Then we have our bed to go to sleep and that's pretty much what we did today there will also be more work done

It's going to be a lot more on the kitchen in the bathrooms

And there's gonna be a lot of redstone work the next episode

we're going to advance this house a lot more than it already is and

Hi friends, this is Lenwë, I hope you're fine.

Welcome to Ask a Geek!

First of all, I want to thank you for all your comments and your sharings of the first

episode, I'm so happy!

I also thank you for all the interesting questions you

asked me.

Besides, I just created a Facebook page for the show, "Ask a Geek" so

Before going into the heart of the matter, I will answer Arkthus' question

about the video on smartphone:

"When filming with a phone, is there the possibility to record the video on

another storage on the fly (basically without having to copy the video after having shot it)?"

Well there are indeed special USB keys for smartphone with two tips, one for

your smartphone and one for your PC on which you can then copy all your photos and

videos to free up space.

Some are even provided with a special application that allows you to record

video directly on the USB key.

Unfortunately, the user feedback is rather negative, there are a lot of performance issues

and most importantly you can not use your usual video application.

Anyway the best solution is to allocate a few GB on your smartphone

for your photos and videos and then copy them on a USB key or a PC to free up

space as soon as you have the opportunity.

I have also received many other questions but as they are much more complex,

they will be the subject of a future episode.

Contrary to popular beliefs, mounting your PC is within everyone's reach.

In fact, it's not even more complicated than a furniture kit from Ikea.

Even if resellers offer building services at affordable prices, it is

always more interesting to build your PC by yourself to understand how it works,

how to upgrade it and even how to fix it in case of problems. 33 00:01:43,521 --> 00:01:45,990 Anyway you have very little risk of damaging anything even by making

mistakes because the components are designed specifically for that.

In this tutorial, we will build a low cost gaming configuration with brand new components

and used ones.

Before proceeding with building, let us first make a quick presentation of the different

components of our future PC.

The central processing unit or CPU is the central component that performs all the main operations

of the PC.

It can have several cores which makes it possible to process several calculations simultaneously

and thus to increase performance.

For a gaming PC, it is recommended to have at least 4 cores.

For our setup, we chose an Intel Core i5 processor, equipped with 4

cores, which offers good performance for an affordable price.

The processor heats a lot, that's why it comes with a cooler (a

radiator with a fan) for cooling.

The RAM is the memory that is available to the PC to run the

applications.

The more RAM you have, the more you can open large applications and the more you can open simultaneously.

It comes in the form of stick modules.

In our case, we have chosen 2 4GB DDR 4 modules for a total of 8GB,

which is the recommended minimum for games.

The graphics card is the component dedicated to video processing such as 3D.

It is actually a whole computer with its own processor, the GPU,

with its cooling system and its own RAM.

It is the component most solicited by video games.

For our PC, we recovered an ATI Radeon HD 6850 from an old build.

It can always be replaced later by a more recent model such as

the NVIDIA GTX 1060 if the performance is insufficient.

The motherboard is the main component that will host the CPU, RAM, graphics card

and possibly other additional cards.

It is therefore important to choose a motherboard adapted to the model of the CPU

and the type of RAM.

Depending on the model, the motherboards have certain built-in features

such as sound, networking or even an integrated graphics circuit.

There are different sizes and some can even accommodate multiple graphics cards

to boost gaming performance.

Our motherboard is an entry level model from MSI with a single

graphics card slot, which is more than enough for most players.

For storage of large files such as videos, photos, music and

some video games, we will install a large hard drive of 1 TB.

The problem with hard drives is that they are very slow and thus slow down the PC.

which is very fast because it has no mechanical parts, to install the operating system and

software.

To power all these components, we have a power supply of 550W.

It is important to choose a power supply of sufficient power for

your graphics card, which consumes a lot.

Check the manufacturer's website for the minimum required power.

As an indication, with 550W, you can easily power a GTX 1080.

Avoid low-end power supplies at all costs because a poor quality one

may damage your components, for example in case of mains voltage variation

or high demand from your PC.

It is therefore better to pay a few tens of bucks more for a good PSU rather than

losing several hundreds because of a bad one.

Finally, we need to choose a case to put all that in.

The important thing is that your case is well ventilated and big enough to accommodate

all your components.

It must be adapted to the dimensions of your motherboard but also to those of your

graphics card because some are very bulky and do not fit in some cases.

Our case comes from an old PC, which gives it a cool vintage looking.

However, modern cases are generally better designed because they offer better

ventilation and make the PC easier to build.

Our case is fitted with a DVD drive and a floppy disk drive.

They are of course too old to be used in our setup so

not to leave these empty slots, we will replace them with a

SATA DVD burner and a USB memory card reader.

Now that we have everything we need, let's start building!

Let's start by removing the side panel and the front of the case.

Let's install the power supply.

The old drives are then removed and replaced with the new DVD drive

and card reader, making sure they are locked in place.

Let's put the back plate of the motherboard then install the motherboard.

For the next steps, the connections depends on the model of your motherboard.

Check the manual that is provided in the box to find the location of each

connector you will need.

The motherboard is powered by 2 connectors, which can be divided into 2 parts.

The buttons, LEDs, audio jacks plugs and USB ports of the front panel

are then connected to the motherboard.

Refer to the manual of your motherboard as well as to the labels on the connectors

to not be mistaken.

Most connectors are keyed so they can not be plugged

in the wrong way.

If it does not fit, do not force, it means that you're doing the wrong way!

Let's now install the hard drive and the SSD.

The hard drive is 3.5" but the SSD is much smaller, 2.5" format.

An adapter must be used to install the SSD in a 3.5" rack.

The disk drives are powered by a special connector and connected to the

motherboard by a SATA connector.

Motherboards typically have "high-speed" SATA connectors in 6 GBits/s.

Locate them in the manual and connect the SSD and the hard drive

to these connectors for better performance.

Optical drives and secondary hard drives, if you have some, can be

connected to standard SATA ports.

We can now install the processor.

The processors are delivered in a box containing the processor and a cooler.

Be careful not to touch the thermal paste that is deposited on the cooler, not only

that it may decrease performance but also it stains and it's a pain in the ass

to clean.

The cooler supplied with the processor does its job but it is better to replace it

with a more efficient cooler which will prolong the life of your processor and

which will be much less noisy.

There are also water cooling systems, which are even

more efficient but much more complicated to install.

Reserved for experienced people.

Before installing the CPU, remove the protective cover then unlock the lever.

Locate the markings on the corners of the CPU and the socket.

Place the CPU on the socket without forcing by aligning the 2 marks then lock it

using the lever.

Clip the cooler over the CPU and plug it in.

We will now install the RAM sticks.

Motherboards usually have 2 or 3 memory banks, 2 slots

each.

For optimal performance, it is advisable to install the same amount of RAM in

each bank and use sticks of the same speed.

Check the manual of your motherboard to locate each one of the banks.

Here we have 2 banks of 2 slots each and 2 sticks of 4 GB.

Let's insert 1 stick in the first location of each bank.

The sticks have a notch in the middle which avoids them being inserting in the wrong

way.

Spread out the plastic notches and insert the stick until it clicks.

All we have to do now is to install the graphics card.

Remove the cover(s) at the back located by the PCIe slot.

Insert the graphics card into its slot and make sure it is secured.

Do not hesitate to tighten it securely to the case using a screw to prevent the slot

from breaking under its own weight.

Locate the 6-pin or 8-pin power connector(s) on the

graphics card the connect it to the power supply.

Arrange the cables inside your machine well to improve ventilation.

Tighten them with zip ties or Velcro straps.

Newer cases offer the ability to run cables underneath

the motherboard to maximize space.

The build is now complete.

Check that everything is plugged in and your PC is ready for the first start!

If everything goes well, the computer should start and you can access Setup

by pressing the indicated key.

If your computer does not start, the screen stays black or if it beeps repeatedly,

do not panic, it means that a component is not properly installed.

Check that the RAM sticks are properly inserted and at the correct locations and

that all power connectors are plugged in.

Once in Setup, set the time, date, and boot order for the different

drives.

If you plan to install your operating system from a USB drive or a DVD, set

the appropriate drive first in the boot order.

You should not have any other setting to do.

All you need to do now is to reboot then install the operating system on your SSD.

Once the operating system is up and running, you can return to

Setup to set your SSD as the first boot disk to reduce

the startup time.

If you do not notice any malfunction, you can now close your case,

install drivers for your hardware and your favorite games and software!

I have always felt that we were mistreated as Japanese Americans and that our cause has

not been known to the people in the United States.

The government took advantage of us.

They put us in camps.

They never compensated us and then told us to leave the camp and "go back to where you

came from" and gave you travel expenses, and that's it.

I says, "This is mistreatment of the citizens of this country, and yet we volunteered to

serve in the army.

We served in Europe, and I don't know what to tell you, but if it weren't for the 100th

and 442nd, I think we might've lost the war in Europe.

And as far as the Japanese Americans in the Pacific side, if you didn't have them, according

to statements by the government, it would've cost you more time and money to have won,

if you would've won."

I says, we were mistreated, and I think that the government should know about it.

We should let the citizens know about it.

The only way we can do it is ourselves.

We have to build a museum somewhere where people can see what happened and tell people

what we're all about.

And we're still lacking money.

We're lacking recognition, and we haven't received anything from the government.

I says we have to let the public know, and the only way I can think of is to start a

museum, start a public place where we can teach people as to what happened to us.

Nobody else is gonna do it for us.

We have to do it ourselves.

Stranger Things 2 and Aliens: How to Build a Bigger World | NowThis Nerd - Duration: 9:20.

Hey guys, I'm Mike and I definitely did not envy the Duffer Brothers during the buildup to 'Stranger Things 2.'

Can you imagine the pressure to make a satisfying follow-up to such a beloved hit?

I mean, it was my favorite show of 2016. Anyway,

Fortunately, they avoided the sophomore slump by taking a lesson from one of the greatest sequels ever: 'Aliens.'

James Cameron built on the success of Ridley Scott's 'Alien' by changing everything from the scale of the story to the genre of the movie,

And The Duffers used the same lessons to up the ante with 'Stranger Things 2.'

So let's take a closer, SPOILER filled look at

How 'Aliens' Helped 'Stranger Things' Build a Bigger World.

Starting with

More Monsters

The first 'Alien' was just one xenomorph against a crew of terrified space truckers,

similar to how our 'Stranger Things' heroes had their hands full with a single Demogorgon.

Cameron needed to raise the stakes for 'Aliens,' so he dreamed up an army of swarming xenomorphs to raise hell on LV-426,

They're coming outta the goddamn walls!

just like how the Duffers unleashed packs of snarling Demo-dogs on the town of Hawkins.

Increasing the monster count allows for a lot more action,

and keeps the sequel from treading too much familiar ground,

but it does come at a cost.

Part of the mystique of the original xenomorph was how seemingly unstoppable it was.

Ripley couldn't even kill it directly, she just had to stay alive long enough to blast it out of an airlock.

But the xenomorphs got nerfed hard in 'Aliens.'

They certainly get their fill of space marines, but drones are exploding left and right in this movie,

and the acid blood only seems to matter when the script remembers it.

In the first season of 'Stranger Things,' the Demogorgon was an unkillable menace.

I mean, it took three teens and a house full of traps to slightly wound it.

But the new Demo-dogs aren't too much of a problem, at least if you're a main character.

I mean Steve is smashing their heads like he's Gallagher,

and in the climactic scene Hopper just blows them away.

They're still effective, but they're not quite as scary as a single slimy Demogorgon played by a man in a rubber suit.

Speaking of which, special effects can also suffer when things get bigger.

H.R. Giger created a meticulously detailed suit for his Xenomorph,

and Ridley Scott hid it away in darkness to let your imagination fill in the terrifying details.

But there were too many xenos in 'Aliens' to get that kind of treatment,

so Cameron mostly used performers in black spandex with alien armor glued on.

In 'Stranger Things,' one of the Duffers' main goals was to create a memorable monster of out real, practical effects,

and they definitely acheived it.

But in season two, I'm seeing a lot more CGI.

Here's the thing, though:

You know how slasher movies get really old by like, the fifth sequel or so?

That's because the stakes never really change,

It's always the same monster killing the same clueless teens.

Most slashers just aren't scary after you've seen them so many times.

You the monster's gonna come alive, and you know the teens are gonna die. There's nothing at stake outside of their own lives.

That's why adding more action is such a brilliant move.

You can't just have Will and the gang get menaced by another Demogorgon,

Or even another monster like it.

Instead, the Duffers successfully pivoted away from low-key horror to apocalyptic action.

And since the bigger scale required a vastly bigger threat, that requires a lot more

Worldbuilding

In 'Alien,' we know almost nothing about the Xenomorph.

It came from an egg in an ancient spacecraft, hatched into a wriggly worm of death and grew into a drooling killer.

For 'Aliens,' Cameron expanded on Scott and Giger's original concept by introducing a single, monstrous Queen that controlled her army of mindless drones.

Meanwhile, in 'Stranger Things,' the Demogorgon was a total mystery.

They literally knew nothing about it, they had to use 'Dungeons & Dragons' terminology to equate what it does.

The Demogorgon is tired of your silly human bickering!

The season finished without any real answers on what it was, where it came from, or what it wanted.

That would have worked just fine as the end of a standalone series,

But the sequel needed to expand on the mythology to keep us coming back.

I still feel it...

So, we find out about the Mind Flayer, the giant, tentacled organism that controls all life in the Upside Down,

Not unlike the hive-mind dominated by the xenomorph Queen.

The shadow monster's inside of him. If the vines feel pain, so does Will. Hive mind.

Hive mind. A collective consciousness. It's a superorganism.

It's the thing that controls everything.

Not only that, we learned its purpose: to spread and conquer all of us inferior beings in the real world.

At least according to the kids and their Monster Manual.

The Mind Flayer. What?

Oh my God, none of this is real, it's a kid's game.

No, it's a manual.

It's not just the scope of the story that increased, it's the consequences for failure.

'Alien' and season 1 were about isolated humans fighting for survival.

Our heroes may lose their lives, but the world would keep on turning.

Both sequels transform the singular struggle into a battle for the species itself.

In 'Stranger Things 2,' the fate of our entire dimension is at stake, not just Will and the gang.

It's like how in 'Aliens,' the humans and Xenomorphs are battling for control of the space colony,

while another faction wants to unleash them as bioweapons.

Speaking of which, we learned more about the evil corporation in 'Aliens,' too.

In the first movie, it's only referred to in passing as the "Company,"

But the sequel lets us in on how powerful Weyland-Yutani really is,

and how they'll stop at nothing to cash in on the xenomorphs.

Those two specimens are worth millions to the bioweapons division.

Now if you're smart, we can both come out of this as heroes and be set up for life.

Just like how 'Stranger Things 2' shed more light on the government scientists who are trying to understand, and exploit, the Upside Down,

But imagine for a moment a foreign state, let's say the Soviets, if they heard about our mistake...

Do you think they'd even consider that a mistake? Or would they try to replicate that?

Can't let the Russkies have it can we?

I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration to sap and impurify our precious bodily fluids!

The expanded scope opens up tons of awesome new story possibilities.

Number Eight [BELCH], Number Eight [BELCH], Number Eight [BELCH]

As a series grows from a standalone surprise hit to a genuine franchise,

It needs to flesh out its backstory and expand upon the world it created.

And with at least two more seasons of 'Stranger Things' planned,

the Duffers have successfully used 'Aliens' as a blueprint to build a much larger stage for their story to play out on.

Sticking so close to Cameron's masterpiece also set up opportunities for

Subversion.

There are plenty of smaller nods to 'Aliens' that don't necessarily tie into the big picture,

Like the way Hopper gets sucked into the tunnel floor like a colonist cocooned to the wall,

Eleven takes an elevator down for a final showdown with the big boss,

Or how a team of gung-ho sci-fi soldiers get eaten alive as their superiors watch on screens.

Get out of here! Ahh!

They might not tie into the greater narrative themes,

But they're such cool iconic moments in action cinema, why not throw 'em in?

What the hell?

It solidifies the connection, and it sets us up for some great subversions when things stray from the 'Aliens' formula.

Case in point? Dr. Owens.

It's clear that the Duffers cast Paul Reiser based on his iconic role as the sleazy corporate scumbag Burke in 'Aliens.'

It was a bad call, Ripley. It was a badd call.

Bad call? These people are DEAD, Burke!

I mean, in their original script, the character was literally named 'Paul Reiser.'

Those were your words!

So during my entire binge, I just kept waiting for him to turn heel, betray our heroes, and die in a suitably ironic manner,

just like Burke.

So imagine my surprise when he actually turns out to be a decent guy!

And if it kills the boy?

Then quite frankly, Sam, it kills him.

Say that to me again.

Sure, he's still working for the evil lab exploiting the Upside Down,

But he stands up for Will and tries his best to save him,

He even survives the night, and gives Eleven a birth certificate,

Which is like the nicest thing ever!

Hopper gets to be her dad now. I want Hopper to be my dad!

The Duffers built up our expectations with their 'Aliens' homage and self-aware casting of Paul Reiser,

Which made it such a pleasant surprise when they kept Dr. Owens on the side of the good guys.

That's just what the Duffers do, though.

They get you in the door with some clever references and '80s nostalgia,

Create a satisfying story on the foundations built by those who came before,

And throw in that extra little twist that makes 'Stranger Things' so special.
