country.

That was in broad daylight.

But in any case, they have a story that's not at all believable, and the press kind

of accepts that and never looks back.

Whenever they mentioned, you know, Chavez complained about the coup, and it was a major

obvious source of bad relations with Venezuela, but they always just reported it as an allegation

of a figure that they of course were discrediting at every turn.

So that's kind of how they report all of these.

When they report the facts at all, they put it in the context that makes it look like

there wasn't any intent, or any real effect of U.S. policy in the region.

But mostly it's like reporting on Ukraine and never mentioning Russia, you know, it's

as if the United States doesn't have any real influence in the Americas, and of course anybody

knows they have an enormous influence.

GREG WILPERT: So what would you say are some of the implications for the foreseeable future

of this U.S. policy towards Latin America?

MARK WEISBROT: Well, right now, of course, they're still involved.

And you have intervention in Mexico, for example.

U.S. officials have already said how worried they are that AMLO, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador,

who is the frontrunner in the upcoming election in July.

And he's probably going to win, but they're already trying to undermine him, lobbying

accusations of Russia involvement, which is the new trend.

Of course, completely unsubstantiated.

In Venezuela they're doing something probably never done in the last 50 years, openly calling

for a military coup, and actually a financial embargo they've put in place, and threatening

even a worse embargo if they don't get rid of the current government.

So that's, I think, a more aggressive form of intervention than you had even under the

prior administrations.

And they're pretty open about it.

And again, most of the media seems to treat it as a non-issue.

In fact, that's actually a very important example, because there's an election going

to take place in a couple of weeks, and the media is pretending that it's not really an

election.

But you have a credible opposition candidate who's leading in the polls, and they've reached

agreement with the government on a set of procedures which are similar to almost all

the other elections they've had for hte last 20 years, and a set of guarantees, which of

course, the candidate Falcon won't recognize the election if they don't follow them.

So you have a real contested election, but the U.S. government has decided they don't

want that, and the hard-right opposition is in line with them, and so they're all pretending

there's no election at all, because they're committed to a strategy of violence, of regime

change.

GREG WILPERT: OK.

We'll certainly continue to follow this, especially the U.S. role in Latin America.

I was speaking to Mark Weisbrot, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

Thanks again, Mark, for joining us today.

MARK WEISBROT: Thank you, Gregory.

GREG WILPERT: And thank you for joining the Real News Network.

US Navy Announces Resurrection of Second Fleet As Russia Tensions Linger - Duration: 3:38.

US Navy Announces Resurrection of Second Fleet As Russia Tensions Linger

The United States Navy will re-establish the Second Fleet to oversee Naval forces in the

northern Atlantic Ocean as part of its new military strategy aimed at countering Russia.

"Our National Defense Strategy makes clear that we're back in an era of great power

competition as the security environment continues to grow more challenging and complex," Chief

of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson announced Friday, according to the BBC.

"That's why today, we're standing up Second Fleet to address these changes, particularly

in the north Atlantic," he said.Richardson announced the return of the combat organization

that oversaw naval forces in the North Atlantic throughout the Cold War while he was on board

the USS George H. W. Bush in Norfolk, Virginia.

"Second Fleet will exercise operational and administrative authorities over assigned

ships, aircraft and landing forces on the East Coast and northern Atlantic Ocean,"

Richardson said, according to Reuters. The Second Fleet will also oversee maritime, joint

and combined operations and training for those operations.Who will command the fleet and

which naval assets have been assigned have not yet been announced.

Initial accounts said the fleet will be staffed with 15 people to start.

Also on Friday, the Pentagon said it has offered to host a proposed NATO Joint Force Command

at Norfolk.NATO is refocusing on the Atlantic in recognition of the great power competition

prompted by a resurgent Russia," said Pentagon spokesman Johnny Michael, according to CNN.

The Second Fleet was disbanded in 2011, during the Obama administration, as a means to reduce

costs. At its peak, the Second Fleet was made up of 126 ships, 4,500 aircraft and 90,000

personnel. However, when Defense Secretary James Mattis presented the nation's new

strategy, which sets the stage for all policy decisions, he said China and Russia were "revisionist

powers" that "seek to create a world consistent with their authoritarian models."

"The re-establishment of the US Second Fleet is part of a wider strategy of re-orientating

the U.S. armed forces towards a world of renewed big power competition and away from the counter-insurgency

campaigns they have been fighting over recent decades," noted Jonathan Marcus, a defense

and diplomatic correspondent for the BBC.In this case, the focus is Russia — a response

to its stepped-up naval activity of recent years. The new headquarters will give more

coherent command arrangements for U.S. warships operating in the Atlantic," he said.

Administration officials have voiced concerns over a more bellicose Russian attitude toward

naval power in the Atlantic.

"They have launched a new submarine that I can safely say is closing the gap on some

of our technologies," Navy Secretary Richard Spencer told Congress last month. "But,

we are hard at work, also, to make sure that gap does not close and that the rate of the

gap does not increase."

N. Korea-U.S. summit likely to be held in Singapore in June - Duration: 2:15.

The date and location of the historic summit between North Korea and the United States

are finally set, but they haven't been officially announced.

Local media outlets in South Korea are speculating that it's likely to take place in June rather

than in May... and in Singapore and not in the the truce village of Panmunjom ... where

the inter-Korean summit took place.

Meanwhile, North Korea's foreign ministry sent a warning to Washington to stop its sanctions

and military threats against the regime.

Cha Sang-mi reports.

Reports say the first ever meeting between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean

leader is likely to take place in June in Singapore.

Citing multiple diplomatic sources in Washington, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported

Sunday that Singapore is the strongest candidate to host the Pyongyang-Washington summit...

despite President Trump expressing a preference for meeting in the demilitarized zone at the

so-called truce village of Panmunjom -- the place where the inter-Korean summit took place

less than ten days ago.

The report added that while the exact timing is still not clear, it seems to have been

pushed back to early June... before Trump visits Canada for the G-7 summit on June 8th

and 9th.

This comes after President Trump said both on Friday and Saturday that the date and location

of his summit with Kim Jong-un have been set, though he has still not said when or where.

The White House has announced that Trump will host his South Korean counterpart, President

Moon Jae-in, at the White House on May 22nd... before the North Korea summit.

It said they will "continue their close coordination on developments regarding the Korean Peninsula."

Meanwhile, in an interview with North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency, the

regime's foreign ministry spokesperson said on Sunday that the United States is keeping

up its sanctions and pressure on the regime in the name of human rights, as well as threatening

it militarily.

The spokesperson said Washington was mistaking what he called North Korea's "peace-loving

gesture" in coming to talks as "weakness," and said continuing to threaten and put pressure

on the regime would not solve any problems.

This is the first time North Korea has officially criticized the U.S. since the two sides decided

to hold talks.

GERMAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM VS US (FROM AN ASIAN 😂) - Duration: 9:49.

hi everyone I'm back and today video is bit weird right the health care system

in the US versus the health care system here in Germany so why would I, an Asian

and never been to the u.s. be interested in their health care system

well, the reasons are the combination of so many things. firstly, as a came here in

Germany I started paying $90 per month for my health care insurance I was like

why do I have to pay that much of money for only the insurance because I paid 20

euros less than 20 euros for my insurance in Vietnam and it was not only

for a month that was for the whole year. so I was intrigued by the health care

services in Germany which is known as the national healthcare system. secondly

my professor at the university to be honest is not be fan Donald Trump yeah

he usually occasionally inserted his opinions on how the American government

is regulating their country and recently it was about his trip to Chicago during

the last Easter holiday and he said that a lot of homeless people staying outside

and frozen to death because the American government let them be

responsible for their own health care and I was like what is going on there? to

be honest I'm not a big fan of America, sorry but yeah I'm not really into the

American dreams and all the sort of things so I have no idea about their

health care system. and the last but not least the health care system in the u.s.

is now a controversial topic in Reddit I saw a lot of posts about it

recently there was a guy posting the bill of curing his eight inch cut on his

wrist and it costed him like almost 36

thousand US dollars seriously is this insane so I made up my mind that I got

to know about their healthcare system like what is happening over there and if the

quality of services is worth what American citizens pay for them and as

I'm living in Germany I hope that I could have a chance to make a reasonable

comparison with the German healthcare system which is a representative of the

national healthcare system. however before start I'd like to say that I'm no

expert in this field I'm just a tiny person who is curious about this topic

and trying to wrap my head around it so if you're also like me that let's go. so

the first thing I noticed was that the health care in America is mostly

provided by the private sector, only some hospitals are run by the government also

almost all the physicians work for the private sector - and other components

like pharmaceutical companies or the medical device providers also in the

private sector. whereas in Germany the government runs the health care system

and as German citizens and people living in Germany you have to pay a monthly

statutory contributions in order to ensure the free health care for everyone

well as a student under 30 I have to pay 90 euros per month for my

contribution at TK. secondly in Germany around 87% of German population get

the statutory health insurance and it provides you with the same care whenever

you get ill whereas 11% of those get the private insurance those people are

probably really rich because it provides them with special treatments so to say

upon their requests like special treatment my senior doctors or private

hospital rooms and other sort of thing and yet you need to have the income

which is above 59,400 euros per year or 4950

euros per month as in 2018 to get that kind of private

insurance and in America around 10% of the under 65 population are

uninsured the data from 2016 and why they excluding the over sixty-five

because they have something called Medicare for those people which is

considered the closest thing to the single-payer system that American people

are insistently asking for. well and the 10% we are talking about equals

like 27 million people they are uninsured what a big number! as a

result of our private health care system the health care in the u.s. is extremely

expensive well let's take a look at the Bill of the guy from reddit he claimed

that he had an eight-inch cut and it costed him like nearly thirty six

thousand bucks let's pay attention to the x-rays tests they costed him 340

459, 590 bucks for

those I haven't had a chance to take an x ray here in Germany but I watched

this video from this dude he said that it costed him only 20 bucks 20 euros

sorry for the X ray in Germany Möchengladbach in particular he didn't

have any insurance at all and he's an American and also he was really

surprised because his visit to the emergency room only costed him like

60 euros more so 80 euros in total for the x-ray test

the emergency room and he also mentioned that if he was in America without any

insurance it would have been like 500 bucks for the same procedure the same

things that he had in Germany and like the emergency room costed this dude over

5,000 bucks unfortunately I didn't know like how long he stayed there or what

made that cost so much. so now I'm concerned here because with such high

prices for the health care and 27 million people without any insurance how

would they pay for the health care when they're in need? what actually drove the

US health care price that high? maybe because of the thought that if you want

something done right you give it to the private sector. but in this case it

doesn't work as efficiently I really like how VOX explained it they basically

say that when it comes to health care we consumers have the least bargaining power

like we come to the hospitals when we're ill and we can't say no to that sort of things.

As in Germany the government says no for us like they negotiate the price with

the pharmaceutical companies and stuff and if those companies want to provide

services to German people they have to accept that price. and meanwhile in the

u.s. that bargaining procedure belongs to the private insurance companies and

yet they can't be as powerful as the government. as a result the drugs and

health care services are much more pricy in America. some examples:

some more facts about the u.s. healthcare system as a percent of the economy

American spends much more on health care than Germans 17.7%

versus 11.3%. however they visit doctors less than

in Germany but they pay more for the drugs and health care services as I said

earlier. and one more interesting fact I read that they pay the doctors based on

the number of services that the doctor provides not the outcomes of the

patients like or according to VOX that their income largely depends on whether

or not they perform the surgery regardless of the patient outcomes. and

finally let's look at how the health care system in the US and Germany

perform. as I know more about it the health care system in America and here

in Germany I feel even luckier to have a chance to live here in Germany. thank

you guys for watching my youtube video if you liked it please give me a big

like and don't forget to subscribe see you next time :)

HOW CHINA IS PROVOKING BY DEPLOYING MISSILE IN SCS & TARGETING U.S AIRCRAFTS WITH LASERS ? - Duration: 5:38.

US news network CNBC reported yesterday that China had installed anti-ship cruise missiles

and surface-to-air missile systems on 3 outposts in the South China Sea, citing sources with

direct knowledge of US intelligence.

A US official, disclosed on condition of anonymity, that US intelligence had seen signs that China

had moved some weapons systems to the Spratly Islands in the past month or so, but offered

no details.

Reports suggest that the missiles were moved to Fiery Cross Reef, Subi Reef and Mischief

Reef in the Spratly Islands within the last 30 days.

China defended the deployment of missile systems in the South China Sea.

It said that it has "indisputable sovereignty" over the area.

Unconfirmed reports indicate the missiles are YJ-12B anti-ship cruise missile and HQ-9B

surface-to-air missiles.

This deployment comes as China has stepped up its mischiefs in Horn of Africa.

The United States has officially complained to China alleging two U.S. airmen were targeted

with military grade lasers by China in Djibouti.

In this video, Defense Updates analyzes how China is provoking by deploying missile in

South China Sea & targeting U.S aircrafts with lasers in Djibouti?

Lets get started.

China claims most of the South China Sea and the East China Sea.

Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan have disputed these claims.

The route is significant as about $5 trillion in trade through shipping passes each year.

Countries like US, Japan and India have no claims in the area and want 'Freedom of

Navigation' as per international maritime laws.

China has tried imposing a unilateral decision as per which all ships navigating in the area

needs to identify itself to the Chinese Navy.

According to Chinese sources, the YJ-12 has a speed of around Mach 2, if launched from

low altitude and up to Mach 3.2, if launched from high altitude.

It has maximum range of 380 km depending on launch altitude so it can fired from far off.

In the terminal phase the missile can travel at a very low altitude of 15 m, which makes

it hard for the sensors to detect.

When this missile appears over the horizon and gets detected by ship's sensors, the

ship would only have some 45 seconds to intercept it before impact.

The speed, range and ability to skim close to the sea surface makes it one of the most

deadly anti ship missile in world.

A saturation attack by YJ-12's will be hard to defend against even by sophisticated defenses

of US military.

The HQ-9 is China's new generation medium- to long-range, active radar homing surface-to-air

missile.

The most fundamental formation of a HQ-9 batteries consists of multiple radars, command control

center, supporting vehicles and 8 Transporter erector launchers (TELs) each with 4 missiles,

totaling 32 rounds ready to fire.

To maximize the combat effectiveness of HQ-9, dedicated Fire Control Radar is present.

Designated as HT-233 it has a range of 300 km.

Similar to the Russian S-300V, the HQ-9 is a two-stage missile.

The missile has a total mass of almost 2 tons and a length of 6.8m.

The missile is equipped with a 180 kg warhead, has a maximum speed of Mach 4.2 and has a

maximum range of 200 km.

The system could target aircraft, drones and cruise missiles potential making it dangerous

for the US Air force to enter the airspace protected by it.

Eric Sayers, a former consultant to the commander of the US Pacific Command, called the missile

deployment "a major escalation".

Mr. Sayers said, "When China sees that it can get away with these types of actions with

little cost — as they did all through 2015 and 2016 — it only makes it more likely

they will keep pressing,"

US Admiral Philip Davidson, recently nominated to head US Pacific Command, said China could

use its "forward operating bases" in the South China Sea to challenge the US regional presence

and "would easily overwhelm the military forces of any other South China Sea claimants".

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana W. White said that the United States has asked China to investigate these incidents.

She said the Pentagon was confident that Chinese nationals were responsible.

She said there had been more than 2 but fewer than 10 such incidents.

and these attacks have increased in frequency in recent weeks.

Trump says date and location set for historic U.S.-N. Korea summit - Duration: 0:44.

U.S. President Donald Trump says the date and location have been set for his historic

summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, but he has still not said when and where the

meeting will take place.

President Trump was speaking Friday in Washington.

The U.S. leader has previously expressed a preference for holding the summit in the demilitarized

zone at the so-called truce village of Panmunjom -- the place where the inter-Korean summit

took place less than ten days ago -- though he has also mentioned Singapore.

The White House, meanwhile, has announced that Trump will host his South Korean counterpart,

President Moon Jae-in, at the White House on May 22nd... before the North Korea summit.

It said they will "continue their close coordination on developments regarding the Korean Peninsula."

US Scientists Flee To France To 'Make Our Planet Great Again' - Duration: 6:03.

MACRON CONTINUES TO

STRIVE TO MAKE OUR PLANET GREAT AGAIN.

AND SCIENTISTS ARE

FLEEING TO FRANCE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

6 OF THE 14 SCIENTISTS

ELECTED FROM MACRON'S INITIATIVE ARE FROM THE US AND

WILL EACH RECEIVE AT LEAST $600,000 TO RESEARCH VARIOUS

DIFFERENCE CLIMATE PROJECTS.

YOU CAN TAKE A LOOK HERE I MACRON SPEAKING ABOUT THE

INITIATIVE AND MAYBE SOME REASON AS TO WHY DECIDED TO LAUNCH IT.

I CALLED THEM, COME AND WORK HERE WITH US.

I REAFFIRM

CLEARLY THAT THE FIRST AGREEMENT REMAINS IRREVERSIBLE AND WILL BE

IMPLEMENTED.

NOT JUST BY FRANCE, BUT BY ALL OF THE OTHER NATIONS.

WE WILL SUCCEED.

BECAUSE WE ARE FULLY COMMITTED.

BECAUSE

WHEREVER WE LIVE, WHOEVER WE ARE, WE ALL SHARE THE SAME

RESPONSIBILITY.

MAKE OUR PLANET GREAT AGAIN.

THAT IS A BROADSIDE AT TRUMP.

I THINK IT HAS A LOT TO DO WITH TRUMP PULLING OUT OF THE

PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENTS AND THAT CHEEKY NAME MAKES IT PRETTY

OBVIOUS THAT HE IS RESPONDING HERE TO POLICIES THAT HE

DISAGREES WITH.

I SHOULD SAY THAT THIS WAS LAUNCHED BACK IN

DECEMBER AND THERE WERE 18 SCIENTISTS ELECTED THEN, 13 OF

THOSE SCIENTISTS WERE ALSO AMERICAN SO THIS I THINK IS

GREAT IN THAT WE HAVE COUNTRIES THAT ARE SUPPORTING CLIMATE

RESEARCH AND ARE LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE TO PROTECT OUR

PLANET, BUT I AM REALLY SAD TO SAY THAT I THINK FOR THE US IT

MEANS WE ARE EXPERIENCING A BRAIN DRAIN.

WE HAVE SCIENTISTS

WHO NO LONGER ABLE TO EASILY GET GRANTS AND FUNDING FOR THEIR

RESEARCH.

THEY ARE NOT BEING BACKED BY CURRENT POLICIES IN

THE GOVERNMENT AND THERE ARE OTHER POLICIES THAT ARE ALSO

KEEPING PEOPLE FROM DOING RESEARCH HERE IN THE US.

THERE

IS A LOT OF IMMIGRATION POLICIES THAT REQUIRE THAT AFTER PEOPLE

GET A GREAT AMERICAN EDUCATION HERE AT SOME OF OUR TOP

UNIVERSITIES, THEY ARE THEN ASKED TO GO BACK TO THEIR HOME

COUNTRIES AND NOT ALLOWED TO STAY AND GIVE BACK ONCE THEY

HAVE COMPLETED THEIR DEGREE, SO IT IS GREAT THAT IT IS

HAPPENING SOMEWHERE AND I AM HAPPY IT IS HAPPENING IN FRANCE.

I WISH IT WERE HAPPENING HERE HOME AS WELL.

IT IS GREAT THAT IT IS HAPPENING SOMEWHERE AND IT IS

GREAT THAT HE IS UNDERSCORING THE WAY HE IS THAT IT IS NOT

HAPPENING HERE.

HE IS ADDRESSING AN AMERICAN AUDIENCE.

I THINK IN PART HE IS SPEAKING ENGLISH AND BY THE WAY, I ALWAYS

THOUGHT THE BRITISH ACCENT WAS THE BEST WAY TO SPEAK ENGLISH,

BUT NOW I THINK THAT FRENCH ACCENT HISTORY POWERFUL 2.

HE

IS QUITE COMPELLING IN HIS REMARKS.

OF COURSE, YOU ARE

RIGHT.

THERE IS A BRAIN DRAIN.

MORE AND MORE SCIENTISTS ARE

FINDING THERE IS NO FEDERAL FUNDING HERE.

THEY'RE HAVING TO

GO OVERSEAS.

YOU SAW A BUNCH OF SCIENTISTS LEAD THE EPA.

YOU HAVE SEEN SCIENTISTS LEAD THE CDC.

THESE ARE ORGANIZATIONS THAT AREN'T SUPPORTING

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ANY LONGER SO SCIENTISTS AND MINDS THAT ARE

ASSOCIATED WITH SO MUCH RESEARCH OR HAVING TO GO ELSEWHERE.

YEAH, IT IS ALSO, I WANT TO HIT THE POINT.

IT IS OUR

IMMIGRATION POLICIES THAT ARE PREVENTING PEOPLE WHO ARE

TRAINED IN OTHER COUNTRIES WHO BEFORE USED TO COME HERE AND BE

PART OF THE RESEARCH AROUND CLIMATE CHANGE, IN THE SCIENCES

AS WELL.

TO BE HONEST, THERE ARE A LOT OF FOLKS OUTSIDE OF

THIS COUNTRY WHO ARE TRAINED AROUND THE SCIENTISTS MUCH

BETTER THAN WE ARE BECAUSE THERE IS SUBSTANTIAL GOVERNMENT

FUNDING SO THERE IS THAT ALSO.

IT IS NOT JUST THE IMPULSE TO GO

TO ANOTHER COUNTRY, BUT WHO IS COMING INTO OUR COUNTRY AS WELL.

WE ARE BANNING THAT AND OF COURSE THERE IS THE MUSLIM

BANDAS WELL, THE GREAT PREVENTATIVE AROUND THAT.

I

LOVE TO HEAR THIS FROM FRANCE, EXCEPT, WELL YOU GOT A LIE.

HE

SAYS FRANCE HAS ALWAYS LED FIGHTS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

CLUSTER AT THE SAME TIME YOU ARE COLONIZING WEST AFRICA.

PLEASE, JUST TELLS WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

DON'T HAD ON THAT LAYER OF PATRIOTISM WHICH IS

UNNECESSARY BECAUSE THE FRENCH ARE REALLY OBSESSED WITH

BEING CULTURAL HEROES.

MAYBE HE FEELS LIKE A, I AM SPENDING MORE THAN HALF 1

MILLION PER RESEARCHER HERE.

I CAN THROW IN SOME MARKETING FOR MY COUNTRY.

YEAH, BUT THERE IS ALSO PROBABLY OMISSIONS ISSUES THAT

THEY HAS TO DEAL WITH INTERNALLY.

THIS IS A WHOLE

TYPE OF CONVERSATION AND I AM NOT CRAZY ABOUT MAKE OUR PLANET

GREAT AGAIN EITHER BECAUSE FIRST OF ALL, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN

WAS A LINE THAT STRANGELY ENOUGH CAME FROM A KNOCK TODAY VIA

LETTER NOVEL AND WAS THE SLOGAN FOR A FASCIST LEADER.

RONALD REAGAN USED IT FIRST TO DUCK.

THAT IS RIGHT.

SHE DID TAKE IT FROM THAT.

BUT YEAH, YOUR POINT IS WELL TAKEN.

I THOUGHT HE WAS SKEWERING TRUMP WITHOUT LINE.

THAT WAS THE REASON HE USED IT.

I THINK SLOGANS LIKE MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, MAKE OUR

PLANET GREAT AGAIN, THEY GATHER DIFFERENT ITERATIONS AND HAVE

DIFFERENT MEANINGS.

WE NEED TO PUT THEM IN CONTEXT.

I THINK

WHAT IS IMPORTANT ABOUT HERE IS THAT HE IS TAKING A SLOGAN THAT

MEANS ALMOST EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF ITS ORIGINAL MEANING

AND RE-APPROPRIATING AIDING IS SAYING, LET'S NOT FOCUS ON

WHO WE ARE AS A COUNTRY AND BE BLINDED TO THE REST OF THE

WORLD, BUT TAKE A MORE HOLISTIC APPROACH TO POLICY AND

THINK ABOUT OUR FELLOW HUMAN BEING, NOT JUST OUR FELLOW

CITIZENS.

Pompeo faces immediate challenge to fill key State Department positions - Duration: 3:56.

>> Sreenivasan: SECRETARY OF

STATE MIKE POMPEO HAS MANY JOBS

TO FILL.

THE STATE DEPARTMENT IS STILL

MISSING KEY OFFICIALS, INCLUDING

AMBASSADORS TO NATIONS LIKE

TURKEY AND SAUDI ARABIA.

AND THERE IS CONCERN THAT IT IS

DIFFICULT TO FIND CANDIDATES WHO

ARE BOTH EXPERIENCED AND

ACCEPTABLE TO THE WHITE HOUSE.

POLITICO REPORTER NAHAL TOOSI

HAS BEEN COVERING THIS STORY AND

JOINS US FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.

LET'S FIRST TALK ABOUT THE

NUMBER OF JOBS.

PUT THIS IN PERSPECTIVE FOR US.

HOW MUCH WORK DOES MIKE POMPEO

HAVE AHEAD OF HIM?

>> WELL, THERE'S MORE THAN 70

POSITIONS THAT DON'T HAVE A

NOMINEE AND MANY OF THOSE ARE

AMBASSADORSHIPS, BUT THEY ALSO

INCLUDE UNDERSECRETARIES,

ASSISTANT SECRETARIES OF STATE.

THESE ARE VERY HIGH-LEVEL

LEADERSHIP POSITIONS.

THERE ARE SEVERAL POSITIONS THAT

HAVE NOMINEES, BUT THEY HAVEN'T

BEEN CONFIRMED YET.

>> Sreenivasan: AND WHAT'S THE

TENSION AT THE WHITE HOUSE?

WHAT'S THE SORT OF ACCEPTABILITY

BAR?

>> WELL, ONE OF THE KEY THINGS

IS THAT IF ANY... SO, IF ANYONE

WHO WAS ON A SIGNER OF THE

"NEVER TRUMP" LETTERS-- THESE

WERE MANY REPUBLICAN NATIONAL

SECURITY AND FOREIGN POLICY

EXPERTS-- THEY BASICALLY HAVE

BEEN BLACKLISTED BY THIS WHITE

HOUSE.

IF ANYONE HAS EVER SAID ANYTHING

BAD OR CRITICAL ABOUT THE

PRESIDENT, HE DOESN'T WANT THEM

IN ANY OF THESE POSITIONS AT THE

STATE DEPARTMENT.

THERE'S A VERY HIGH LOYALTY

TEST.

SO, IT'S MEANT THAT THE BENCH IS

A LOT SLIMMER THAN IT WOULD HAVE

BEEN IN PAST ADMINISTRATIONS.

>> Sreenivasan: SO, WOULD MIKE

POMPEO HAVE ANY BETTER CHANCE OF

GETTING A "NEVER TRUMPER"

THROUGH THAN REX TILLERSON DID?

>> I WOULDN'T SAY HE HAS A GOOD

CHANCE RIGHT NOW, BUT OVER TIME

HE MIGHT HAVE A BETTER CHANCE.

AND THE REASON FOR THAT IS, HE

HAS A PRETTY GOOD RELATIONSHIP

WITH THE PRESIDENT, AND HE MIGHT

BE ABLE TO CONVINCE THE

PRESIDENT THAT, LOOK, SOME OF

THESE GUYS ARE REALLY EXPERTS,

AND EVEN THOUGH THEY SIGNED

THOSE LETTERS, SAY, DURING THE

CAMPAIGN, THEY WANT TO SERVE YOU

NOW.

>> Sreenivasan: WHAT ABOUT THE

CAREER DIPLOMATS AND WHERE

THEY'RE PLACED AND HOW THEY'RE

POSITIONED COMPARED TO THE

APPOINTMENTS THAT POMPEO COULD

MAKE OR THE ONES THAT DESERVE

SENATE CONFIRMATION?

>> WELL, YOU KNOW, EVERY

ADMINISTRATION HAS A CERTAIN

LEVEL OF POLITICAL APPOINTEES

AND THEN THE CAREER APPOINTEES.

IN THE PAST, PRESIDENTS HAVE...

WHEN IT COMES TO

AMBASSADORSHIPS, ABOUT 30% HAVE

GONE TO POLITICAL APPOINTEES,

AND THE OTHER 70% HAVE BEEN

DRAWN FROM CAREER DIPLOMATIC

RANKS.

BUT THE CAREER FOREIGN SERVICE

REALLY HOPES THAT POMPEO TURNS

TO THEM WHENEVER POSSIBLE TO

FILL SOME OF THESE TOP

POSITIONS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT

COMES TO POSITIONS LIKE

UNDERSECRETARY FOR POLITICAL

AFFAIRS OR THE DIRECTOR GENERAL

OF THE FOREIGN SERVICE, WHICH IS

KIND OF LIKE THE HUMAN RESOURCES

PIECE.

SO, THEY'RE HOPING THAT THIS IS

A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR POMPEO TO

SHOW THAT HE DOES CARE ABOUT THE

FOREIGN SERVICE, WHICH TILLERSON

DID NOT SEEM TO DO.

>> Sreenivasan: IT IS STILL

VERY, VERY EARLY IN HIS TENURE,

BUT ANY INDICATIONS THAT THE

CULTURE MIGHT BE DIFFERENT THAN

UNDER THE TILLERSON REGIME?

>> WELL, POMPEO SO FAR HAS GONE

OUT OF HIS WAY TO PRAISE MEMBERS

OF THE FOREIGN SERVICE AND THE

CIVIL SERVICE WHO WORK FOR HIM

AT THE STATE DEPARTMENT.

HE DID NOT BRING IN ANY OUTSIDE

AIDES OR ADVISORS, AND THAT WAS

A REALLY GOOD SIGNAL FOR A LOT

OF PEOPLE AT THE STATE

DEPARTMENT BECAUSE IT MEANT THAT

HE WAS GOING TO RELY ON THEM FOR

WHAT HE NEEDED, AT LEAST FOR

NOW.

AND THAT WAS QUITE DIFFERENT

THAN WHAT SECRETARY TILLERSON

DID BECAUSE HE CAME IN AND

LARGELY WAS SURROUNDED BY A

HANDFUL OF PEOPLE HE BROUGHT IN

FROM THE OUTSIDE, AND THEY

BASICALLY CUT OFF HIS ACCESS TO

THE FOREIGN SERVICE AND VICE

VERSA.

>> Sreenivasan: WHAT'S THE KIND

OF NET EFFECT OF ALL THESE OPEN

POSITIONS?

IS THE STATE DEPARTMENT... IT

HAS THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF

EMPLOYEES, IS IT FUNCTIONING

LESS EFFECTIVELY THAN IT COULD?

>> WHEN YOU HAVE ASSISTANT

SECRETARIES ON ISSUES LIKE HUMAN

RIGHTS OR, YOU KNOW, FOR THE

MIDDLE EAST, WHICH WE DON'T HAVE

ONE RIGHT NOW, THOSE ARE THE

GUYS WHO PARTICULARLY ARE THE

ONES WHO ARE TALKING TO FOREIGN

COUNTERPARTS, TELLING THEM, YOU

KNOW... KEEPING THEM UP TO DATE

ON WHAT'S GOING ON, KEEPING

PEOPLE IN THE LOOP.

AND, YOU KNOW, NOW THEY'RE NOT

THERE, SO THERE'S THESE, LIKE,

EMPTY POSITIONS.

AND PEOPLE OVERSEAS-- FOREIGN

LEADERS, FOREIGN DIPLOMATS--

THEY DON'T KNOW WHO TO TURN TO

AT THE STATE DEPARTMENT, AND

THEY JUST FEEL LIKE... THEY FEEL

LIKE THINGS ARE A BIT LOST.

THERE'S A BIT OF A VACUUM ON A

LOT OF LEVELS.

>> Sreenivasan: ALL RIGHT, NAHAL

TOOSI OF POLITICO, THANKS SO

MUCH FOR JOINING US.

>> THANKS FOR HAVING ME.

How ending their temporary protected status will impact Hondurans in the U.S. - Duration: 3:32.

>> Sreenivasan: THE TRUMP

ADMINISTRATION IS PHASING OUT A

SPECIAL IMMIGRATION PROGRAM,

ANNOUNCING AN END TO TEMPORARY

PROTECTED STATUS FOR 57,000

HONDURANS YESTERDAY.

THE HONDURANS WILL HAVE UNTIL

JANUARY OF 2020 TO RETURN HOME

OR REMAIN IN THE UNITED STATES

AS UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS.

MOST ARRIVED AFTER HURRICANE

MITCH STRUCK CENTRAL AMERICA IN

1999.

MANY NOW HAVE BUSINESSES,

FAMILIES AND CHILDREN WHO ARE

U.S. CITIZENS.

FOR MORE ON WHAT'S HAPPENING TO

THIS LONG-RUNNING PROGRAM AND TO

THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF

PEOPLE AFFECTED, WE TURN TO

"U.S.A. TODAY" REPORTER ALAN

GOMEZ WHO JOINS US FROM MIAMI.

SO, TO PUT THIS IN PERSPECTIVE,

THIS IS JUST THE LATEST COUNTRY

THAT'S BEEN ON THE LIST AND

ACTIONS HAVE BEEN TAKEN AGAINST

THEM.

HOW MUCH OF THE POPULATION OF

PEOPLE WITH T.P.S. DOES THIS NOW

REPRESENT?

>> YEAH, THIS REPRESENTS THE,

LIKE YOU SAID, THE LATEST STEP.

THEY'VE BEEN METHODICALLY GOING

COUNTRY BY COUNTRY, ELIMINATING

T.P.S. FOR THESE PEOPLE THAT HAD

IT.

IT'S ABOUT A TOTAL OF 317,000

PEOPLE FROM TEN DIFFERENT

COUNTRIES THAT ARE IN T.P.S.

THEY'VE NOW CUT IT FOR 98% OF

THAT POPULATION.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT WAS EL

SALVADOR; THEY HAD 197,000

PEOPLE WHO HAD T.P.S

ABOUT 46,000 HAITIANS, THESE

57,000 HONDURANS.

AND, YEAH, SO THEY'RE PRETTY

MUCH WINDING DOWN THE ENTIRE

PROGRAM.

>> Sreenivasan: WHAT ABOUT THE

CHILDREN THAT ARE U.S. CITIZENS

HERE?

WHAT KINDS OF RIPPLE EFFECTS IN

TERMS OF POPULATION ARE WE

SEEING?

YOU SAID 317,000 HAD THE T.P.S.

PROTECTIONS, BUT NOW THERE ARE

ENTIRE FAMILIES WITH SOME OF

THOSE PEOPLE.

>> YEAH, AND THAT'S ONE OF THE

MOST AGONIZING PARTS OF THIS FOR

THE PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO BE

FACED WITH THIS DECISION.

THERE'S ABOUT 197,000 EL

SALVADORANS WHO ARE IN THE

PROGRRAM; THEY'VE HAD 190,000

U.S.-BORN CHILDREN, SO THEY'RE

CITIZENS.

SAME WITH HONDURANS.

ABOUT 57,000 OF THOSE ARE IN THE

PROGRAM; THEY'VE HAD ABOUT

53,000 CHILDREN IN THE UNITED

STATES.

AND SO, EACH OF THEM ARE GOING

TO HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION--

DO I GO BACK TO MY HOME COUNTRY

THAT IS GRIPPED BY VIOLENCE AND

TAKE MY SON OR DAUGHTER WHO MAY

OR MAY NOT HAVE EVER GONE TO

THAT COUNTRY AND MAY OR MAY NOT

SPEAK SPANISH?

OR DO I LEAVE, GO BACK AND LEAVE

MY CHILD BEHIND IN THE UNITED

STATES?

OR DO I STAY IN THE UNITED

STATES, BECOME AN UNDOCUMENTED

IMMIGRANT, RISK DEPORTATION AND

KIND OF PUT MY FAMILY THROUGH

THAT STRESS?

>> Sreenivasan: WELL, SPEAKING

OF THE CONDITIONS IN THOSE

COUNTRIES THAT THEY'RE GOING

BACK TO, WE SAW A LOT OF

HEADLINES OVER THE PAST COUPLE

OF WEEKS ABOUT THE CARAVAN THAT

HAS BEEN MOVING NORTH AND IS NOW

STALLED AT THE BORDER.

THESE ARE PEOPLE THAT ARE

SEEKING ASYLUM FROM SOME OF

THESE COUNTRIES BECAUSE IT'S NOT

SAFE FOR THEM TO BE ALIVE.

>> YEAH, AND IT'S ANOTHER REALLY

DIFFICULT PART OF THIS.

I MEAN, EL SALVADOR... LIKE,

HONDURAS, IT WAS ORIGINALLY

GRANTED T.P.S. BECAUSE OF

HURRICANE MITCH.

BUT IN THE ENSUING TWO DECADES,

THAT COUNTRY HAS BEEN BESIEGED

BY DRUG CARTEL VIOLENCE, BY GANG

VIOLENCE.

IT RANKS AS ONE OF THE MOST

DANGEROUS IN THE WORLD.

EL SALVADOR HAS THE HIGHEST

MURDER RATE OR HAD IT AT LEAST A

COUPLE OF YEARS AGO.

STILL INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT

PLACE.

THE U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT HAS

TRAVEL WARNINGS IN PLACE FOR

THOSE TWO COUNTRIES BECAUSE OF

HOW DANGEROUS, BECAUSE OF THE

RISK OF KIDNAPPINGS, OF

EXTORTION, OF THINGS LIKE THAT.

AND SO, YEAH, NOW WE'RE EXPECTED

TO SEND BACK TENS OF THOUSANDS

OF PEOPLE TO THOSE COUNTRIES AT

A TIME WHEN THINGS ARE SO BAD

THAT PEOPLE ARE FLEEING THOSE

COUNTRIES TO TRY TO COME TO THE

UNITED STATES TO... TO CLAIM

ASYLUM.

SO, THAT SORT OF... IT JUST

SHOWS JUST HOW COMPLICATED A

DECISION, HOW TOUGH THAT

DECISION IS GOING TO BE FOR

THESE FOLKS.

>> Sreenivasan: ALL RIGHT, ALAN

GOMEZ OF "U.S.A. TODAY" JOINING

US FROM MIAMI, THANKS SO MUCH.

>> THANK YOU.

US lashes out at China over 'THREATENING' letters - 'It is ORWELLIAN nonsense!' - DAILY NEWS - Duration: 3:40.

US lashes out at China over 'THREATENING' letters - 'It is ORWELLIAN nonsense!'

CHINA has been blasted over claims of "threatening and coercing" US naval carriers and their

operatives as tensions between the two power countries continues to escalate.

The White House issued a statement slamming a letter the Chinese Civil Aviation Administration

was understood to have sent to the US and 36 foreign air carriers and demanding a number

of changes to them are made.

The carriers were ordered to remove references on websites or in other material that suggests

Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau are part of countries independent from China, according to US officials.

Taiwan is China's most sensitive territorial issue, with China considering the self-ruled,

democratic island a loose cannon in terms of its providence with former European colonies

Hong Kong and Macau now part of China but running separately.

The Pentagon said in the statement: "The United States strongly objects to China's

attempts to compel private firms to use specific language of a political nature in their publicly

available content.

"We call on China to stop threatening and coercing American carriers and citizens.

They added US President Donald Trump "will stand up for Americans resisting efforts by

the Chinese Communist Party to impose Chinese political correctness on American companies

and citizens", before dubbing the situation "Orwellian nonsense".

A spokesman for Airlines for America, a trade group representing United Airlines, American

Airlines and other major carriers, confirmed they had received the demand

They added: "We are continuing to work with U.S. government officials as we determine

next steps."

The spat comes in the wake of a separate row that saw the US heavily criticising China

over accusations they blasted American pilots with lasers in a sinister campaign of harassment.

On Friday, Pentagon officials slapped the Chinese with a formal complaint, demanding

Beijing stamp out supposed military-grade laser attacks on US forces in the skies above

Djibouti.

The allegations, including a claim that two pilots suffered eye injuries in one attack

over the east African base, triggered swift denials with China's defence ministry which

said the States have been "in complete contradiction of the facts".

The military argument between the two powerful countries is one of the most significant outside

the South China Sea and the most serious in Africa and centres around Djibouti allowing

China to build its first military base within 18 miles of Camp Lemonnier.

The Camp is home to 4,000 US military personnel and the headquarters of US Africa Command

in a move that infuriated the US, sparking fears from Washington that the Chinese were

conjuring plans to escalate surveillance operations of US counterterrorism operations in Somalia

and Yemen.

But these fears were ignored by China when they invested a massive £1billion to upgrade

Djibouti's ports and airport.

Mr Trump recently tweeted to his 51.5million followers: "It is hard for China in that

they have become very spoiled with US trade wins!"

In January, China demanded an apology from major American airline Delta for listing Taiwan

and Tibet as countries on its website.
