Funny jokes.
I know...
I got cancer as soon as I said it...
It was bad.
CRINGE. CRINGE.
Don't think that I am saying it only to make it program more funny...
No, no....
It can't be like this...
YES! I've been waiting for you to stop recording.
Be like BRANDON WOELFEL
We're back after short break from videos made in our studio.
By the way, we are glad
that you liked all the episodes where
we made interviews with people from movie industry.
But today, we have a little experiment for you.
We are going to check if some things connected with photography
are going to work in the videos.
There is a photographer whose name is Brandon Woelfel.
I hope my pronunciation is good.
He became famous on the Instagram.
Now he has over 1,5 milion followers.
Who are watching him on this platform.
His photos are popular and uniqie enought
that you could see his work somewhere else.
He works, for example, with this kind of LED lights
He uses prisms and CDs
When he started taking photos
few years ago
It was definetely something unique.
We thought that
It would be interesting thing to check
If this technique works also with the video footage.
Ofcourse, we were aware that it's imposible to make it exactly the same
Just because the photos are saved in RAW format
And it has much more informations about colors
Than when we use DSLR
But we took the challenge and decided to make an experiment.
So we checked how Brandon Woelfel
and his unique style are going to work with videos.
In few last weeks
When we were publishing interviews on our YouTube channel
We were collecting all the stuff
that could be useful on the set
I have a feeling that this episode
was the most expensive thing we did, because of all thing we needed to buy.
What we needed was:
these LED lights
It was one of these few things I had at home
But the most expensive things were...
All those prisms and crystals
They are splitting the light
And give this unique rainbow effect
This pyramid was bought on Allegro (*it's Polish eBay)
I guess it's just a funny decoration
It was an educational toy for kids
This prism was made to teach how the light works with this kind of crystals
And how to use it in science
I also found some part of a chandelier
I bought this in the shop with lamps and other light sources
Also on Allegro
Finally...
there was a kaleidoscope from toy shop.
We were surprised how cool effects it made
It costs about...
8 zlotys (*about 3 dollars)
So it was pretty cheap
Aaaand... CDs!
One of 'em was just a common CD
And the second one with erased overlay.
I will show you how to erase the overlay in quick and easy tutorial.
This transparent CD is far more useful
when you want to reflect the light with it
and get this unique rainbow.
Do it with Bartek!
DUCT TAPE PLEASE!
So... the only thing we need to do is...
to find good duct tape.
stick it to the CD
I mean the upper side
And cross the fingers for this magic trick.
HA! It's not working.
But I know why.
When I prepaired the other CD, I made a little cut on the overlay.
So...
Just cut this silver overlay and the trick with duct tape will work.
Wait. I will do it again.
I am doing the cut...
I stick it...
Stick the duct tape...
Came out the first time!
We also made some footage at night
So we wanted to use some sparkles.
But I got this information in the shop
That it's forbidden to sell sparkles when it's not New Year's Eve.
So we used those little birthday cake sparkles.
Don't know where is the difference but whatever.
They worked very similar to those New Year's sparkles.
We also gave the glasses to our models
Because it's very popular element of
Brandon's most popular photos.
Glasses are reflecting the light
so it's another light additive.
And... I guess this is it.
But if You are planning to make some Brandon-style footage
You can use all kind of
Lenses, prisms, binocular parts,
glasses from the old watches,
All those things can be useful to make this unique effect
and have some fun with the light.
This is how Brandon Woelfel is making his magic.
Waffle?
It's all about using
the sources of light you find on the location.
We didn't use any kind of lamps and LED panels.
Ofcourse, I don't count neon lights.
Or this little LED lights for christmas tree.
Those were only making light effects.
We were filming in 4 different places
and in 4 different parts of the day.
We started in the afternoon
and those were the shoots we made inside the house.
Later, we moved to the street
and found the shop exposition with neon lights.
It was at the beginning of "magic hour".
When we came to the third location it was already dark outside.
But we were filming inside.
Very important part of this place were also neon lights.
And the last footage was recorded at night
It was the only place, where we used
Those birthday cake sparles.
When we don't count the last example...
This characteristic look is acheived
because of filming before it's fully dark outside.
The darker parts of the picture
have to be still rich in details
Comparing to Brandon, we were in lost position.
It's because of the rich RAW file format in photos.
DSLR still shots are easier to retouch.
RAW files have more informations about colours than movie files.
In Lumix GH-4 we had only 8-bit colour data.
So it was a bit tricky
to copy the style of the photos.
Talking about the gear...
As far as I know, Brandon Woelfel's camera
is Nikon D750
He also uses prime lenses between 50 and 80mm.
In our case we used:
Panasonic Lumix GH-4
And Voigtlander lense 25mm
Because of the crop factor it's exactly like a portrait lense
when we compare it to the full-frame cameras.
When you try to acheive Brandon style
It's worth to remember
about shallow depth of field
which comes with wide open aperture.
It makes all the lights
Even which accidentally appeared in the background
will give another blur effect.
It's worth to remember about
whole retouch process after we make the footage.
In case of Branton it's
Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom
By the way, there is a comparison of "before" and "after" on his website.
This is great example of
how much more you have to do in postproduction
to acheive certain effect.
In our case, the only retouch
was made in Lumetri Color
the tool from Adobe Premiere.
I guess this is all
when it comes to arrangemets before the shots
We did it the first time
and we treated it like an experiment.
We didn't have expensive camera
so there was a chance
that we won't acheive Brandon Woelfel's effect.
But not holding you any longer in uncertainty
Please watch what we recorded
When it comes to filming through prisms and crystals
I don't think we have any good advice gere
Put the prism in front of your lense
and catch all the colours, reflects and distorsions
untill you are satisfied with the effects
After few first shoots
we saw it all works suprisingly good
so to complete the mission, we just had to came back home and make some postproduction.
Brandon uses a lot of Photoshop and Lightroom
so we were prepaired for long hours of working with colours.
Strangely enough, it was easier than we expected.
It wasn't very complicated.
We were afraid that hardcore coloring
Will hurt the picture and highlitht the noise
Fortunately, GH-4 and Voigtlander did a fine job.
We were filming in flat colour profile: Cine-D.
V-LOG-L isn't the best option when it comes to 8-bit colours recording.
First thing we did in Adobe Premiere Lumetri Colors
was contrast enhancement.
We also set proper levels.
It was actually trial and error method
We were just looking for the picture that is similar to Brandon works.
Then, we used the effect called "faded film".
Depending on the shot, we also used Color Wheels
to make the shadows colder and make highlights more pink.
And now, very important question:
Why the hell we did this episode?
First of all, it was an attempt to check
If things from the world of photography
are going to work in the video world.
But there is something more important
In the world of digital effects
That we do with plugins and montage tricks
It's really cool to acheive something like this
When you do everything in analogue way
It's all just about having fun with things
That weren't actually made for this usage.
It's fun to make a rainbow on the frame with the transparent CD or pyramid prism.
I think we acheive very cool effects.
What is very funny
All those expensive crystals and prisms
were worse than
ordinary CD
and cheap, pink kaleidoscope.
The other think that came to my mind after shooting
was the figure of Brandon who inspired us to make this episode.
He started to take photos in the age of 19.
And since, I guess, 5 years
his photos are looking very similar
I think it's good question to ask to yourself:
When you enter into some aesthetics and choose some kind of style
Isn't it some kind of trap?
The trap of characteristic style.
I think that after 5 years of creating very similar photos
It's worth to think about
something new.
Oh, and one more thing!
The usage of this kind of effects in videos.
We did some kind of tutorial
but it's obvious that
It should be useful on some other fields.
I think that this kind of effects
With a lot of rainbows, colours and fissions
Will look very good
In fashion show-reeels
Maybe in some kind of music videos?
I am not sure if this kind of shoots will work in movies.
This is the question I am asking you.
If we somehow inspired you to make your own videos in this style
and try to film with prisms
Please share your work with us

It's a great reason to discuss.
It's all for today. See you in next episodes of "KREC ISIE".
